Michael Hoffman, or “Hoff” as most know him, is the co-founder and CEO at IQXR, a company solving the hardest problems facing global-scale, enterprise XR deployments, and doing so with an open source approach.Previously Michael spent nearly a decade working with the Microsoft Hololens team. He was a Principal Engineering Lead at Microsoft for a couple of years, left to be the founding partner of Object theTheory, where he and his team worked with enterprises to leverage AR and VR technologies, often in combination with IoT and AI/Machine Learning. And then he went back to Microsoft for a couple of years to lead the development of the Mixed Reality Toolkit (MRTK) project.Earlier in his career, Michael worked in software engineering roles at Google, Nike, and several startups.In this conversation, Hoff describes how 3D visualization, with AR and VR technologies, changes our comprehension of digital information, contributes to the value of having your hands free to interact with the world, and enables better efficiency and better insights.Within the enterprise setting, Hoff notes it's relatively easy to get to a pilot and prove value, but it's really difficult to deliver that value at scale.We go on to talk about making AR/VR solutions viable within an enterprise setting at scale, including challenges around visual and audio haptics, working both online and offline, and other key bits of plumbing, as well as the misconceptions that many enterprises have about the technology.We also discuss:- the rationale and corporate strategy for building open source solutions, - the role of AI in accelerating software and content development,- the art of the AI prompt, and- how Apple Vision Pro accelerates the market.Hoff wraps up by discussing neurodivergence and his own growing awareness and acceptance of the challenges and benefits of neurodivergence for both his children and himself.You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com. Apple kondigde vorig jaar aan dat het zich gaat mengen in de wereld van AR/VR met de Apple Vision Pro. Inmiddels is bekend dat die begin februari in de VS lanceert. Nu meer bedrijven 'spatial computing' omarmen, vragen wij ons af: gaat het nu ook echt doorbreken?Er zijn al veel initiatieven van virtual reality en augmented reality geweest. Nog niet zolang geleden blies Mark Zuckerberg hoog van de toren rondom de Metaverse. Zakelijk is het grootste succes waarschijnlijk nog altijd de Microsoft HoloLens, maar dat gaat mogelijk veranderen. Apple kondigde de komst van 'spatial computing aan' met de Apple Vision Pro-headset. Weet Apple opnieuw het trucje te herhalen door veelal bestaande technologie te combineren tot een succesvol product, waar andere partijdn de mist in gingen?Qualcomm heeft spatial computing ook omarmd en presenteerde nieuwe chips voor headsets die zich op VR richten. Google en Samsung lijken hier gehoor aan te gaan geven, terwijl Microsoft al enige tijd wordt gelinkt aan Samsung voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe spatial computing-initiatieven. Als zoveel grote techbedrijven bezig zijn met bepaalde ontwikkelingen, is het een kwestie van tijd voordat de producten volgen. De vraag is echter: gaan consumenten en bedrijven er ook warm voor lopen en ze aanschaffen? De Apple Vision Pro kost een slordige 3500 dollar, dus het is niet voor iedereen weggelegd. 2024 lijkt wederom een bijzonder techjaar te gaan worden. Zo is er veel onzekerheid over de rol van de belangrijke platforms, zoals de appstores van Google en Apple of de grote streamers. Daarnaast brengt Apple zijn langverwachte Vision Pro uit. Wat gaat dat betekenen voor de toekomst van extended reality? En welke rol speelt Meta? Daarover praten Joe van Burik en Ben van der Burg in deze speciale eerste aflevering van het nieuwe jaar van BNR Digitaal. Gamemaker Epic boekte onlangs een overwinning tegen Google en haar Playstore. De conclusie: de appwinkel opereert als een illegale monopolie en daar is Epic als leverancier van content de dupe van. De zaak staat symbool voor het spanningsveld dat we in 2023 zagen, maar zeker ook in 2024 gaan zien. De grote platforms hebben veel macht, maar zijn tegelijk afhankelijk van content, in allerlei vormen, als aanbod. Hoe verdeel je de opbrengst? En waar ligt de echte macht? Dat vragen we aan Joost Rietveld, Universitair hoofddocent aan University College Londen, gespecialiseerd in marktwerking op platforms en Jasper Bakker, bedrijfs-ICT-journalist bij AG Connect Hoe gebruiken we XR in de toekomst? 