Credenda is our musical guest today, they are a family band. I've only had a few of them on the show but I really enjoy this probably more than any other type of interview because of the family dynamics and interaction. I just love getting involved with that, and I'm sure you're going to love being part of this great conversation too. So strap up your seatbelts and let's take a ride to Nashville, Tennessee to visit the family vocal harmony trio, Credenda! Before we get into the show, I just want to remind you that my coaching program is open for you folks out there in need of coaching in these categories: Relationship coaching, Spiritual coaching, Life coaching, and of course, Podcast coaching. So for all my dHarmic Evolution fans and supporters who are looking for life-changing results in any of these areas, please email me at james@dharmicevolution.com I'll set up a 30-minute NO COST, NO OBLIGATION Zoom call for you and I to vet this out and see if we are a good fit together,  because this is one-on-one coaching. It's not group coaching. Therefore, I can only handle a limited number of people and I hope it's you! Again, there will be limited spaces available as this is “one-on-one”, so reach out ASAP to reserve a spot! Back to Credenda! Music for the soul, that's what they are! They are a family vocal harmony trio consisting of mom, (Barbara), brother (Daniel), and sister (Anna). Their signature sound, which can be best described as Americana with the heart of Gospel, and it is marked by blood harmony, unique songwriting, and soaring melodies. With a retro yet modern sound, they pay tribute to the bands of the past and present while at the same time bringing a wholly unique and original sound that will bring peace to the listener. They also bring an approach to classic songs that is all their own! You will feel like part of the family as you join them for a time of stories and music! Barbara, Daniel, and Anna shared great stories and experiences, and you will love their sense of humor and most especially the music that we featured here today. It will absolutely be an enjoyable hour, so let us all give Credenda a warm dHarmic Evolution welcome! More about Credenda dHarmic Evolution has been a place for indie music and a lot of up and coming artists are here all the time, so let's show our support for Credenda and their music through different platforms. You can go check out their website, social media pages and music platforms and follow them through these. All the links are provided below!  Quotes: 05:51 “I was just a mom. I actually was into classical music. I'm  one of these prodigy kids that my parents had in lessons from a very young age, and I gave it up in my late teens, and went into a nursing program instead of following through on my music. And so when we had tons of kids, and they all started showing that they were very musical. I just heard of them all together. We did music together, I would write a bit and they'd sing it and, and it just evolved, but the sound just produces itself, I think.” - Barbara   12:30 “And we go on this sort of little family, with sweet, angelic harmonies. And it was kind of interesting, it didn't matter how drunk people were, everybody just stopped doing anything, and they didn't turn around from the bar. And watch, and listen. So we knew that what we were delivering was having an impact in some way. And somebody told us later that the harmonies bring peace to them. I think there's something about harmony when musicians put harmony together.” - Barbara   22:41 “I wasn't this kid, this millennial that would be glued to my phone growing up. I loved books and literature and the influence of parents that they brought into the house, but the music and just family culture was important to me.” - Anna   26:47 “I'll kind of build everything around that melody, and the lyrics just kind of incidentally, fall into it. And mom was the original lyricist, but she kind of gave me the self belief that I could start contributing to that department. So I've been doing a lot more recently.” - Daniel   42:16 “If I had to go with a word for our recording process, it's casual. We're not like, “I want to do that again, do it again.” People are really doing vocal bits over and over until it's just perfect. A lot of our best work is done like “One Take Jake” style, if we can.” - Credenda   50:42 “When people ask us, “What do you like to do besides music?” And then I always had this saying that musicians don't have a social life in general. We sort of make time to do things in periods throughout the day.” - Daniel   53:40 “My inspiration to any up and coming songwriter that's just hit Nashville or is just trying to make it in music in general, is keep at it. Be patient with yourself, your growth. Always have a circle of friends around you, even if it's just one or two people that kind of anchor you, and have conviction. Don't go for a deal just when it's offered to you, because sometimes it's not the right decision to make. So be patient. Be patient. Just keep at it. It will happen.” - Credenda Timestamps: 01:00 Introducing Credenda 02:30 Introducing the three members of Credenda and how the band was formulated. 