The Conquering Truth
God's Blueprint for Community: How the Church Should Lead the Way

The Conquering Truth

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2025 92:34

When you consider the fact that God calls those He has called out front the world, a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and His own special people, it should be obvious that He intended the church to be the ideal form of community. What group could have more in common and closeness than one made alive by His Spirit and called for His purposes into His family and household? But when we look at the world, we can see a different picture. While the church has a greater sense of community than the world, it does not seem to be a light to the nations in this regard. In fact, over the last sixty years, the American sense of community has been breaking down. And while some people want to accuse technology of causing this breakdown, in most cases, technology only facilitates the things we already desired. One of the things that has happened in the church is that we have shifted our focus from God saving the church as one body to be his bride, and instead have almost exclusively focused on God saving each of us as individuals. And because a strong sense of community requires one to focus, not on himself but on the group and what they hold in common, this singular focus wars against the sense of community that God desires for the church. In this episode, we want to look at the ways that God has designed the church to be the model community for the world, and how the practices He instituted and called the church to should strengthen rather than weaken this sense of community. Please join us as we discuss this very necessary topic.Listen to the audio version here: https://theconqueringtruth.com/2025/04/gods-blueprint-for-community-how-the-church-should-lead-the-way-ep-214-audio/Thumbnail image by Thomas Hawk on Flickr under CC BY-NC 2.0Timecodes00:00:00 What Is Community00:03:09 The Church's Example00:10:43 Small Groups00:13:58 Our Mission00:26:05 Authority00:34:53 Shared Vision00:45:36 Disasters00:56:33 One Body01:06:05 Hospitality01:14:29 Impacting the CommunityProduction of Reformation Baptist Church of Youngsville, NCPermanent Hosts - Dan Horn, Charles Churchill and Joshua HornTechnical Director - Timothy KaiserTheme Music - Gabriel Hudelson

If the project is approved, the Phillips 66 refinery in Rodeo (pictured) would produce more than a billion gallons per year of biofuel products, making it one of the largest biofuel refineries in the world. Photo by Thomas Hawk. Earlier this month, a Contra Costa County Superior Court ordered the oil company, Phillips 66 to put on hold its Rodeo refinery's transition from processing crude oil to producing biofuels, until the county had addressed major environmental flaws in its environmental analysis of the project. The court ruling was in response to one of two lawsuits filed by environmental groups in 2022, challenging Contra Costa County's approval of two proposed biofuel refinery conversions — the Phillips 66 one in Rodeo that would produce more than a billion gallons per year of biofuel products, making it one of the largest biofuel refineries in the world, and the Marathon-Tesoro refinery in nearby Martinez that could eventually produce more than 700,000 gallons per year of biofuel products. To understand what lies ahead in the legal battle against these two projects, as well at the local and global implications of California's push toward biofuels, Earth Island Journal editor and Terra Verde host Maureen Nandini Mitra talks with Shana Lazerow, legal director of Communities for a Better Environment, which, along with the Center for Biological Diversity, is suing the county over the two projects, Ben Clark a student attorney from the Stanford Environmental Law Clinic, which is representing the litigants in court, and Stephanie Safdi, a supervising attorney and lecturer at the law clinic. NOTE: The revised EIR for the Phillips 66 Rodeo Renewed Project is currently open for public comment. The post Challenging the Bay Area Biofuel Refinery Projects appeared first on KPFA.