2024 zou ook zomaar het jaar kunnen worden van de extended reality, de verzamelterm voor VR, AR en alles daaromheen. Dat komt natuurlijk door de Apple Vision Pro, de slimme bril van Apple die in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar in de VS uitkomt. Gaat de Vision Pro een revolutie aftrappen op het gebied van 'spatial computing'? Dat is nog even de vraag. Wel is duidelijk dat ook Meta, met hun aanmerkelijk goedkopere Quest 3 grote stappen maakt. Voorlopig richt de device zich vooral op gaming, maar toepassingen op de werkvloer (zoals we al een tijd bij de Microsoft HoloLens zien) zijn niet uitgesloten. Wie trekt er straks aan het langste eind? He notes that all three are being explored in surgical fields, especially orthopedics and neurosurgery. Within IR, augmented reality can be used to adjust images and subtract out respiratory motion, making biopsies and ablations safer and more effective. Dr. Hunt became interested in AR when his PIGI Lab at the University of Pennsylvania needed 3D models to access liver tumors in experimental mice. Additionally, AR is a useful tool for planning difficult procedures and teaching interventional procedures to trainees across the globe. Dr. Martin speaks about the intersection of medicine and industry. He directs research studies for Mediview, a company focused on bringing AR into medical imaging. Dr. Martin speaks about the important role that industry plays in commercializing an invention and getting it into operators' hands. As larger companies enter the AR space, accessibility and user interfaces will improve. Additionally, the shift towards AR product development can guide future FDA regulations. Dr. Gadodia's engineering background made him excited to enter the AR space as resident at the Cleveland Clinic. He highlights applications of AR in the non-academic setting. More than one year after Microsoft and the U.S. Army shifted their Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) program from prototype to production phase, the military will finally get the new augmented reality goggles for soldiers.The devices, which are based on Microsoft HoloLens and use the company's Azure cloud computing platform, will allow soldiers to see through smoke and around corners, use holographic imagery for training and have 3D terrain maps projected onto their field of vision. They also allow commanders to place important information into the field of vision of ground troops. Ultimately, the headsets could allow soldiers to train in more realistic environments.According to Bloomberg, an initial order for 5,000 of the special HoloLens headsets was placed last year but was paused for more testing after concerns were raised about the device's performance. But increased testing now has the Army confident in the program.The devices have gone through several design iterations that had to take into account things like a soldier's need to brace a weapon against their cheek. The original device also included dial controls that soldiers attached to their chests, but those controls easily broke off when soldiers dropped down to crawl on the ground.But now that most of the kinks have been worked out, the shipments are on the way. The deal could see the Army spend up to $21.9 billion. Besides the headsets, the military may also explore using the IVAS program to install similar mixed-reality displays inside of vehicles.

Zhanat talks about the app, the equipment used with the app, future versions of the app, the freedom users will have, and Microsoft HoloLens. Zhanat also talks about how developing the app came about, how improving technology has helped, battery life, memory, trying to live a normal life, future plans for the project, AI, and her internship with Microsoft in London. The augmentation of hearing and vision in humans, which can help both healthy people and people with cognitive impairments, is a possible direction for AR and AI research. By restoring the perception and memory functions of people with cognitive impairments, we can improve not only the lives of patients, but also those around them.

