Riding Shotgun With Charlie #222 Ed Monk Last Resort Firearm Training   Ed Monk is a name I've heard several times over the years. In October 2024, Matt Mallory and I did a live show with Ed and I was able to talk him into letting me drive him around Boston. Last fall, I had a chance to film a show with him before he was presenting at a conference for law enforcement officers. His area of expertise is analyzing the aftermath of school shootings. As a teacher for over 3 decades, this is a topic that hits home for me.    Monk grew up in Arkansas with a family with firearms, mostly for hunting. Around 1999, he connected with Jim Higginbothom who taught Ed that there's a whole new world with defensive gun fighting and shooting. His training resume is beyond impressive. He's taken classes at Front Sight, Tactical Defense Institute, and Rangemaster with Tom Givens. He also had training in the Army, where he spent 24 years. He's been teaching for about 15 years. His brother built a range on the family property. Their range went from 3 pistol bays, to another bay that was covered from the weather. Then his brother became “terminally ill with long range shooting” and added a 480 yard range, too. And they have a 50 yard range that holds 15 people.    Just after finishing his time in Iraq, he got a job teaching at a high school, where he taught for 4 years. Going from a profession that only dealt with deadly violence to one that avoids it was a difficult change. During some professional development, he realized that the school was prepared and didn't know how to prepare for a school shooter. The school's plan was to gather all the students and put them in one area, thus making it easier for the shooter to hit more targets. With the school's staff not knowing how to prepare and deal with violence, they thought this was an acceptable answer. But Ed knew it wasn't. That put him on the path to study school shootings and how they're committed.    Ed has done the work and crunched the numbers. He's realized that it becomes a math problem of sorts. The longer it takes to get someone who is prepared and ready to deal with the shooter, the higher the victim count goes. Locking the doors and hiding under the desks works well every day the shooter doesn't show up.    There are things that can be done. He suggests things like painting the hallways in different colors. Instead of having the art wing, the police can go to the green hallway. Elementary schools can also put barriers up on the playgrounds, ones that can be filled with sand or water. They can even have ballistic tables in the lunchroom. All things that would slow someone down who is committing a heinous crime.    When it comes to stopping a shooter, the time it takes to respond matters, and relates to the number of victims. Ed says that schools don't need everyone to carry but they need some people who are willing to step up and stop the carnage. But that person also needs to be at the school, where the action is taking place. Not several minutes away or even on the other side of the school.    We have a treat in this episode. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #173 Jose Morales Philly Firearms Academy   My familiarity with Jose Morales' name started years ago. I've always been a fan of the Gun For Hire Radio podcast. The main host, Anthony Colandro (RSWC #003 & 025), would often bring up Jose's name as someone helping with production of the show. Last summer, I was in Detroit for Rick Ector's (RSWC #032) Ladies Event. As I was introducing myself to the other instructors, I met Jose. I kept running through my mind “how do I know his name?” Then it hit me! Gun For Hire Radio! So I went back up and said I knew his name and finally put it together. Like it is meeting with gun people, it felt like old home week.    Jose grew up in New York City and said his mother had a gun. At the time he didn't know how difficult it was to get a gun as times were different. He spent 3 years serving in the Army and ended up in Philadelphia. He's had a few careers, of course, doing non-gun stuff, until he decided that after taking several friends shooting, maybe it was time to become an instructor. He traveled to western Pennsylvania to take an instructor course.    He's done a ton of training since then. He's an NRA and USCCA Training Counselor in several disciplines, so he's training the trainers. I don't like saying someone is a “training junkie”, but he's trained with many of the best, including Massad Ayoob (RSWC #045), Rob Pincus (RSWC #063), and Tom Givens, among others. Therefore he offers courses at various levels to his clients.   Just like other businesses, Jose had a lot of growing to do. He talks about going from range to range with students and trying to find students. As many people have found out, there are ranges they don't want you to bring in your clients or they want half of what you charge to use the range. So, Jose ended up needing a dedicated place for training, which ended up being across the street from where the Philadelphia police issued permits! It was hard to get people to come in. He was near the old Colosimo's Gun Center which had a range he was using. We also cover how often instructors are very territorial with their areas.    