In our kick off of the 2022 season, co-hosts Mike and Amy talk with author Dorena Williamson about her new book, Crowned with Glory.  The narrative around Black hair hasn't always been a celebratory one. In fact, Black women and girls have faced hair discrimination everywhere, from schools to the workplace to the Olympic Games. In CROWNED WITH GLORY (on sale 1/25/22; WaterBrook), bestselling author Dorena Williamson flips this harmful narrative on its head by telling a beautiful story of self-love, affirmation, and God's love for His unique creations that will inspire children of color and enlighten people of all ethnicities.  Through the story of Azira, a young Black girl full of spirit and talent, Williamson highlights the Black hair experience—from combing out big hair and visiting the salon to wearing a satin hair wrap for bed and braiding hair to swim. As Azira rocks her God-given beauty and expresses her uniqueness with fun hairstyles, she grows in confidence and experiences the joy of self-love.  Written in bold and lyrical verse, Williamson draws on scriptures such as 1 Corinthians 11:15 (“…if a woman has long hair, it is her glory”) and Psalm 8:5 (“You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor”) to offer this ode to Black hair and Black girl joy.  Illustrated by Shellene Rodney, this delightful resource is ideal for children ages 4-8 and their adults who enjoy stories that celebrate diversity and positive self-image. After reading Crowned with Glory, young readers will be empowered to always embrace and love exactly who God created them to be.  Dorena Williamson is a speaker, bestselling writer, church planter, and bridge builder whose work has been featured in Christianity Today and Crosswalk. She writes stories that celebrate all colors, build cultural bridges, and motivate lasting change for children and their parents. Williamson's previous titles include ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull. She and her husband, Chris, have four children. Visit her website at www.dorenawilliamson.com.

Today, we are going to talk more about unpacking the gift of Emmanuel, God with us, with one of my absolute favorite people, Dorena Williamson. Exactly one hundred episodes ago, Dorena became a part of the simply stories life. She's a children's book author, a writer, a pastor's wife and incredible preacher herself whose passion for God's people and pursuing Biblically diverse unity in the body of Christ has impacted so many people, including myself, and my family. Her books provide verbiage for examining the language we use about our fellow image bearers and modeling those things to our children so that we can better love and serve like Jesus. We talk about what that looks like in this season, the incredible sacrifice of Christ's coming at Christmas, and so much more. Looking back on what all you'll get to hear in this episode, I just am personally remembering these few takeaways from this conversation: -The call to portray a gospel-centered view of others when we give and serve others around the holidays. That we don't place ourselves higher than others, we just learn how to see and engage felt needs in the communities where we live, and love and serve them like a true neighbor. One major way we can do this is by carefully choosing our words and offering a perspective for our children that shows care for others; those that we are serving are or who we may see that are struggling are also part of the body of Christ. -Pressing into uncomfortable conversations with the children in our lives about what they are inevitably going to encounter or have already encountered with a Gospel centered perspective. Dorena reminds us so beautifully “we are the people of God, we can do this,” And whether its about how we treat others, skin color, sex, friends who have different abilities or a whole long list of other things happening in life, if we don't engage with our children about these things, something or someone will. The Lord will equip us, and He will meet us in it.  -We break down a good bit of the conversation with Jesus around the story of the Good Samaritan and the heart behind the question “who is my neighbor?” I'm still processing who are my neighbors because the Lord has put them in my path, not because they're the most comfortable people I feel prepared to connect with, but because the Lord saw fit to place them and me for such a time as this. Will I say yes? This is such a rich conversation, and I cannot wait for you to hear it. I hope and pray that wherever you are, you find new ways to experience Emmanuel, God with us. I pray that we all choose to press into His presence, and choose to grow because of the light He shines in the dark. God's not finished with any of us. You matter, friend. And your story matters. Dorena Williamson's journey to becoming a writer was an unexpected one and began when she as a mom noticed a dearth of literature that offered the representation for her Black children. And if she did find books that featured characters of color, the faith element was missing. So she began praying, "God, how can you use me to have an impact in this area of addressing race and colorblindness?" The answer to this prayer was that Dorena became a children's author, starting with her 2018 book ColorFull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us. She is now one of the featured authors in the inaugural year of IVP Kids with her newest book The Celebration Place   which offers a captivating vision of the church as God intended. You will love hearing from this delightful, faithful writer who has had to push against everything from imposter syndrome to apathy about racial issues in the industry, and in so doing has created books that both children and adults can treasure. About the Guest:Dorena Williamson has a passion for all children to hear the message of God's diverse kingdom. She writes