Bonjour à tous et bienvenue dans le ZD Tech, le podcast quotidien de la rédaction de ZDNet.fr. Je m'appelle Guillaume Serries et aujourd'hui je vous explique comment Cisco compte remplacer médecins et infirmières par... des hologrammes. Vous connaissez certainement Webex, l'outil de visioconférence de Cisco, très utilisé en entreprise. Tout comme Meet, Zoom oui encore Teams, l'utilisation de ces outils a tout bonnement explosé pendant les confinements de ces deux dernières années. Mais voici que le géant américain Cisco fait désormais le pari de Webex Hologram. Présenté en octobre dernier, Webex Hologram est un service qui apporte la réalité augmentée à sa plate-forme de collaboration. L'an passé, Facebook a lancé sa propre initiative de collaboration en réalité mixte. Le produit s'appelle Oculus Horizon Workrooms. Mais Facebook présente les participants sous forme d'avatars et non d'hologrammes photoréalistes. Pour Cisco, les premiers cas d'usages de cette technologie seraient à rechercher dans le domaine de la santé. L'idée ? rendre certaines expériences plus immersives. Cisco part du principe que nombre de téléconsultations entre médecins et patients pendant le confinement ont été réalisée avec des plateformes vidéo comme Webex. Et dans le même temps, les médecins communiquaient aussi entre eux virtuellement en utilisant ces outils. Dès lors, pourquoi ne pas se reposer sur des hologrammes et non plus sur des écrans pour mieux communiquer ? Car oui, les hologrammes de Cisco n'apparaissent pas sur les écrans de votre ordinateur ou de votre smartphone. Hors de question donc de gacher un tel exploit technique avec un écran 8 pouces. Car l'entreprise a mis sur pied des hologrammes qui réagissent en temps réel. Webex Hologram utilise donc des casques de réalité augmentée, comme le Magic Leap et le Microsoft HoloLens. Le premier cas d'usage décrit par Cisco est celui de la formation à distance. Concrètement, des étudiants en médecine peuvent regarder un modèle 3D d'une partie du corps humain tout en observant des simulations d'une procédure médicale. Hé mais attendez ! J'ai déjà vu ça ! C'était il y a quelques années lors de la démonstration qui accompagnait la première version du casque Hololens de Microsoft ! Là aussi, un cours de médecine était dispensé avec un hologramme 3D du corps humain ! Oui donc Cisco fait du neuf avec du déjà ancien. Mais il le fait mieux jure t-il. Cisco utilise une technique de rendu dite de champs lumineux. De quoi procurer une qualité holographique exceptionnelle sur les objets brillants et réfléchissants, comme les yeux par exemple. Pourquoi ? Parce que les champs lmumineux permettent de représenter un point donné du monde réel dans une scène sous différentes couleurs lorsqu'il est vu sous différents angles. La vidéo volumétrique, une technique concurrente, limite la représentation virtuelle à la même couleur. Pour réaliser cet exploit, sous le capot, Cisco Hologram abrite une technique de rendu hébergée et propulsée partiellement dans le cloud. L'hologramme est ainsi rendu pour partie dans le cloud, et les ajustements finaux sont eux calculés avec le processeur du casque de réalité augmentée. C'est cette technique qui permet d'optimiser la puissance de calcul en déchargeant les casques de la majeure partie du calcul. De quoi contourner les limites techniques des casques actuels, le tout avec une connexion sans fil 4G. Bien sûr, des algorithmes de compression Cisco - spécialiste historique des réseaux - sont aussi mis à contribution.

