In a city where the rents are too high, the subways are too slow, and morale barely hovers above cope, repertory options might make such troubles worthwhile. So one thinks while looking over Mikio Naruse: The World Betrays Us, a career-spanning, 35mm-rich, two-cinema retrospective that began last weekend at Japan Society and will continue at Metrograph. It was my pleasure to sit down with those theaters' respective programmers, Alexander Fee and Edo Choi, for a discussion of Naruse's necessity in both theatrical and celluloid contexts, titles of particularly special note, and––most importantly––the best places to eat in each institution's neighborhood. Japan Society: https://japansociety.org/film/mikio-naruse-the-world-betrays-us/ Metrograph: https://metrograph.com/category/mikio-naruse/ On the subject of film programming, I'll also note that my screening of Cymbeline (with filmmaker Michael Almereyda present for a Q&A) is this Friday––tickets may be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/amnesiascope-cymbeline-with-michael-almereyda-qa-tickets-1352522103019?aff=ebdsoporgprofile

Director Christian Petzold discusses his new film, Afire, with fellow Director Michael Almereyda in a Q&A at the DGA theater in New York. In the conversation, Petzold discusses the autobiographical elements of the film, the meaning and thought process behind the encroaching fire, and its dystopian as well as its pandemic influences. The film tells the story of a group of young friends who vacation in a house by the Baltic Sea as an encroaching forest fire threatens the group. As the days grow hotter and the fire nears, both temperature and tensions rise, allowing emotions of happiness, lust and love to give way to jealousies, resentments and tensions among the group. Join Alex and guest host Sophie Halliday as they chat about the historical and psychological impact of Stanley Milgram's famous experiments on obedience and social influence in Michael Almereyda's Experimenter (2015), the other historical psychology movie that came out that year. This biopic stars Peter Sarsgaard as the titular character, with Winona Ryder, Jim Gaffigan, and several other star appearances as participants in the obedience studies. This witty drama-comedy takes the audience into the creation and data collection of the shock studies, but also other social influence experiments Milgram conducted over his 30ish year career. There are so many fourth wall breaks, you feel like Milgram is talking directly to the audience, to get his side of the story that followed him throughout his career. Would you shock someone because the experiment — AND SCIENCE! — demanded it? We had the pleasure of interviewing Bryan Senti over Zoom video.Rising composer and violinist/violist Bryan Senti's new album Manu is out now on Naïve Records.Manu is the first crossover album for the classically trained Senti, a first-generation Cuban/Mexican- and Colombian-American, combining western neo-classical traditions with the Latin American folk music his parents grew up with.Unique among classical releases, the parts of Manu were recorded individually, enabling the record to be released in Dolby Atmos as well as with a traditional audio mix. This unusual recording process gave engineer Francesco Donadello a unique opportunity to push the mixes, creating an illusion of three-dimensionality that plays on the psychedelic character of the music. In 2020, Senti turned 38 and had his first child. “When I thought about the stories that I wanted to impart to her, the things I wanted her to learn from me, I thought back on what things I had learned as a child, or wished I had learned,” he says of writing Manu. “What I wished I had learned was an ability to cherish both a Hispanic and American identity equally.”Bryan Senti is based in Los Angeles; recent collaborations include projects with Dustin O'Halloran and Peter Gregson for Deutsche Grammophon. His film and TV career began with Michael Almereyda's Experimenter in 2014 and since then he has worked on multiple films and TV shows including the BAFTA winning series “Save Me” (2021) by Lennie James. Currently he's scoring the BBC 3 musical “Mood” by Nicôle Lecky. In addition to working on classical music, Senti's experimental pop project Ex Mykah is signed to the London-based Kowloon Records and his LP 16, 17 was released in 2018. He also collaborated with Mark Ronson on his production Carbon Life, performed by the Royal Ballet, and has toured and recorded for the Canadian singer-songwriter Feist.Senti received a master's in music composition from The Yale School of Music in 2009.We want to hear from you! With plot twists that depend on poor facial recognition, one-sided bets over cuckoldry, one of the most idiotic kings in Shakespeare, and a truly villainous stepson whose beheading we are unfairly denied on stage, Shakespeare's “Cymbeline” is an interesting and often forgotten play in the Shakespeare canon. Will and James discuss which of these twists is most incredible as well as the Bard's portrait of Cloten, the aforementioned stepson whose incel tendencies lead to depravity, and what we should make of the play's British patriotism and ambivalent relationship to the Roman Empire.CreditsIntro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous)Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous)Illustrative Excerpts: “Cymbeline,” dir. Once again, we've found two VERY similar films to talk about. This time we look at two black & white vampire movies set in New York City, with VERY big ideas, awesome cinematography and great music. We start off with 1995's The Addiction from director Abel Ferrara. It stars Lili Taylor as a graduate student who is attacked by a vampire and begins to turn. It presents vampirism as a parable for a number of things and goes into some very heady places at times. We follow that with 1994's Nadja from director Michael Almereyda and produced by David Lynch (who also turns in a small role as a morgue assistant). It stars the luminous Elina Lowensohn as the titular Nadja, a child of Dracula who must go to Brooklyn to see her estranged brother after the death of their father. It has a touch of quirkiness that really makes the whole film shine. We liked both and recommend them fully. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. ...what can one say about the Melancholy Dane that hasn’t already been said? It’s the big one, the work that casts the longest shadow in all of English literature outside of the King James Bible. We quote it without thinking. It helped inspire The Lion King. And its most famous soliloquy has launched a thousand parodies. Will and James break down the epic monologues, the bloody action, the meditations on mortality, depression, mental illness, tortured love affairs, murder, suicide, conspiracy, invasion, and a savagely bloody denouement in which (spoiler alert!) everyone dies. // CREDITS // Intro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous); Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous); Illustrative Excerpts: “Tales from the Public Domain,” The Simpsons, dir., Mike B. Does a narrator telling us that an event we see portrayed in the film is “pretty surely not how it happened” allow us to question the veracity of everything we see? Who is singing karaoke, Nikola Tesla or Ethan Hawke? They may not agree on the answers, but what they do agree on is that this is a film that takes risks, even if trips over itself, stumbles, and struggles to tell a coherent story. Movie Trailer Reviews

