I love the world of stand-up comedy and I admire those who pursue it as a career. My guest today is Zainab Johnson who released her first special on Amazon Prime recently. After watching it, I couldn't get past how well she crafts a story and keeps you on the edge of your seat…all the meanwhile keeping you giggling. This is classy comedy! She has already compared Achbita and Bougnaoui to the decisions in Egenberger and the Caritas hospital case (IR v JQ) in her festschrift contribution for Allan Rosas. Unsurprisingly, she has been keeping an eye open for further developments in that case law (WABE and Müller, S.C.R.L (Religious clothing) and, most recently, Commune d'Ans (Grand Chamber, 28 November 2023). Additionally, she has also been looking at what the Court has been saying in relation to ritual slaughter of animals (as required for meat-eating observant Jews and Muslims). Notable cases include Liga van Moskeeën, Oeuvre d'assistance aux bêtes d'abattoirs (OABA) and Centraal Israëlitisch Constistorie. The case law of the European Court of Human Rights also addresses these issues: Eweida v UK on religious symbols in the workplace, and the very recent decision (13 February 2024) in Executief van de Moslims van België and Others v Belgium on banning ritual slaughter of animals without prior stunning. The cases are constitutionally important in terms of the deference shown to Member States; and in some respects, they are troubling for anyone who is religious and non-Christian.Discussion chaired by Dr Markus W. In this episode of the National Crawford Roundtable we discuss the Debt Deal in part 1 and then we'll look into Dodgers' Pride Night in part 2.  In Part 1:  the Debt Ceiling Deal "cuts" some spending, but not enough.  Democrat House Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Democrats got "nothing."  Liberals are raging, but so are some conservatives because it still increases spending.  Democrats got to keep their Student Loan forgiveness, their SNAP Program "no-work requirements" for able-bodied people 49 and older but now it is 54 and older, and they got a military increase of 3.2%.  Newt Gingrich says it's better than people think because it limits topline spending to 1% annual growth, well below inflation and well below Democrat demands.  It takes back tens of billions in unspent COVID funds.  In raw dollars, it is the largest reduction in spending growth in U.S. history.  It scales back some Green New Deal spending, approves a West Virginia Natural Gas pipeline cuts out most of the new IRS funding for those 87,000 new Agents, and it rejects Biden's proposed tax increases.  In Part 2: The L.A. Dodgers "Pride Night" is June 16th.  They have apologized to and re-invited the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" (hairy men dressing as sexualized Catholic Nun Drag queens) after having disinvited the order's LA chapter from its annual Pride Night celebration and rescinded a planned "community hero" award.  Would the MLB allow any club to have a "Mohammed Drag Queen Night" with drag queens dressed in sexualize Hijabs and Burkas?  A Buddha Drag Queen Night?

From the Watson Institute at Brown University, this is Trending Globally. I'm Dan Richards.  On September 13, 2022, a young Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini was detained by the country's ‘morality police' for improperly wearing her hijab.  Three days later, she was dead. Authorities claimed it was the result of a heart attack, but images of her in the hospital – bruised and bloodied – suggested otherwise.  Those images, along with the government's cover-up surrounding the details of her death, have sparked a protest movement in Iran unlike any the country has seen.  On this bonus episode of Trending Globally, Dan Richards spoke  with anthropologist and Director of the Center for Middle East Studies  Nadje Al-Ali about these protests, and about the unique role gender has come to play in them.  These protests are, and always have been, about much more than hijabs, as Nadje explains. They're part of a much longer story of political resistance in the Middle East. Many of us, especially in the West, would do well to understand that story. Questions? Comments? Ideas for topics or guests? The growing number of regime scandals and atrocities, he says, is catching up with Iran's hardline theocratic rulers, and their end, after more than 40 years in power, may finally be near. The death of Mahsa Amini is igniting protests across Iran — and it's drawing global attention to Iranians' anger and frustration with their ultra-conservative leaders.Read more:Earlier this month, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was detained by the so-called morality police in Tehran for violating Iran's law on headscarves and died several days later. In the days since, protesters have flooded the streets in cities across Iran. Many have been burning hijabs, symbolizing their frustration with the Islamic republic's restrictive rules and oppressive treatment of women. None of this comes without aggressive pushback from the Iranian government, however — including restricted internet access and cell service, police beatings of protesters, and enormous deployment of security forces. Foreign affairs reporter Miriam Berger explains the significance of these protests and what could happen next.
