Palm Sunday–Notes in the Wilderness: I'm still writing the story Scripture: Matthew 21:1-17
This week Samantha Thomas helps us to remember that no matter how dense or unpredictable life may feel, God is still writing your story. Life's trials and triumphs are all part of a greater narrative authored by a God who sees every detail and provides refuge in times of need. Take heart and find peace in knowing that His plan for you is purposeful, and His love is unwavering. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. - Matthew 2:11-12 (ESV)

Canada's Jewish community wants the 119 remaining Israeli hostages to know that they are not forgotten—even though the letters they're writing to them most likely will never arrive. For nearly three months now, in schools and synagogues and kitchen tables across Toronto, more than 1,000 volunteers have been penning letters to the hostages, filling care packages and mailing them—or, in some cases, delivering them in person—to the offices of the Canadian Red Cross. The letter-writing campaign, called “You Are Not Forgotten”, is supported by Toronto's UJA Federation, which provides a suggested script and the address of the Canadian Red Cross president, Conrad Sauvé, in Ottawa. It's also designed to keep the pressure on the Red Cross's international head office in Switzerland to finally visit the hostages and demand their immediate release. Other local groups like Canadians for Israel have undertaken the same letter-writing project. Camp Gesher saw campers write to now-freed hostage Ofri Brodutch, 10, who attended the Jewish camp in the summer of 2023. On today's The CJN Daily, we'll hear from some of the letter-writers, including Eynat Katz, Sophie Giterman and bat mitzvah girls Ainsley Davidson and Halyn Freeman—and also from the Canadian Red Cross, to explain why they can't deliver any of the notes. "Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Genesis 28:15 God, the author of your life's story, is continuously at work. He weaves together the fabric of your journey in ways that are beyond our human comprehension. So, don't be discouraged by temporary setbacks; they are just commas in the sentence of your life, waiting for God to reveal the grandeur of His plan. As stated in Numbers 23:19, God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. His plans for you are unchanging and full of purpose. Even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, God intervenes to bring about breakthroughs that go beyond what our logical minds can fathom. Just like Jonah, who found courage amidst the jaws of a great fish after God intervened in his life, there is hope for you as well. In the midst of fear and uncertainty, it was through divine intervention that Zacchaeus encountered Jesus personally. This encounter transformed his heart and led to a drastic change in his ways. God has the power to meet you exactly where you are and turn things around for your good. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Therefore, do not lose heart or be discouraged by the twists and turns along the way. Trust in God's unwavering faithfulness to write a beautiful ending to your story. May His grace and love inspire you to persevere through every obstacle and setback. Know that this journey will require patience and faith on your part. While it may be difficult to see how certain circumstances could lead to something good, remember that God works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). So hold onto hope tightly and lift your head high. Embrace each twist and turn with anticipation, knowing that God is at work behind the scenes. Surrender control into His hands and allow Him to guide your steps toward a future filled with purpose, joy, and endless possibilities. Believe in the power of God's redemptive love to transform every aspect of your life. May He turn things around for your good in Jesus' name. Amen. Matthew 5:18 says, "For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." Amen. Prayer for Today! Oh Jehovah, just as you changed Gideon's destiny and bestowed upon him the title of the best and mighty man of valor, I ask that you do the same for my life, my beloved family, my friends, and our ministry. We yearn for your divine touch to reshape our circumstances and elevate us to new heights. In Jesus' name. Amen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pastor-divineo/support
"Your word, O LORD, is everlasting; it is firmly fixed in the heavens." Psalm 119:89 God's incredible power to heal hearts and change destinies is not just a thing of the past; it is still actively present in our lives today. The Bible shares the inspiring story of Gideon, a timid and unassuming man whom God called to lead an army against insurmountable odds. In this account, we witness how God worked miraculous wonders that defied all logic, transforming Gideon's life in the process (Judges chapter 6 and 7). So, when you feel like your story is unworthy or incomplete, trust that God's edits will transform it into a masterpiece beyond your imagination. Just as God transformed Gideon's life, He stands ready to do the same for you. He wants to strip away any limitations or insignificance that may hinder your potential and replace them with His limitless possibilities. When challenges arise, and obstacles seem insurmountable, take heart in knowing that miracles are still within reach. God's healing power extends beyond physical ailments; it also encompasses emotional wounds and inner struggles. Whatever battles you may be facing, bring them before Him with earnest faith, for He desires to restore peace and wholeness to your wounded heart. Deuteronomy 28:12 says, "The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow." Do not underestimate what God can accomplish in your life. Remember that His miraculous interventions can turn everything around even when faced with impossible