Riding Shotgun With Charlie #222 Ed Monk Last Resort Firearm Training Ed Monk is a name I've heard several times over the years. In October 2024, Matt Mallory and I did a live show with Ed and I was able to talk him into letting me drive him around Boston. Last fall, I had a chance to film a show with him before he was presenting at a conference for law enforcement officers. His area of expertise is analyzing the aftermath of school shootings. As a teacher for over 3 decades, this is a topic that hits home for me. Monk grew up in Arkansas with a family with firearms, mostly for hunting. Around 1999, he connected with Jim Higginbothom who taught Ed that there's a whole new world with defensive gun fighting and shooting. His training resume is beyond impressive. He's taken classes at Front Sight, Tactical Defense Institute, and Rangemaster with Tom Givens. He also had training in the Army, where he spent 24 years. He's been teaching for about 15 years. His brother built a range on the family property. Their range went from 3 pistol bays, to another bay that was covered from the weather. Then his brother became “terminally ill with long range shooting” and added a 480 yard range, too. And they have a 50 yard range that holds 15 people. Just after finishing his time in Iraq, he got a job teaching at a high school, where he taught for 4 years. Going from a profession that only dealt with deadly violence to one that avoids it was a difficult change. During some professional development, he realized that the school was prepared and didn't know how to prepare for a school shooter. The school's plan was to gather all the students and put them in one area, thus making it easier for the shooter to hit more targets. With the school's staff not knowing how to prepare and deal with violence, they thought this was an acceptable answer. But Ed knew it wasn't. That put him on the path to study school shootings and how they're committed. Ed has done the work and crunched the numbers. He's realized that it becomes a math problem of sorts. The longer it takes to get someone who is prepared and ready to deal with the shooter, the higher the victim count goes. Locking the doors and hiding under the desks works well every day the shooter doesn't show up. There are things that can be done. He suggests things like painting the hallways in different colors. Instead of having the art wing, the police can go to the green hallway. Elementary schools can also put barriers up on the playgrounds, ones that can be filled with sand or water. They can even have ballistic tables in the lunchroom. All things that would slow someone down who is committing a heinous crime. When it comes to stopping a shooter, the time it takes to respond matters, and relates to the number of victims. Ed says that schools don't need everyone to carry but they need some people who are willing to step up and stop the carnage. But that person also needs to be at the school, where the action is taking place. Not several minutes away or even on the other side of the school. We have a treat in this episode. One of my friends, Mark Lindblom, aka The Bay State King of GLOCKS (BSKOG as we call him), calls in with a question for Ed.Mark has been talking to me about Ed and several other trainers. And he turned me on to Ed's series on the Active Self Protection app. Ed offers classes and seminars all around the country. He can bring his program to your school as well. You can find where he's teaching and presenting on his Facebook page. If you can get him to come to your district, that would be very beneficial to your community. He also offers training for churches. In August 2025, at his home range, he is hosting Hero's Conference. You'll be able to hear from heroes who stopped active shooters. People like Jack Wilson, Greg Stevens, Stephen Willeford, and Pastor David George. Favorite quotes: “Then plopped into a public teaching profession, where we don't discuss violence at all.” “The locking the doors and hiding under the desks works very, very well the shooter doesn't show up.” “They like putting stuff in the plans that's easy to type, that's easy to drill, that's not controversial, that doesn't trigger anybody.” “The longer we let him shoot us, the more of us get shot. Or the sooner we stop him, the fewer of us get shot.” Last Resort Firearms Training https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057584853533 Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. It could have been a North Texas massacre with up to 150 victims, if not for a Garland Police officer who became the first lawman in the country to engage ISIS-inspired terrorists on Texas soil.Greg Stevens, now 70, has lived for seven years on terrorist hit lists and shadowed by national intelligence. He joins the Blue Grit Podcast team to discuss the incident. Stevens has also received the nation's highest law enforcement honor and is revealing himself publicly for the first time."They kept me out of the media and kept my name and so on anonymous for a long, long time," said Stevens. Seven years ago, on May 3, 2015, he singlehandedly stopped an ISIS terrorist attack as a Garland Police officer.Stevens was one of 40 officers assigned to a security detail at the Curtis Culwell Center that Sunday in Garland. It's where a conservative group hosted a Muhammad cartoon contest that authorities knew would likely anger some Muslims."This had a lot of potential for bad things happening," said Stevens.Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi drove from Arizona with guns on an ISIS inspired mission authorities say to kill the 150 people attending the event."This little black car came from my left as I'm facing out on the street," said Stevens.Stevens believes the two attackers chose to pull up at the entrance monitored by him and an unarmed Garland ISD officer."They probably looked over there, look there are two guys, one of them is not even armed, and the other guy is 100 years old how hard can this be? The next thing I see is somebody dressed in all black stepping out of the car and the barrel of a rifle coming up in my direction."Stevens fired 14 rounds from a handgun while the two men with rifles fired 35, one of them, striking unarmed security guard Bruce Joiner in the leg.Within seconds, the veteran officer took down the gunmen from more than 30 feet away."This whole event probably didn't take no more than 10 and probably 15 seconds," said Stevens. "I'm a pretty good shooter. I'm not a great shooter. My training kicked in. I wasn't formulating a plan."Restorers: A Water Street PodcastOver these short episodes, we will be introducing you to the heroes who are working in...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showemail us at- bluegrit@tmpa.org

On this episode of the official holiday podcast for people who organize meetings with 3 different versions of themselves, all of whom are action heroes, we’re skating on thin ice back to 1993 for a very educational trip to Bluffington to rewatch “Doug’s Christmas Story.”Admittedly not a very festive episode late in the first official Nicktoon’s run on Nickelodeon, at one point I forgot this was a Christmas episode I was watching for my podcast. On This Episode:Mike Westfall (@fallwestmike), bitter ousted politician with a microphone and a self-help line.Greg Stevens (@pop_arena), weaponized dessert maker and creator of YouTube’s Pop Arena, home to Nick Knacks, a show-by-show history of Nickelodeon; plus reviews of Animorphs, Goosebumps, and Doctor Who books.Topics and Tangents:Disney’s Doug was OK, y’all.“Doug” creator Jim Jinkins worked on Nickelodeon’s first show, “Pinwheel.”Early versions of Doug appeared on a bumper for USA Network and a PSA for Florida Grapefruit Juice. (Bonus: The grapefruit juice one features Lorenzo Music, the voice of Garfield.)The ol’ Danger: Thin Ice trope, the Chekhov’s gun of frozen ponds.Doug’s usual antagonist, Roger Klotz, is completely absent from this episode.Alice Playten (Beebe) was in the 1975 Maurice Sendak TV special, “Really Rosie” as Alligator.Constance Shulman (Patti) in a scene from “Weekend at Bernie’s II.” She’s also Yoga Jones from “Orange Is the New Black.”Every car in Bluffington looks like Homer Simpson designed it.Greg Lee from “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” voices recently ousted former mayor Bob White, and boy, am I glad we recorded this after election week.“The Phred on Your Head Show,” in example.Mr. Dink’s last name is apparently an acronym for “Double Income, No Kids,” a joke that went over every 11-year-old’s head. How much of what we see is what really happened, and how much is Doug embellishing in his journal? The first and only time Doug’s imaginary alter-egos Race Canyon, Quailman, and Smash Adams appeared on screen at the same time.Don’t wrap pets in boxes! Why have we been following Doug’s boring, normal kid adventures, when Porkchop’s apparently offscreen building houses and helping car crash victims walk again? The topper on the Funnies’ Christmas tree is Mr. Dink’s face.Nick Knacks Episodes on Other Nickelodeon Shows Mentioned:PinwheelBy the WayHocus FocusChristmas in TattertownLivewireYou Can’t Do That on TelevisionBelle and SebastianA Rugrats ChanukahSpartakus and the Sun Beneath the SeaDouble DarePrevious Podcast Episodes Mentioned:A Rugrats Chanukah (Season 1, Episode 6)Christmas in Tattertown (Season 3, Episode 10)Deck the Halls With Wacky Walls (Season 4, Episode 5)Commercial Break:Nicktoons Pizza Hut Kids’ Pizza Pack Commercial, 1991Podcast Promos:SequelQuest, exploring the unexplored possibilities hidden within our favorite film franchises.TGI Podcast, covering the best holiday episodes of TGIF classics.“Doug” and “Doug’s Christmas Story” © 1993 Jumbo Pictures, Inc.The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Instagram @adventcalendarhouse, and on Twitter @adventcalhouse.

This is the episode with only great news! Sound impossible? Wrong. First, we take some glee in the fact we beat a billionaire's ass in court. Sahara's baseless lawsuit against us was dismissed and we're in the mood to celebrate. We're also celebrating the opening of Circa Las Vegas. We snagged interviews with co-owners Derek and Greg Stevens, and also chatted with YESCO, the company that renovated Vegas Vickie.

