INCIDENT IN A GHOSTLAND (2018) is a weird little movie that we believe didn't achieve what it originally intended to, but it still brought enough to the table for us to slash up and bleed out for you so join us this week as we talk dope doll-costumes, awesome isolated house set pieces, pastels, home invasions done right, BUT how ignorant writing can almost make a movie unwatchable... we're looking at you Pascal Laugier (look up "transphobia", sir.) Also, this movie has some insane behind-the-scenes drama involving a nasty accident with one of the main stars... we talk about that, too. Listen now! We love you all, and thanks for having us! If you're wondering how we have survived for 6 seasons, it's because of the Mycelium. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor Taylor Hickson (@taylor.hickson), who you may recognize as the one and only Raelle Collar, the unkillable Witchbomb of Motherland: Fort Salem. This episode was recorded early into Season 3, so it is relatively spoiler free if you have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing the explosive finale. We talk to Taylor about the casting process, her incredible chemistry with Amalia, what it was like to grow up alongside Raelle, and how her real life car accident changed things for our favorite witches in Season 3. Taylor explains that she was only around 20 years old when she began filming for Motherland and how because of that, there were countless parallels between her own growth and Raelle's. She shares how much she has learned from being part of such an important and influential queer ship (Raylla) and how it has influenced her in both her personal and professional life. We talk about what it was like to film that first sex scene with Amalia after only knowing her for a short time and how they have both continually managed to bring so much honesty and vulnerability into their on-screen relationship. Taylor shares how important the show has been not only to the fans, but to the cast and crew who formed a family during the uncertainty and isolation of the pandemic. We discuss the importance of having an “unkillable gay” in the face of the BYG trope and how vital the show has been by providing so many layers of representation for so many fans. And of course, we can't help but talk to Taylor about Bellcollar (listen to find out the ship name she and Ashley use for themselves) and Talder too, who she proudly claims to have been a big fan of from the start. We all go just as feral for Lyne Renée as Tally does in that delusion scene when Taylor gives a behind the scenes look into what it was like to be on set that day. We talk about Taylor's music and how she ended up singing and playing guitar on the show, and of course we shamelessly pitch her Motherland: The Musical. In this episode of 92NY Talks, join the cast and creator of Freeform's hit supernatural thriller Motherland: Fort Salem — Eliot Laurence, Taylor Hickson, Jessica Sutton, Ashley Nicole Williams, Amalia Holm, Demetria McKinney, and Lyne Renée — as they talk to The Advocate's Tracy Gilchrist about the third and final season of their hit series. Launching from an alternate American history — in which the witches of Salem ended their persecution by agreeing to fight for the US government — Motherland: Fort Salem is more than a fantasy show. It's a bold, speculative reimagining of American power, a queer love story, and an epic action series. The conversation was streamed live as part of the The 92nd Street Y, New York online talks series on June 19, 2022.
This week we're covering our second Pascal Laugier film, 2018's Incident in a Ghostland. C/W: misogyny, transphobia.Along for the ride is Blerdy Massacre co-host Xero Gravity, who joins us in getting increasingly aggravated with the Martyrs director the more we learn what he thinks he's doing with this film, which includes a lot of teen female abuse, a caricature trans woman villain and unabashed love for HP Lovecraft?!We're more forgiving of the twist, as well as the performances of Emilia Jones and Taylor Hickson (whose disfigurement on the film's set is another controversy Trace unpacks).Plus: TCM-meets-giallo production design, a sly police subversion, a groan-worthy typewriter and dolls everywhere.Reference: Robin Ono. “Horror and Transcendence: An Interview with Pascal Laugier” Rue MorgueQuestions? (Taylor is also softly spoken). Also there’s a ding from her phone and that’s just witch business so don’t question it. There’s also an audio glitch around 19:45. We’ve tried to edit as best as possible but given we mainly do remote interviews we work with the best that we have.