circumstances. By surrendering yourself fully to His will, you open the door for divine intervention that transcends human understanding. As you journey through life, never lose hope or give up on the power of miracles. Embrace your unique purpose and calling with confidence, knowing that God has equipped you with everything needed to fulfill it. Trust in His ability to work wonders that defy all earthly constraints, and watch as He transforms your life into a testimony of his overwhelming love and grace. Remember: God is still writing your story. With each twist and turn, He inspires breakthroughs that resonate beyond logic and impact lives in extraordinary ways. Embrace this truth wholeheartedly - miracles are at hand if only we believe and place our faith in the One who holds the power to heal hearts and change destinies forever. Because in the midst of uncertainty, remember that God is the author who holds the plot twists that will make your story uniquely beautiful. Amen. Isaiah 40:8 says, "The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever." Amen. Prayer for Today! Father, pour out your transforming power upon me. Strip away any limitations or insignificance that may hinder my potential. Replace it with an extraordinary calling that establishes me as one of great influence, strength, and honor. In Jesus' name. Amen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pastor-divineo/support

In 2013, novelist and memoirist Dani Shapiro published her craft/memoir Still Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life. This year, the book celebrates its 10th anniversary with a re-release and new foreword. Dani joined Marrie Stone in 2013 to talk about it (their interview can be found here), and joins her again to revisit it. They talk about that intervening decade and what's happened in Dani's life and career since the book's first publication. Dani discusses what aspects of Still Writing are truer today than before, how her thinking has evolved around issues such as dealing with distractions, self-sabotage, writerly authority, memoirs versus novels, and much more. (In the interview, she recommends an essay by Alexander Chee that can be found here.) Dani uses her own experiences across her many novels and memoirs to shed light on the writing process, its many hardships, and great gratifications. In this episode, we talk about Dani's memoir Inheritance. Dani's extraordinary story made me rethink how we view family and the rigid definition that we often associate wth the word. In truth, family is so much more then a biological connection, a passing of genes. It is love, security, acceptance a sense of belonging etc. and sometimes it is none of that which makes family so tricky. You can find Dani here. You can purchase Dani's book here.

DANI SHAPIROBestselling memoirist, novelist and host of the hit podcast Family Secrets shares her story about the staggering family secret uncovered by a genealogy test: an exploration of the urgent ethical questions surrounding fertility treatments and DNA testing, and a profound inquiry of paternity, identity, and love – now in paperback In the spring of 2016, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA for analysis, Dani Shapiro received the stunning news that her father was not her biological father. She woke up one morning and her entire history—the life she had lived—crumbled beneath her. This shocking revelation propelled Dani into a journalistic and personal quest that resulted in her latest memoir, INHERITANCE — the book she was literally born to write. Chronicling Dani’s journey to unlock the hidden story of her own identity, INHERITANCE, which became an instant New York Times bestseller in hardcover, is a gripping exploration of the secrets we keep from one another—out of shame, for self-protection, or in the name of love—and how to answer the fundamental question: What makes us who we are? Dani Shapiro discusses: · Her writing process for INHERITANCE and why she was driven to start writing in real time as the story was unfolding. · How her own sense of identity -- a central theme of INHERITANCE – has changed over the course of her DNA discovery to now, as well as how it has affected so many readers on their own journeys of secrets and identity. · Her advice to the millions of people who will take personal DNA tests (as many as 50 million are estimated to have received personal DNA test kits such as 23&Me and Ancestry for holiday gifts this past season alone). She shares her thoughts on how these tests have affected our society in both good and worrisome ways. · Her hit podcast, Family Secrets, now in its third season, with over 7 million downloads. INHERITANCE is a book about secrets—secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman’s urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than fifty years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history. It is a book about the extraordinary moment we live in—a moment in which science and technology have outpaced not only medical ethics but also the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover. About the Author DANI SHAPIRO is the author of the memoirs Hourglass, Still Writing, Devotion, and Slow Motion and five novels including Black & White and Family History. Also an essayist and a journalist, Shapiro's short fiction, essays, and journalistic pieces have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, Tin House, One Story, Elle, Vogue, O, The Oprah Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, the op-ed pages of the New York Times, and many other publications. She has taught in the writing programs at Columbia, NYU, the New School, and Wesleyan University; she is cofounder of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Positano, Italy. Shapiro is the host of the hit podcast, Family Secrets. She lives with her family in Litchfield County, Connecticut.