Greg Leon was born on May 19, 1958 and grew up in Glendale, CA, a foothills community of Los Angeles, and immediately made an impact on the blossoming live hard rock scene of Hollywood's Sunset Strip in the late 1970s. Primarily playing guitar and handling vocals, the acts that he fronted were Suite 19, with future Great White/Dokken drummer Gary Holland and then future Motley Crue drummer, Tommy Lee and the Greg Leon Invasion, with bassist Joey Vera (later of Armored Saint, Fate's Warning and Anthrax) and drummer Carl Elizondo (later of Jag Wire, and playing under the stage name Carl James). The Invasion would release the "Every Time" b/w "Stay With Me Tonite" 7" single with Vera on bass who was fired when it was discovered by Leon that he had been moonlighting with Armored Saint. Vera's replacement, Chuck Stevenson and Elizondo played with Leon on the Greg Leon Invasion picture disc released by Azra/R2R in 1983. He took the place of Randy Rhoads in Quiet Riot, and as the pre-George Lynch guitarist in Dokken. (Don Dokken has since made the group's first EP, which graces Leon on the cover, available for download to the public). During this period Leon also had a considerable local reputation as a guitar teacher, working at Rhoads' mother's guitar studio in Burbank. Leon had several incarnations of the Invasion and played with various LA acts after his exciting early days. Leon also had a brief time with Greenworld Records' Midwestern act Vyper, while at the same time gathering a name for himself as a guitar amp modifying specialist. In the late 1990s, Leon fronted a band called Wishing Well which also featured Survivor drummer Marc Droubay and English-born bassist Stuart Brooks (ex-Black Cat Bones, Leaf Hound, The Pretty Things). The trio released their eponymous debut album in 1997. By 2003 Leon was back on the LA club scene under the name The Greg Leon Invasion, featuring Boston-born bassist George Roelke and Ohio-born drummer Greg Stevens, taking the group for a European festival tour in 2005 on the strength of new recordings, coupled with the myth related to his name. The line-up also performed July 13, 2007 at the annual 1980s-era hard rock music festival, Rocklahoma. In 2008 former White Lion drummer Greg D'Angelo replaced Stevens in the band. Leon is married with Canadian singer Suza Wood and in 2005 he produced her first album titled Sweet Freedom.
Todd Schnick and Mike Wood chat with researchers Greg Stevens and Madison Beard about how companies can use data to make better business decisions. Greg is Analytics Manager at Workhuman Analytics and Research Institute. His research focuses on converting data into insights that managers and HR leaders can use to make organizations better. Madison is the Lead Data Scientist and Researcher at Cisco. The Analytics and Research team she leads studies what makes teams and leaders great at Cisco and leverages data to answer relevant, simple and actionable business problems for the company. An Interdisciplinary ApproachMadison’s team members have various skill sets. The interdisciplinary approach combines quantitative and qualitative data to not only analyze what’s going on at Cisco, but also how people feel and what they are saying about it. Madison points out that her team owns just one piece of the data puzzle; they combine data sources from many stakeholders within the company to answer business problems such as attrition. Start With WhyGreg says that finding early stakeholder engagement is key. It’s important to know what is the burning question you want to answer with the data, because it’s tempting to want to look at everything. Start with the Why and let that guide your mobilization of resources, Greg advises. Madison adds that you need to make good decisions about how to spend finite resources to make the biggest impact. Also, make sure that you have the sources of data to answer the questions you have. Going FishingOne of the two modes of research Greg and his team uses is Hypothesis Generation. They don’t know which question to ask, but they know which area to look in. This exploratory nature of analytics leads to flashes of insight, he says. Madison calls this type of research going fishing. She says you go fishing expecting a salmon, and sometimes you catch a flounder. The questions you ask when you find these happy surprises may lead you to present your insights in different ways and to a different audience. Leveraging the DataEach company is at a different point in how they use analytics. Some companies like Cisco have their own advanced infrastructure and teams in place, while other companies partner with other businesses to carry out the analytics function. Greg applauds the democratization of data: it’s easier than ever for any company to have access to resources. Madison says that leveraging data starts with data fluency. You must understand the difference between good and bad data, the business context as well as how to support leaders in making the right decisions using the data. It’s possible to leverage data even in small companies. There is a lot of insight in small data, Greg says. Just start where you are: your resources will grow as you prove the value of analytics.ResourcesNeuroleadership InstituteMadison Beard on LinkedInGreg Stevens: Workhuman Analytics and Research Institute | LinkedIn
Bob Harding and Teri Seaton are two people who might not seem like they have much in common. Bob works as a bank executive and, with his wife Shannon, is raising three young kids on a 5-acre hobby farm in Stafford, Oregon just east of Tualatin. They have 30 chickens, 3 goats, a cat, and a dog. Teri Seaton lives in North Portland with her husband, Greg Stevens. Not a single chicken, goat, dog or cat can be found in her house. But though she has no children of her own, she does spend a lot of time with them. Teri, you see, is a Head Start preschool teacher. And Bob, you might be surprised to learn…was once a Head Start student. Head Start is a federal program that serves low income children and families. Both Oregon and Washington offer the program, but neither state receives enough funding to serve all children and families who are income eligible, so they supplement the federal program with state dollars. Child advocates, education, and political leaders have called for increasing access to early learning and early childhood programs. That's alongside a growing body of research on the long-term benefits of early care and education programs in general. With that backdrop in mind, we wanted to hear directly from those who have benefited from the program and those who work directly with children and families every day.

