Date: December 27, 2023Name of podcast: Black Girl TheologyEpisode title and number: Ep. 6 | Let's Talk About Spiritual Disciplines Welcome back to another episode of the Black Girl Theology podcast. In this season, we have been talking about the basic fundamental principles of Christianity and theology. In the next season, we are going to talk about what it's like going through seasons of transition, and how hard, heartbreaking, and healing that can be. I'll be bringing on a few of my favorite Black girls to discuss how transition has been showing up in their lives as well. But, in today's episode we are going to be talking about spiritual disciplines. Up until this point, we have discussed the Bible and how it came to be. In the last episode, we talked about salvation and the process of sanctification and justification. And in that episode, we described sanctification as the process by which Christians are set apart for God from the rest of the world, or the process by which Christians are made holy (this is otherwise known as spiritual maturity and it happens over the lifetime of a Christian). The only way for us to grow in maturity over our lifetime is to continue in our spiritual disciplines. So we're going to dive into what those are today.Black Girl Theologian of the WeekThis week's BGT is Jackie Hill Perry. Jackie is a Bible teacher, writer, and artist. What does it look like to practice revival and holiness in our personal lives? What should we do if we feel jaded about the idea of revival? And how can we imagine God's law as a way for us to understand who God is? On a new Losing Our Religion episode of The Russell Moore Podcast, Moore and author, poet, Bible teacher, and recording artist Jackie Hill Perry explore the answers to these questions. Moore and Perry talk about what it means to be holy and how Christians can pursue holiness in a tech-driven society. Perry shares her story of coming to know the Lord and the influence of the Scriptures on her poetry and spoken word. And she and Moore discuss the definition of revival, how revival is described in the Bible, and how we might think about revival in our era. This special series of episodes around Russell Moore's newest book, Losing Our Religion: An Altar Call for Evangelical America, explores the Christian faith in confusing times. Your kids cannot go into a public restroom these days, turn on the television, go to school, or play high school or collegiate sports without being confronted with the question of sexuality. Who defines it? Our politicians, our celebrities, our educators, our feelings… or God? This is the most relevant cultural issue of our day. The question of sexuality goes to the very core of who we are as human beings. Are we made in our own image according to our own feelings, or are we made in God's image according to His design? In this first episode of a four-part series on sexuality, Catherine digs into what God has to say about our sexuality. We need to be having discussions with our kids about this topic because the world is. Our voice needs to be a trusted source of truth for our kids to navigate the dangerous secular landmine of their sexual identity. Joining Catherine for this vitally important discussion is Erin Barry, an author, speaker, counselor, and educational consultant. Erin has an M.A. in counseling and works professionally as both a counselor and consultant, and she is working on her doctorate in counseling where she is specializing in the field of sexuality. Erin and her husband Brett have founded the “The Home Educated Mind,” a Christ-centered community dedicated to providing materials and support for Christian parents. When the love of truth outweighs our love of people, we've missed the mark. In part three of our series on Biblical Sexuality, we talk through how to speak truth in love, what makes conversations around the topic hard on both sides and how the church has historically gotten it wrong when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community. Books and podcasts mentioned in today's episode are: Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was and Who God Has Always Been by Jackie Hill Perry and Theology In The Raw, episode 920 by Preston Sprinkle.

Pride month just wrapped up. Favorite children's shows are featuring LGBTQ content. School curricula, corporate policies, and legislation are swiftly changing. Many parents wonder how to navigate conversations about all of this with their children of all ages. Of course conversations with our kids begin with conversations with ourselves. We have to ask what we really believe, on what we base our convictions, and how to pass the truth on to our children. On this episode of All Things we talk through some foundational reminders about the character and goodness of our God, his design and mercy in creation, his trustworthiness as our Maker and Savior, and his good, beautiful, and true words, which hold out life to you and me and to our children. As culture quickly changes, our God does not. We can anchor ourselves to him and share his words of life with others. He is not anxious, nor do we need be. He is sovereign and kind and able to minister to us and through us, as well as our children, and all those we love and work with and live with. In this cultural moment it's easy to feel embarrassed, awkward, or apologetic for a Biblical sexual ethic. But the warm and hard words of Jesus have been a light in the dark forever and that's not changing now. Christian, as you hold out grace and truth, you hold out life. Speak life to your kids, to yourself, and to those in your sphere. The discussion around homosexual marriage is nothing if not divisive in our day. And today we are tackling the topic of homosexual weddings — specifically, is it sinful for a Christian to attend a homosexual wedding? Is it an issue of sin or a matter of conscience? It is possible to attend a celebration of something many Christians believe to be sinful in a way that displays love and grace to people without condoning or encouraging sin? This week, Peter, Aaron, and guest-hosts Adam Powers and Nate Currin talk about attending homosexual weddings, how Christians are called to engage with the LGBTQ+ community, and, as always, what the Bible has to say about these topics. “In our day, love has come to mean affirmation. And that's not even a philosophical definition, let alone a biblical one. We can't affirm any pattern of sin, even the ‘acceptable' ones. And that's an important distinction to make. We can truly love someone without affirming behavior that is anti-biblical.” ~ Aaron Currin Guest Hosts Adam Powers Nate Currin Links Watch Out of Oz on YouTube SonRise Community Church The Deadly Se7en Sermon Series Romans 1 Is God anti-gay? by Sam Allberry Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was, and Who God Has Always Been by Jackie Hill Perry The Gospel Coalition Rosaria Butterfield The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution by Carl Trueman Subscribe Out of Oz Podcast Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts Stay in touch BLDG 28 Church BLDG 28 on Facebook BLDG 28 on Instagram BLDG 28 on YouTube

