For our 100th episode, we're bringing back familiar voices for a conversation that's part tradition, part philosophy, and all about fly fishing. Join us as we sit down with the Liars and Tyers—a group of anglers who have been tying, fishing, and occasionally stretching the truth together for over 15 years. In this episode, we take on the age-old question: What is fly fishing? Is it about the gear? The technique? The spirit of the sport? We put different scenarios to the test—bamboo rods, streamers with gold blades, Euro nymphing with long rods and tight-line techniques, even the controversial question of chicken livers. Where do we draw the line between fly fishing and everything else? Our guests weigh in with their own experiences, preferences, and strong opinions. We explore how fly fishing has evolved over the years and whether modern innovations—like jig-style nymphs and synthetic materials—change the essence of the sport. And of course, we don't shy away from a few good-natured jabs at questionable hats, catch rates, and beer choices along the way.As we wrap up, we turn our attention to bucket-list destinations, with dreams ranging from smallmouth bass in Tennessee to tarpon in the Keys, brook trout in Labrador, and the untamed waters of Patagonia.Whether you're a purist, a modern angler, or just someone who loves a good fly-fishing debate, this episode is for you. Thanks for being part of our journey to 100 episodes—here's to many more.Resources:Visit southeasternfly.comSign up for our newsletterProduced by NOVA

Well, the UK falconry season wrapped up for Simon Tyers on January 31, and he returns to the program to give us run down of the changes he made at the outset of the season, whether he believes they were of value, and what changes he might make for the 2025/26 season. I then ask Simon about his views on the importance of maintaining consistency among three aspects of gamehawking - the location where one hunts, the weight of the hawk, and the time of day. We then turn our attention to the process that Simon likes to follow when returning his hawks to the free-loft mews. Before concluding the episode with a book recommendation for the off season, I ask Simon about his most memorable day of the 2024/25 season. Thanks for listening to Game Hawker Edition.

Simon Tyers returns to the show to update us on how his season is going thus far. We begin the episode talking about similarities and differences among the falconers that have already contributed to Game Hawker Edition, Simon then updates us with regard to how the work being done by the local Water Authority across his hunting ground has progressed. We then turn our attention to Smog's tendency to ignore the lure, how Simon addressed this, and whether the early season remedial work has solved the issue for Simon. Similarly, we get an update of whether Sonic continues to be distracted by wild peregrines. I ask Simon for his opinion on the utility of flushing game for a falcon that is out of position in the hope that as a consequence it learns that in order to catch game, it has to be “in position”.  Before concluding the episode with a a description of Storm's most recent flight, Simon describes some of challenges he has faced weather-wise.  Thanks for listening to Game Hawker Edition.  Once again, I hope you enjoy this episode.

This week British falconer, Simon Tyers, author of  "The Specialist Falcon – A Personal Approach to Lowland Hawking”, joins me for a wide ranging discussion on his philosophical approach to falconry in general, and, more specifically,  how he prepares his hunting birds, including a description of his "Perfect Day". Simon explains some terms specific to UK falconry, constraints that falconers in the UK must face, and the uphill battle to re-initiate a peregrine falcon harvest despite total recovery of the species. He provides an example of just how costly it can be to participate in hunting, given that landowners retain shooting rights on their land - North American hunters will likely find it difficult to comprehend the costs.Links to the bookThe Specialist Falcon WebsiteMarshal Radio

