14 years in any professional sport is an eternity, especially in the very physical National Hockey League. John-Michael Liles grew up in Indiana and by the time he was in high school, it was apparent that hockey was his sport. He played on some elite teams during his teenage years and after high school had a successful college career at Michigan State.   During his time with the Spartans, he was drafted by the Avalanche and was a Hobey Baker Finalist his senior season. Shortly after his college career wrapped up in 2003, John-Michael was playing with the Avs affiliate, the Hershey Bears. A few months later, he was in an Avs uniform and scored his first NHL goal in October of 2003.  He'd spend several years playing solid defense for the Avalanche, becoming a fan favorite and racking up points and goals along the way. Good times rarely last in pro sports however and in 2011, John-Michael was traded to Toronto. A few years later, he was traded again, this time to the Hurricanes… just minutes before he was set to play for the Maple Leafs in the Outdoor Winter Classic. He'd be traded one more time (Boston) before retiring in 2017.  These days, John-Michael is back to being a fan favorite on the Avalanche broadcast team on Altitude Sports. He's also a husband and girl dad to two daughters.  Listen to John-Michael's story and conversation with @susiewargin on the Cut Traded Fired Retired Podcast. For more than a decade, few athletes have been as ubiquitous in Canadian athletics as Charles Philibert-Thiboutot. From a legendary university career at Université Laval that saw him help turn the Rouge et Or into the powerhouse they remain today, Charles quickly rose through the ranks on the elite scene, chalking up podium performances, national records, and championship titles on the roads, track, and cross country course while becoming a mainstay of Canadian national teams from Brazil to Budapest, Santiago to Tokyo. While his approachability has made him a favourite of both fans and competitors alike for years, it has been his remarkable versatility as an athlete across a variety of different surfaces and distances that has made his staying power in the sport so unique. And while Charles has made himself equally at home in a diamond league 1500m as he is in a muddy cross country 10k, there's still one event that remains as the final line item on a career bucket list that seems to stretch on forever, the mighty marathon. Now, the wait is finally over and the man they call CPT will take to the streets of NYC to tackle the TCS New York City marathon this Sunday, November 2nd, hoping to put an exclamation point on the final chapter of a career that will go down as one of the greats in Canadian distance running history. This week on the Shakeout Podcast, we welcome Charles back to the show in the lead up to New York, looking back at the moments that have defined his career thus far, as well as hearing why the long road of his professional career reaches its terminus only after 42.2 more kilometres through the streets of the Big Apple.Subscribe to The Shakeout Podcast feed on Apple, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you find your podcasts.Follow Charles on Social Media @CharlesPTSpecial thanks to this week's sponsor Altitude Sports!Shop now at Altitude Sports and enjoy up to 20% off your first order with the promo code “shakeout” Click here to order

It's Tuesday and we're looking at the biggest stories of the week. First, it's been five years and the Avalanche and Nuggets still aren't available on most Denver TVs! Kroenke Sports & Entertainment just hired a new guy who is promising to end the Altitude Sports vs. Comcast dispute for good, so can he pull it off? Then, Denver City Council is considering a proposal to ban sugary drinks in kid's meals at fast food restaurants, which one man says is just politicians attempting to “micromanage” their constituents. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi dissect these stories and share listener comments on The Epoch Times's billboards and how, exactly, you're supposed to eat oysters.  We went deep on the Altitude/Comcast dispute with our pal Jake Shapiro from Denver Sports back in 2021. Bree mentioned an episode of the If Books Could Kill podcast about the book “Nudge” by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. What do you think about a ban on sugary drinks?
