This is a special replay of an episode of the REJUVENAGING with Dr. Ron Kaiser podcast that was first posted on May 23rd, 2023Dr. Ron Kaiser is the host of the podcast REJUVENAGING® with Dr. Ron Kaiser, and in this episode he interviews brain health expert Dr. Marc Milstein. Dr. Milstein has written a book, The Age Proof Brain, which provides strategies to improve memory, protect immunity, and fight off dementia. According to Dr. Milstein, our power to improve brain function lies in the brain's connection with the rest of the body. The book covers topics such as sleep habits and environmental toxins, and offers integrative science-supported strategies to increase memory, fight off depression, improve mood, ignite energy, and even prevent dementia and non-genetic Alzheimer's disease.Dr. Marc Millstein was welcomed to the REJUVENAGING® with Dr. Ron Kaiser podcast to discuss the topic of aging and its effects on cognition. Dr. Millstein has a PhD in biological chemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology from UCLA. He discussed how there is an increase in cases of dementia and Alzheimer's due to people living longer and underlying conditions that drive memory loss. He stressed the importance of taking control of these conditions, such as heart health, diabetes, and lifestyle factors, in order to protect one's brain now and in the future. The conversation discussed how to maintain memory health as one ages. It was highlighted that genes are not the only factor when it comes to memory health, and that there are various other areas that need to be taken into consideration. These include sleep, nutrition, stress levels, activity levels, underlying conditions such as cardiovascular health, diabetes, metabolism, and gut health. It was also highlighted that there are treatments available for many of these conditions, and that it is important to optimize them in order to maintain a healthy brain. The conversation includes how memory and brain processing can improve or decline as people age. Multitasking becomes more difficult with age, and this can be a cause for concern. It is important to identify the root cause of memory issues, as they can often be treatable. Dr. Milstein suggests taking extra time to focus on one thing at a time, as our brains tend to forget information that we do not focus on for at least 10 seconds. This can be helpful in preventing people from having difficulty remembering things like where they put their keys or their car. Additionally, he suggests that analytical thinking and the ability to store information can improve with age. Lastly, it was discussed that there are some normal age-related declines that should not be of alarm, such as difficulty in adapting to new technology. In conclusion, there are many steps that can be taken to maintain brain health as one ages.DrMarcMilstein.comFacebookInstagramYouTubehttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1637741421?tag=randohouseinc7986-20 Hosted on Acast. On this edition we hear from author and community activist Cindy Barukh Milstein speaking on their latest book "Constellations of Care: Anarcha-Feminism in Practice." The book is described this way: "What do we do when the state has abandoned us? From failing health systems to housing crises to cascading ecological collapse, it's increasingly evident that state-centered politics do not protect us from the violence of colonialism and capitalism, fascism and patriarchy. In fact, they actively work to harm us. Anarchist feminism—or anarcha-feminism—shows us that the ways we tend to our social relations can build a new world inside the old one. We can take care of each other when nothing else will, supplying communal well-being and liberatory horizons. From communitarian kitchens to medic collectives, squatted social centers to queer theater troupes, Ljubljana to Mexico City, Constellations of Care powerfully underscores that we already have everything we need and desire in one another to carve out lives worth living." The Breakup Theory
Episode 14 - An Anarchism of Despair w/ Cindy Barukh Milstein at Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair

The Breakup Theory

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2024 55:54

On today's episode, I am presenting the talk that Cindy Barukh Milstein and I did at the Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair, which we called An Anarchism of Despair. When we planned to collaborate for the talk, we checked in on where we were mentally, emotionally, and politically in relation to the specific moment, filled with frustrations around anarchists' involvement in movements, and the walls that we run into time and time again. We wanted to lean into the despair, to look it in the face, and to learn from it how we might consider acting from this position. This is the description we wrote for the talk: After October 7, the upswell of Palestinian solidarity has been heartening. But in the mechanics of the movement itself, we have found ourselves stuck in outdated forms of protest, marching in circles, making demands that will never be heeded. It feels like each iteration of rebellion meets its end at the blatancy of power: we are shown again that those who govern won't help us. And all this while watching a genocide in real time, feeling desperate and powerless. We have the energy and will, but not the means. What can we do, then, with this spike of liberatory urges? This discussion will interrogate anarchism at this particular moment from the position of despair. Where does it meet its limits? Where does it show up to keep the energy going? Are we endlessly hitting our heads against the wall ? Or does our effort need to be seen in the long view? When faced with the impossibility of liberation and action, where do we go? We organize the talk around three central provocations, which essentially point to the ways our political actions, ideas, and horizons are circumscribed and therefore commit us to walking in circles. We then offer some thoughts about what anarchists actually do well and how we can use those practices to try to leave behind the useless forms of protest. I have included comments from two comrades who attended, Bonn and Jubilee V Debs, who made important contributions to the ideas. I keep coming down to anarchism as something that creates the possibility of action: it doesn't guarantee the consequences, but drives us to the edge where we can do something, rather than nothing. We turn away when there are no guarantees, stuck in our miserable comforts in this world, whether through the tired tropes of resistance or individual consumption as solace for work. While the state looks at us as if we are already dead, we can instead find a way to act like we are living, in the bursting of a moment that cannot be contained. [This episode originally aired June 2021.] In December 1955, Mrs. Rosa Parks made history by standing up to unjust segregation laws in Montgomery, Alabama, when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man—a courageous act that helped launch the now-famous Montgomery bus boycott. In the years that followed, Parks was often characterized as a seamstress who was simply tired after a long day. However, Parks wasn't tired from work—she was tired of being mistreated! While Parks is best known for that brave act of resistance, her activism spanned decades—and she continues to be a role model for rebel girls throughout the world today.    About the Narrator Anita Hill grew up on a farm in Oklahoma, the youngest of 13 children. She graduated from Oklahoma State University and received her J.D. from Yale Law School. Starting her career in Washington, D.C., Hill worked in private practice as well as at the Education Department and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 1989, Hill, was the first African American tenured at the University of Oklahoma, College of Law. Currently, she teaches courses on gender, race, policy and law at Brandeis University and serves as counsel to the law firm of Cohen, Milstein, Sellers and Toll, where she advises on class action discrimination cases. Professor Hill leads the Hollywood Commission working with entertainment industry companies and unions to eradicate harassment, discrimination and power abuse. She serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations and has authored a variety of publications, offered television and radio commentary, and presented to hundreds of audiences around the globe Credits This podcast is a production of Rebel Girls and is based on the book series Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. This episode was produced by Isaac Kaplan-Woolner. Sound design and mixing by Camille Stennis. This episode was written by Alexis Stratton and proofread by Simi Kadirgamar. What are the actions we can take  to maintain our long-term brain health? This week, we discuss this and more with Dr. Marc Milstein, author of The Age-Proof Brain. It turns out that even small behavioral changes, such as eating less processed foods and regularly challenging yourself with activities like playing an instrument will support overall brain fitness and neuroplasticity. Furthermore, Dr. Marc also breaks down the surprising link between gut and brain health. What kind of SuperAger are you? Take our quiz today and find out! These bacteria have been around much longer than us, and so the things that they like to eat are the things that were around much longer than us, long before we got here, and the bad bacteria tend to feed on the things that we created.”“There's definitely foods that are great for brain health, but it's really about variety and we really have evidence that it's a synergistic relationship. It's not one food item that is just like this brain-boosting magic food. It's how the foods work together and that's why we believe that supplements can be beneficial, but they're not in many cases as beneficial as dietary changes, because what's in the food works together with other nutrients.”“So what we see is that it's not about this stress-free lifestyle. Our brain is like a car, I like to say, and if you don't drive it, it falls apart, and if you over drive it, it falls apart. Stress is a burst of cortisol. Say I want to get something done. There's a challenge, I want to tackle something. All those moments of stress are actually good for our brain because they release cortisol and there's a part of our brain called the hippocampus which is really important for memory, and a squirt of cortisol in a moment of stress actually helps the hippocampus stay strong.”Get in Touch with Dr. MarcThe Age-Proof BrainWebsiteContact

Mark Millstein was welcomed to the REJUVENAGING® with Dr.
