This week, host Anne-Marie Zanzal chats with the very wise and funny Phillip Headrick. Phillip, is the host of the recently retired "Two Bottles Deep" podcast, a physical therapist, and Nashville-based comedian. Before he was the charming and confident person he is today, Phillip was a boy raised on a farm in rural Tennessee who was raised in a Christian cult known as "The Truth." As a young man in college, Phillip's realization that he was gay sparked an existential crisis that will have a familiar ring to anyone who has grown up in a conservative faith community. Sandra Partridge has forged a path for herself with professionalism and artistic sensitivity. Playing music can be fun. It can also involve years of hard work. Traditional music lessons are demanding and very skill-specific, meaning that a lot of time is directed to studying scores and learning how to be detail-oriented when representing historic musical works. What does it really mean to study piano in college? Being accepted to the major involves having a teacher in high school who knows how to coach for a successful audition. Difficult pieces must be selected that display a pianist’s best traits. Once the student is accepted and ideally, granted a scholarship, the reality is that music study demands commitment and total immersion. Hours of daily practice, fast study, memorization, constant technical development, lesson preparation, music theory focus, and comprehensive music classes all day is typical fare. When the piano major graduates, making the shift from solo piano study to making a living playing piano can be jarring and challenging. The soloist mindset, which was so nurtured during the college years often doesn’t immediately translate into serving others. Turning to the music she loved the most, Sandra found her post-piano major path. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin, she became a dance accompanist, transcribing movie themes and other dramatic music for the classes she accompanied. Striving to understand, support and delight, Sandra also wrote a book to help other pianists discover the musical needs of dancers. In 2014, she became a comedy improv pianist and plays shows at the Third Coast Comedy Club in Nashville. She shines in this musical comedienne role, using her extensive catalogue of pop culture riffs and extensive musical knowledge. In the silliness of the shows, she has also found her joy and continues to evolve her voice.
“People like the idea of being an artist more than the idea of practicing and becoming the absolute best.” - Matt Williams ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On this week's episode of The MAKE IT Podcast, we have a conversation with award-winning Actor, Matt Williams (@mattwilliamsinc).⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 2015, Matt starred in the award-winning short film, 'Everyday Yeti' written and directed by Motke Dapp, in which he was nominated for Best Actor. The following year, Matt teamed up with Dapp again, in the short film 'Lessons In Accidental Magic,' which won over a dozen awards, including a Best Actor nod for Matt. Matt is also known for his roles in films such as 'Shaken Not Stirred,' 'Introverts Anonymous' and the improvised performance art mocumentary, 'Pieces.' He has made an appearance on CMT's Nashville, and starred in the hit web series WTF?!, as well as appearing in commercials for brands such as Toyota, Valvoline, Zappos, Cotton: The Fabric of Our Lives, ADS Security, Cox Business and Sport Clips, among others. Later in 2016, Matt joined the Third Coast Comedy Training Center, where he quickly fell in love with the art of improvisation, leading Matt to create his troupe, The Varsity. The Varsity can be seen performing periodically at Third Coast Comedy Club in Nashville, TN. You know the biggest decision you have when releasing a CD - Independent or Label? That is the decision I was faced with on my new release “Thinking Real Loud”. This is my tenth CD. The previous nine I had done it all by myself. The recording, mixing, promoting, distribution - everything. This time around I thought about trying it a different. way. After much research I have found the pro’s and con’s of recording a CD independently versus working with a record label are fairly equal in risk and reward. You should weight both against each other honestly before you make your decision. There was one major factor, though, that led to my decision. Listen in for that. Releasing a CD Show Notes We cover several points today concerning releasing a CD. Here are several things to consider when choosing a label or doing it all by yourself include: Who has control of the experience? Do you have the ability to set deadlines realistically and effectively? How will Parkinson’s Law apply to project completion? What does the American Picker’s have in common with comedy? Can you get it recorded in one night? Why you shouldn’t be like Chili’s Are you able to choose, book and reserve a venue? Are you a skilled at the technical side of recording? Are you adept at marketing and promoting the CD Can you handle distribution? Can you collect royalties? As you can see releasing a CD can be quite a process.