Unity Software is best known for its game engine, which was used for over 50% of all video games in 2020. But Unity is also used to create over 60% of all VR/AR applications, and is starting to expand into other industries such as automotive, architecture, manufacturing, film, and retail. It's not just about Pokemon Go! In this week's pod, we take a deep dive into Unity, and have a fantastic discussion with Karle Kane, the founder of Rainfall Games. Unity is one of the largest development platforms for gaming and was used to create over 50% of video games across 20 platforms in 2020. It is even more dominant in mobile gaming where 71% of the top 1,000 mobile games in 2020 used Unity. 93 of the top 100 game studios by revenue are Unity customers, and on average there were 2.7B people each month who consumed content created with Unity in 2020. Unity estimates their addressable market in gaming at $12B growing to $16B by 2025 Over 60% of all VR/AR experiences are created with Unity, and this platform was used to create 90% of all Microsoft HoloLens and Samsung Gear VR experiences. AR/VR is seeing increased adoption, not just in gaming but also in other industries including healthcare, manufacturing, architecture and design and the VR/AR market is projected to grow by 63% per year through 2025. Unity estimates their current opportunity in VR/AR at $17B They have three main business segments: Create Solutions, a subscription-based business providing access to Unity's development tools; Operate Solutions, a usage-based business helping game developers to run and monetise their games; and Strategic Partnerships, where tech partners such as Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony pay Unity to support their hardware and software. These three segments contributed 30%, 61% and 9% of revenue respectively in 2020, with Operate Solutions growing the fastest Unity acquired Applifier and launched their in-game advertising network in 2014, and this is now one of the world's largest mobile ad networks serving 23B ads per month. Unity does not break-out advertising revenue from their Operate Solutions segment, but the whole segment had revenues of $471M in 2020, an increase of 61% from the previous year. However, recent changes in iOS to prevent app tracking is estimated to reduce revenues by $30M in 2021, which represents 3% of total revenue Total revenue for 2020 was $772M, an increase of 43% from the previous year. Existing customers are buying more each year, with DBNERs of 138%, 133% and 124% for 2020, 2019 and 2018 respectively. The business is reinvesting in growth and has not shown a consistent profit as yet, having just become free cashflow positive in Q4 2020. They ended 2020 with $1.3B in cash with a further $480M in marketable securities and zero debt Unity currently has a market cap of $23B with a P/S ratio of 24. Happy Finish's CEO Daniel Cheetham's XR bread and butter was virtual experiences and LBEs, until the COVID-19 pandemic forced people to stay indoors. Now, he explains, he's exploring the power VR has to help enterprise and the environment. Alan: Hey, everyone, Alan Smithson here. Today, we're speaking with Daniel Cheetham, CEO of Happy Finish, a creative technology and content firm based in London, UK. They've done XR experiences for Ford, Exxon Mobil, and many more. We will learn today how they're using digital twins to add real business value. All that and more, coming up next on the XR for Business podcast. Daniel, welcome to the show, my friend. Daniel: Thanks for having me. Alan: It's my absolute pleasure. I've been looking forward to having you on the show for so long. It's really exciting, the stuff you guys have done. You've done everything from putting people from the real world into VR on a bicycle, to help give them a sense of what it's like to be on the other side of a driving scenario. You've done all sorts of things. Tell us, what is Happy Finish? Daniel: So, Happy Finish -- or HF, as we're now more commonly referring to ourselves -- we're really in the space of creating content and experiences for grand clients, right from the very beginning. And this is second hand information; I joined Happy Finish about six, six and a half years ago. Now the business is fifteen years old. We have been employing post-production and CGI techniques to create versions of the real world -- or different flavors of the real world -- over the last six to seven years. I think we built a reputation in the immersive technology space. We started working really early on with the DK-1 from Kickstarter, testing, playing around with Unity, seeing what we could do, up to now where we're easily 200+ commercially funded, brand funded XR experiences. And we work across the whole gamut of immersive tech, from 360 video -- which is less the flavor of the month now -- through to real time based experiences across Microsoft Hololens 2, and in AR. Alan: I've got a call one thing, that I saw here