Nikola Tesla is one of the most influential and yet obscure inventors in modern history. A lot of the technology that we enjoy today can be traced back to his ideas, patents and inventions. Yet most people still don't know much about the man. Unfortunately, Michael Almereyda's Tesla isn't going to do much to expand people's understanding of the man.  Tesla is frustrating 102 minutes. This is a film that suffers from an identity crisis due to Almereyda's uncertainty of the film he was trying to make. Was this film supposed to delve more into who Nikola Tesla was and give a historical background? Was it supposed to focus on his historical achievements and why they were so important? Was it supposed to tie Tesla's inventions and genius with today's technology? Amazingly, the film sticks its toe in each of those things yet does nothing to make them compelling or interesting. Ethan Hawke is not a bad actor but was not the right choice for Tesla. While Tesla might have been a bit awkward, he was still a presence that attracted people to him. Hawke's portrayal is void of any real emotion or charm or charisma. Eve Hewson does what she can but the script does her and her character (Anne Morgan) no justice. Tesla essentially turns Morgan into an inconsequential character whose sole purpose is to be a sometimes narrator for the story and a way to introduce Tesla to more powerful men.  Tesla is a wasted opportunity. At least with Nikola Tesla, his inventions and impact on the world will be remembered. The same cannot be said for this film   Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! One of my rituals when I go to the cinema (remember the cinema? The place with the big screen where you sit in the dark next to lots of people and have a collective experience?) Well, when I go I like to sit through all the credits at the end because I'm always amazed at how many people it takes to make something that's 90 minutes long. It's such a vast network of vital, interconnecting people. And one of those vital people is a music supervisor. I like to think of them as a DJ or selector for a movie but of course it's far more complicated than that. Which is why I have on today's episode, Lucy Bright to tell us more about it.With a degree in History of Art, Lucy started out at Mute Records during her gap year Mute records represent the likes of Nick Cave, New Order, Depeche Mode, and Goldfrapp. She then moved to Warner Classics for six years before leaving to manage acclaimed composer Michael Nyman - he wrote the music for the Oscar winning film The Piano & The 2018 Alexander McQueen documentary amongst many others. She was at music publishing company Music Sales for 10 years overseeing an extraordinary roster of film composers including Gabriel Yared (Cold Mountain,The English Patient), Ludovico Einaudi, Philip Glass, Nico Muhly (The Reader), Hildur Guðnadóttir (the woman who won the Oscar and every award going this year for her scoring of Joker). This year Lucy is starting a new venture with the launch of her own music publishing company, Bright Notion Music.Lucy has music supervised some of the most critically-acclaimed British films of recent years: Samantha Morton's directorial debut The Unloved, Lynne Ramsey's The Swimmer, John Maclean's Slow West, Justin Kurzel's Assassin's Creed, Michael Almereyda's Marjorie Prime and Sean Durkin's The Nest starring Jude Law and Carrie Coon which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2020. Her work in television is equally renowned including Southcliffe, McMafia and Shane Meadows's This is England ‘90 and The Virtues. She is currently working on TV drama Little Birds for Sky Atlantic and LIFE for BBC One (jointly with Catherine Grieves). We talk about her journey into music supervision, what inspires her, the role of a composer within the context of film, the under-representation of female composers in the film industry, and the lessons learned along the way.Guest: Lucy BrightTitle: The artist is the film director and you are there to serve their visionInstagram: @lightlightbrightAlbums/Artists on playlist: Bob Dylan Oh Mercy, Leonard Cohen, Memories from the album Death of a Ladies' Man and Rob Simonsen ReveriesTo support the podcast click here See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

First, Michael Almereyda's 2000 version of Hamlet set in the world of New York finance starring Ethan Hawke. They'll transition to another 'bored rich kid' story with My Own Private Idaho: Gus Van Sant's 1991 road trip, street hustler romance that heavily incorporates elements of Henry IV, with Keanu Reeves as Scott, the contemporary analogue of Prince Hal. Will they talk way too much about Keanu Reeves? Obviously, it's 2019, the year of Keanu! But they'll also get into what things are worth carrying over directly from Shakespeare in an atypical adaptation, and which things become far too labored in their translation.
