On stage, in written music, online and in person: what is the artist going for? Realness or entertainment? It doesn't seem that simple. There are many examples of artists who do both very well and I think the best art is created at the intersection of the two. There is no question: it's hard to pull off. Ready to hear the difference between Spruce and Mahogany guitars? Same builder, similar models, but different tonewoods — which one would you choose?  I'm beyond excited for today's Acoustic Tuesday episode. We have a special treat as we dive into the world of Thompson Guitars, handcrafted in Sisters, Oregon. This time, we'll be comparing two absolutely incredible guitars from their lineup: the Thompson DC-MA and the Thompson MAD-ADI. Grab your pick, sit back, and get ready for a tonal adventure! The first guitar I'll be showcasing is the Thompson DCMA. This mahogany dreadnought beauty boasts deep and dark tones that will make your ears swoon. I'll be sharing my thoughts on the build quality, playability, and how that mahogany goodness provides a rich and resonant sound that'll leave you craving more. Next up is the Thompson MAD-ADI, crafted from Adirondack spruce. This guitar is the perfect contrast to the DC-MA, offering a much brighter and lighter tone. I'll delve into what makes the Adirondack spruce so special, and how its unique properties contribute to the guitar's overall sound and projection. Throughout the episode, I'll be playing both of these incredible instruments side by side, so you can hear the distinct differences in their tonal qualities. I'm excited to share my insights and help you decide which one might be the right fit for your playing style and taste. We'll also cover two fundraisers that are very near and dear to me. Please consider donating to make sure these musicians' lives are honored properly. The first documentary is called ORACLE: The Life & Music of Michael Hedges. It's hard to not fall a little in love with Willi Carlisle. The former high school football captain is irresistible on stage and on record. He grew up an outsider and the feeling remains in his adult life. In writing about his intense life, he's found an outlet and in his music we, the others, feel seen. His history is filled with complex experiences like having a musician father, singing in punk bands, getting a masters in poetry and finding true home and community at square dances in the Ozarks.I got Willi to talk about a couple of notable contradictions in his life including his unflinching willingness to lay it all out for his music living alongside not trusting himself and believing that he can do this. He also loves high-brow poetry and punk rock, but "I don't want to come across as too heady, but I also don't want to be so punk rock that I lack polish." We talk about those contradictions and, of course, the music. His new album, Peculiar, Missouri, is filled with songs that seem very hopeful and these songs, even the protest songs, are coming from a place of love. Willi's not reached a state of queer joy, which he'll freely tell you, but he's working on it. Meanwhile, his honesty, curiosity and big heart have us hooked.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Hey Folks! I'm so pleased to share the 3rd act of this “Sitting In” miniseries with you, none other than the inimitable Willi Carlisle. A multi-faceted writer, performer, and instrumentalist, Willi has spent the last several years collecting folklore, playing or calling square dances, and working in the avant-garde. He's a folksinger with a style forged in the fire of Ozark old-time, and has a masters degree in Poetry. He's spent years in the woods with poets and old folk singers and he's a queer-identifying storyteller whose musical stories hoot, stomp, and saunter through joys and troubles uniquely southern and timelessly true. He's equally comfortable on banjo, accordion, fiddle, and guitar, and has earned accolades for his versatility with performances in the UK, Canada, and across the USA, appearing with acts like Dom Flemons, Mary Gauthier, Los Texmaniacs and more. The Washington Post said that: "Carlisle has a poetry in describing songs passed down through generations as a most precious cultural commodity, and a passion and immediacy in performing them. Both down home and brainy, [Willi] is worth seeking out." The following is classic Willi. Short stories of the Ozarks told over a collection of sounds and from Willi's pocket, followed by a talking' blues piece called “Peculiar, Missouri”. Enjoy! This week, a collection of exceptional Ozark original singer-songwriters recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these canorous poets. Folk songs don’t just materialize out of thin air and they don’t grow on trees. They’re conceived and written by regular people to express their feelings, their experiences and their culture. Nowhere is the tradition more alive than in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri. Join us, as we present a small sampling of true contemporary Ozark original singer-songwriters creating brand new folk music for these modern times. Featured on this episode of Ozark Highlands Radio are: Buffalo Gals band member Melissa Carper of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; Mountain View, Arkansas’ own Carolyn Carter; Batesville, Arkansas native and Creek Rocks band member Cindy Woolf; Mountain View resident and Ozark Folk Center regular, Grace Stormont; Taller Than You band member and hammered dulcimer champion, Mineral Point, Missouri’s Ben Haguewood; Buffalo Gals band member and award winning fiddler, Eureka Springs, Arkansas’ Rebecca Patek; Traveling minstrel and multi-instrumentalist Willi Carlisle of Fayetteville, Arkansas. This week, Ozark old time duo “Old Ties” performs live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with the members of this eclectic duo, Allison Williams & Willi Carlisle. Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Walter Gosser playing the traditional tune “Cripple Creek.” Author, folklorist, and songwriter Charley Sandage presents a piece on the uniquely American art form of shape note singing. Allison Williams and Willi Carlisle were brought together by a passion for old-time music. The duo is best known around these parts as the leaders of monthly square dances at various hotspots throughout Northwest Arkansas. When they aren’t calling dances, Williams and Carlisle gig as “Old Ties.” A native of the Arkansas Ozarks, Allison Williams got her start as a punk rock musician before rediscovering her musical roots. Several years in the mountains of North Carolina educated her in Appalachian banjo techniques, especially the fast distinctive styles of Hobart Smith and Wade Ward. Allison has toured internationally, sharing stages with Rhonda Vincent, Donna the Buffalo, and many other giants of the new roots music scene. Her solo CD ”Give Me the Roses” came out in the autumn of 2008, featuring driving arrangements of traditional old-time songs as well as eclectic originals, woven together by a talented backing band of rising stars: alumni of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Old Crow Medicine Show, and the Wiyos, among others. Since then, Allison has toured internationally, playing to a sold-out Barbican Hall in London as part of the BBC’s “Folk America” special, and backing folk legend Michelle Shocked on her 2010 East Coast tour. Willi Carlisle has, according to one reviewer, "an authenticity it takes some songwriters years to achieve." After years of collecting folklore, playing or calling square dances, and working in the avant-garde, Willi Carlisle is a multi-faceted writer, performer and instrumentalist. With a style forged in the fire of Ozark oldtime and an ever-growing collection of antique musics, Carlisle’s multi-instrumental stories hoot, stomp, and saunter through joys and troubles uniquely Southern and timelessly true. Equally comfortable on banjo, fiddle and guitar, Carlisle has earned accolades for his versatility with performances at the Ozark Folk Center, the Fayetteville Roots Festival, Thacker Mountain Radio, and Fringe Festivals across the country.   In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Walter Gosser playing the traditional tune “Cripple Creek,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives.
