In this post-print age, does the written word still hold power? During his decades-long career in publishing, Steve Wasserman has worn nearly every possible hat in the industry—editor, agent, reviewer, literary festival co-founder, publisher—serving as a midwife to the art and ideas of some of the most influential cultural juggernauts of recent decades, from Linda Ronstadt to the late Christopher Hitchens. This fall, this literary tastemaker joins us in his new role as an author to discuss the provocative people and events in his new memoir, Tell Me Something, Tell Me Anything, Even If It's a Lie. Hear Wasserman's hot takes, ranging from the frontlines of progressive politics to the higher gossip of the literati. The intellectual terrain within his orbit is as capacious as its geography—with deep-dives into the readerly culture of Los Angeles to the art of the Russian avant-garde and featuring cameos from a constellation of extraordinary cultural figures—Susan Sontag, Orson Welles, Barbra Streisand, and Gore Vidal among them. With his trademark wit, Wasserman reflects on the vitality of activism, journalism, and the world of books. As a man of letters presiding over the twilight of the Age of Print, he interrogates the hegemony of Amazon, the collapse of newspapers, and the consequences of both for our civic discourse. Learn about his life lived on the crest of major cultural turning points for both medium and message. See why, throughout all of the highlights and lowlights, Wasserman has maintained a stalwart conviction of the transformative potential of the written word. Fewer people in the world had access to the personal moments experienced by Steve Wasserman, Heyday Books publisher, former LA Times Book Review editor and former editor at several of the nation’s most prominent book publishing houses. In his latest book, “Tell Me Something, Tell Me Anything, Even If It's a Lie,” he details his close encounters with a handful of some of the most significant people in the 20th century, including Jackie Kennedy, Susan Sontag, Christopher Hitchens, Gore Vidal, Barbra Streisand, Huey Newton and others. Wasserman describes these accounts, or portraits, as focusing on people who “inspired me to do what I could, however modestly, to live a life of passionate engagement.” From the intimate details of a lunch with Jackie O to a deathbed conversation with writer and journalist Hitchens, Wasserman features a multitude of essays that cover a range of issues from politics to literature to culture and life. One memory of Wasserman included how he “never experienced Susan Sontag as a hostage to nostalgia.” Wasserman found inspiration in that and thought “it was a great, great lesson not to become pickled in your own prejudices such that you couldn't be open to the world.” Scheer attests that these portraits are brilliant, especially when dealing with controversial figures. He tells Wasserman, “These are famous intellectuals, but you humanize them, and you involve your own criticism.”

Steve Wasserman's journey from Berkeley radical to literary luminary is a testament to the enduring power of the written word. In our conversation, Wasserman reflects on a life shaped by books, ideas, and an insatiable curiosity that led him from tear gas-filled streets to the pinnacles of publishing. His friendships with intellectual giants like Christopher Hitchens and Susan Sontag honed his empathetic sensibility, while never dulling his capacity for outrage at injustice. Having navigated the literary landscapes of New York, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area, Wasserman offers a unique perspective on American culture and politics. His memoir, “Tell Me Something, Tell Me Anything, Even If It's a Lie,” serves as both a celebration of and a rallying cry for the life of the mind in our digital age.