04:38 Barbara shares who she was listening to growing up and her influences in music. 07:45How did the name Credenda come about? 09:32 The importance of the dictionary in songwriting. 11:21 How was their experience on Puckett's and if they played there often. 15:04 Listen to “A Bridge in Dickson County” by Credenda 19:14 How did “A Bridge in Dickson County” come to have a life of its own? 22:22 The heroes in music that Anna had as she was growing up. 23:33 Anna shares her journey on bringing out her voice. 25:55 How is Daniel's process in creating and coming up with sounds? 27:02 How do Credenda come up with things and contribute as individuals? 28:43 The story of how Credenda went to Nashville and where they were before that. 34:25 How was Credenda's transition as they stayed in Nashville? 35:36 Listen to “Far Side Of The River” by Credenda 38:52 Who is behind “Far Side Of The River” and what is it about? 40:14 Credenda shares their recording process and how they get their songs completed. 44:55 What do Ann, Daniel and Barbara like to do during their chill time besides music? 52:45 Credenda's sign off message to the audience and inspirational wisdom to the upcoming artists. 54:58 Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist: Make sure you're not missing out on all our “Rising dHarmic Stars Spotify Playlists”. Structure:  Background, JC’s YouTube videos, Tiny Desk concerts (up to 8:30); Instrumental & vocal virtuosity and technical skill, guests in the studio, parental appreciation of JC (8:29-12:05); Popularity with musicians but not yet the general public, the relevance of Grammy Awards, can jazz musicians be superstars?, Hannah’s listening habits & favorites (12:05-17:20); Close listening as opposed to background music, situations when she listens to music or podcasts, complexity/quality/desire to listen to something, impressiveness versus what music she could have done herself (17:20-22:40); Music as “a coloring book” with rules and whether or not it’s art, which prominent artists “can’t sing”?  (22:40-30:55); A tasty dish according to J.Gold is likelier w/ a smaller number of ingredients?  Not so for music?  (30:55-33:00); the album “Djesse Vol.2” and shifting preferences in its songs, African cultural appropriation, Gospel & Kanye (33:00-38:06); Is JC “obscure enough” for OoO? (38:06-39:10); “Here Comes the Sun” & cover songs generally, can a young person cover standards and classics with gravitas and sufficient emotion? An instrument versus a voice conveying emotions with words, vocal affectation and experimentation, subtle variations in harmony (39:10-49:26); More music education in public schools to understand JC’s music?  Musical talent versus academic study.  Musicals and being outed as a non-fan of Randy Rainbow (49:26-56:58); The album as a whole, Hannah cares not for genre or DJ Poseur’s activism, vocal loops by JC and Sparks, workout music & repetition  (56:58-1:03:19); Do we like music music that we want to make ourselves? More “amp you up” workout music, Hannah rejects more categories and dichotomies but is an album listener, what do we skip and why? (1:03:19-1:07:18); R&B on the radio & DJ Poseur’s Beijing roommate revenge for Mariah Carey, R&B and JC’s commercial success, videos of the musicians playing the song, JC’s discography (1:07:18-1:14:22); Hannah’s rating system will not be forthcoming (1:14:22-1:18:17); Could DJ Poseur like an album by an artist he doesn’t like?  His rating of “Djesse Vol.2” in a roundabout way through middle school music class (1:18:17-1:24:05); Transition between picks, skinny dark-haired white dudes who sing a lot, Hyperpotamus covering The Beatles and other familiar pop songs versus JC’s ways, cringeworthy comparisons of awe and musical skillz (1:24:05-1:35:30); pop music versus opera in vocal virtuosity, obscure/hidden talents versus being “world best” at something everyone (thinks they) can do, how to go viral with a music video or not (1:35:30-1:41:57); Specs for “Delta” and general thoughts on a cappella’s fit with “pop” or “experimental” music (1:41:57-1:46:14); “Delta” versus “Largo Bailón” and “taking drums literally” , novelty albums and formulaic songwriting, unexpected bassline placement, love-themed lyrics, a cappella & psychic powers (1:46:14-1:55:15); Noisier elements and when do his loops come together and sound like a song?, RIYLS with vocal loops or pedal board composition (1:55:15-1:59:14); Attempts at rating and comparison between album picks, revisiting whether the possibility of one being able to make a particular kind of music oneself as a musician influences liking it, Hannah’s a cappella history and ambition (1:59:14-2:02:56); DJ Poseur’s rating of “Delta”, what’s annoying enough to turn off or skip?  