Everything the light touches...is Disney's kingdom; and that means we'll be getting live-action remakes of classic Disney favorites until they run out of movies to remake. This week marks the official release of Jon Favreau's The Lion King. Seeing as how that movie was such a big part of J and Q's lives, this week's episode is dedicated to our thoughts about the upcoming film and the definitive list of the Top 5 Best Disney Live-Action Remakes! In order to get good perspective, Q and J go back through history to discuss all the Disney remakes we've gotten so far, even going back to 1993's The Jungle Book starring Sam Neill! We know some of you out there liked, Maleficent, and we try to figure out why while fondly remembering 101 Dalmatians with Glenn Close and doing everything we can to forget Tim Burton's Dumbo. Come on, let's raid the House of Mouse's trash together!
EJ and Tori join Allen and Gerald for a wide-ranging discussion, including everyone's reaction to the Joker trailer, Tim Burton's Dumbo, Shazam!, the past, present, and future of the Marvel and DC cinematic universes, and much more! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Three Lodge Dumbos somehow found themselves watching Tim Burton's Dumbo in 4DX at the Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE 14. The 4DX shenanigans were a bit subdued and we have our theories as to why. As for Disney's Tim Burton's Dumbo, it was rough ride that required some serious self-medicating with alcohol and drugs beforehand. We try our darnedest to stay positive through this review and the cast gets some praise including Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Alan Arkin. But the gleam in the eye of CG Dumbo didn't quite have the charm of the animated original Dumbo (1941). Next Disney trip: Aladdin!
On this week's episode, Jon reviews Tim Burton's Dumbo remake, DC's Shazam!, both versions of Pet Sematary, and the biopic of Ann Atwater and C.P. Ellis The Best of Enemies. Then he has a discussion on overcoming brand loyalty when it comes to movies.
Erin and Paul review two modern-day updates of Shakespearean plays: the 1999 comedy 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, based on THE TAMING OF THE SHREW and starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger; and Michael Almereyda's 2000 version of HAMLET, starring Ethan Hawke, Kyle MacLachlan, Bill Murray and Julia Stiles. Plus: our quick takes on Tim Burton's DUMBO remake, THE BEACH BUM, DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE and a passel of new Jordan Peele TV and movie projects.

This week's Cinema Royale is loaded up with reviews, so I had to ask AwardsCircuit.com's Karen Peterson to join me on breaking 'em all down! First up, Disney soars back into theaters with Tim Burton's DUMBO! Is the flying elephant with the jumbo ears as magical now as he once was? Plus we'll take a look at the gripping true-life thriller HOTEL MUMBAI starring Dev Patel and Armie Hammer, and prison drama THE MUSTANG starring Matthias Schoenaerts, Jason Mitchell, and Bruce Dern. Finally, I'll give my thoughts on Jordan Peele's comments about hiring white male leads, and why he was right to say what he did.

Listen in on the sound check, and hear all about the special "Friend Like Me" Meet and Greet package. Next: Disneyland has announced a few significant new rules, and we talk about the now smoke-free parks, the ban on ice, and anti-wagon bias. Kristen then comments on Jessie's Critter Carousel, and we review Tim Burton's Dumbo, and wonder what happened there.
First off, we apologize for the slightly worse audio mixing on this episode: It's Leitch's fault, he thought his mic was plugged in but wasn't. Sorry. Three new movies this week: Tim Burton's "Dumbo," John Lee Hancock's "The Highwaymen" and whatever the hell Harmony Korine is doing with "The Beach Bum." Also, Grierson talks briefly about "Diane." Dumbo is one of the cornerstone cartoons of Walt Disney Pictures. It is the movie that helped them rebound after Pinocchio and Fantasia both lost the studio money in 1941. Dumbo is almost as iconic as Mickey Mouse. He is one of the characters that is readily recognizable from just a silhouette. That is one of the reasons I was surprised Disney decided to make a live action retelling of Dumbo. Patrick and I were both indifferent to Tim Burton's Dumbo. Even with a star studded cast of Danny Devito, Colin Farrell, and Michael Keaton we were not enamored with the movie. There were several references to the original movie, the best one being the dancing pink elephants. Disney also let Tim Burton poke a little fun at Disneyland with his theme park called "Dreamland". Disney is usually really strict about any mention of or allusion to their intellectual property, so I was happy to see they allowed this. For us, there just was no emotional connection to any of the characters in the movie. I fully expected to start ugly crying when they separated Dumbo from his mother. When that moment occurred in the movie my eyes didn't even water up. For me the whole movie just seemed very flat and unemotional. After talking to the audience we found we were in the minority. Most of the movie-goers gave the movie high praise and really enjoyed it. We did notice that nearly all the people we spoke to had NOT seen the original Disney Dumbo cartoon. Not sure if that has any direct correlation, but it was just a weird fact we noted. Online review sites are putting Dumbo around 50% approval. Closer inspection reveals most of the reviews are either very high and glowing reviews or the are very low and scathing reviews. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. It seems you either love or hate Dumbo. I judge a movie by what I would do if it was playing on TV. If I was flipping through the channels and came across Dumbo... I would keep flipping channels. Our take is, this version of Dumbo was made for those who are unfamiliar with the original. This movie will introduce Dumbo to a new generation of movie goers. This is likely the plan Disney had all along. Instead of re-hashing the old story again, shake it up and make it modern so it appeals to the new generation. This is how Disney will remain a powerhouse in the entertainment field. They are replenishing their audience base. For old fogies like us.... the original still exists. I ain't mad at ya Disney, but I still prefer the original. According to the audience members we spoke to I can highly recommend this movie for families to take the kiddos to. Maybe show them the original first. Did you see Dumbo? Did you like it? Did you see the original? Let us know in the comments.