children's books that adults also enjoy and is the author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull. Today we have on children's minister, author, and founder of Little Shoots, Deep Roots, Christie Thomas. Christie is a woman who is passionate about equipping families to engage their hearts with the Gospel. Her children's books give amazing verbiage for how to deal with big issues in the lives of children, which is so helpful in general, but especially now living in a season that is full of such uncertainty that our children experience in their worlds too. Christie's latest book is a Mother Son Prayer Journal. As a mother of several young boys, Christie shares about the challenge of raising young men to be God chasers who practice repentance, humility, strength, respect for others, how to go to God with the good things and the bad things, and remembering God is the One who is faithful and who holds all things together. Christie's method in all she does in her ministry and her writing is to take things back to small steps that sow Truth. In a world where we as adults are often trying to find quick ways to handle more, this is such a good reminder to slow down, and focus on the small, but mighty. While we're doing that, we can more clearly see it's God that holds all things together and we can point the kids in our lives to do the same. One of my biggest takeaways from talking with Christie was just how much little habits make a huge difference in so many aspects of life, but especially in parenting and communicating about the Gospel.  We also dive into how men and women can partner in spiritually leading and nurturing a home. Christie points out that as Christians we are called to make disciples. As followers of Christ and parents; that includes our children. We discuss what discipleship from both parents may look like in a manner that honors God, and compliments how every parent and every partnership is uniquely and wonderfully made. I hope this will be an encouraging episode for those of us out there trying to figure out how to respond to the world around us as adults, let alone how to communicate about it with littles, but ultimately I hope this helps point you to Jesus, and remind you He is trustworthy no matter where you are. You matter. Your story matters.  ---  Connecting with Christie: Facebook Instagram // LSDR Instagram Website Episode Sponsor: Hopefuel  Use the code SIMPLY15 at check out for 15% off your purchase Store (Affiliate link) Facebook Instagram References: Little Shoots, Deep Roots Wise for Salvation  Quinn's Promise Rock Quinn Says Goodbye Momma Son Prayer Journal The Bible Recap - Book and Podcast John Mark's mother's home is the house where people were gathered when people were praying for Peter, also possibly where the last supper was held  Building Faith at Home The original form of Proverbs 31 is an acrostic poem  Erin Moon's response to the funky woman tweet  The Bible Binge How you can start little from her website  “Raise A Hallelujah” - Bethel “I Thank God” Maverick City Music  Trillia Newbell's childrens' books: God's Very Good Idea and Creative God, Colorful Us Dorena Williamson's books: Colorfull, Thoughtfull, Gracefull, Pre-Orders!: The Celebration Place and Crowned with Glory The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross - Carl Laferton Phil Vischer videos  VeggieTales Right Now Media  When a student followed a rabbi, they followed them so closely “The Chosen” Scripture: Colossians 1:17- God holds all things together Job 1:21- God gives and takes away  John 11:38-44- Jesus at Lazarus' tomb  Luke 18:18-30, 1 Corinthians 13:12-, Ephesians 2:6-9, 1 Timothy 6:18-19-  The kingdom is only partly here Psalm 27:13-14, Job 13:15, Daniel 3:17-18, Romans 8:28 -When everything hurts God is still good  Isaiah 41:10, Hebrews 13:5-6, Psalm 23-God is still near Psalm 34:10, Matthew 7:11, Luke 12:24, John 14:26,  1 Corinthians 10:13, 2 Corinthians 9:8, Philippians 4:19- God is still providing John 16:33, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Psalm 23 -God comforts us Psalm 30:1-5, Psalm 30:11-12- Joy does come in the mourning  Isaiah 40:11- carries a lamb on his shoulders  1 and 2 Samuel - life of David (Bible Project's video on these books are super helpful) 1 and 2 Chronicles - life of David (Bible Project's video on these books are super helpful) The Psalms (Bible Project)  1 Samuel 17- David & Goliath  Amos (Bible Project again ;)) 1 Chronicles 13- David tries to go get the ark and it doesn't go well  1 Samuel 18-30- especially 27-29- David the land pirate (bad news bears)  1 Samuel 13:14,Acts 13:22 - God calls David to be a man after His own heart  Proverbs 22:6, Romans 10:14-15, Titus 2:3,  I have to learn to help them recognize His voice  1 Corinthians 11:3-16, Ephesians 5:21-33- The man is head of the household  Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8, 2 Timothy 2:2- We're called to make disciples 2 Timothy 1:5- Lois and Eunice and Timothy  Acts 12:1-17- Peter escapes prison and comes to believers praying 1 Kings 11:1-2- Do not marry a Moabite woman. Dorena Williamson is a bridge builder, speaker, writer, and worship leader who knows the power and beauty of racial awareness. She and her husband, Dr. Chris Williamson, planted Strong Tower Bible Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and have spent more than twenty years ministering to its richly diverse faith community. Dorena and Chris have four children. Why be colorblind when we can be colorFULL instead? Imani and Kayla are the best of friends who are learning to celebrate their different skin colors. As they look around them at the amazing colors in nature, they can see that their skin is another example of God's creativity! This joyful story takes a new approach to discussing race: instead of being colorblind, we can choose to celebrate each color God gave us and be colorFULL instead.

