Sergio Gonzalez talks about Latinos working for belonging in Wisconsin. NPR's Ari Shaprio talks about his work behind the mic. Food Journeys explores our food systems. Plus, young people learn about birds.
Immigration reform has been completely abandoned by politicians on both sides with Christians leading the charge against people coming into the U.S. across the southern border. And with the coming winter of our discontent things will get worse. But it's important to point out that not all christians are anti-immigrant. In fact, the research of Dr. Lloyd Barba and Dr. Sergio Gonzalez helps us see that the work of creating Sanctuary spaces for undocumented people was started by devout Christians during the Reagan era. These movements formed the basis for attempts to reform immigration into a more humane, and in this case, more Christian system. Their recent limited series podcast, Sanctuary: On the Border Between Church and State is a comprehensive history of the Sanctuary Movement in the U.S. It shows the dire circumstances of people fleeing war, poverty, and oppression and how small groups of christians stood up to the U. S. government to harbor these people in their churches and homes, often at great cost. Don't forget to register for Content Warning! This week we are going back to where it all started! Our journey began on Monday, November 21, 2022, with our very first episode where we met Sergio Gonzalez. At the time, Sergio was an Unreal and 3D Trainer; now, he serves as the VFX Training Manager on the Framestore Training Team. Joining as co-host at the time was Tom Perry, an animation graduate from Escape Studios, and Runner in London. Since recording this episode Tom gone on to join the Framestore Data Services Team as a Technician where he has been to date! This episode was a blast to record in person in the London Training Room, gathered around a single microphone. It has a bit of a raw feel, and it's also the episode where the Framestore Podcast Dailies Spotify Playlist was created, thanks to Sergio. So we hope you enjoy our trip down memory lane, and please keep in mind that 2022 was a different time, and since then, we have all enhanced our knowledge and skills. We got a real one in the house today! He's a powerhouse in the weightroom and on the field, and now he is the Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at Pasadena Sam Rayburn HS, welcome Sergio Gonzalez to the show! - Growing up in Jacinto City and Woodforest and deciding whether to attend North Shore or Galena Park for high school - Going to school at UH and moving right across I45 to lay the foundation for a historic turnaround at HISD's Stephen F. Austin HS - From there coach strategically added tools to his toolkit under heavy-hitters in the Houston area like James Williams, BJ Gotte, and Kevin Berneathy - After that Coach was ready to lead an athletic department of his own and took over at Houston Chavez before taking over at Pasadena Sam Rayburn. Circle Friday September 16, 2022 on your calendar. This is the night that Coach will take his Rayburn Texan team to play....get this, his old team at Chavez......and it's homecoming!! It's a setting straight out of a movie and one where both sides are going to be playing with a lot of heart and something to prove!! - Coach loves watching his daughter play softball and he drops some serious gems on what is really important in youth athletics and the time he had to nicely pull a coach aside and give a reminder of what the point of youth sports is. This wasn't a sports parent over-stepping their bounds, this was an example of a necessary reality check! - Finally you're not going to find a bigger Houston sports team fan than Coach Gonzalez, although he is not afraid to voice a critical opinion when it is warranted! In that vein we play an all H-Town edition of Start/Bench/Cut with names like: T-Mac, Clyde the Glide, and the Beard. Coach is an authority on defensive line play so we played a 3-tech edition with names like JJ Watt, Aaron Donald, and Warren Sapp! Finally we get to the bottom of who was really at the heart of the 'Stros turnaround with names like Correa, Altuve, and Springer!
