Publishing about niche topics used to be too expensive. But then the Web happened, and the costs for publishing and distribution dropped to almost nothing. That change opened the door to an entirely new generation of publications targeting small, focused audiences.Peter Rojas took advantage of this shift by launching Gizmodo, the Internet's first popular gadget blog. And, it turns out, gadget lovers weren't as small of an audience as he thought. In fact, there was so much demand for gadget-related content that, a couple years later, Peter left Gizmodo to launch Engadget, which became an even bigger gadget blog.He may have ruffled some feathers along the way, but, it's hard to argue with his results: Peter forever changed the journalism landscape. On this episode of Web Masters, you'll find out how he did it.For a complete transcript of the episode, click here.

Peter Rojas is a founding partner at Betaworks Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital fund based in New York and San Francisco. He is also the co-founder of several startups, including Weblogs Inc. (acquired by AOL in 2005), where he created and was editor-in-chief of both Engadget and Joystiq; Gizmodo (formerly Gawker Media, now part of Univision); music discovery service RCRD LBL; and gdgt, a social commerce platform (acquired by AOL in 2013). Prior to Betaworks Ventures, he worked at AOL as VP of Strategy and later as Co-director of Alpha, the company's experimental products group. Peter’s favorite quote: “I divide my officers into four classes; the clever, the lazy, the industrious, and the stupid. Each officer possesses at least two of these qualities. Those who are clever and industrious are fitted for the highest staff appointments. Use can be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy however is for the very highest command; he has the temperament and nerves to deal with all situations. But whoever is stupid and industrious is a menace and must be removed immediately!” ―Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord Peter’s book recommendation: Simulacra and Simulation by Jean Baudrillard

Hi everyone, welcome to what is likely the final episode of 0G, A History of Forgotten Phones! We are wrapping up our limited-run podcast with a special bonus episode on tablets. Yes, there were plenty of weird and wonderful tablets from produced in the years before (and even after) the iPad! For this episode we take a look back at Intel's Web Tablet, Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Windows Smart Display, the Nokia 770, the Pepper Pad 3, the ill-fated Crunchpad/Joojoo, the original Samsung Galaxy Tab, the HP Touchpad, the BlackBerry PlayBook, and the Motorola Xoom. 0G is hosted by two people who were there: Christie Pitts (now at Backstage Capital), who started her career selling phones at a Verizon store, and Peter Rojas (now at Betaworks Ventures), founder of Gizmodo, Engadget, and gdgt. Want to contact us? Christie is @imchristiepitts and Peter is @peterrojas on Twitter. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the show.
Peter Rojas was the co-founder of a few very popular technology blogs, including Gizmodo, Engadget, and Joystiq. The latter two were part of Weblogs, Inc., which was acquired by AOL in 2005. He later co-founded the consumer electronics social networking site, gdgt, which AOL also acquired in 2013. Post-acquisition, Peter stayed for a couple of years as the VP of Strategy and director of AOL's experimental products group. Now Peter is a partner at Betaworks, a startup studio and seed stage venture capital company based in New York City and San Francisco that invests in network-focused, consumer-facing media businesses. This is the second part of my conversation with Peter. In it we talk about Peter’s perspective on early stage investing, and he shares an unexpectedly tragic way he’s seen startups die.We discuss his take on the AR and VR markets, and Peter considers which of the major platform players has a chance to dominate the next cycle. We also get into Synthetic Reality, as well as the unique attributes of Betaworks Camps - as an alternative to accelerators or incubators. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.

:'-) Ever wonder why emoticons exist? They popped up in the 1980s to make online connections feel a little less digital and a little more personal :D. In this episode of IRL, host Veronica Belmont and special guest Peter Rojas explore how the Internet is both building and also confusing our relationships every day. Chloe Stuart-Ulin gives a first-hand account of her life as a “closer” for an online-dating service; we hear a dramatic, real-life story about a woman who finds her biological parent online; and Emma Brockes talks about how we can all maintain humanity while interacting with others on the internet. IRL is an original podcast from Mozilla. For more on the series go to irlpodcast.org. Read more about Chloe Rose's experience as a "closer" for hire on online dating apps here. Emma Brockes writes a column for the Guardian called How to be Human Online. She's just written a book too called, An Excellent Choice: Panic and Joy on My Solo Path to Motherhood. To read Ingrid Burrington's essay mentioned in the podcast about CorrLinks, the email service providing connection for inmates at U.S. prisons, go here. Check out this article about how the internet has changed dating forever. Online dating coach Laurie Davis Edward shares her thoughts on the good, bad and ugly that comes with finding love on the web. And, for more about human connection, and what our innate desire for it means for us as we — more and more — love, do business, and find our tribes online, read this piece by cultural anthropologist Genevieve Bell. Finally, for some bonus audio on how technology interfered with a marriage proposal — and commentary on new relationship norms — head over to Mozilla's blog. On today's episode, Paco and George discuss the early days of LA's punk rock scene with tech podcaster/writer/founder Peter Rojas. We discuss the influence of college radio to the cult of personality around Darby Crash and pre YouTube digging for clues to the origins of punk. The Decline Movies were a Rosetta stone for many a suburban teen looking for alternatives of expression. Often referred to as a Rock ‘n Roll anthropologist, Penelope Spheeris worked as a waitress at Denny’s and IHOP to put herself through film school. A holder of a UCLA Master of Fine Arts degree in Theater Arts, she worked as a film editor and a cinematographer before forming her own company in 1974. She produced, directed, and edited videos for major bands through the Seventies and Eighties, concluding her music video work with the Grammy nominated, Bohemian Rhapsody video for WAYNE’S WORLD. Spheeris’ feature film debut was the 1979 documentary on the Los Angeles punk scene, THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION which received stunning and unanimous critical praise. The LAPD shut down Hollywood Boulevard and Chief of Police, Daryl Gates wrote a letter demanding the film not be shown again in L.A. Still fascinated with the subject of punk rock, she wrote and directed SURBURBIA, her first narrative film in 1983. It is a disturbing and somewhat prophetic story of rebellious, homeless kids squatting in abandoned houses, trying to make new families, and protecting one another. SUBURBIA won first place at the Chicago Film Festival. Almost 25 years later her documentary, THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION, PART III would eerily mirror the events she scripted in SUBURBIA. All three DECLINE movies plus a disc of extra footage were released as a DVD box set by Shout Factory! in 2015. https://www.shoutfactory.com/film/documentary/the-decline-of-western-civilization-collectionPeter Rojas created a few different sites, including Gizmodo (now part of Gawker Media), Engadget (now part of AOL), Joystiq (now part of AOL), RCRD LBL (joint venture with Downtown Music), and gdgt (now part of AOL). After all that he was VP of Strategy at AOL & Co-Director of AOL Alpha, the company's experimental product group. He also hosts the MVP podcast with Ryan Block.**Sup Doc has created a Patreon page for those that can help out. We will also be providing unique Sup Doc content for our contributors.
