En tipt Anke een verrassend integere true crime-docuserie op Netflix: Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter (13:30). This week's BFG podcast is a feast for the brain. Michael Washburn engages host Neal Pollack in a discussion of Sandra Newman's provocative and "very raunchy" novel 'Julia', a brilliant and extended riff of the world of Oceania in George Orwell's '1984.' Neal somewhat wondered what Newman was getting at, but Michael found her extension of the world extremely compelling and disturbing, a fresh warning about the dangers of totalitarianism. BFG book club recommends it!'Napoleon' has finally arrived in theaters, and Stephen Garrett stops by to talk with Neal about the ultimate dad movie. They both really enjoyed the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo and some of Joaquin Phoenix's campier lines. Stephen would like to see more of the charisma that made Bonaparte so beloved to the French people. Totally fair. But Neal will brook no criticism of Ridley Scott's Napoleon, the movie of the year if not even close to the best movie of the year.'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,' the Hunger Games prequel, took both Neal and contributor Sara Stewart by surprise. They both enjoyed the gritty early days of Panem vibe, both appreciated the good-quality country-style music, and found the performances persuasive. There's a reason it's a hit, though the love story is unconvincing and the act 3 coda goes on a bit too long. Still very much worth watching, just as the show is very much worth listening to.Enjoy!
Liz & Darian review the return to The Hunger Games franchise with the latest installment, 'The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes' which takes place 64 years before Jennifer Lawrence graced the screen as Katniss Everdeen in 'The Hunger Games.' The pair discuss Tom Blyth's portrayal of Coriolanus Snow, Rachel Zegler's role as Lucy Gray Baird and how the film's bloated runtime and tonal confusion in Act 3 might've hurt the film tremendously. Everyone's been talking about it — and now we can too! The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes kicked off the summer in YA books. The reception has been mostly mixed throughout the community, but we were surprised to find that most of us enjoyed it in some way! While it's certainly very different from the previous Hunger Games books, the story of Coriolanus Snow has a lot to offer and teach us. As part of our initiative to do more, we're donating 100% of our ad earnings from the month of June to the Trevor Project. We donated 100% of our earnings from May to Black Lives Matter. Learn more about why here. In this episode: Is The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes too long of a book? What kind of origin story did Suzanne Collins give us? We look at nature vs. nurture. Does Coriolanus ever really love Lucy Gray? It's hard to understate Lucy Gray's impact. Are the games better in the earlier days or during Katniss' days? Do all the connections to the Hunger Games trilogy ruin the original books? Sejanus definitely couldn't have survived during the age of Katniss. In an occasional series entitled 'The Ballad of Bedfordshire' Jon Bickley tells the story of the Luton Peace Day riots in words and music. This is a re-recorded and expanded version of a radio show first broadcast in July 2019 with additional material to paint the wider picture. Around the original core songs are others recalling the patriotic fervour to enlist in 1914 and the sense of real worth and status it gave the Tommies. The harsh realities that hit home on arrival at the front soon put paid to that. At the end of the war the promise to build a land fit for heroes failed to materialise. Luton ex-servicemen unhappy with unemployment and other grievances, particularly the high handed attitude of Mayor Henry Impey, took matters into their own hands and burned down the Town Hall. To mark the centenary Jon performs his own original songs about the events that occurred in Luton town centre between 19th - 21st July 1919. The narrative is finally brought up to date with a reflection on the aftermath of any conflict, be it a declared war between nations or the ongoing 'war on terror.' All songs written and performed by Jon Bickley & friends except ** MARCH TO WAR 1 - John McCormack - Keep the Home Fires Burning ** 2 - We're the Tommies You've Heard About 3 - To Kill the Devil (Neil Stanton - violin) 4 - We're All Going Home in the MorningRETURN 5 - Keep Your Heads Down (Bob Templeman - guitar, Annette Burrows - vocal) 6 - Shiny Buttons and Badges (Neil Stanton - violin)ANGER 7 - Treat Him Like a Dog (Neil Stanton - violin) 8 - We Will March (Mandy & Lizzy Hardingham - backing vocals, John Maw - mandola) 9 - Mayor Henry Impey 10 - Luton Town (Neil Stanton - violin)REFLECTION 11 - If Justice Had Wings (Mandy & Lizzy Hardingham - backing vocals) 12 - Choose Peace (Mandy & Lizzy Hardingham - backing vocals) 13 - Poppies for Sale 'Keep the Home-Fires Burning' written by Ivor Novello, performed by John McCormack