Today my conversation is with children’s book author, activist, and just generally amazing woman of God, Dorena Williamson. Dorena’s books, Colorfull, Thoughtfull, and Gracefull, take big things like skin color, living with special needs, and homelessness and breaks them down into verbiage that communicates to the heart of children the gift of God’s unique design of His Kingdom, practicing compassion, and sharing blessings with others. What’s even more beautiful about them though, is that they speak to the hearts of adults. These books have become staples in our home in helping equip our children, and ourselves, with more kind and compassionate words about our friends and neighbors who do not look or live like us.  Dorena’s voice has played a significant role in a journey God has brought me on to see our world with fresh eyes, and let me just say that on the other side of this conversation with her, I am not the same, and I am grateful. Dorena created such a grace filled space for me to ask questions, learn and stretch what I’ve always known. There are so many incredible take-aways about how God calls us to deny ourselves, embrace discomfort,  to pursue humility and never stop learning for the sake of unifying the body of Christ.  We go so deep and so wide in this conversation, it actually will come to you in two parts!  So pull up a chair, friend and join us for part 1.Let’s press in. Let’s be willing to do some possibly uncomfortable and humbling work. It is worthy work to ask God to open our eyes to see the people He made more clearly. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT). Becky is an active and healthy person, so she assumed pregnancy and birth would come easily to her. Instead, she was met with many complications and challenges that forced her to slow down and take it easy as she was on modified bed rest and medicated until she made it to 36 weeks. Becky experienced prodromal labor and daily contractions for the last 8 weeks of her pregnancy. When her son was finally born at 39 weeks, he came very quickly.  In the immediate post-partum at the hospital, she experienced a severe post-partum hemorrhage and lost 3/4 of her blood supply because her cervix was torn during birth. The postpartum recovery was challenged by a lack of support after almost losing her life during birth. She found that people asked about the baby, but not about her and she had to return to work 6.5 weeks after giving birth. As you can imagine, she was still very much healing physically and mentally. Yes, a lot happened. Becky women are strong, and Becky is able to resource how resilient and strong she was during her son's birth. I have love for folks of alllll Enneagram types for different reasons, but put 2 sevens together and WEEEEEE, you get one hell of an energetic conversation. I first met PaQuita Pullen when we briefly overlapped working in residential mental health treatment, and she's now well on her way to getting her doctorate in Counselor Supervision and Education, while teaching yoga with YMCA and Small World Yoga and taking breaks to get her Marvel fix. PaQuita is a pint-sized spitfire with a smile that lights up the whole damn room. She is not here to take anyone's shit— and yet, she is graceFULL and receptive to peoples' (at times less-than-sensitive) questions around race, leaning into opportunities to help others see their blind spots and gain greater cultural awareness. (Hell, she was kind and patient with my fumbling for "the right" words a few times during the interview.) She is exactly the kind of person you want helping counseling grad students navigate the sticky, important questions around racial and cultural humility. In this interview, PaQuita and I go deep with these issues, including her dissertation focus around the misdiagnosis of depression in African American males, lack of representation in yoga, how her love for superheroes (#teammarvel) relates to her deeper passions, and a lot more. A word on semantics (see what I did there?!): In our conversation, PaQuita uses the terms 'African American' and 'person of color' (POC); so while some other folks may prefer the term 'black,' I stick with her chosen terms in this description and in the interview to honor the identification and preferences of the INDIVIDUAL I'm talking with. #culturalhumility Head over here for full show notes including links to stuff we discuss in the episode. And don't forget to take 30 seconds to leave a review right here from your phone to help more people discover this podcast — thank you so much! About PaQuita Pullen, MA PaQuita is a Registered Yoga Instructor and currently completing her licensure as a Professional Counselor and doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision. She is passionate about connectedness, authenticity and all things love. In addition to her counseling roles, she is working hard to further develop her yoga business, One Love Yoga Nashville, and plans to establish a private practice that primarily serves African American males experiencing mental health symptoms and issues within the 2019 calendar year. PaQuita aspires to be a trailblazer as a future counselor educator and supervisor in the betterment of mental health treatment and services for individuals of racial/ethnic identity.