The multi-talented Demetria McKinney from FREEFORM much anticipated new series, “MOTHERLAND: Fort Salem,” who plays ‘Anacostia' – an articulate, tough and smart sergeant, whose sole focus is keeping the young recruits alive through their basic training. The show is set to debut in March 18th, 2020. Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country, Motherland: Fort Salem follow these young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world — but with supernatural tactics and weapons. The series not only stars Demetria, but talents like, Taylor Hickson, Ashley Nicole, Amalia Holm and many others. Demetria, a triple threat in the truest sense of the term, a vocal powerhouse, an award-winning actress, a skillful songwriter and a trend setter. Demetria has played many diverse roles on both the big and small screen. She is showing us why she is making her mark on your TV screens, in movie theaters and on stage. She is also concurrently recurring on BounceTV's, “Saints & Sinners” and “A House Divided” for UMC. You may also recognize McKinney from her role as ‘Janine Payne' on the hit TBS sitcom “Tyler Perry's House of Payne”, which produced over 250 episodes and received five NAACP Image Awards for Best Sitcom. The show now airs in syndication on BET Networks. From Albuquerque, New Mexico to a Military family, Demetria has lived all over the world and was given a drive that resembled that of her parents growing up. Her work ethic, way of life and how she sees life is that of her relationships with her family. Finding an interest in theater since she was little, Demetria decided to go to Okaloosa Walton Community College to study theater, where she took part in different theatrical plays outside and inside the college circuit. However, she didn't finish her degree because other opportunities came calling her name, one being Mr. Tyler Perry. Mr. Perry discovered her in a play that was touring called, “The Woman I am Today,” which she will say “kick started” her career. McKinney also worked with Tyler on his stage play, “Meet the Browns” and went on to star in several of his other plays including “What's Done in The Dark”, “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Madea's Family Christmas”. Her additional stage work includes leading roles in the plays “The Mountaintop”, “Church Girl”, the musical “I Dream” (in which she portrayed Mrs. Coretta Scott King) and “Dreamgirls”, where she performed alongside the legendary Jennifer Holliday. Demetria always makes time for her first love: music. In October 2017, she released her debut album Officially Yours, featuring the single Easy which was a top 5 hit on the Billboard and Urban AC radio charts. Demetria has opened on tour for R&B mainstays including Tyrese, BBD, Tank, and Fantasia. She received a 2017 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding New Artist. For Fun, Demetria loves spending time with her son, taking in a good movie, traveling and even painting art. She is very passionate about cancer research, due to her father, a cancer survivor. Kate Bryan returns this week to talk about Saturday's March for Our Lives rally, millennials' political party affiliations (or lack thereof) and movies. Acknowledging a Broken World Matthias talks about his pastor's thoughtful and apolitical comments on the March for Our Lives, and he and Kate discuss a more nuanced angle on the gun control rally: how it exposes our cultural problems and the brokenness of the world we live in. Millennials Going Rogue? The Pew Research Center recently released this startling statistic: The number of millennial women who identify as Democrat or lean Democrat has jumped from 56 percent to 70 percent in only four years. Jordan isn't a bit surprised at this trend, but she also doesn't think Democrats are guaranteed that vote forever since millennials don't have the same loyalty to party branding that their parents did. We discuss the Obama campaign's effect on millennials and their cynicism toward politicians. Nothing New in Hollywood We ask Kate, a fellow movie fan, to weigh in on the discussion of violence in movies and specifically, violence toward women. Do you need to portray violence to tell a story? At what point are we simply glorifying and celebrating violence in say, a Quentin Tarantino fashion? We talk about Uma Thurman's account of filming "Kill Bill" and (according to her) sustaining long-term injuries under Tarantino's direction as well as the tragic story of Taylor Hickson, a young actress who was pressured to bang on a glass window during filming and sustained a permanent facial scar after the glass broke. Terrible Opinions Jordan: Being sick as an adult is awesome. Matthias: Churches need to tell Christians to stop worshipping the idol of accomplishment. Kate: I now love having my phone in black and white.
