Drew, Addison, and Brooke review Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals
“I remember going to my daughter's school and looking at the textbooks to see if my own name was there from many years ago.” Unfortunately, it often takes a looong time for curricular materials to evolve. Our guest Frank Stebbins told us about working with a group of teachers to make a pie graph representing all voices in their curriculum, both when THEY went to school and now in the schools they teach in, and to examine whether they mirror each other or are they different. He emphasized the importance of really focusing in on how we can include more stories that represent diverse points of view. Memoirs are particularly valuable in providing this, and Frank cited favorite memoirs like Night, Warriors Don't Cry, along with current literature by people who are defining who they are as Americans in their own voice. Without this representation, we run into the danger of identifying others with our OWN perspective on who they are rather than being able to truly learn from other perspective. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgenpolitics/message
Arizona Theatre Company’s Sean Daniels (Artistic Director) and Chanel Bragg (Associate Artistic Director) will be hanging out with Tamilla Woodard, Director of ATC’s online reading of Covenant by York Walker; and Paul Weir and Nadia Hage, organizers for the Tucson’s All Souls Procession. Tamilla Woodard, names Associate Director for Broadway’s Hadestown on March 22, is the Co-Artistic Director of Working Theater. This season her work includes American Dreams, By Leila Buck, Where We Stand by Donnetta Lavinia Grays for WP Theater and Baltimore Center Stage, Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls at American Conservatory Theater and direction and co-conception of Warriors Don’t Cry, a Co-production of The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and TheaterWorksUSA. Recently named one of 50 Women To Watch on Broadway, Tamilla is a graduate of Yale School of Drama where she also teaches. http://www.tamilla.com Partners since the 1990s in art and life, Paul Weir and Nadia Hagen are founding Board Members for the umbrella non-profit, Many Mouths One Stomach, that produces the annual All Souls Processions. Nadia was born and raised in New York and has worked as a scenic painter and toured with the notorious Tribal Industrial Project, Crash Worship. Paul grew up in New Orleans and brings a background in mountaineering, Industrial Design and Butoh Dance to his work. Nadia took over The All Souls Procession as an Artistic Director in 1996, and founded Flam Chen Pyrotechnic Theater, which Paul joined 1998. The All Souls Procession is perhaps one of the most important, inclusive and authentic public ceremonies in North America today. The Procession had its beginnings in Tucson, Arizona in 1990 with a ceremonial performance piece created by local artist Susan Johnson. The tradition now organizes for well over 150,000 participants on the streets of downtown Tucson for a two-mile long human-powered procession that ends in the ceremonial burning of a large Urn filled with the hopes, offerings and wishes of the public for those who have passed. Myriad altars, performers, installation art, and creatives of all kinds collaborate for almost half the year to prepare their offerings for this amazing event. The All Souls Procession, and now the entire All Souls Weekend, is a celebration and mourning of the lives of our loved ones and ancestors. https://allsoulsprocession.org/ Info for 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgsd3_jiBuU&feature=youtu.be Many Mouths One Stomach, a non-profit arts collective based in Tucson, AZ, is the organizing body for the Procession, and serves as a vehicle for working artists to collaborate, create, and inspire the public through Festal Culture. “Festal Culture” is the expression and fulfillment of core human needs through public celebration, ceremony, and ritual. The All Souls Procession is an event that was created to serve the public need to mourn, reflect, and celebrate the universal experience of Death, through their ancestors, loved ones, and the living. The Procession is a sanctuary for community members from all walks of life to express their grief and loss in a celebration of creative energy and rejoicing of life. With the continued cooperation of the City of Tucson, Tucson Police and Fire departments, local businesses, civic organizations, and participants like YOU — MMOS stewards the development of the parade to accommodate the growing number of participants in a healthy and harmonious way. https://manymouths.org/ #ATC #WeAreArizonaTheatreCompany #Hangandfocus #allsoulstucson #allsoulsprocession

Meredith and Kaytee are joined by Mindy today in a three-host show full of bookish delights. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host. A book club win for kids, a book train with friends, and strong opinions about a bookish movie. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. There’s some serious gushing over books in this week’s titles, plus a couple “I didn’t like this” strong opinions. Hold onto your earbuds. We are doing a brief Slow But Steady check-in this week to let you know what we’re choosing for our next reads for this challenge. For our deep dive this week, we are playing around with book pairings for TV shows that we’ve enjoyed in the past. We each chose two shows to dive deep into and then find ways to replicate some of those same feelings in our reading. What fun! Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’ve got a “very favorite” read-aloud book, one that will work, even if you’re down to the wire on a challenge category, and a book that is perfect for gift-giving. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down! *Please note that all book titles linked above are Amazon affiliate links. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Melba Pattillo Beals, Author of MARCH FORWARD,Girl From the legendary civil rights activist and author of the million-copy selling Warriors Don't Cry comes an ardent and profound childhood memoir of growing up while facing adversity in the Jim Crow South. Long before she was one of the Little Rock Nine, Melba Pattillo Beals was a warrior. Frustrated by the laws that kept African-Americans separate but very much unequal to whites, she had questions. Why couldn't she drink from a "whites only" fountain? Why couldn't she feel safe beyond home—or even within the walls of church? Adults all told her: Hold your tongue. Be patient. Know your place. But Beals had the heart of a fighter—and the knowledge that her true place was a free one. Combined with emotive drawings and photos, this memoir paints a vivid picture of Beals' powerful early journey on the road to becoming a champion for equal rights, an acclaimed journalist, a best-selling author, and the recipient of this country's highest recognition, the Congressional Gold Medal.
The Roy Green Show "Why are we still fighting certain veterans groups in court? Because they're asking for more than we are able to give right now." Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said those words during his town hall in Edmonton on Thursday. Guest: Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun columnist - Desiree is a former athlete, a mother of three and a chronic pain patient in the United States. Guest: Desiree and her husband Dave - After Markita Kaulius lost her 22-year-old daughter to a drunk driver who served next to no time in prison, she formed the national Families for Justice Organization.
