San Diego FC are set to join MLS in 2025 as the 30th club. They're following a familiar expansion playbook: Find an underserved market, bring investors on board, and get a stadium. But as CEO Tom Penn—who also helped start LAFC—points out, there are a couple things that make this club different. For one, they're the first major men's pro team in the U.S. to have a Native tribe, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, as part of their ownership group. Additionally, the club is banking on its youth academy program, which aims to recruit the best players from San Diego and Tijuana. On this week's episode, Taylor sits down with Tom to talk about the new club and why he wanted to do this whole thing again. Managing Covid tests and mask mandates can get complicated even for a small gathering—but what about a high-profile series of events across multiple venues, in which you're testing everyone from frontline workers to Lady Gaga herself? That's the situation event planners found themselves in as they prepared for the grand opening of Los Angeles' Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. To pull off this feat, health-testing company Co-Protect had to manage thousands of tests, masks and other services, ensuring the numerous galas, press events and openings went off without a hitch. On this custom episode of Eventful: The Podcast for Meeting Professionals, we discuss this event with Darren K. Green, the chief sales officer for the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, and Tom Penn, cofounder and CEO of Co-Protect, as well as cofounder of the Los Angeles Football Club and a longtime sports analyst for ESPN. We delve into the specifics of the Academy Museum opening, what lessons it offers for meeting planners, and how Co-Protect's partnership with LA Tourism is helping elevate the security and safety of every event held in the city. Among the topics discussed in this episode: How Tom Penn's experience in the professional sports world helped him identify the potential of customized face masks for events, including business events (2:25) What Co-Protect and LA Tourism's partnership means for meeting planners (4:40) How the complex and high-profile opening of the new Academy Museum was held with a high level of safety and minimal logistical challenges thanks to this partnership (7:00) Why a consistent, comprehensive approach to testing is key for large-scale international events such as E3, Adobe and Japanese Anime, all being held in Los Angeles in the next year (14:05) How planners can navigate the frequently shifting mandates on vaccines and testing, particularly for international events (15:05) This episode was created in partnership with Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board. LAFC has had several Hollywood endings inside Banc of California Stadium over the course of our first two and a half seasons. Our first match against Seattle. Our first win over Carson. The win over Leon. Capturing the Supporters Shield. So many reasons to celebrate. We entered Derby Day with the expectations that this match against Carson would share the same fate: spectacular play, big moments, great goals. However, this was an entirely different kind of script that played out in front of a fanless-stadium. It was a horror movie in every sense of the word. LAFC was completely outplayed in all facets by the team from Carson. Our offense was non-existant. Our defense didn’t communicate. Our midfield couldn’t string passes together. And to top it all off, Carlos Vela, playing in his first match in months, came off injured in the 58th minute. For the first time in the Derby, LAFC was shut out. For the first time in 12 matches, Carlos Vela didn’t score. And, for at least the next few weeks, bragging rights go to Carson. Yuck. LAFC loses to Carson, 2-0. Hear the minute-by-minute recap on this episode. This Day in LAFC History recounts two more Derbys along with the club’s first international trophy. We say goodbye to our club President, Tom Penn (though he will still certainly be around the Banc) while saying hello to our newest club member, Mohamed Traore. And the episode would not be complete without a few thoughts on the Samba release at 7:00am. (More shoes, please.) Scarf finally picks his EPL side, and it’s a good one. (He almost dies from a sneeze, too!) For some reason, Filly offends the platypus. The Defenders try to exercise the demons (and save themselves from more expensive therapy bills) on the awful loss. And, of course, we look ahead to the next 5 games in the restart of the MLS season. Be sure to check out our new pre-game segment, One More Sleep, on IGTV! Though times are tough, it’ll be just 4 days until we get to play again, and you can count on us here at Defenders of the Banc to bring you all that is LAFC.
Los Angeles Football Club were eliminated from the MLS is Back tournament by Orlando City SC in the quarterfinal of the competition. The Lions made a cinderella run to the final match before falling to the Portland Timbers. LAFC’s Floridian adventure didn’t pan out the way Bob Bradley and company wanted, but as the regular season restarts, the seven points that LAFC earned during the tournament’s group stage leave the club in good standing as it returns to play Saturday against the Los Angeles Galaxy. LAFC dismantled the LA Galaxy 6-2 during the group stage of the MLS is Back tournament to earn three of the seven points collected in Orlando, but the Galaxy were without Jonathan Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez for that match. Chicharito won’t play in Saturday’s match either, but Dos Santos will be on the field for the Galaxy when the clubs face off in Banc of California Stadium. Saturday’s match will be LAFC’s first since the club announced the departures of forward Adam Diomande and club president Tom Penn. Ryan Wallerson of the Los Angeles Daily News, Writer at Large Alex Dwyer and the long lost Josh Gross(!!!) have gotten the original band back together for the duration of the tournament. On this sixth episode since the restart, the crew recaps LAFC’s performance in the tournament and previews the regular season restart against the Galaxy.

It's time for the final episode in May, and what a May it was! Carlitos vaults to the top of the MVP race, LAFC stays at the top of the table, and we end the month with a wonderful early celebration of pride, inclusion, and Soccer For All. LAFC played their last MLS regular season home game for over a month against Montreal. In what turned out to be just as exciting as last year's eight goal thriller, the boys in Black and Gold handle their business at the Banc yet again, taking all 3 points in a 4-2 victory. It was the best atmosphere all season at the Banc! In what will be known as the "Tifo Seen 'Round the World", The 3252 did it again with an incredible "We Will Rock You" Freddie Mercury themed creation that brought everyone to their feet! Pride was everywhere at the Banc, with rainbow armbands, rainbow warm-up jerseys, and our LAFC letters painted rainbow in honor of Pride Month. Roaring out to a 4-0 lead, LAFC's offense put on a show! Christian Ramirez with a wonderful hustle goal after a howler of an effort by Montreal's Evan Bush, the Left Foot of God striking once again, Latif blessing the Banc with a goal, and just as Scarf-strodamus predicted last episode, Tristan Blackmon got the start for the injured Steven Beitashour. After putting in a great first half on defense, Vela found an unmarked Blackmon in the box, who headed it home and the rout was on! Hear all about the 4-2 win, including the boys' "Wait, Whaaaaat?!" moment with Will Ferrell, Matthew McConaughey, and Tom Penn, Montreal fans join in the "Jump For LA Football Club" cheer, the debut of Silly and The Barf, and not one but TWO great giveaways!