on your site, and I just got to ask: VR bungee jumping? Daniel: [laughs] One of my crazy ideas. It was in the context, we were chatting -- watercooler moment -- chatting about how we could make some noise about untethered VR, particularly around the Oculus Quest. And it just dawned on me as well, what better way to really test what can be done in untethered VR, than tether it to a bungee rope and have somebody jump off a bungee platform? Alan: So were you the first one to try this? Daniel: I wasn't, actually. We a couple of guinea pigs who put their hand up first, but I did try it in the end. It was not without its challenges. We were really putting the tracking system on the Quest to its absolute limits. And so on a few occasions, it was bungee jumping with a blindfold, rather than in VR. Alan: [laughs] Still pretty amazing that you even bit that off. So was it a brand activation, or was this just an internal--? Daniel: This is an in-house piece for us. And back until very recently, an area of focus for us was LB. So we've created a number of -- I think -- pretty recognizable motion platform based VR experiences. One that I know got a lot of sharing couple of years ago, that lives at the top of The Shard -- the tallest building here in London -- where the user will fly virtually -- or slide virtually -- around the top of The Shard. We got a lot of screamers and yeah, we had a real focus on building out that as a product. We have four or five of these VR slides around the world now. However, LB has taken somewhat of a hit --

And I wish this was show and tell, because what do you have sitting right on your desk right now? Jordan: So you just let the cat out the bag. We’ve got an XR10, sitting here right in front of me. And I promise it’s not the only one in the world. We’re starting to ramp these guys up and get them ready to go out onto a job site near you. Alan: What is the XR10? Jordan: So I imagine that most people that listen to your podcast are pretty familiar with the Hololens 2, that Microsoft has announced that they plan to start shipping later this year. So what we did is, is we hopped on board with Microsoft kind of from the start, maybe mid last year. And we wanted to find a way that we could take the Hololens 2, and adapt it for use out in kind of safety controlled environment. Our focus is on construction, but of course, there’s many mixed reality customers out there in oil and gas, and manufacturing, and other kinds of heavy industries that require PPE — Personal Protective Equipment — when they’re out on the site. So whether that’s safety glass, or hardhat protection, or chin straps, or earmuffs, we wanted to make an integration that took the Hololens 2 and all of its capabilities, and made it able to work with folks out in those industries. So we essentially OEMed the Hololens 2 components from Microsoft and we bolted it into a new form factor that slides down on top of kind of an industry-standard hardhat, and still enables you to use your over your hearing protection, chin straps, all that other type of gear that people need to keep them safe out on the site. Alan: We have HL2 + PPE = XR10. Jordan: Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It’s not our first go at this. We actually made a hardhat attachment for the first Hololens. You know, we weren’t there on the ground level from release — like we are at this time — but Hololens 1 came out, and a bunch of people ran with it and said “OK, what can actually use this for?” And as you know, most of the use cases that emerged were very enterprise-focused. And in many of those heavy industries that I mentioned, we were creating software from day one, first for architects with our SketchUp viewer app, but then moving out onto onsite construction with our Trimble Connect app. And we realized very quickly that we just weren’t going to sell any software, because no one could take a Hololens 1 and fit it under a hardhat out on the site. So at that time, we worked with Microsoft, and we basically built clips that would retrofit an off-the-shelf Hololens 1 up into a hardhat. And it sold like hotcakes, people were all over it. Used to be the best way to plan a three-dimensional construction project was on a two-dimensional blueprint, or perhaps a wooden model. We live in an era where entire digital twins — models made of light — can be used, but not everyone is. Bentley Systems’ Greg Demchak drops by to explain why that needs to change. Alan: Thank you for joining the XR for Business Podcast with your host Alan Smithson. Today’s guest is Greg Demchak from Bentley Systems. Greg has been designing and driving the development of immersive digital simulation for architecture, engineering, and construction markets for the last 20 years. Educated as an architect, he transitioned to software design after completing a degree in design computation at MIT. He went on to become a senior user experience designer for the Autodesk Revit