Episode #30 of the Ground Shots Podcast features a conversation with Laura Pendell, writer, artist and partner of the late ethnobotanist Dale Pendell. Laura and I got together after several meet-ups last year to record this conversation in their shared library and studio in Penn Valley, California this past summer. We intended to record a conversation that celebrates Dale's work, perspective and unique way in the world. Dale Pendell was most known for his books in the Pharmako trilogy (Pharmako/Dynamis, Pharmako/Poeia, Pharmako/Gnosis) a project that explored the use, history, pharmacology, sociology, personal experience, chemistry, and alchemy of most plants or substances considered 'psychoactive.' He also wrote novels and poetry. Dale had a unique writing style that mixed his own experience, research, poetry and old folklore. I'm grateful Laura took the time to record a conversation with me about Dale's work and way in the world. I think that fans of Dale's work will gain some unique insight from out conversation here. In this conversation with Laura, we talk about: Dale's nature of exploration and the way he navigated his interests the Pharmako trilogy and their demonstration of Dale's experimental nature with plants Dale's ability to combine different facets of things together in his work Dale's unfinished and unpublished works including a book on his prison experiences in Mexico and the U.S., and a collected writings book that is in the works Dale and Laura's camp project called 'Oracular Madness' during the early years of Burning Man and Dale's book 'Inspired Madness' as a reflection on the camp Dale's book 'The Great Bay: Chronicles of the Collapse' and how it is a unique view of a possible future scenario and it's telling stories of our modern times Dale's talks on 'Horizon Anarchism' at Burning Man Dale's artist book 'The Gold Dust Wilderness' one of the first works he published and silkscreened and based on his experience living off grid on a mining claim in Trinity county, Ca in the 1970's. This book was the genesis of his unique writing style of information, imagination and poetry (it's so cool to see this book in person!) Dale's herbal root beer, elixir, and absinthe projects Laura's connection to poetry and absinthe Dale and Laura's connection to Zen Buddhism Laura reads some of Dale's poetry including 'The Ballad of the Hungry Ghosts,' 'Medicine,' and 'Stonecrop' the herbarium collection that Dale compiled over decades in Nevada county, Ca and beyond (over 1000 specimens) Dale's relationship with the psychedelic and drug database Erowid Links: Dale Pendell's blog: http://dalependell.com/ Pharmako trilogy by Dale Pendell: https://www.amazon.com/gp/bookseries/B00CKD4JLQ/ref=dp_st_1556438052 Dale's lecture on ‘Horizon Anarchism' at the 2006 Burning Man: https://soundcloud.com/lozo-382782666/055-dale-pendell-horizon-anarchism Erowid resource library (There's also a physical location where the Erowid library is located, near Auburn, CA) https://erowid.org/ Apache Stronghold Oak Flat: http://apache-stronghold.com/index.html Signal Fire: http://www.signalfirearts.org Support the podcast on Patreon to contribute to our grassroots self-funding of this project. In the first episode of an occasional series entitled 'The Ballad of Bedfordshire' Jon Bickley tells the story of the Luton Peace Day riots in words and music. At the end of the First World War in November 1918 Prime Minister Lloyd George promised his government would 'make Britain a fit country for heroes to live in.' Sadly this failed to materialise. By Summer 1919 Luton ex-servicemen were unhappy with unemployment and other grievances, in particular the high handed attitude of Henry Impey the Mayor of Luton. A single incident lit the fuse and the disenfranchised men took matters into their own hands. In the ensuing riots Luton Town Hall was burned down in a fervour of protest. This week on TIFF Long Take, Geoff chats with actor and screenwriter Zoe Kazan. It’s been a busy few months for Kazan. In October, the feature film 'Wildlife' — which she co-wrote with her partner, Paul Dano, and which had its Canadian premiere at TIFF in September — opened to great critical acclaim. Most recently, she starred in “The Gal Who Got Rattled,” one of six vignettes that make up the Coen Brothers’ anthology film 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs', now playing at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Kazan talks about the films that made her want to pursue a career in show business, how her work as an actor has influenced her screenplays, and the best piece of advice she ever received about writing. She also talks about her all-time favourite film scripts, how her role in 'Meek’s Cutoff '(2010) prepared her for 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs', and what she learned working with the Coen Brothers.