New Hope UMC Sunday Sermon Podcast

This Sunday, October 28, we continue our sermon series “A Grace-Full Life.” God’s grace comes to us in four movements: “Even There, Even Now, Even More, and Even Then;” that is, prevenient grace, justifying grace, sanctifying grace, and glorifying grace. It all about living out our God’s all-reaching, soul-saving, character-shaping, never-ending love. We look this week at Sanctifying Grace, which is the way God grows and shapes us once we have stepped over the line of faith in Jesus Christ in Justifying Grace. To be better prepared read Romans 6:22, 7:18–20, 24–25, 8:1–2; John 17:17, Hebrews 12:10b, 1 Peter 2:1–3 Sanctifying Grace is the “Even More” work of the Holy Spirit to root out sin- anything that misses the mark of God’s full intention for our lives. God imputes righteousness to us in Justifying Grace and God imparts righteousness to us in Sanctifying Grace through a process over time. Justifying Grace is what Christ did for us. Sanctifying Grace is what God does in us now. This series is inspired from twenty-three years as first lady of Nashville's Strong Tower Bible Church, a multiracial faith community Dorena and her husband Dr. Chris planted in 1995. Dorena and her husband have four wonderful children. Dorena and I start off the show talking about how a move to Nashville to further her husband Chris' rap career, ended up leading them to found a multi-racial church in a civil war rich town! Dorena  shares how she had no idea that God would use all her years raising kids and leading worship to combine her passions and experiences into something bigger down the road. When we're itching to jump to the finish line because we want to know where God is leading us, Dorena encourages cultivating faithfulness, and describes how this can bring renewal of faith. Dorena and I then discuss the importance and value of having honest conversations about race, and recognizing the diversity of colors God created vs. being "colorblind".  We also talk about how we as parents should be the first voices to talk about race with our kids, and the different ways we can make this happen. Not only do we get to hear the story of two home water births, but its a treat to hear sisters share their perspective on the same experiences. Before Erin gave birth to her son, she didn’t spend a lot of time worrying about breastfeeding. Once he was born, however, they experienced their share of difficulties. She and her son had a long labor, and her milk took a long time to come in, after days of a mysterious fever. When it did come in, only one side was producing due to leftover scar tissue from a 15-year old piercing, and one bad latch resulted in painful blisters which made breastfeeding impossible for a week. Low supply meant she started supplementing with formula from day 3, and although she had wanted to breastfeed exclusively, she did what she had to, and Erin and her husband were glad to provide their little boy with much-needed sustenance when her body couldn’t.   Despite a rocky start they were able to breastfeed for 9 months, and for some of that time she was able to feed fully from one breast.  This is a special edition of Big Birth Junkie that coincides with the artwork of Judy Chicago's Birth Project Born Again Series at the Pasadena Museum and relates to her piece: Birth Garment Amazon.  _________ For more information to go: GraceFull or follow us: @gracefullbirth or our guest: Erin Battles on Facebook __________ This episode is sponsored by GraceFull where you can find BBJ's host Elizabeth's free ebook: Birth Planning: All the Questions to Ask and all kinds of educational videos including Childbirth Education, Advanced Doula Trainings and Lactation Support.  If you live in Los Angeles, check out our midwives for home births, water birth, and our accredited birthing center. Renee first noticed she had stretch marks when she was 14 and remembers thinking “Does this mean I’m ugly? Are people going to think I’m ugly?” After the birth of her children, she was ashamed, embarrassed, and often felt that she had ruined herself because of her loose skin and stretch marks. It was her Auntie Loody and her friends who gave her the courage to accept her baby marks. Renne and I talked quite a bit over the phone (and please accept my apologies for a sometimes challenging connection) about stretch marks, being a teen mom, yoga and body acceptance.  This is a special edition of Big Birth Junkie that coincides with the artwork of Judy Chicago's Birth Project Born Again Series at the Pasadena Museum and relates to her piece: Birth Garment - Flowering Schrub.  _________ For more information to go: GraceFull or follow us: @gracefullbirth or our guest: @iamreneewatkins __________ This episode is sponsored by GraceFull where you can find BBJ's host Elizabeth's free ebook: Birth Planning: All the Questions to Ask and all kinds of educational videos including Childbirth Education, Advanced Doula Trainings and Lactation Support.  If you live in Los Angeles, check out our midwives for home births, water birth, and our accredited birthing center.