Let's talk about the ways we write ourselves off before we ever have a good reason to do so.
Do you have the hope of the "It ain't over till it's over" attitude when you are watching your favorite pro sports team? Do you keep cheering that team on to the end of the game even though they may be getting beaten? Do you have that same attitude about your life? Do you believe that God is still working in you even though you may be going through a rough chapter in your life. Do you believe that the mistakes that you have made can be made into a story for God's glory? In this teaching, Pastor Greg shares how God is still writing our story, even though we may be in the midst of one of life's bad chapters.
[210] Dani Shapiro writes, “When I think of the wisest people I know, they share one defining trait: curiosity” (213, Still Writing). As she notes this connection between wisdom and curiosity, she continues, “They turn away from the minutiae of their lives—and focus on the world around them. They are motivated by a desire to explore the unfamiliar. They are drawn toward what they don't understand. They enjoy surprise” (213). I love how she connects surprise and curiosity. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi makes that same connection, as you'll see shortly. But before we get to that, let me establish my own connection: that curiosity is one of three pillars of your best writing life...along with creativity and productivity. Curious Writers Bring More to Their Work As curiosity becomes a daily practice, our writing will benefit, because curiosity serves as a driving force to producing captivating content and developing a writer who has things to say. Nourish curiosity and you'll have a lively imagination drawing from a vast and ever-expanding library of ideas. Each day, even the smallest flash of wonder fans the flame of creativity. If we agree with Dani Shapiro that curious people focus on the world around them with a desire to explore the unfamiliar—drawn toward what they don't understand—we gather clues for how we, too, can cultivate curiosity to live out our best writing life. If you've lost your sense of wonder and dampened curiosity, don't worry. You can recapture it, funneling into your work a newfound delight in the world around you, in yourself, and in others. If you happen to be by nature a curious lifelong learner, lucky you! Continue to explore new ways to cultivate it further to become even more curious and pour what you discover into your writing projects. Develop Curiosity Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in his book Creativity writes: “[T]he first step toward a more creative life is the cultivation of curiosity and interests, that is, the allocation of attention to things for their own sake…. Creative individuals are childlike in that their curiosity remains fresh even at ninety years of age; they delight in the strange and the unknown. And because there is no end to the unknown, their delight also is endless.” (346, Creativity) Did you hear his suggestions? Allocate “attention to things for their own sake.” “Delight in the strange and unknown.” It's similar to what Dani Shapiro was saying: even the old in age are young at heart as they “explore the unfamiliar” and let themselves be “drawn toward what they don't understand.” Curious people learn something new every day. Search, Capture, Ask My mom moved from the American Midwest to a coastal town in the South and became captivated by the flora and fauna of the area. She bought a telephoto lens so she could capture photos of the birds that seem so exotic to her. She grew up and lived most of her life with mourning doves, cardinals, robins, starlings, swallows, and red-winged blackbirds. Now she's delighting in what are, for her, “strange and unknown” species. She's “exploring the unfamiliar” as she snaps photos and looks up in a guidebook the names of birds that turn out to be wood storks, ibises, great blue herons, green herons, and anhingas. She shares them with her Facebook followers posting one photo after another along with thoughtful captions further modeling this curiosity that comes so naturally to her. My mom is by nature curious and developed it as a journalist, rooting out stories everywhere she goes. But you don't need to be a trained journalist to ask the questions popping into your head and to search for answers: borrow binoculars—or a telephoto lens—to study a bird ask a parent about her first crush wonder about the etymology of a word—and look it up dig into a time in history you know little about consider why a person made one choice instead of another ask that about yourself,