Rex Heuermann, a former public official, faces serious charges linked to the unsolved Long Island Serial Killer case. The charges were brought forward due to an exhaustive investigation that utilized advanced forensic techniques and leveraged digital footprints Heuermann left behind.   The initial link to Heuermann was made through comprehensive cell tower data analysis, connecting him to calls made to victims' families using what has been referred to as the Barthelemy Phone. Suspicious activities on this phone, including calls to victims' families and unusual cessation of activity, coincided with Heuermann's travel schedule.   Further investigation revealed Heuermann's illicit use of burner phones and online accounts under fictitious names. These were primarily used to engage with sex workers and conduct disturbing searches related to sadistic, torture-related, and child pornography. Additionally, these burner accounts were used to track developments in the investigation into the serial murders, revealing Heuermann's attempt to stay one step ahead of the investigators.   In a significant discovery, a burner email account linked to Heuermann, registered under the pseudonym "Thomas Hawk," was found to have conducted thousands of searches about sex workers, disturbing pornography, and ongoing serial killer investigations.   Heuermann's residence has also been implicated in the investigation. Forensic investigations revealed that DNA samples from his residence matched those found on female hairs on three of the victims, effectively linking the crimes directly to his household. These DNA profiles were matched with a high degree of certainty, excluding most of the North American population.   Another damning piece of evidence was the recovery of a male hair from one of the victim's burlap wrappings. Advanced DNA analysis matched this hair to Heuermann, further solidifying his involvement in the crimes.   The evidence indicates that Heuermann not only had direct contact with the victims but also went to great lengths to evade detection, including using burner phones, fake online accounts, and careful monitoring of the ongoing investigation.   Rex Heuermann is in custody, facing multiple charges related to the Long Island Serial Killer case. If convicted, he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. As the case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the cruel capacity of individuals and the vital importance of ongoing advancements in forensic and investigative techniques. What does it sound like when you change your mind? That's the name of the book Seth Godin was about to publish when James interviewed him. He only printed 5,500 copies. And he's not printing anymore. He doesn't view a book as just pages surrounded by two covers. He makes a 3-dimensional object that's beautiful to look at and read.“It's not new,” he said on my podcast. “It's the best of the last four years of my work. And it's illustrated with hundreds of photos by Thomas Hawk, who's the most prolific and talented internet photographer.”The book weighs 18 pounds. And it's 800 pages long.I asked him about art and marketing… and he told me about life.A) START FROM THE BEGINNING“No business, no project, no novel ever started big,” Seth said.It started with fear, uncertainty, excitement, possibility. Tons of “what if's” that lead to real action. And real action halts the what if's. The "what if's" turn to "what is".Seth said, “Instead of saying, ‘I need to leap to the middle,' say, ‘I'm going to start with people who want to engage with me.'”All successes start with one person. That's it. One person, then two, then three.Success is a curve. We all know it. Don't try to cheat the curve.B) KNOW YOUR WORLDI asked Seth, “How do you know what the world wants to hear?”“Well, first of all, never the whole world,” he said. “You pick your world.”Where do you hurt? Where do you feel a knot? Can you loosen it up and ease the pressure? Can you create something for the people (or person) who want to love what you want to love?C) WHAT DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SAY?We talked about Facebook. And the Lays Potato Chip guy who re-designed the bag. His job was to make it sound crunchier.Kids had slamming competitions. Who could slam a soda the fastest? So Coke-A-Cola created a bottle with a mouthpiece meant to maximize chugging efficiency. They sold products. But it's the message that matters.I always say: message over money.Invention happens at the edges. Between heart and lungs, breath and vocal cords is the message. It's the thing you want to say. The thing you're afraid to say.“What really matters isn't what time you posted on Facebook,” Seth said. “What matters is, what did you care enough to say?D) ANYONE CAN LEAD…“'Purple Cow‘ says, ‘How do I sit in my office and make a thing that people talk about?'”“What ‘Tribes‘ says is ‘Now that anyone can stand up and lead (because anyone can have a media channel… because anyone can make a connection) will you choose to lead? And if you're going to lead, who will you lead? How will you connect with the people you're leading? That is marketing, but it's also life.”E) CULTURE BEATS EVERYTHING“No one has a Suzuki tattoo,” Seth said.“What's a Suzuki tattoo?” I asked. Then I got it. Harley Davidson makes half their revenue licensing its brand. T-shirts, jackets, etc.“If you're in the Harley tribe, you can't show up on a Suzuki,” he said.“Tribes aren't about the alpha to the omega. Leaders always go away. The alpha person dies or moves on. But the tribe doesn't. The tribe persists. Because culture beats everything. Scenes have a culture. Tribes have a culture. It's the culture that determines how an organization makes its choices, how a nation will evolve.”I've said this before. It doesn't matter who the president is. What matters is who you surround yourself with. Who's in your tribe? Who's in your heart? And if they're toxic to your creativity or well-being, detox now.“The Beatles didn't invent teenagers. I'm not saying we invent our tribe. We just show up to lead them.”I didn't invent the choose yourself community. The cubicle job did.F) SHOW UPI'll never say what other people should do. I just say what I like to do. I say what gets me past just getting by.