Episode 442 of the Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch features Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci, who are serving as dugout reporters for Fox Sports for the Dodgers-Yankees World Series. Both Verducci and Rosenthal have long careers as accomplished writers; Verducci works for Sports Illustrated while Rosenthal writes for The Athletic. (I have worked with both.) In this podcast Rosenthal and Verducci discuss why this World Series feels so big; how they prepare for their Fox TV work versus writing; the potential viewership of this World Series; why we sometimes see on social media sometimes some fans not happy with in-game MLB interviews; how they approach the post-game interview; the Series impact on Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto when it comes to legacy and more. First, it was the Costa report, then, it was the Verducci report, next, it was the Morosi report, and now finally Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that the Tigers have had trade talks with the Dodgers and Orioles regarding Tarik Skubal. Valenti starts off the week reacting to this new report.
Mike and Stoney start off the show with a reaction to the forgettable national anthem at the Home Run Derby last night, comparing it to the worst they've ever seen. They then set off on an almost 3-hour-long topic, Tom Verducci's report about other teams' interest in Tigers star pitcher Tarik Skubal. They weigh the positives and negatives to trading away Skubal and what Scott Harris might do throughout the rest of the show, taking plenty of your calls and reading more of your ticket texts.
In Hour 2, Willard and Dibs chat with FOX's Tom Verducci about his experience at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama last night, continue to break down the entire event, but also react to another Giants loss.
In Hour 2, Willard and Dibs spend a few minutes on some breaking 49ers news (they signed TE Logan Thomas), chat with Tom Verducci of FOX about the Giants' options moving forward, and more.
Steven St. John and Nate Bukaty wake up with KC on this Thursday edition of the show. Last night, Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated had an article published by the media company that read, "The Royals are the MLB Disaster No One is Talking About." The guys spent the hour addressing the points made by Verducci in his article. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With MLB's opening day right around the corner, and the World Baseball Classic creating a lot of buzz, hosts Michael Barr and Damian Sassower welcome MLB Network Insider Tom Verducci to the show. Verducci has covered the game for more than 40 years, and is a FOX Sports broadcaster and senior columnist for Sports Illustrated. They discuss baseball's top headlines, including recent high profile injuries at the WBC, the excitement of those games, and MLB's new rules. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
SI Writer and MLB Network Analyst Tom Verducci joins the show to discuss the career of Tim McCarver, what is the biggest story with the new changes, how the new rules will affect the pace of play and the players themselves, which team has the most pressure on them and and his general thoughts about the Blue Jays chances in the AL East.

A., Devore, S., Friedman, D., Diehl, B. V., Scott, C., Thijs, R., Wisniewski, T., Ueberheide, B., Thom, M., Aronica, E., Devinsky, O. Abstract: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading type of epilepsy-related death. Severely depressed brain activity in these cases may impair respiration, arousal, and protective reflexes, occurring as a prolonged postictal generalized EEG suppression (PGES) and resulting in a high-risk for SUDEP. In autopsy hippocampus and cortex, we observed no proteomic differences between SUDEP and epilepsy cases, contrasting our previously reported robust differences between epilepsy and controls. Transcriptomics in hippocampus and cortex from surgical epilepsy cases segregated by PGES identified 55 differentially expressed genes (37 protein-coding, 15 lncRNAs, three pending) in hippocampus. Overall, the SUDEP proteome and high-risk SUDEP transcriptome largely reflected other epilepsy cases in the brain regions analyzed, consistent with diverse epilepsy syndromes and comorbidities associated with SUDEP. Thus, studies with larger cohorts and different epilepsy syndromes, as well as additional anatomic regions may identify molecular mechanisms of SUDEP. Copy rights belong to original authors. Inside this edition of “Without a Curse,” Alex takes a look at the plethora of injuries Red Sox players have suffered so far in camp, and attempts to discern which ones are cause for legitimate concern. He also sifts through Tom Verducci’s column defending the Red Sox’s rotation, which generated quite a stir last week. Though some of Verducci’s individual arguments are cherry-picked, Alex says his greater point about the declining importance of an ace in baseball is a good one. On the ace topic, Alex shares his theory on the Red Sox’s rotation. Hint: it involves the word “bridge.” In the “Around the League” segment, Alex talks about the feasibility of an international draft for amateur players.
