Yannis and the Yaw nasceu da admiração do vocalista do Foals, Yannis Philippakis, pelo icônico baterista e compositor franco-nigeriano Tony Allen. Frontman with one of Britain's biggest modern rock bands, Yannis Philippakis recently launched Yannis & The Yaw – not so much a solo project, more of an experiment in collaboration. Dial back seven years and Yannis spent time writing songs with one of his heroes, the icon drummer Tony Allen – godfather of Afrobeat and distinguished collaborator with everyone from Damon Albarn to Air. The result is a posthumous project – Allen died in 2020 – titled ‘Lagos Paris London' released in August 2024.  Yannis goes deep with host Greg Cochrane about his “cross generational” bond with Allen, and the other legendary artists he'd love write with Yannis & The Yaw. Plus, he discusses the evolving future of his band Foals, chats about his passion for gardening and why he's writing music for some contemporary theatre productions.  You can watch clips of the podcast online now, just give us a follow on Instagram @midnightchatspod. In this episode we welcome heavy metal expert Deborah Frost, Zooming in from her native New York City, and invite her to talk about her career as a writer and musician.Deborah reminisces about the all-girl "female Dolls" Flaming Youth, in which she drummed in the early '70s, and then explains how she came to write her first pieces for Circus in 1977. She talks about her love of hard rock and heavy metal, and about contributing to Rolling Stone and the Village Voice — including her acclaimed 1985 Voice piece 'White Noise: How Heavy Metal Rules', with its unflattering descriptions of the drug-and-groupie-addled Mötley Crüe.From the Crüe we segue into another great "umlaut" metal band, one beloved of Deborah's co-hosts Barney, Martin & Jasper. Yep, we're talking about Blue Öyster Cult, to whose drummer Albert Bouchard our guest was once married. After Barney & Martin attempt to do justice to what made the Cult so uniquely brilliant, we hear clips from 1978 audio interviews with the group's Allen Lanier& Eric Bloom, while Deborah talks about the "rock-critical" role played in the BÖC's development by Sandy Pearlman, R(ichard) Meltzer & punk poetess Patti Smith. An abrupt shift takes us into the amazing world of Grace Jones and her curation of the 2022 Meltdown festival in London. Guest and hosts alike celebrate the iconic Jamaican transgressor, focusing particularly on the Island albums she made at Chris Blackwell's Compass Point studios in the early '80s. Deborah also dumbfounds us with a story about getting naked in a New York sauna with Grace and her beefy boyfriend Dolph Lundgren. There's bonus audio in the form of Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis, talking in 2015 to Coup De Main's Pip Williams. Ya puedes ver el Visual #10 de The Yellow Melodies --> "Sitting in my room". Kendrick Lamar lanza nuevo álbum, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.

For musician and poet Arlo Parks, 2020 was set to be massive. Festivals, a US tour. Then the world shifted. Her gigs were postponed, festivals cancelled. We watched Glastonbury's empty fields from our sofas where Arlo played, but only for the cows. So instead, she did gigs online, put out new tracks to wide critical acclaim, wrote new music and published poetry on social media. Her thoughtful, intimate music has been the soundtrack to many people's life in lockdown. But still, live performing is on hold. Her fans, once singing her lyrics back at her at shows, feel very far away. She left a bit of her heart out there, on the road. The Coronavirus pandemic has struck a huge blow to everyone involved in the music industry. While the world gets back to some kind of normal, Arlo explores what the psychological effect will be of a world with - for now - no live music in it. She asks other artists she admires like poet and hip-hop artist Kojey Radical, Ed O'Brien from Radiohead, Yannis Philippakis from the band Foals and indie singer songwriter Phoebe Bridgers, how they've dealt with the void. How have they managed the impact on their creative process and where do the silver linings lie? She asks them what lasting impact this time will have on their live performances once the world's venues are open for business again. And she connects with her fans, the people she can't wait to get back to see in the flesh, down in the auditorium. Presented by Arlo Parks. Produced by Clare Salisbury for BBC Audio in Bristol. Currently number 1 with their new record, we welcomed the wonderful Foals front man Yannis through our doors. We celebrate the band's marriage, talk a LOT about Greece and his Greek Jewish heritage (much to mum's delight), the reason he couldn't perform at the Mercury Music prize this year and his love for Creme Fraiche. He resists offering up his last supper and to be honest, the night's a bit of a blur - so much so we forgot to take a photo! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It was Muse who joined Gordon this week from their sunny, seaside setting in Stateside! The lads chatted about their new single and whether or not it's anything to do with one Donald Trump…….! There was a Classic Album from the Manic Street Preachers and plenty of stories about the great and good of rock n' roll: The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney will do, right?! There's also a little bit of festival chat from Yannis Philippakis (Foals) and a ‘wee' bit of a story about beer… Wait for it! Tune in LIVE every weeknight from 7pm-10pm to hear Gordon on Radio X.