Andrew Rule is a Gold Walkley winning journalist and author (Underbelly) who grew up on a farm in Gippsland and made his way from The Maffra Spectator to the pinnacles of Australian investigative reporting. His father, Keith, spent his life felling and fashioning timber, and this eulogy is a beautiful ode to a man and his axe. It was written as a feature for The Age in 1998, written as Keith Rule lay in the next room dying, and then adapted slightly to be read at the funeral in Lake Tyers on 27th June 1998. There is no audio of the original speech, so Andrew Rule has re-recorded the speech for this podcast.  Andrew Rule mentions his colleague Les Carlyon in this chat, and Andrew's eulogy for Les Carlyon is also on Speakola.  Andrew Rule has a 'Life and Crimes' podcast and I'm the current guest talking footy rogues, 'Black sheep in footy boots'.  Sign up as a free or paid subscriber to Speakola here.  $5 a month to be a paid subscriber.  Thanks also to those who are donors or Patreons.  This episode is sponsored by DocPlay. In episode eighty seven of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the founder of Larry King Haircare, Larry King. In 2019, Rachel Tyers was working in marketing for a B2B company that sold medical devices. It was during this time that Rachael was made aware of a patented topical skincare lab sample and, having struggled with acne for the better part of a decade, decided it was worth trying. Rachael read studies, learned the science behind the formula, and saw real results in her own skin, so she and her mother brainstormed ways to raise capital and pitched for the rights to the product. That patented acne solution was then formulated into tbh Skincare's first product, Acne Hack. tbh Skincare launched online in March 2020, and within a month the brand had hit $10k in sales despite the bulk of the country plunging into lockdown. Rachael had belief in the tbh science and was aware that the brand's marketing strategy would be make or break in terms of cutting through the heavily saturated skincare space online, so she persisted in implementing a number of marketing devices to get the product into the right hands- she sought influencer collaborations from people she genuinely felt her product could help, she began selling bundled products to increase basket size, and she seeded samples out to consumers so that she had a bank of real before and after photos to advertise with. Within 18 months, tbh Skincare had hit almost $1 million in sales. Beyond that marketing strategy, what I found sets Rachael apart is that she's entered the beauty space with a personal need. Rather than entering the sphere wanting to create a brand and go from there, Rachael had identified a problem that she had spent her whole adult life struggling with, discovered a solution, and wanted to make that solution available to others. In this conversation, Rachael shares how she made a digitally-native lockdown-launch work in her favour, the art of meaningful collaboration and how to do it well, and why it's sometimes worth slowing down the rate of product release. The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1895 Birth of Spencer Woolley Kimball, American business, civic, and religious leader. He was the twelfth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He was also a gardener and wrote, Where you have a plot of land, however small, plant a garden.  Staying close to the soil is good for the soul. 1906 Birth of Jean Galbraith, Australian botanist, gardener, writer, and poet. Jean is remembered for her books on Australian botany including three editions of the seminal Wildflowers of Victoria (1950), Collins Field Guide to the Wild Flowers of Southeast Australia, and a children's book Grandma Honeypot (1964). Her charming book, Garden in a Valley (1939), became an instant garden classic when it was republished in 1985. Born in Tyers (a little town in Gippsland, Australia), Jean spent almost eighty years in her family home called Dunedin ("Do-NEE-din"). At Dunedin, Jean maintained an enormous garden, which became a draw for visitors from all over Australia and the world. The artist, Peter Cuffley, painted a fabulous representation of Dunedin. It's one of the most iconic garden art pieces of the past century.  Jean learned botany through letters she exchanged with the botanist Herbert B. Williamson during the 1920s. When Jean turned 21, Herbert sent her a microscope and it became one of her most treasured possessions. As a writer, Jean had a distinctive style and voice. Her writing was more akin to John Muir's than the stiff formal writing of her scientific peers. For 50 years she delighted the readers of the two magazines she regularly wrote for: The Garden Lover and the Victorian Naturalist.  As a person, Jean lived an incredibly simple life. She did not have a car, tv, or phone and wrote her books longhand. By all accounts, she was one of the kindest souls to have ever walked the earth. She wanted children to know and love nature. She was an advocate for plant preservation - especially wildflowers in their native habitats. Jean believed in the spiritual and healing aspects of gardening. She believed that the garden was a metaphor for life and for living.  