Steve Troughton-Smith en Mastodon: https://mas.to/@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social I was a die-hard Apple iPad fan for over a decade. Compiler Error This week's Compiler Error has a theme: Apple Antitrust Cases! 1 - In its first antitrust case, Apple Computer was sued in 1997 by publishing houses for not licensing its MacOS system software to run on other compatible hardware at the time. 2 - Apple was sued in 2005 for allegedly operating a music-downloading monopoly through iTunes and the iPod music player, preventing RealNetworks music from playing on iPods. 3 - Just a few months after the original iPhone was released, Apple was sued in a case that lasted until 2019 partly over the fact that the just-released device could not run third-party apps. 4 - After only a year and a half of litigation, Apple was found guilty in a case where there was compelling evidence that they played a central role to eliminate retail competition.

On this episode of Work Beyond Mac, host Jason Cipriani talks with Jake Krol, Tech and Electronics Editor for CNN Underscored. Jake and Jason had the chance to test and review the 2021 iPad Pro early, and so the first half of this episode is spent going over their thoughts about Apple's latest tablet. The second half focuses on iPadOS 15, and talking to Jake about which areas of the iPad and iPadOS are holding him back from going full-time on iPad. It's a fun and insightful conversation, and I hope you all enjoy the change of pace. Kyle and Gilbert talk iPads. A lot.Show NotesNarrated Podcast on Twitter (it's a fantastic show about audiobooks, definitely check it out).Gemini Photos Note: At first Gilbert erroneously referred to Gemini Photos as "Gemini 2." Looking at the icon it's clear they've just used the symbol for the constellation Gemini (which at first glance looks a lot like the Roman numeral II), and that Gilbert was woefully misled despite literally having the symbol tattooed somewhere on his body (he can't remember exactly where). And there's actual Gemini 2, which Gilbert also uses on his Mac for duplicate files (not photos). Confusingly, this also happens to be version two and the name is, in fact, Gemini 2. They probably did this because something something Mac App Store something something upgrades. And yes, it also has the symbol for Gemini. It's the egg shape that sets it apart, obviously. Note: this app isn't quite recommended yet. The original iPod touch launched just a few months after the original iPhone, way back in September of 2007. And for a few years, while the iPod touch never quite matched the feature set of the iPhone, it at least received updates of its own, up to and including the 4th generation in 2010 which, finally, you know, got a camera not just on the front but on the back as well. Recorded 7th April 2019 This week was a bit slim on Apple news, or at least until the last minute... Then all of a sudden there were quite a few stories including MagSafe, an ML/AI hire, iTunes rumours and Apple ads on YouTube. Anyway to discuss all of these and whatever else we turn up along the way I am joined by Nick “Spligosh” Riley and original EAP host Mark Chappell. Also I have to give a big shout out to all the slackers who put in stories - I don't always thank them but every week members post possiible stories into the slack, and without them I would never find some of the great things they turn up. Thanks to all of them. GIVEAWAYS & OFFERS Listeners of this show can claim $10 off purchases of Luminar and/or Aurora HD 2019 use the coupon code EssentialApple at checkout for your extra discount! On the show this week @erfon / @lewiswallace / @lkahney Apple reveals WWDC 2019 set for June 3 – 7 This morning, Apple revealed that it will host WWDC 2019 in San Jose, California, from June 3 to 7. Registered developers can apply for tickets now through March 20 at 5 p.m. Pacific on the WWDC website. Tickets cost $1,599 per person and are issued through a random selection process. iOS 13, macOS 10.15, watchOS 6 and tvOS 13 are all expected to be previewed during the WWDC 2019 keynote It’s show time! Apple confirms March 25 event at Steve Jobs Theater Apple will hold its next special event on Monday, March 25, in the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino. What to expect from Apple’s ‘show time’ event on March 25 The first Apple event of 2019 is nearly here. Tim Cook and friends are set to take the stage at the Steve Jobs Theater on March 25 to unveil the company’s newest goodies, only instead of unveiling some shiny new gadgets you can buy, Apple is supposedly going to bust out some services you can subscribe to. Apple’s “It’s show time” event is expected to be the first one ever where services and software play the starring roles. TV streaming service Instead of trying to be just like Netflix, Apple’s new TV service is expected to pull in content from other sources like Hulu, Showtime and HBO. As for Apple’s own TV shows, don’t expect them to be available at launch. The company allegedly will show a few previews at the event, giving us our first glimpse of the TV series it’s been working on. Some of the shows likely will come out later in the year, but Apple has so many projects in the works that most won’t come out until later. Apple News service Details about what, exactly, the new news service will look like remai murky. Rumors indicate it will cost about $9.99 per month, giving readers access to unlimited articles from sites that usually put their content behind a paywall. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and other publishers have all been approached to join the service. Some of those companies reportedly chafed at Apple’s proposed 50/50 revenue split Magazine Service Apple bought texture last year, a service that let users browse hundreds of magazine in digital format for $10 a month. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has uncovered evidence of the new magazine service built in to the Apple News app. So we know that’s coming too. Apple rushes to add HBO and Showtime to streaming service According to Bloombooger, Apple is hammering out the final details of agreements to add movies and TV shows from HBO, Showtime, Starz and others The negotiations allegedly would result in these shows appearing side-by-side with Apple’s own content, with the Showtime etc. getting a share of watchers’ subscription fees. Apparently 3rd party content is badly needed for the streaming app as Apple’s content is still in development and won’t be ready till the end of the year. Apple News magazine service details revealed by latest macOS beta After digging into the latest macOS 10.14.4 beta, developer Steve Troughton-Smith found some new references that confirm the magazine subscription service is on the way. Even better, Apple’s code provides some new details about it that we didn’t know. Leander’s gotta talk about The Tim Cook Boo Pre-Order Leander's new book! https://amzn.to/2XXTWLO
