In 1936, Victor Hugo Green published the first edition of what he called The Negro Motorist Green Book, a 16-page listing of businesses in the New York metropolitan area that would welcome African American customers. By its final printing in 1966, the Green Book had gone international, with a 100-page book that included not just friendly businesses throughout the United States but also hotels and resorts that would be safe for African American travelers in Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Africa, along with a list of currency exchange rates.  Joining me this week to help us learn more about why African American travelers needed the Green Book and how Victor Green and his family created such an important and long-lasting publication is award-winning television and radio broadcaster and financial educator Alvin Hall, author of the new book, Driving the Green Book: A Road Trip Through the Living History of Black Resistance. In 2003, Misasha drove across the country from New York to Los Angeles with two of her law school girlfriends. In her words: “We were all Asian, and this was the time of SARS, so while they felt a LOT of eyes on us (and repeatedly joked, to ourselves, “no one cough, or we're never getting out of here”, which wasn't so much of a joke as us trying to make light of a painful reality), we never felt like we couldn't stop at a gas station, or that we couldn't find a place to stay at night, or that we couldn't find a public restroom to use.” However, those restrictions were reality for generations of Black Americans, and the legacy of those restrictions continues to reverberate today, and that's why our conversation is so important.   Today, we speak with Candacy Taylor about her carefully researched book about the Green Book, called the Overground Railroad (doesn't the title alone make you want to hear more)?  We not only discuss the immense hurdles and realities for Black people who were just trying to go somewhere by car, but we also discuss topics like sundown towns (you may be surprised to hear that you might be living in one, historically), how institutionalized racism appears through overpasses, and what we all can do to make change right now.   What to listen for:  What it was like for a Black family to drive Route 66  A primer to sundown towns - the towns in the US in the 1900s that clearly did not allow people of color to stay after dark; towns that weren't researched and discussed until the 2000s!  All about Victor Green, and the Green Book he created to help Black people safely navigate road trips, and more over time The shocking truths about how racist the Northern United States was/is, how sneaky people got in creating systems to keep Black people away, even without the Jim Crow signs of the South The parallels between the mid-1900s and today, and what Candacy wants more White women to do   Items of interest from today's conversation:  Truths about the US Prison System, with Marcus Bullock: Episodes 83 & 84  See if the Smithsonian's Negro Motorist Green Book exhibit is coming to your city!

This publication offered information for Black families traveling in racially segregated Jim Crow. This conversation taps into the history of this historical social justice approach that played a vital role in creating safe travels and movement in outdoor spaces for Black Lives, as well as makes the connection on how the need for mobility justice and safety still exist at this time. Victor Green was born in London, England, and from a very young age, he always wanted to know how business worked and how to do everything himself. He was able to assess things quickly and knew what needed to be done in business situations. Because of this, he could spot opportunities and move faster than others. Victor had business smarts and the ability to make quick decisions. His energy, and inquisitive nature, made him look at many business opportunities, some of which he tried before he eventually became his own boss. Ideas such as: opening a deli, importing cuff links from the USA, silk ties from Italy, importing Sangria from Spain. His first full-time business venture was starting a publishing company. From this he went on to start many other businesses, such as organizing conventions, printing, advertising, direct mail, PR, photography, import and export, manufacturing, soccer clubs, website design, creating portal websites, real estate, finance company, business consulting, mentoring and lecturing on business matters. His business experience also covers selling and acquiring businesses, helping company start-ups and revitalizing failing businesses. “take your time. Don't be in a hurry to be a failure. What you have to realise is that if you make a mistake then that factor could cripple you for the rest of your life. You could end up with debts which you have to pay off so your life is virtually ruined because of this. So please, please, please take your time, do your research and when you've done it in, do it again and if needy do it again to make sure that you are not being biased in your mind wanting… What is your USP, what is your unique selling point, what will make you better and different to what's on the market? Author Candacy Taylor’s stepfather grew up in the Jim Crow South. But it wasn’t until she began researching her new book, “Overground Railroad: The Green Book and the Roots of Black Travel in America,” that she started to understand what he’d endured. Black travelers in the 20th-century U.S. might be stopped by police on any pretext — and face serious harassment. They might be turned away by hostile hoteliers or gas station attendants. And that’s not even mentioning “Sundown Towns,” all-white towns which sometimes even featured signs warning black people to stay out in the harshest of terms. Missouri and Illinois were among the five states having the most Sundown Towns, Taylor writes. And so black men like Taylor’s stepfather turned to the “Green Book.” Victor Green’s book highlighted businesses from coast to coast where black travelers could count on friendly reception — a respite from the racism and uncertainty that marred other spots on the roadways.