In 1970, Jean was awarded the Australian Natural History Medallion. Jean died in 1999, just before her 93rd birthday.  Jean once wrote that she knew the stories of every plant in her garden, There is no flower in the garden that has not its remembered history.  And Jean loved her garden, despite its faults. It is not a model garden, rarely, alas, is it even orderly.  (But) in spite of its failures and mistakes and imperfections,  its airs are sweet, its flowers love to bloom, and we are happy in it.    1928 On this day, Margarita Grace Phipps, wife of John S. Phipps (an heir to the Phipps family fortune), hosted the first meeting of The Garden Club of Palm Beach at her home, Casa Bendita. Fifteen women attended the event. Mrs. Frederick E. Guest is credited with having the original idea for the club Today Casa Bendita's remaining six-acre garden has evolved into Casa Phippsberger, the island's most sensational private botanical garden. And, The Garden Club of Palm Beach continues to grow. One of the ways the club stays relevant is to have a member attend every single town meeting to make sure the club can take advantage of opportunities to help the community.   In 2010, the club installed a beautification and education garden at the Southern Oasis Traffic Circle. The garden features plants that thrive in the Palm Beach climate. That same year, the club installed xeriscape landscaping in eight Kaleidoscope Flower Beds on Royal Poinciana Way. In 2011, the club created a vertical garden on the Saks Fifth Avenue store. Called the Living Wall, the project has become an iconic element of the Worth Avenue Restoration Project. In 2021, the club created the four-acre Bradley Park Tidal Garden. When the club began work on a children's playground in Bradley Park, members realized that frequent flooding from king tides needed to be addressed in the plans.  The solution was the creation of a tidal garden.  King tides are bigger than normal tides and they can cause an enormous amount of damage to the Landscapeape. The new tidal garden was designed by SMI Landscape Architecture LLC, to withstand king tides by incorporating sunken gardens with channels that send water back where it belongs. The majority of the garden is designed with native plants and natural elements like climbable cap-stone boulders. The next project will be the restoration of the Chinese Garden at The Society of The Four Arts where the demonstration gardens are maintained by the Palm Beach Garden Club. The seven demonstration gardens illustrate different themed garden spaces and include the Chinese Garden, the Fragrant Moonlight Garden, the Palm Garden, the Bromeliad Garden, the Jungle Garden, the Spanish Facade Garden, the Formal Garden, the Tropical Garden, and the Madonna Garden.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Aquascaping by George Farmer This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Simple Ideas For Small Outdoor Spaces. You can get a copy of Aquascaping by George Farmer and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes.   Botanic Spark 1961 On this day, the American poet Sylvia Plath wrote a poem called I Am Vertical. Here's the first verse: I Am Vertical But I would rather be horizontal. I am not a tree with my root in the soil Sucking up minerals and motherly love So that each March I may gleam into leaf, Nor am I the beauty of a garden bed Attracting my share of Ahs and spectacularly painted, Unknowing I must soon unpetal. Compared with me, a tree is immortal And a flower-head not tall, but more startling, And I want the one's longevity and the other's daring.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

John Tyers, the new head of Wells Fargo's independent advisor business, has a big job. Many in the industry would say it's a tough job. Some might even say he's got an impossible job. It doesn't matter what people say — Wells has made a big bet on John to turn around the firm's FiNet advisor business, as well as their First Trust clearing division. They've even asked to put his 30 years of experience in the RIA and custody industry to use and build out a Hybrid RIA custody platform. John is up to the task, and not just because he speaks the languages of RIA custody and advisor technology as well as anyone in the industry. He's told us that he also has the one thing that has alluded many others in the past who have tried to make full-fledged RIA custodians out of the wire houses, and that is full support of the people he reports to — the senior management team of the massive and powerful organization that is Wells Fargo.I'm excited to have John on the show to talk about why he took this big job, his initial plans to change and improve the landscape of the FiNet and First Clearing businesses, and why he thinks Hybrid RIAs will view Wells as a key partner for growth.