“Half my blog posts are below average,” Seth said.I asked if he feels bad.Intellectually, I understand failure. But it still hurts. It can turn your life upside down. I lost everything more than once. And maybe you're reading this because you have to… or you're afraid of losing everything.“I'm talking about [creating] generous work with good intent… that didn't work.” That's the failure we need to show up for.“I show up,” Seth said.G) DON'T WRESTLE WITH INFINITYI didn't know what that meant.“I am almost done wrestling with infinity,” he said.We had half an hour left in the interview. I didn't interrupt.I couldn't.I was captivated. My mind expands when I'm seconds away from hearing someone's genius. My vision slows and the inside of my ears soften. It's like my body is creating room.“I made the book I wanted.”“I only printed 5,500 copies of the book. And there's not going to be a second printing. That's all there is.”He doesn't have to chase. He already broke even and the best part is he chose himself.“Now there's not an infinity of upside.”He didn't need approval from publishers, his boss, a network… He didn't write for a bestseller list. He was compelled. And he created. He made what he wanted to make.  “Here's my definition of art,” he said. “Art is when a human being does something that might not work…”And my whole body nodded. He went on… changing my mind.Links and Resources:Seth's upcoming book “What Does It Sound Like When You Change Your Mind?”Read Seth's books:The New York Times, BusinessWeek, and Wall Street Journal bestseller, “Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us“A New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestseller, “The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick)“A New York Times bestseller, “Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?““Purple Cow, Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable““All Marketers are Liars: The Underground Classic That Explains How Marketing Really Works–and Why Authenticity Is the Best Marketing of All““Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers“Join Seth's newsletter and get his latest blog posts at SethGodin.comSeth's “alt MBA” courseFollow Seth on Facebook + TwitterAlso by Seth Godin:The Icarus Deception““Poke the Box““We Are All Weird““Whatcha Gonna Do with That Duck?““V Is for Vulnerable““Meatball Sundae““Free Prize Inside““Unleashing The Ideavirus““Small Is The New Big““Survival Is Not Enough““The Big Red Fez“Also Mentioned:Thomas Hawk Photography ------------What to write and publish a book in 30 days? The ConcoPhillips oil refinery Rodeo, California. Environmental justice advocates are disappointed with the new plan's reliance on carbon capture and storage (CCS) for fossil fuel infrastructure like oil refineries and gas-fired power plants. Photo by Thomas Hawk. California's new climate change strategy aims to make the state carbon neutral by 2045 and slash greenhouse gas emissions 48 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 — a more ambitious target than the existing mandate to reduce emissions 40 percent by 2030. While the new plan has some significant improvements, many climate advocates and policy experts say it still has some major issue, including an over-reliance on controversial technofixes that also have environmental justice implications. Terra Verde host and Earth Island Journal editor Maureen Nandini Mitra, discusses the high points and low points of the plan with Ryan Schleeter, Communications Director of The Climate Center and Faraz Rizvi of  the Asian Pacific Environmental Network. His mother, Anne Gorsuch Burford, also had a short stint with the US government as President Reagan’s Environmental Protection Agency or EPA administrator where she tried to cut up to 30% of the staff which would have resulted in $17.6M for severance pay alone (Washington Post, https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/02/01/neil-gorsuchs-mother-once-ran-the-epa-it-was-a-disaster/?utm_term=.d6f55e53613b) and stopped filing new court cases going after big polluters. Her scandalous mismanagement of the EPA eventually led to her premature resignation. You may be wondering, “Why does this story sound so familiar?” That’s because the current administration is doing the exact same thing again today (Independent, http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-budget-clean-air-water-attack-global-warming-epa-warning-a7639181.html). -In all of the chaos over the last 6 months, probably the smartest thing I have heard is this: Politicians strategically use distractions to keep us from looking at the core issues. Case in point. When Donald Trump accuses Obama of wiretapping him, it probably has more to do with keeping the rest of us occupied with his circus than in looking at the finer details of whatever god-forsaken thing he is pushing in Washington. Like his hair - an unnatural distraction from his mouth. So you may have heard of his disastrous budget proposal - a proposal which would give the military a 10% increase - an increase that is equal to the entire annual military budget of the United Kingdom alone.. and a budget that would slash the before mentioned EPA, Small Business Administration, Department of Justice, Meals on Wheels, NASA, National Endowment for the Arts, after school programs and basically any other agency with a vowel in their name. That’s the equivalent of taking away little Tommy’s books, food and video games - and then giving him a taser to play with. Democrats are not much better. After squeezing Bernie Sanders out of the primaries by doing everything in their power to silence him, they have learned nothing from the loss of Hillary Clinton. Yes, she received more votes, but she still lost - voter suppression be damned. And did any of the Democratic party lose their leadership positions? No. In fact, with the recent election of former labor secretary Tom Perez to DNC chair, it appears they’re not even concerned about it. So what do they do? They claim Russia interfered with the election - a claim which finally is and should be investigated properly - but to this point remains a claim without certifiable proof. That’s because the longer the media train keeps us going down this modern DNC-led McCarthyism rabbit hole, the less today the Democratic leadership looks like a group of lemurs playing with a smart phone. What does it sound like when you change your mind? That's the