product, product manager for SYNCHRO 4D software platform — now owned by Bentley Systems — and currently leads the mixed reality team for Bentley Systems. He’s been pushing the envelope of this technology and software for the Microsoft Hololens, and recently built an app for the global launch event of the next generation Hololens 2. To learn more about the work that Greg and his team at Bentley are doing, visit bentley.com. Greg, welcome to the show. Greg: Thanks, Alan. How’s it going? Alan: It’s going fantastic. I wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to join us here. And let’s kind of unpack the work that you do at Bentley Systems. From a 10,000 foot view, what do you guys do? Greg: Yeah. So Bentley Systems — just to frame that — is a global software company focused on engineering and infrastructure, architecture, and construction software. So it’s– we basically produce software for the built environment. So anything from bridge design, to high-rise construction, to infrastructure that needs to be modeled. And it’s a platform that serves that industry across the board. Alan: Well, that’s a big industry, considering there’s the equivalent of Manhattan, the size of Manhattan being built every single month somewhere in the world. So you work with large infrastructure projects, building skyscrapers, bridges, infrastructure. How does XR fit into that? Greg: It’s a good question. So the way we see XR fitting into this is– and you’ll see this term, it’s really becoming — I think — quite popular now in the industry, is this idea of the digital twin. And what started out as 2D drafting and then sort of evolved into 3D models, and then this idea of building information modeling is evolving into this idea of the digital twin, which is that any given building or asset or a piece of infrastructure can have a parallel digital representation of itself as a 3D model, and then also now as a 4D model, which is to say that the model evolves and changes through time, just like the physical building. And the XR piece is a really cool way to basically bridge that digital and physical space in a kind of a natural way. So that’s where we are developing on top of the Hololens platform. It’s basically a way to take those digital assets, and then render those assets as digital artifacts or 3D models or information in the context of the physical space. So that’s had the opportunity. These buildings, these infrastructure assets are evolving and changing over time. And you can basically render digital parts of that through the Hololens and see a mixed reality view of the world. Alan: So, for example, you’ve got a– let’s just use a building, a skyscraper, you’re building a building, you’ve got the Revit models or the BIM models or the CAD models. So let’

CEO Yan Simard drops in to remind enterprises shy to get started enhancing the workplace with XR technologies will — should they wait too long — be left in the dust. Alan: Welcome to the XR for Business Podcast with your host, Alan Smithson. Today’s guest is Yan Simard, the CEO of Kognitiv Spark. He’s designed and led many innovative business ventures through his own startups. He also has extensive professional experience with companies such as CGI, Zaptap, Vision Coaching, AIS, Incite Wellness, Bell Canada, Industrial Alliance, and more. I’m just going to read this quick quote from Yan. “We believe that mixed and augmented reality, if used right, can not only allow frontline and field workers to stay relevant, but make them more crucial than ever before.” With that, I’d like to welcome Yan and it’s kognitivspark.com. Yan, welcome to the show, my friend. Yan: Thanks, Alan. It’s a pleasure to be here. Alan: It’s my absolute pleasure to have you. And I can’t wait to dive in here. Maybe just give us a 10,000-foot view of Kognitiv Spark and the great work you guys are doing there. Yan: So Kognitiv Spark, we do mixed reality communication technology to better provide support to our remote field workers. Our product is called RemoteSpark. It’s an application that has been optimized for the Microsoft Hololens platform. In a nutshell, what it does if you have a field worker that is facing a piece of equipment that stopped working and that worker doesn’t know what to do, that worker can put on the Hololens, start RemoteSpark, and communicate with — let’s say — an engineer at the head office that can help out. The engineer, through a computer, is able to see in real-time what the worker is seeing. They can talk to the person, but they can also provide 3D holographic guidance on top of things. So as an example, if they have a 3D CAD file, that could help the worker figure out what are the steps that need to be done to perform a repair, the expert can drag and drop that on the computer side of things, and the CAD file is going to show up as a 3D hologram in the field of view of the worker, so that the worker can perform the repair. Alan: So if a field worker’s