We get into some interesting points about people and their training. While it shouldn't be a government mandate to require training to get a carry permit, anyone who carries definitely needs training in things like how to carry concealed, when you can use lethal force, and absolutely when you cannot use lethal force. People also need education on what to do in a situation after you've used lethal force.    Jose has a great line saying “everyone wants remedial education not preventative education”, meaning that people take classes after they have an eye opening incident. He will get calls from people saying things like they need an “NRA Basic Pistol or the equivalent” which is code for “I'm reading a paper given to me by the police and lost my license”. We had a really good discussion about this topic. The discussion also led to bringing up the terms that the antis use that we have “adopted” and we fall right in line and use them as if they are legit terms. Yes, words have meanings.    Jose also shares what it was like to bring an NRA course into a hospital where he had some connections and tried to train and educate people that just because the course says “NRA” doesn't mean the course is evil and preaching an agenda. It's all education and people who are unfamiliar or new to firearms may not want to hear about the NRA due to the bad press the NRA gets from the media.    I'm telling you, gun people are the best people! I met Jose at his home in Philly, he offered me some Tastykakes, and we talked like we were old friends. Riding Shotgun With Charlie#114Ben DeWaltOnSight Firearms Training   One of my friends, Mark, asked if I was going to be taking a course called Defense Pistol - Accuracy and Accountability with Ben DeWalt of OnSight Firearms Training. I decided that I was going to do some training for myself this year and said only if Mark was taking the class, too.  He also told me that Ben would be a great person to have in the passenger's seat.  So I signed up for the class and messaged Ben about being on the show!   Having grown up around firearms and shooting .22 rifles as a kid, he was carrying Guns & Ammo magazine in 3rd grade. About the time he was in 8th grade, he got into martial arts and karate. After high school, he found himself DJ'ing, doing security, and managing night clubs in NYC. That led to being a booking agent and calling clubs to set up tours for bands. Which came in handy years later as a firearm instructor.    Growing tired of the musicians and rockstar attitudes, he decided to make a career shift and decided to become a firearm instructor.  In the meantime, he was working at ranges as an instructor and range safety officer. After working with another instructor, he learned he didn't know everything and took more classes. He took a position as a customer service/ product service test firing repair guns.  He was gunsmithing 1911s at Kimber and testing the repair firearms.    Meanwhile, Ben was also teaching courses and taking more courses.  After consulting with his wife, they decided it would be better to focus on teaching courses and making a go of it as a full time, self employed instructor. Ben and his wife, who is also an instructor, took as many classes from as many teachers as possible, notably the Tom Givens' Rangemaster and SIG Academy.  They've done over 75 classes at SIG Academy. And he scored 100's on all the Rangemaster qualifications.    Knowing that with firearms courses, there's a possibility of injuries, they both became certified to teach some medical and trauma courses, which they also offer. Since many of us carry firearms and knives to protect ourselves, we should also have some medical trauma and first aid training. And maybe even carry some of that gear around with us and in our cars.    One of the things I really enjoyed with talking to Ben is that he's got an ongoing desire to educate himself and improve himself.  It's not just his shooting skills, but it's his teaching skills as well. He likes to retake classes to see what he can pick up from new instructors.  And he encourages his clients to take classes from other instructors as well.    Personally, I enjoyed listening to his story about getting out from working for someone else and going it on his own.  And hearing how he took his skills and knowledge from his DJ'ing days and applied them to his gun instructor days. I'm sure you'll enjoy that as well.   We did take a few minutes off to get a selfie at the Old North Bridge in Concord, MA, in front of the Massachusetts Minuteman statue.  The statue is a farmer taking up his rifle and leaving his plough behind to help start a new nation.      Favorite quotes   “Sounds like a cool job on the outside.