name of Seth Godin's next book. He only printed 5,500 copies. And he's not printing anymore. He doesn't just view a book as pages surrounded by two covers. He makes a 3-dimensional object that's beautiful to look at and read. "It's not new," he said on my podcast. "It's the best of the last four years of my work. And it's illustrated with hundreds of photos by Thomas Hawk, who's the most prolific and talented internet photographer." The book weighs 18 pounds. And it's 800 pages long. I asked him about art and marketing... and he told me about life. A) START FROM THE BEGINNING "No business, no project, no novel ever started big," Seth said. It started with fear, uncertainty, excitement, possibility. Tons of "what if's" that lead to real action. And real action halts the what if's. The what if's turn to what is. Seth said, "Instead of saying, 'I need to leap to the middle,' say, 'I'm going to start with people who want to engage with me.'" All successes start with one person. That's it. One person, then two, then three. Success is a curve. We all know it. Don't try to cheat the curve. B) KNOW YOUR WORLD I asked Seth, "How do you know what the world wants to hear?" "Well, first of all," he said, "never the whole world. You pick your world." Where do you hurt? Where you do you feel a knot? Can you loosen it up and ease the pressure? Can you create something for the people who want to love what you want to love? C) WHAT DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SAY? We talked about Facebook. And the Lays Potato Chip guy who re-designed the bag. His job was to make it sound crunchier. Kids had slamming competitions. Who could slam a soda the fastest? So Coke-A-Cola created a bottle with a mouthpiece meant to maximize chugging efficiency. They sold product. But it's the message that matters. I always say: message over money. Invention happens at the edges. Between heart and lungs, breath and vocal chords is the message. It's the thing you want to say. The thing you're afraid to say. "What really matters isn't what time you posted on Facebook," Seth said. "What matters is, what did you care enough to say? D) ANYONE CAN LEAD... "'Purple Cow' says, 'How do I sit in my office and make a thing that people talk about?'" "What 'Tribes' says is 'Now that anyone can stand up and lead (because anyone can have a media channel... because anyone can make connection) will you choose to lead? And if you're going to lead, who will you lead? How will you connect the people you're leading? That is marketing, but it's also life." E) CULTURE BEATS EVERYTHING "No one has a Suzuki tattoo," Seth said. "What's a Suzuki tattoo?" I asked. Then I got it. Harley Davidson makes half their revenue licensing their brand. T-shirts, jackets, etc. "If you're in the Harley tribe, you can't show up on a Suzuki," he said. "Tribes aren't about the alpha to the omega. Leaders always go away. The alpha person dies or moves on. But the tribe doesn't. The tribe persists. Because culture beats everything. Scenes have a culture. Tribes have a culture. It's culture that determines how an organization make its choices, how a nation will evolve." I've said this before. It doesn't matter who the president is. What matters is who you surround yourself with. Who's in your tribe? Who's in your heart? And if they're toxic to your creativity or well-being, detox now. "The Beatles didn't invent teenagers. I'm not saying we invent our tribe. We just show up to lead them." I didn't invent the choose yourself community. The cubicle job did. I'll never say what other people should do. I just say what I like to do. I say what gets me past just getting by. F) SHOW UP "Half my blog posts are below average," Seth said. I asked if he feels bad. Intellectually, I understand failure. But it still hurts. It can turn your life upside down. I lost everything more...

But it still hurts. It can turn your life upside down. I lost everything more than once. And maybe you’re reading this because you have to… or you're afraid of losing everything. “I’m talking about [creating] generous work with good intent... that didn’t work.” That’s the failure we need to show up for. “I show up,” Seth said. G) DON'T WRESTLE WITH INFINITY I didn't know what that meant. "I am almost done wrestling with infinity," he said. We had half an hour left in the interview. I didn't interrupt. I couldn't. I was captivated. My mind expands when I’m seconds away from hearing someone’s genius. My vision slows and the inside of my ears soften. It’s like my body is creating room. "I made the book I wanted." "I only printed 5,500 copies of the book. And there's not going to be a second printing. That's all there is.” He doesn't have to chase. He already broke even and the best part is he chose himself. "Now there's not an infinity of upside." He didn't need approval from publishers, his boss, a network… He didn’t write for a bestseller list. He was compelled. And he created. He made what he wanted to make.   "Here's my definition of art,” he said. “Art is when a human being does something that might not work..." And my whole body nodded. He went on… changing my mind. As we edge ever closer to election day in the U.S., Sanford professor Peter Feaver argues it’s time to critically examine the country’s grand strategy. He says the need to do so is becoming ever more pressing. He hopes the next president will assess the underlying assumptions of the country's grand strategy and have a sense of urgency to deal with what he calls a foreign policy crisis. Peter Feaver is Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Duke. He also serves as Director of the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy. He served in the White House during two administrations. Feaver talks with Sanford's Dean, Kelly Brownell. Our coverage of the pilot pick ups continues with NBC. There are a few projects that we are pretty excited about. NBC was one of our favorite networks when we were kids and we are pulling for it to make a comeback. Ratings for the network have been kinda low, so they could use a hit. We’re calling this episode, “NBSee US! No? You have to say it with a bit of an accent for it to be effective. We have fond memories of seeing the network’s promos for the Fall season. What were your favorite network promos or did you even take note of them when you were a kid?