On this weeks episode, Carolyn talks with Carter Burwell, the Composer on 'The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs'. Carter talks about returning to work on another Coen brothers movie, and how he created the different musical themes for all of the 7 different parts of the film. The soundtrack to the film is available on Milan records. Hosted by: Carolyn Giardina Produced by: Matthew Whitehurst
We take you on a merry tour of the magical land of Peckham in South London, courtesy of Muriel Spark and her superb (and remarkably short) novel 'The Ballad of Peckham Rye'. We start at the address in Camberwell where Muriel Spark lived and wrote the book. We then follow a number of lost - or perhaps completely mythical - pathways down the old Surrey Canal, past a number of long-gone pubs in Peckham & Nunhead, before emerging on to the ancient Rye - where Boadicea may or may not have popped her clogs. Tim gets very excited about the number of pubs you get to visit by following this book - some of them still there and serving pints! Our mission at the 'CuSpec' Book Club is to road test works of fiction that appear to be curiously specific about dates and locations. We go to the places mentioned and see if descriptions are accurate, journey times credible, dates and days all in order. Along the way, we learn things about the book and its author. For early access to ad-free episodes - and exclusive access to all our show notes, maps, photos and videos - please support us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/curiouslyspecific. Today's Guest: Red Peters, comedian, singer, Red Peters Presents The Summer Song Sizzler, Howard Stern Show regular Order Red Peters Presents The Summer Song Sizzler, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the CD cover above! Red Peters’ dulcet tones have undoubted lulled you into listening to music that your mother would likely not approve of. The singer-songwriter takes standard, common melodies and gives them a hysterically filthy twist that makes you go, “What the f---?” And if you’ve never heard Peters’ work, let me be the first to introduce you to a few samples, including “You Promised Me the Moon (But I Prefer Uranus)." RED PETERS audio excerpt: "I did a phoner with Howard. I was on for 40 minutes. He played a little snatch—so to speak--of each song. When he played 'The Ballad of a Dog Named Stains,' Howard just loved it. He flipped out. Within several months, I was in his studio singing it live. We became friends from that point on. He injected quite a bit of life into the Red Peters Project, that's for sure." Red Peters came to the attention of America’s preeminent radio personality, Howard Stern, not long before Stern made the move from CBS to Sirius Satellite Radio five years ago. Stern created a place for him on his Howard 101 channel, where you can often hear Peters playing his own tunes and dirty music from a variety of other composers and performers. His latest CD, “Red Peters Presents: Summer Song Sizzler,” is available on iTunes and is full of charming ditties such as “Vagina” by Pig Vomit and “There’s a Homo in the Bunkhouse” by Bob Garrett’s “Banned.” A little later, I’ll play “The Sex Song” by TastiSkank. In this episode of Tell Me About Your Song, Tracie Potochnik talks about her song 'The Ballad of Harvey the Elf', which can be found on her band Cardboard Ox's free album 'A Cardboard Ox Christmas'. This episode also includes excerpts from Tracie's conversations with her delightful parents, Ed and Judy Potochnik. There were some audio problems during my interview with Tracie, which I didn't catch until after it was too late to rerecord. I apologize for the resulting audio quality of this episode (but I think it's still fun to listen to, and I hope you do too!). Featuring an interview with director Rebecca MillerIn this episode of the Curzon Film Podcast, host Jenna and guest Dani discuss Rebecca Miller's ('Personal Velocity', 'The Ballad of Jack and Rose') new film 'Maggie's Plan'. A screwball comedy starring Greta Gerwig in the lead, as a young woman determined to raise a new baby in New York, whilst trying to balance an affair with an aspiring academic writer (Ethan Hawke), and dealing with Julianne Moore as his flamboyant wife Georgette. As well as the usual film discussion, we also sat down with Rebecca Miller to talk about the film, its influences, and assembling such an incredible cast. Hosted on Acast. The writing of Carson McCullers has perhaps never been as popular or acclaimed as that of contemporaries such as Harper Lee and Tennessee Williams, but nonetheless she remains one of the most remarkable and individual writers to come out of twentieth century America. She only wrote a few works, in large part because rheumatic fever left her paralysed in her left arm, and she was beset by ill health and alcoholism for many of her fifty years. Her writing style was enormously sensuous, filled with the heat, sounds and smells of the American south, and the characters who populated books like 'The Ballad of the Sad Cafe', 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter' and 'A Member of the Wedding' were most commonly troubled misfits. Her personal life was similarly idiosyncratic - the man she married twice committed suicide having tried to get her to do the same - though it is her very particular writing style, with a strong musicality drawn from the years she spent training as a classical pianist, that has made many of her fans so vociferous in their attachment to her. Jarvis Cocker hears from a number of them, including academic Carlos Dews, author Laura Barton and musician Suzanne Vega, who has not only written and starred in three versions of a play about Carson, but often feels herself to be in conversation with her spirit. Jarvis explains his own personal devotion, explaining how Carson's ability to bypass the brain and connect straight to the heart is what makes her such an important figure to him.
This episode focuses on the catastrophic land and habitat loss that has occurred in coastal Louisiana. As a 'Folk' musician, I write about the issues of the age. As a native South Louisianian, there isn't a more pressing issue to write about. This podcast features an interview with Dr. Kerry St. Pe', reknown expert on Louisiana Wetlands and retired director of the BTNEP (Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program). The songs shared herein; 'A Little Less Louisiana'(to call home), 'The Ballad of Hurricane Isaac (2012)', and 'Those Lands' are meant to communicate the perilous state of our vanishing coast. Also featured, Ryan Harris, Baton Rouge recording artist singing his song 'The River's Rolling High', on which I was honored and privileged to play dobro alongside fiddler, Robert 'Doc' Chaney when we recorded it at the Songwriter's Retreat in Tickfaw, LA last weekend. As art, the songs bring some attention to the problem. To fully comprehend the multi-headed serpent that this problem emulates, there are many resources online such as http://www.btnep.org/ and http://www.voiceofthewetlands.org/ and a particularly informative video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJrI3xP7WO0.
This week, all four hosts are back as they discuss the possibility of Green Lantern in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Tim Burton's Dumbo, TV series that were canceled before their time, Dan Aykroyd's opinions on the new Ghostbusters film AND MORE! This week, Josh and Cody discuss the life and legacy of Leonard Nimoy, as well as some Spider-Man Sony/Marvel Studios news, the possible Masters of the Universe film, the game Heroes & Generals, EA closing Maxis, wicked drum circles AND MORE! The song this week is 'The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins' by Leonard Nimoy.