Oprah's agent, THE biggest literary agent in the world, is on today’s episode of the Beautiful Writers Podcast with one of her star clients! Jennifer Rudolph Walsh is the head of the Worldwide Literary Department at WME (William Morris Endeavor). Along with repping authors like Sheryl Sandberg, Arianna Huffington, and Brené Brown, she’s sold the books you’ve heard about here multiple times—HOURGLASS, DEVOTION, and STILL WRITING—by one of our favorite writers and guests, Dani Shapiro! Dani is back as today’s guest host with her rock star agent for an intimate look at the kind of relationship every writer dreams of. Jennifer and Dani’s “soulmate” connection started nearly two decades ago, which makes this episode so unique. It’s loving. Kind. Cozy. Fun. Not exactly the first words that come to mind when you think of high-powered lit agents. But Jennifer is far from jaded or standoffish, as you’ll see. “Everyone who has breath has a purpose,” Jennifer says, which is just the kind of feel-good encouragement you may need right now. In case you’ve forgotten to breathe or remember that you have a purpose. You’ll be reminded when you hear about where to access precious pockets of time for your dreams, and how caring passionately about your goals but giving zero f#cks about the nonsense and noise you can’t control makes all the difference. We hope you’ll be encouraged to hear about how agenting is a two-way street, and how we’re all doing our best to wrap our arms around the changing realities of social media and platform building when what we’re desperate for are both community and a revolution. Community. Revolution. Jennifer’s middle names. She’s currently building the ark before the flood, so to speak, with her creation of the TOGETHER LIVE tour, an annual speaking tour that's coming to ten cities this fall. Featuring heart-stopping stories from our Glennon Doyle Melton and Elizabeth Lesser, and so many other wonder women (Abby Wambach! Luvvie Ajayi! Sophia Bush!…), TOGETHER LIVE is affordable, accessible, raw, and ignited. It’s also curious, fierce, intersectional, and Zero Bulls#it. Or, as Glennon says, a ten-city, three-hour traveling Love Rally. Kind of like what we hope you’ll find in this conversation with these love-bug wonder women. Welcome.
Zora Bikangaga may possibly be our most interesting guest to date. This man has been on "This American life" because he pretended to be an Ugandan international student for an entire semester. After committing to the bit for so long he followed his new found love of acting and writing down to Los Angeles. I say down because he's from Northern California. Mr. B was a middle school teacher and a social issues theatre performer and talks about using some those real situations to create characters as well as write premises. Which just goes to prove that living a real life is just as important to comedy as being a comedian.Zora wrote, created and starred in HOA alongside the likes of Horatio Sanz and Cheri Oteri, he freelances for Cracked, he has worked on Drunk History, Adam Ruins Everything and he is a writer for the Upright Citizens Brigade maude team "New Deal".Listen to the this American life episode HERECheck out the trailer for HOA HEREGet tickets to see his maude team HERE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Legendary novelist Terry McMillan chats with Linda Sivertsen and guest host Dani Shapiro while on tour for her 8th novel, I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT YOU, currently getting rave reviews from the New York Times Book Review, The Los Angeles Times, and O magazine, to name a few. Terry's #1 New York Times bestsellers Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back were hit films (starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett). Once again she's created what readers expect from a McMillan book—characters full of wit and rich with friendship… oh, and great sex scenes, but we’ll get to that later. Like Dani (author of Still Writing, and also a bestselling novelist and memoirist, who was a guest of this podcast late last year), Terry’s taught for years as a professor, so they'll be talking craft and inspiration in this ridiculously fun interview filled with hilarity and adult language. Heads up! If you’ve got kids within earshot, you might want to push pause. Linda, Dani, and Terry will be ready when you are—slightly rebellious and always grateful—digging deep, and going for the light. Dani Shapiro's written two memoirs, Slow Motion and Devotion. Still Writing isn't like either of those two books, but it does draw upon a memoir-like exploration of Shapiro's personal history to elaborate her thoughts on taking up the practice of writing. Shapiro tells me what she's learned about writing over the years, what she's learned about herself through writing, and how "cultivating the mind that is watching the mind" through yoga has become one of her most effective creative writing tools--plus a whole lot more.