On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (07/29/20), we pick up where we ended on our previous broadcast and present more of an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank is talking with writer, poet, and artist, Jackie Hill Perry, author of Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was, and Who God Has Always Been. Hank and Jackie discuss the error of what Jackie calls the heterosexual gospel—believing that only a fraction of our humanity needs saving; the different ways we identify ourselves; Jackie's reaction to a negative review of Gay Girl, Good God on Amazon; learning to see ourselves through the lens of Scripture rather than through the lens of culture; how sin can feel natural; and the role of the church to impact society and the importance of discipleship in the church.
On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (07/28/20), we present an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank's guest is writer, poet, and artist, Jackie Hill Perry, author of Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was, and Who God Has Always Been. Hank and Jackie discuss what made Jackie go against the cultural perspective of sexuality in favor of a biblical perspective; the power of words and narratives; how personal autonomy relates to the issues of abortion, sexual freedom, and sexual identity; the impact of abuse and fatherlessness; the role of conscience in our lives as a reminder of truth; and the error of what Jackie calls the heterosexual gospel—believing that only a fraction of our humanity needs saving.
Jackie Hill Perry delivered a message during a breakout session at The Gospel Coalition’s 2019 National Conference titled “Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was and Who God Has Always Been” based on her book by the same name. In it, she addresses same-sex attraction through her own story couched within the larger story of God. She encourages listeners to trust that that the simplicity of the gospel message—even when it seems to bear no fruit—can and does lead people out of sin and into a life that glorifies God. She calls the church to think holistically and frame the work of loving and serving same-sex attracted people in the fullness of the gospel. Simply love those in need of the gospel and help them understand it in its simplest form—Jesus loves you and died for your sins.

1. I figured if I cowered away from this topic then I would be feeding into the taboo nature this topic has become. a. My heart goes out to all in the LGBTQ community for how the Church has forsaken love for self-righteous judgement. b. I do not claim to have all the answers or understand completely what it means to be attracted to the same sex, but what we have is God's Word and what he has/is intending for his people.2. Context a. Leviticus 18:22 & Leviticus 20:13 i. Sounds harsh but God was setting his people apart from the surrounding nations. b. There is a great contemporary linguistic debate going on over the origins and proper meaning of arsenokoitai, the Greek word Paul uses in 1 Corinthians 6:9 and 1 Timothy 1:10. i. Most scholars believe Paul, an educated Jew writing to Gentiles, was reinforcing what was instructed in Leviticus. c. Both Jesus and Paul make no attempt to nullify ‘man lying with man'. In fact, Christ would take the law even further to express humanity's need for a savior and the grace that was coming from his death/resurrection (Matthew 5:28).3. My issues with the argument a. Christians think it is a sin set apart from other sins b. LGBTQ community argues that because it is how they were born or wired, and its true love how can it be a sin? i. Born with certain inclinations does not justify the action ii. Using “love” as justification iii. Mark 8:34-384. Not to glorify God as God is in effect, not to glorify him at all… a. Jeremiah 29:13 b. Psalm 119:97-104 c. 1 John 5:35. Dorena’s books, Colorfull, Thoughtfull, and Gracefull, take big things like skin color, living with special needs, and homelessness and breaks them down into verbiage that communicates to the heart of children the gift of God’s unique design of His Kingdom, practicing compassion, and sharing blessings with others. What’s even more beautiful about them though, is that they speak to the hearts of adults. These books have become staples in our home in helping equip our children, and ourselves, with more kind and compassionate words about our friends and neighbors who do not look or live like us. Dorena’s voice has played a significant role in a journey God has brought me on to see our world with fresh eyes, and let me just say that on the other side of this conversation with her, I am not the same, and I am grateful. Dorena created such a grace filled space for me to ask questions, learn and stretch what I’ve always known. There are so many incredible take-aways about how God calls us to deny ourselves, embrace discomfort, to pursue humility and never stop learning for the sake of unifying the body of Christ. We go so deep and so wide in this conversation, it actually will come to you in two parts! So pull up a chair, friend and join us for part 1.Let’s press in. Let’s be willing to do some possibly uncomfortable and humbling work. It is worthy work to ask God to open our eyes to see the people He made more clearly. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT). On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Jackie Hill Perry about same-sex attraction, identity, and the Christian life. We talked about everything from how we can engage people in a homosexual lifestyle with the gospel to how our identity as believers is literally transformed by the gospel. I think my favorite part of this conversation may have been when Jackie and I got real about what it’s like to study the Word and grow in our theology as mamas to little, tiny people. Overall, our conversation is just rich with gospel-centered encouragement. I’m telling you guys, Jackie brought the heat! So you’ll know her a little better, Jackie Hill Perry is a writer, poet, and artist whose work has been featured in places like the Washington Times, The 700 Club, Desiring God, The Gospel Coalition, and many others.