In the first half of the 20th century, the automobile became a symbol of freedom to American families. Middle-class families able to afford their own car were no longer restricted to train or bus timetables, and the great American road trip was born. But for black Americans, this new freedom collided with old hatred, prejudices and dangers. The road trip's appeal called to everyone equally, but not everyone was treated equally. African Americans began using “the Green Book,” a guide to places that were friendly to them along their journey. In September, I met Tamiko Harvey, the travel blogger behind Passports and Grub, who actually took her daughter on a family road trip using the Green Book. How Tomiko became interested in the Green Book Tomiko and I met while touring the Civil Rights Trail in Birmingham, Alabama, where they actually have a Green Book on display there in the Civil Rights Museum. That really sparked her interest in learning more about the book, and she was able to purchase a copy on Amazon. As she says, we're supposed to be living in a post-racial society, but of course that's not true. So she wanted to see what it would be like traveling the Green Book today. Why the Green Book was necessary As Tomiko says, black people in the early 20th century had to plan out every detail of a road trip. They had to dress a certain way, they had to be sure of what time of day they would be traveling in certain areas, and they had to know their route precisely because a wrong turn could literally be deadly. It was a really planned and methodical process that we don't even think about now. Black motorists had to think about where they were going to eat, where they were going to get gas, where they could use a restroom. A lot of these travelers were Civil Rights activists or business travelers. Leisure travel was not as prominent as we think of it today. “Vacation and recreation without humiliation.” The book was originally published in 1936 in New York, and as Tomiko says it became a sort of Yellow Pages for black travelers. It outlined friendly restaurants, gas stations, hotels, drug stores and barber shops that were safe during Jim Crow. It came about because Victor Green, the author, was having difficulty traveling. The book was circulated in black establishments, even in hotels and restaurants. And it was marketed with the tagline: “Vacation and recreation without humiliation.” About 15,000 copies a year were sold to black travelers. Brittany told me a great story about brothers divided over the revolution that you have to hear. Tomiko travels the book Tomiko and her family live outside of Nashville, Tennessee, and when her daughter had to go to Orlando, Florida for a cheering competition, she decided to take the book and see what it was like to travel through those Southern states for black people in the 1930s. As she says, they often had to go an hour or two out of their way just to ensure they were going somewhere safe. A lot of the places on the routes were actually people's homes, old gas stations or even empty lots now. She said it added something like three hours to their trip to go out of the way. Her story, and the story of the book, is so fascinating. I highly recommend checking out this episode. In the Jim Crow era of racial segregation, travelling in the United States was fraught with difficulties if you were black. At best it was inconvenient, as white-owned businesses refused to serve African American motorists, repair their cars or offer them hotel accommodation. At worst, travel could be life-threatening if you walked into the wrong bar in the wrong town. That's why in 1936 Victor H Green, a Harlem postal worker, published the first edition of The Green Book. The guide listed hotels, restaurants, bars and service stations which would serve African Americans and was an attempt, in Victor Green's words, "to give the Negro traveller information that will keep from him running into difficulties and embarrassments". 'Embarrassments' seems rather a tame word for the outright hostility and physical danger which many black travellers experienced in segregation-era America. The Green Book became a catalogue of refuge and tolerance in a hostile and intolerant world. Alvin Hall hits the highway, Green Book in hand, to document a little-known aspect of racial segregation: the challenges - for mid-20th century America's new black middle class - of travelling in their own country. Alvin's journey starts in Tallahassee, Florida, where he was born and raised, takes him through Alabama and Tennessee and concludes in Ferguson, Missouri. The guide ceased publication soon after the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. But, as Alvin discovers in Ferguson, many African Americans still feel far from safe as they drive. Alvin asks whether the Green Book ceased publication too soon.
