Sam Ballas grew up in a restaurant family, but he chose a career in finance upon graduation from college. However, 19 years later, he met Chef Sammy Gianopoulos, a Johnson & Wales University graduate with acclaimed culinary success at multiple concepts, and decided to return to the restaurant business.  Gianopoulos yearned to create a high-quality, counter-service restaurant that could easily be replicated. In this episode, Ballas and Gianopoulos explain how combining their culinary expertise and financial acumen laid the foundation of a successful partnership. In December 2023, they created Sammy's Sliders, featuring chef-inspired Angus beef, antibiotic-free chicken, fresh fish, and falafel sandwiches. Their initial 2,200 square-foot Winston-Salem, NC strip mall location was an instant success. "The ‘two-slider tray' with fries and drink for $13 helped establish us as a great value concept,” says Gianopoulos, adding, “Today's customer expects high quality, good portion, and reasonable prices. We knew we wouldn't be able to expand without providing all three.” In October 2024, they launched a second location in Kernersville, NC and began promoting the concept as a franchise. "Expanding through franchising works best for Sammy's Sliders,” says Ballas. “We offer established operating systems, experienced financial ability, a low cost of entry, and relative ease of operation.” The future looks bright for this partnership, says Ballas going on to say, “We are keeping our focus on the three basic combined steps of successful growth — serve high-quality product, maintain a hospitable service culture, and carefully select franchisees that fit our concept and vision.”

She joins Emma Barnett to discuss her new book about the hilarious gaffes that she has made in life, as part of her one-woman mission to celebrate what it means to be gloriously, messily human, rather than striving for Instagram-style-perfection. It's one of the things we're most embarrassed to talk about – pain when having sex. This is something that Professor Katy Vincent, academic gynaecologist, and Dr Lydia Coxon, researcher in Pain in Women, are hoping to change. They join Emma alongside BBC presenter Sophie Law to talk about an open panel they held to try and get women to talk about their pelvic pain, and address the taboo around talking about periods, sex and women's pelvic health. 'My Boyfriend Lives with with My Husband,' was the intriguing headline of an article in the Guardian newspaper recently. While Caroline and the children she shares with her husband Niel live in Cheltenham, Neil is living with Caroline's boyfriend in Scotland. Both Caroline and Niel describe their unconventional family living arrangements to Emma, they explain how it came about and why it works for them. The new BBC drama series The Reckoning has started on BBC One. The series, which stars Steve Coogan as Jimmy Savile, explores how he was able to hide in plain sight and use his celebrity status, powerful connections and fundraising activity to gain uncontrolled access to vulnerable young people. Sam Brown was abused by Savile from the age of 11. Her story is depicted in episode 3 of the series, and she speaks to Emma. Could we be about to reignite the vicious Lyon-era rivalry with the Cats? We will have a Clark of the Course to oversee it! Time to Restump Preview Podcast Saturday's Cat clash. Think of Matty Scarlett only getting the equivalent of a five minute holiday for king hitting Hayden Ballantyne in an unprovoked attack. Yes, Ballas got a couple for knocking Paul Chapman in the same game, but it was a misguided retaliatory self-defensive action, a case of mistaken identity. Think of Steve Johnson and his initial weird unwillingness to shake the hand of the great Ryan Crowley, who had just put him through 80 minutes of relentless “how'd you like that one” type treatment. Think of Fremantle getting shafted by the AFL and shunted down to Geelong to play that qualifying final in 2013, only to come out victors. And what about the provocative Mock-A-Docker double page spread in the Geelong Advertiser! (Did you know that if you go outside late at night when it is quiet, and you turn an ear to the east, you can hear Geelong folk still grinding their teeth over that loss to us!) And then think about today! Us securing Jordan Clark picking up Matty Johnson and  leaving the Cats with pennies on the dollar.Sure, they did well years back when they picked up Sam Menegola and got him going and lets not forget they royally stung us in 2016, when they got us to pay massive overs when we parted with pick 63 for Shane Kersten.Oh, the picturesque event littered trail a deep and meaningful, nasty at times, rivalry creates. That rivalry flame is sadly dim, only just flickering and it needs attention. Could Jordan Clark be the igniting spark that brings it roaring back to life? If you're looking for something to get you through part of Friday, something to cut the wait until our Purple troops destroy the hoops on Saturday, then join us for a sneaky peak preview, of the young band of purple misfits taking on the aging Gee-long in the tooth rock stars. As always your time is valuable so listen responsibly and know when to stop.

Strictly Come Dancing has arrived back onto our screens at last, and not a moment too soon. Here to add some cheer to the remainder of 2020 is the nation's favourite entertainment show - the glitz, the glamour, the fun and the drama! In this episode, Kevin talks to ballroom dancer, dance teacher, head judge on Strictly Come Dancing, and known throughout the world as The Queen Of Latin, Shirley Ballas! Shirley discusses her incredible career and journey, her remarkably candid new autobiography, the emotional responsibility of being a performer, and what life is really like a judge on the nation's favourite television show. KEY TAKEAWAYS Performers are not just masters of their craft in a technical sense, but also in an emotional sense. We learn to leave our emotional states at the side of the stage and step into a new way of feeling and thinking. Becoming the best in one's field is a test of our resilience, passion and determination. Obstacles and challenges are lessons and make us stronger. Debate still rages about what is more important in a dancer's toolbox. Technical prowess, or heart, passion and belief in what we do. A dance career is an ongoing apprenticeship, all the way from the beginning, until we reach the higher echelons of success. Not only do we learn about dance, but about life, and how the important lessons come through failure, not success. BEST MOMENTS ‘We can have the worst things going on in our lives, but when we have to go on stage, the “ON" button goes on‘ - 3:14 ‘It took many years of bumps and swimming upstream' - 8:55 'There's no such thing as the perfect dancer, but any true dancer must have a huge heart and be prepared to reveal it‘ - 11:55 ‘You win, you lose.