Following on from her hugely successful collaboration with Lauren L'aimant – ‘Tell Me Something' which dropped in March earlier this year, the record has hit over 2M streams on Spotify alone so far, being added to over 100 Spotify playlists whilst maintaining a reach of over 9.6M people in total. An incredible start to the year for Maxinne and a long time in the making, as with the release of ‘Tell Me Something' this was the first taste of her emotive musical direction and sound which is evident throughout ‘Red Alert'. Going from strength to strength, her debut studio album ‘Red Alert', named after Maxinne's empowering and uplifting music, is not only an album name but a vision for the future with Maxinne's plans to build it into a brand, hosting club nights, radio shows and more. Inspired by her journey so far, from starting out to becoming an international performing artist, ‘Red Alert' is the culmination of Maxinne's career thus far. Collaborating with other artists, producers and singers who she has built great relationships with over the years, the album enlists some amazing vocalists such as Lauren L'aimant, Moya, Hayla, Cami Jones, Marck Jamz, Flipside and DJ Rae who make appearances throughout the album. There are also some high-profile collaborations from Gene Farris & Mark Knight who, bring their knowledge, experience, and maturity to the album. We had the pleasure of interviewing Gareth Donkin over Zoom video!Described as a “soul savant” in a Billboard feature out this week, London-based singer-songwriter and producer Gareth Donkin has released his debut album Welcome Home via drink sum wtr, a new label formed by A&R Nigil Mack in partnership with Secretly Group, as a part of the newly minted All Flowers Group. Across 10 shimmering tracks that mine classic influences ranging from R&B and yacht rock to funk, pop and more, Donkin has crafted an insightful coming-of-age self-portrait. In that Billboard feature, the 23-year-old recently spoke about the making of Welcome Home and his musical journey to date. Fans can listen to the new album digitally and on vinyl via Bandcamp. To date, Welcome Home has already garnered praise from Wonderland, FLOOD Magazine, Our Culture Magazine, The Luna Collective, Lucid Monday, KCRW and BBC Radio 6, along with support from Spotify's New Music Friday, Fresh Finds R&B and POLLEN playlists, plus more. Written and recorded in a series of bedroom studios in England and France, Donkin's self-produced debut LP showcases his stunning mix of instrumental virtuosity and emotional intuition, blending highly sophisticated melodic and harmonic craftsmanship with deeply moving lyrical explorations of longing, desire, and determination. The songs here draw on R&B/soul (“Whenever,” “Tell Me Something,” “Nothing We Can't Get Through”), funk (“Something Different”), yacht rock (“Falling For You”), hip-hop, jazz, and even bossa nova, hinting at times to everything from Michael Jackson and Bill Evans to George Benson and Jamiroquai. For more insight into Donkin's inspirational palette, fans can check out his hand-curated “lifted” Spotify playlist, which features eclectic musical references such as The Isley Brothers, Bill Withers, Genesis, Erykah Badu, Pharoah Sanders, TOTO, and more.Donkin's performances on Welcome Home find him layering up instrument after instrument in the best one-man-band tradition of Prince or Stevie Wonder. The end result is a moving work that's equal parts brain and brawn, a masterful debut from a young artist discovering himself — and his sound — one song at a time.Born with perfect pitch, Gareth Donkin was already fanatically obsessed with both jazz piano and drums before he turned 12. By the time he headed to the Leeds Conservatoire to pursue a degree in music production, he was already writing and recording his own material at home. Donkin's first single, “Catharsis,” has racked up more than 1,000,000 streams to date on Spotify, and a series of subsequent releases found similarly organic success including this spring's groovy, synth-filled “GEEK OUT!" (ft. quickly, quickly and The Breathing Experiment). We want to hear from you! Even beyond that moment of heroism, LaCorte is a shining example of a detention deputy. We talk about his philosophies of corrections, including the ways he makes sure inmates never feel dehumanized despite their incarceration. He uses a combination of command presence and humor to maintain order, and has the social and management skills to be the only deputy working in a direct supervision pod with 60 inmates. He works nights in Healthcare, and talks about the mental health and drug addiction crises that have such an impact on the inmates he oversees. Deputy LaCorte dispels the misconception that the jail is a depressing place to work. He says that the camaraderie at his job makes it a place he's happy to go to every night, and he hopes to encourage more smart, dedicated, ambitious young people see corrections as a good career path.Email us your questions and suggestions at lets56@pcsonet.comFollow us: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTubePCSO Website

“I like unique. Tell me something I don't know.” That certainly describes this week's guest. Tracy Boldt is the Director of CDI and Utilization Management at Essentia Health in Minnesota. Since September 2016 Boldt's role has included providing leadership, direction and support in the development and management of CDI and UM at multiple Essentia Health sites. In this role Boldt collaborates closely with the utilization team, physician partners, and coding manager system wide. Recently she helped implement a successful outpatient clinical documentation improvement program with an emphasis on Accountable Care Organization (ACO) partnership, risk adjustment, and population health. Tracy's path into healthcare did not follow a straight line. Admittedly she was not the most dedicated student. She started as a hairdresser before she got (mostly) serious, and healthcare became a calling. We review Tracy's career stops in nursing, CDI, a detour into consulting (for a firm, and then launching her own personal company), and her current entry into Essentia. Tracy also has a rich personal life. I'll go ahead and plug Cedar Point Resort and Campground, not only because I'm hoping I can parlay some free advertising into a discounted cabin, but it's also an incredibly interesting chapter in her life that has broader applicability to effective project management and staff leadership. If you want to learn how to succeed in a challenging role, listen to people that struggled and overcame adversity. And then, having succeeded, have refused to settle, but continue to seek out new ways to create impact. That certainly describes Tracy. Oh, and we discuss KISS. Everyone's favorite face-painted 70s rockers. Talk about unique. Enjoy!

A message about compliments.. We did a pole last week on Instagram asking you how you feel about compliments, what compliments you like receiving AND do you have a tendency to deflect compliments. Today is day 1 of our weeks worth of conversations about compliments. Today we pick apart the idea that you may have a bad habit of not hearing compliments that you regularly hear because they become templated or common to you. If that's you, do you have the same tendency when it comes to criticism or do you store criticism more willingly? We would love to get YOU involved in the conversation. Please email me at hello@embldnlabel.com or send me a message on Instagram www.instagram.com/tearoutthetags  There are two podcast episodes referenced in this episode.
