In this episode of 365 Amplified, hosts Stephanie Díaz de León, Rob Chappell, Omar Waheed, and Dave Dahmer cover a range of critical issues impacting Wisconsin and beyond. Topics Covered:
Lauren Kunis is the CEO and executive director of VoteRiders, a nonpartisan nonprofit focused on ensuring that all citizens can exercise their right to vote. VoteRiders provides voter ID information, helps citizens secure IDs, and supports organizations, volunteers, and communities in sustaining voter ID education and assistance efforts. With a career dedicated to strengthening democracy, Lauren has designed and managed impactful voter education, civic engagement, and government accountability programs globally. Lauren was the National Voter Registration Day Program Director at Nonprofit VOTE, leading the holiday to a record number of voter registrations in 2020. This year Time and The Democracy Heroes have given her their top honors for her incredible work.
America is facing an emergency. With a momentous election around the corner, a tsunami of new laws across the country make it difficult if not impossible for some people to vote. Perfectly eligible voters being denied the right to vote, blocked from their duty to vote for lack of a governmental issued photo...
So you live in one of the states that require some form of ID to vote. Everyone has one, right? In fact, there are lots of reasons someone might not have a valid ID. And getting one takes time, transportation, specific paperwork, availability during business hours, and of course, money. VoteRiders is a nonprofit organization that helps people get IDs in states where they need them to vote. On this episode we talk to Selene Gomez, VoteRiders' National Outreach Director, about why that work is so important.
Part 1:We speak with Ceridwen Cherry, legal director for VoteRiders. We discuss the various legislation that is being proposed and implemented to prevent "vote fraud" which has been very rare, or completely not proven. The targets of such laws are students, older people, people who move towns. They are losing the right to vote because of the onerous demand for proof of citizenship, which is hard to meet.Part 2:We speak with Bob Lord, Fellow at the institute for Policy Studies, and Senior Advisor on Tax Policy at Patriotic Millionaires. We discuss how the tax system has allowed the very rich to accumulate wealth, and keep it by using the tax code. Low end wage stagnation has made this possible: the very rich get richer, and everyone else stays in place. This can only lead to societal breakdown eventually. WNHNFM.ORG production
Nearly 50 million Americans lack an active ID that has their current name and address. And if they're in a state with strict voter ID laws, it likely means they can't vote. But who in America lacks photo ID and who gets squeezed out of the electorate because of it? Lauren Kunis of VoteRiders joins Marc Elias to break down these stats, myths behind noncitizens voting and more. Krystal Joy Brown is a singer, dancer and actor who made her Broadway debut in 2009 in Hair. She is best known for her portrayal of Diana Ross in the Broadway musical Motown: The Musical. Her other Broadway credits include Leap of Faith, Big Fish, and Hamilton, where she will return to the role of Eliza when the industry returns. She is also a two-time Adele and Fred Astaire nominee for best female dancer in a Broadway show. Krystal voices the character of Netossa in the DreamWorks/Netflix animated series She-Ra Princesses of Power, and her other TV appearances include the Disney film MAGIC CAMP (Disney+), NBC’s Law & Order: SUV, Hulu’s Deadbeat, ABC’s Castle, Disney’s Sydney to the Max, and most recently, Hallmark Channels "One Royal Holiday" with Aaron Tveit & Laura Osnes. Krystal is an avid activist in mental health, wellness, and social justice, and co-host’s the podcast, HOW WE DO THIS. Krystal grew up in the DC area, part of a family where many worked for the government - her mother for FEMA, her grandparents for the Pentagon, and her father as a police officer. For Krystal, being civilly and civically engaged was ingrained early on, and was always important. She recently hosted several virtual letter writing parties with VoteWriters.org, an organization that focuses on providing Voter ID assistance, which is now assisting Georgia voters for the runoff election. During our conversation Krystal illustrates how she has brought her activism to her art. While performing in Motown: The Musical, and in the streets protesting Treyvon Martin’s murder, she created a podcast called HOW WE DO THIS (a “female feminist political podcast”), which became a platform for conversations about mental health. And now, as part of the company of Hamilton, she takes an active role on the Hamilton Racial Justice Task Force. Krystal also champions self care. She opens up about going to therapy for the first time, and how it helped unlock her ability to be vulnerable onstage, and more deeply connect with audiences as Eliza Hamilton. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up in a politically active family Her reaction to the 2016 election AOC, and being “radical” Ancestral healing The Hamilton Racial Justice Task Force The importance of understanding and processing your internal life, before using it in your work onstage Connect with KJB: On the web: https://www.thekjb.com Twitter: @KrystalJoyBrown Instagram: @KrystalJoyBrown Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Today I decided to put my typical interview format to the side and instead bring to you all a special and timely bonus episode in honor of Election Day. This episode is straight real talk and pieced together based on voice texts from a handful of mom friends, so please excuse the audio quality and raw editing. In this episode, I brought on a few of my mommy friends all from various backgrounds to share what they will be doing as parents today on Election Day 2020 with their children and how they plan to talk to their children about politics, the election and what today is all about. I texted them the following 5 questions and had them respond via voice text. What is your name, kids ages and background? What are you doing with your children on Election Day? How has becoming a parent changed your views or engagement with the political arena? If your kids ask you about the election (ex. what you are doing? watching? why you’re crying? happy? etc.), what message will you give to your children? Do you have any tips, tools, resources or just advice that you would recommend to help fellow parents navigate the delicacies of political conversations, whether it be with other parents, at school, other mommy friends, etc…? Go VOTE!!! Your vote matters!!! A special shout out to Shannon Anderson from Voteriders for contributing to this episode. You can find more information to support or volunteer at Voteriders.org ----- Come join me in my sandbox of life and in this podcast to explore, play and discover something new every single week.