For Hannah, it’s autotune. (2:02:56 to end)   Disclaimer article for JC being too popular/well known for OoO:  https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/nov/28/jacob-collier-grammy-nomination-best-album   JC’s cover of “Here Comes the Sun”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXf1nUVdVuM  Hyperpotamus’ cover of “Strawberry Fields Forever”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zr9syen5Lw  Hyperpotamus’ most-viewed music video (91k views, not 40k as DJ Poseur misspeaks) “In the Time”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK_bkWreCdo     RIYL for JC:  Nickel Creek, old musicals (for Djesse v.2)  more generally...Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, funky/soulful 1970s jazz/R&B, The Manhattan Transfer, PM Dawn, Sonik Boom of Love RIYL Hyperpotamus:  A Cappella music, Emily Wells, Pentatonix, Chanticlear, Rag Fair, Björk's "Medúlla"   For reference, DJ Poseur gets the scale wrong when comparing the number of views for YouTube videos.  As of late Feb. 2021, “Gangnam Style” and “Baby Shark” are in the billions, not hundreds of millions like Pentatonix.  Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol. 2” has about 25 thousand views.  Hyperpotamus’ “Delta” album has a little over a dozen views.

Deke Sharon ladies and gentlemen! This guy is a super awesome guy! He is a super awesome friend. I loved this interview! Deke started the Contemporary A Cappella Society in his dorm room. There is so much to list and I didn't want to miss any of them so... Instead of trying to list all of his amazing work I just reached over and grabbed his bio. Take a look! Deke produced “The Sing-Off“ worldwide (USA, Netherlands, China, South Africa), which had the highest ratings of any new, unscripted television show in the US in 2009, and was the third highest rated show on NBC in 2010. In addition, Deke served as arranger, on-site music director and vocal producer for Universal’s “Pitch Perfect“ & “Pitch Perfect 2“ & “Pitch Perfect 3“ starring Anna Kendrick & Rebel Wilson. Deke founded the Contemporary A Cappella Society while in college, and is responsible for many seminal a cappella programs, including the CARAs (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, ICCAs (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella), BOCA (Best of College A Cappella Compilations), the first contemporary a cappella conferences (The A Cappella Summit), the Contemporary A Cappella League, the professional ensembles Voasis and Vocalosity, and Camp A Cappella. His latest project for Disney – D Cappella – launched in 2018. He is also contemporary a cappella’s most prolific arranger, having arranged over 2,000 songs, with many of them in print worldwide with Hal Leonard/Contemporary A Cappella Publishing. In this first of two parts, my longtime friend and bandmate Steph and I cover the basics of vocal harmony by singing a simple melody over a single chord. Then we harmonize the chorus of one of our favourite songs to perform with our cover band, "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus. THIS MIX FEATURES REGGAE’S VOCAL HARMONY GROUPS FROM THE 60S, 70S, AND 80S.I took it back to the roots on this one. I focused on songs with an impressive vocal arrangement. This is a specific selection of songs with male singers harmonizing together.I featured The Wailers, mostly from the “Catch A Fire” album. That album has that very dry, grassroots sound. This was before instrumentation such as horn sections and electric guitars were added. Before the female energy of the I-Threes was added. The mix also featured some of The Heptones‘ Studio One era hits. I dropped in some original Israel Vibration before they split. Other groups featured are The Techniques, The Abyssinians, The Gladiators, The Sensations, The Mighty Diamonds, and The Silvertones. You also hear songs from Lloyd Parks and We the People, The Sharks, The Royals, The Cables, and The Flames.Listen to those names and you know these brothers were from a different time. These vocal groups created some of the most beautiful music and the most powerful songs. You feel their passion because of the emphasis conveyed within the harmonies. There was something special about those days. Its the sweet soulful sound of great reggae music! If you enjoy this, check out episode 74. It’s entitled “The Greatest Reggae Bands of All Time (not including the Wailers).” That show features Aswad, Steel Pulse, Third World, Israel Vibration, Black Uhuru, and Inner Circle. Similar material is on The Studio One tribute episodes: 55 and 56.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