either in a factory or a warehouse and they’re looking at a machine, the machine breaks, why don’t they just pick up the phone? Yan: Yeah. And while most of the time that’s what they do right now, the problem with phones — or even tablet-based chat systems, or phone-based ones — is that you have to hold something in your hand, so you can do the repair or do the process or the task that you have to do, at the same time as you’re getting the information and the knowledge. So it’s always a two-step process. With mixed reality, you can just do it all together at the same time. So they’re doing the work, they have their hands greasy and dirty, and they getting the knowledge at the same time. So it’s much more efficient. And also, there are many studies that show that in terms of knowledge retention, it’s about 80, 85 percent higher when you learn about a given task at the same time as you’re doing it with your hands. Alan: If you look at this from an ROI standpoint, what is the investment to get started with Kognitiv Spark? Obviously you need a Hololens. So that’s, call it $3,500. Charla Pereira is the lead designer for all authoring on Dynamics 365 Guides. Dynamics 365 Guides, or what Charla will refer to as "guides" is a mixed reality application for the Microsoft HoloLens, that allows an enhanced learning ecosystem by providing holographic instructions within the flow of work, when and where employees need it. So imagine putting together some complex machine on an assembly line, having the worker wearing a HoloLens device, and having a series of step by step instruction cards with image and video visually tethered to the areas where the work needs to be accomplished - ultimately leading to fewer errors and greater retention of learned skills, and we'll talk much more about that in the discussion.Charla has been in tech for just about 20 years, and she began her career as a graphic designer. Charla joined Microsoft 11 years ago, and she's shipped everything from Microsoft Office to Microsoft Fresh Paint (a project originating from in Microsoft Research, that simulates oil on a digital canvas). The human eye is a wonderful and complex thing, and it’s a technological feat just to even come close to its natural revolution. Alan may have trouble remembering how to say their company’s name, but he can attest to the clarity of the XR-1’s display. Varjo CEO Niko Eiden comes by to give us a look behind the curtain of its creation. Alan: Welcome to the XR for Business Podcast with your host, Alan Smithson. Today we have Niko Eiden, CEO of Varjo. He’s formerly held top product leadership positions at Microsoft and Nokia. At Nokia, Niko led a product program team in 2006-2007, and together with researchers from Nokia Research Center, his team developed the basis for the optical technology that later became the Microsoft Hololens. Alan: It’s my absolute pleasure. We got a chance to meet at AWE this year and I got to try the XR-1, which was — oh my God — what an incredible experience. You put on the headset, the pass-through cameras were as if I didn’t have a headset on at all, I could just see the whole world. And then all of a sudden a car appeared in front of me; in the space I was in, there was a car. Then I got in the car, and the space around me disappeared, and I was in the car. And the one thing that really stuck out with me that blew my mind was. I was looking — it was a Volvo — and I remember looking at the steering wheel. And the little Volvo symbol in chrome was so crystal clear. It looked like a real car. Let’s talk about your technology and how you guys ended up at this place. Niko: Sure. We really had the initial vision– the founding team, we had a long background in different augmented reality and VR devices. And we had always been talking about that video see-through type of devices could actually combine the best of both worlds of AR and VR devices. And every time you started talking about them, somebody kind of commented basically that don’t bother: the latency, the lag between what you’re seeing through the cameras, and what’s happening in reality is gonna be too long. Or the resolution is not going to be good enough, it’s not going to look great. But we were in the summer of 2016, we were looking at a demo and the demo was shown with the Hololens first gen device. And I got really thinking that this would be such a cool demo, but it’s really missing a big part of the experience, because it wasn’t able to show the image in a photorealistic fashion. It was a very high fidelity graphic scene that we were looking at with Hololens and we were just thinking that this would be so much better with a VR device. And combining the reality with a video see-through device could actually really work. We were a bit curious. We had some extra time at that point together with Urho [Konttori] — one of the other founders — and we built our first prototype in 24 hours, and the experience was really magical.
