Herrlich!

Boston Marathon is probably one of my most favorite athletic events in the US. It's an opportunity for those of us who live an ordinary life, partcipate in an extra ordinary event. Running in the same path of the world's elite athletes with the best spectators yelling out your name is the most magical experience ever. Except when someone does more than an extraordinary act of running: my guest today not only ran the Boston Marathon that day, he got to save a life. Listen to his inspiring story.

We're joined on this week's Sheer Isolation by musician, model maker and ecologist, Tom Haynes, a.k.a. Grasslands. Tom tells us about how he got to tell off Jeremy Clarkson for wanting to build a pond, and how that ended up featuring on the TV star's new Amazon Prime series; Clarkson's Farm. He also talks about recording sounds in nature which he converts into samples to create songs, why he played 30 gigs in 30 days just before Covid arrived, why he's always accompanied by a toy badger and wolf hat, and why he played a gig to a field of cows. Tunes this week include one of Tom's newest tunes, and we also play a track from indie acoustic songwriter, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. In news, we discuss how the extended four week delay to restrictions has led to the cancellation of more local festivals, with one of Wiltshire's largest music weekends still hanging in the balance. This episode was created by Jon Ponting in Cricklade. Don't forget to look for us on the schedule of your local community radio station; we're on the airwaves in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset.
Lost Artists is a new occasional feature for Demo Tapes, where we shine a light on criminally under-rated artists from yesteryear - and find out what happened next for them.First up, we've got an interview with Theoretical Girl, aka Amy Sharp. TG emerged as part of the same late '00s Southend music scene as The Horrors and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, before signing to Memphis Industries and gigging everywhere from Glastonbury to Japan (and many places in between). Although her 2009 debut 'Divided' was acclaimed by music critics and fans, it would prove to be her only album release, as she stepped back from the spotlight. In our chat, Amy reminisces about the amazing '00s music scene and talks about what she's up to now - including bringing through the next generation of musicians as a piano teacher. Elsewhere in the episode, Rick raves about the best new albums that have been released this year - namely Goat Girl's sophomore album 'On All Fours' and The Orielles' film soundtrack live record thing 'La Vita Olistica' - whilst Sarah reveals why she's been listening to Metronomy's 2011 classic 'The English Riveriea' again.
