This episode is co-hosted by Michelle's son, Cody. As Michelle shares, "If you want to know who I am, Cody has been with me through it all." According to Cody, growing up, "my classmates and teachers would pull me aside and say, 'we know who your Mom is,' but for me, she was just my Mom." Michelle was born 6 years before Title IX, and never got to watch women compete growing up. Her hero was Super Bowl champ, Mean Joe Greene, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle. She didn't have a professional predecessor, so she became the Mean Joe Green – and more – of women's soccer. Legendary USA coach Tony DiCicco described her as “the best woman that has ever played.” She played on the first USWNT (the 1985 team!), won the first Women's World Cup and Golden Boot (‘91), was the first women's player to gain global fame, the first player to sign a shoe deal, and was named FIFA Player of the Century ('00). Throughout it all, Michelle's journey has been characterized by her unbridled love of the game, an unwillingness to deal with BS (she always keeps it real and calls a spade a spade), and a prioritization of her family and teammates. In fact, this ENTIRE 1985 series was her idea, as she wanted to give credit to her teammates for the foundational role they have played in the USWNT. In Michelle's story she shares about her ups and downs, her battles with U.S. Soccer, and her life today with son Cody on the farm. We hear from Anson Dorrance (Women's Soccer Coach, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill & Former Coach, USWNT), Jill Ellis (President, San Diego Wave & Former Coach, USWNT), Lesle Gallimore (GM, Seattle Reign FC & Michelle's Former USWNT Pool Teammate), and Heather O'Reilly (USWNT and TST teammates). The conversation starts with some excited talk around Kristine's former UNC teammate and Netherlands Women's Manager, Sarina Wiegman being hired as the next manager of the Lionesses (1:36); And then we head back to the beginning to talk about how Kristine found confidence in sports and found her connection to competition that would fuel her through her career at UNC and with the USWNT (2:55); Kristine then shares a leadership story and we discuss how to talk about leadership to young female athletes (10:21); We then turn the conversation to her book co-written with Dr. John Gillis, Jr., "Powerhouse", by talking about how we can foster environments for girls to embrace competition, wherein Kristine talks about Anson Dorrance's program at UNC (17:06); Shannon and Kristine then talk about the "American mentality", the term often credited as being a major part of  the sustained success of the USWNT, by talking about elements of the USWNT that define it (20:13); We then discuss the mental side of the game, specifically how former USWNT coach Tony DiCicco brought in a Mental Skills coach to the USWNT back in 1995, and how that helped Kristine grow as a player (27:47); Shannon and Krisitine then unpack a huge unanswerable question in Women's Sports: "Where would the women's game be if the 1999 World Cup were not televised?" (32:25) Before we go, Kristine defines Womanhood in 3 Words and reveals who she wants to player in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of "The Girls of Summer." During her senior year, then U.S. Women's National Team head coach Tony DiCicco called her into the U.S. WNT in January of 1997, just months after the USA had won its first Olympic gold medal. With nothing guaranteed, she chose to miss several basketball games for a shot at the National Team. Tony DiCicco was the former Head Coach of the US Women’s National and Olympic Soccer Teams, as well as the US U20 Women’s National Team.  He coached the US National Team to their famous victory in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Championship, the largest women’s sporting event in history. Unfortunately, Tony passed away in June of 2017.    In 1996, he coached the US Women’s Olympic Team to the first ever Gold Medal in Women’s Soccer. In 2008, in his return to international soccer, he coached the US to the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup Championship in Chile. Tony DiCicco is not only the most successful US National Team Coach of all time, but he is a person who understands a thing or two about building culture, team dynamics, and leadership. Jill Ellis' tenure as United States women's national team head coach came to a close with a victory and a draw in a pair of friendly matches against South Korea. That final win gave Ellis 106 in her career as U.S. head coach, setting a new record for the position. Tony DiCicco won 105 games as U.S. head coach. On this week's episode, Chelsey Bush and Jeff Kassouf discuss the highs and lows of Ellis' time in charge, which included back-to-back World Cup titles. They also speculate on who might replace her as head coach and -- perhaps more important -- what that person needs to do right away, no matter who it is. As always, they take your questions at the end of the podcast.

This week, with the Women's World Cup underway and the United States Women's National Team about to play their first game, I have found myself thinking of Tony DiCicco and the conversation I was lucky enough to have with him, as well as his contribution to the game as a coach and coach-educator. I had the privilege of meeting Tony at a coaching course with what was then the NSCAA, now United Soccer Coaches, and a little while later I was surprised when I found Tony's contact information in the subscriber list of The Coaching Journey's blog. I quickly sent him a message and after a bit of back and forth, we got on the phone and recorded a conversation. Tony's legacy will never disappear from the game, or from the countless players and coaches he has impacted however big or small. Our conversation, although several years old as of today's release, is still full of valuable and timely pieces of wisdom which is another testament to Tony. Enjoy the discussion, enjoy just a sliver of wisdom from Tony, and as you watch this year's World Cup, take a moment and think of those who have helped pave the way for today's players and coaches. Our World Cup fever has yet to break, and we spend this week reveling in some of the heretofore unexplored (at least on this podcast) nooks and crannies of modern-day American pro soccer history with one of its most unsung front office heroes.  In a career spanning over four decades, sports PR and event management executive Thom Meredith has proverbially “seen it all” across some of US sports’ most remarkable leagues, franchises and governing bodies – including remarkable (and sometimes dubious) assignments like: handling press for the woeful NFL expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers of 1976-77; managing communications for Lamar Hunt’s World Championship Tennis circuit of the early 1980s; and directing a litany of events for the fast-growing (and World Cup USA-fueled) US Soccer Federation of the 1990s.  But it’s Meredith’s work across some of the most exciting (and exasperating) teams of the late 1970s/early 1980s North American Soccer League – the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Washington Diplomats, Philadelphia Fury, and Dallas Tornado – as well as the enormously well-funded, but ultimately ill-fated Women’s United Soccer Association of the early 2000s, that really piques our obsessive interests. In this episode, we journey back with Meredith – the consummate professional soccer management insider – as he recounts priceless moments shared in the trenches with a veritable Who’s Who of the modern American game’s most indelible personalities, including: Shep Messing, Francisco Marcos, Al Miller, Phil Woosnam, Jim Karvellas, Seamus Malin, Alec Papadakis, John Hendricks, Timo Liekoski, Dick Berg, Tony DiCicco, Pele – and, of course, the incomparable investor-patron Hunt. We thank Podfly, SportsHistoryCollectibles.com, and Audible for their support of this week’s show!