He tells the story of the events that occurred on March 3rd, 2015 when he prevented two terrorists from entering the Culwell Center in Garland, He talks about the importance of training and how it can help when the moment chooses you.
In part 2, Greg Stevens discusses how he dealt with 40 years of being a patrol officer, addressing trauma, and the importance of having a strong support network.

If you've ever wondered what it was like to be in a gunfight, you won't want to miss this show.
Communion has always been central to the new covenant and those living under the grace and salvation of Jesus, but do we reverence it as much as Jesus did? Do we prize it the way he did?
Can you be religious and an atheist? Can you disbelieve in spirits while also defending your religious freedom? We live in a culture that has hard boundaries between these territories, and they are enforced by all sides, atheists and religious alike. The assumption that religion = theism is deeply imbedded in our culture, but it might be blocking progress to a more rational, reasonable, and humane religion. Greg Stevens of the Satanic Temple joins me to discuss non-theistic religion, the activism of The Satanic Temple, the importance of religion for atheists, and to answer questions from my listeners about The Satanic Temple. Among the questions asked are: - Why Satan? Why, of all the deities to worship, do you choose Satan? - Why degrade Christian symbols that so many Christians deem holy? Isn’t that counter-productive? - How has the election of Donald Trump effected the Temple? - Is Satanism purely reactionary to Christianity? What would Satanism look like in other cultures?
In this episode of Sacred Tension, I continue my conversation with Satanic Temple spokesperson Greg Stevens about the core seven tenets of the Satanic Temple. Along the way, we talk about freedom of speech, bodily autonomy, the significance of how we treat our neighbor, the importance of science in shaping belief, and much more.
Scott Braddock breaks down a Texas lawmaker's call for a special session to address school shootings. Lubbock Police Chief Greg Stevens talks about the best and worst of what patrol units saw over the weekend (#dudewheresmycar). And Leeson delves into risque country lyrics of the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
In this episode of Sacred Tension, I talk to Greg Stevens, a leader and spokesman of the Satanic Temple. In part one of this interview we discuss nontheistic religion, worship, atheism, the 7th tenent of the Satanic Temple, and much more. You can find Greg at Gregstevens.com. Malyssa and Kirt really enjoy promoting forensics by hosting this podcast, but we know that we’re promoting the activity within our already established forensics family. Maybe we can extend our fan base to our close friends and family. Maybe. But today’s guest comes from a place where speech and debate are valued in ways that will blow your mind. Greg Stevens is a coach from...well many places, but most notably Okoboji High School in Iowa. (Sidenote: why do so many people make fun of Sheboygan when there are towns in the world named Okoboji?) We loved talking to Greg about ways to increase the visibility of our programs as well as the history and legacy of speech and debate in Iowa. This is definitely an episode that will appeal to our colleagues in the debate world. He also told us about the craziest and most profitable fundraising idea we’ve ever heard. Forensics Faces is recorded and edited in Sheboygan, WI. Our theme song was written and performed by JJ Hameister. Special thanks to Steve Schappaugh and Deano Pape of the NSDA for connecting me with the folks featured in this series. If you’re a fan of Forensics Faces, please take a moment to rate and review the podcast on iTunes. The more we’re reviewed, the easier it is for others to find out about us. More information is available at www.ForensicsFaces.com, and you connect with us on Facebook & Twitter by searching Forensics Faces.
