It's May, which means you can still wish people a happy Jewish Heritage Month. You can also wish them a happy Asian Heritage Month—because, in Canada, both minority groups got their politically fluffy cultural celebrations crammed into the same 31-day timespan. To honour the stuffing-together of both heritage months, the Menschwarmers wanted to take a look at a different minority group with some solidarity in mind: Asian athletes. The similarities and societal hurdles between both Asian and Jewish athletes are striking, with both groups coming from largely immigrant communities, facing stereotypes about mathematic abilities and flippant derogatory comments. To examine the subject, we invited on Adrian Lee, an opinion editor at the Globe and Mail who is also a longtime sports fan and good friend of the hosts. They discuss these themes and more, including the complicated relationship between minority fans and players who share their ethnicity—and even rattle off a few Asian-Jewish athletes worth remembering. Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. While the consequences of geopolitical events are felt in the currency markets first, in the long-term it is fundamentals that continue to drive this asset class, says Adrian Lee, the President and CIO of Adrian Lee & Partners, in this episode. He discusses emerging trends across both, as well as identifying the fault lines in the global economy where we might see the next big risk factors emerge from. Lee also discusses how and why investor attitudes towards currency management are changing, helps to get beyond some of the jargon surrounding these services and makes the case for active over passive currency management.

Martin Keller has published a truly landmark achievement in UFO literature. This multi-layered memoir of an “experiencer”—who was also an insider of the UFO researcher world — is not only deeply personal but resonantly aimed. Martin Keller spent 10 years embedded in the Close Encounters of the 5th Kind movement, which aims for human-initiated contact and increased governmental disclosure about the phenomenon. The writer's adventures with the elites of ufology took him to many unusual and “active” high strangeness locations, including his own bedroom. The reader is pulled into the author's provocative odyssey as he explores the interesting historical and cultural context for UFO/UAP activity, sifting through the ample evidence in search of fresh insights, which are abundant. Endorsed by Dan Aykroyd, this highly readable book was released just as the Big Thaw in UFO disclosures was beginning. A must-read for UFO newcomers and veterans alike! Advance Reviews “Martin Keller's book combines an intriguing personal journey with a careful evaluation of the theories and personalities of the UFO world, striking a perfect balance between skepticism and open-mindedness. His adventures are described honestly and with a flair for detail. The author sifts through the evidence thoughtfully, moving past the clichés and conventional thinking about other-worldly visitors and exploring new scientific theories that involve quantum physics and human consciousness itself. Readers will have their preconceptions shaken, which is a good thing.” John Thavis, bestselling New York Times author of The Vatican Diaries, and The Vatican Prophecies “Martin Keller lays out an entirely convincing and gripping account of his own eye-witnessed and continually credible events as an experiencer and his subsequent pursuits for truth and understanding while ultimately surviving travels through the ‘UFO Ghetto. This comprehensive journey into the nature of how the inquiry into these matters can obsess one is packed with deep sound witness testimonies, lots of history, classic sightings, lore and a realistic view of the preachers in the skeptic church. The Space Pen Club is also an essential read for anyone interested in getting to the truth about one of the greatest mysteries and enigmas in our existence. The mechanisms and fuel sources in these crafts could help save our planet and provide basic needs for millions - power, clean water and climate temperance.” Dan Aykroyd, legendary SNL cast member, Blues Brother, producer and writer with a lifelong interest in all things psi, paranormal and saucerlogical “I never told anyone what happened at dusk that night as my girlfriend and I cruised between cornfields on a small highway back to Minneapolis from Hutchinson, Minnesota. I did not want to hear disbelief or suffer the humiliation of telling my truth. I never told anyone that is until Martin Keller shared his truth with me one afternoon over lunch and a little Prince gossip. Kudos to Keller for helping me come to grips with a series of events that happened to me so many years ago and for finally sharing his own story in this personal, page-turning epic called The Space Pen Club!” Owen Husney, author of the memoir Famous People Who've Met Me and the man who discovered Prince “This is not just another book about UFO sightings, but rather a captivating look at how the public disclosure of UFOs has relentlessly unfolded under the pressure of dedicated activists, the ubiquity of cell phone cameras, a growing acceptance of UFO phenomena, an erosion of the government's grip on information, and an intensity of contact. Today we're bringing you an episode of City Space, a Globe and Mail podcast about how to make our cities better, hosted by Adrian Lee.Cities are filled with seemingly endless options when it comes to food. But we're also increasingly disconnected from what we eat and how it makes its way to our plate. In this episode, we're taking a look at how the pandemic has given us the opportunity to rethink our relationship with food, both in terms of the restaurant industry and farmed food that fills our fridge. Adrian speaks to Corey Mintz, a food writer and critic about his new book The Next Supper: The End of Restaurants As We Knew Them, and What Comes After. Corey shares how the pandemic has changed the restaurant industry, from tipping to labour demand, and what diners should think about next time they eat out. Plus, we hear from Carolyn Steel, architect and author of Sitopia: How Food Can Save the World. Carolyn shares how cities have lost some of their essential connections to the food that fuels their citizens, and what we can do about it.
Potatoes! They're affordable, accessible, ultra-versatile, and most importantly, delicious. But a case of potato warts found on two farms in Prince Edward Island last November has wreaked havoc on the local potato economy. The wart led the Canadian government to restrict exports of all P.E.I. potatoes to the U.S. for months. Even though potato warts aren't unsafe to eat, over 300 million pounds of potatoes were destroyed.Adrian Lee is a content editor at the Globe and Mail's Opinion section, and has come to consider the economic and cultural importance of the spud. It's Food Week here at The Decibel. We take a special look at what keeps us alive – and, some say, makes life worth living. We'll look at food from different angles, from the ethics of eating so-called ‘smart animals', to how the war in Ukraine showed us the fragility of our food system, to the business of potatoes. Plus, we'll take you into the kitchen to cook something delicious.Let us know what you think by emailing us at thedecibel@globeandmail.com.
Today we're bringing you an episode of City Space, a Globe and Mail podcast about how to make our cities better, hosted by Adrian Lee.Climate change isn't just coming, it's here. And cities are uniquely susceptible to its effects because of their population density and infrastructure. So how can they better prepare for the increasingly devastating impacts of the climate crisis? In this episode, we explore the concept of climate resilience — how prepared are cities to anticipate, prepare for and respond to natural disasters? We hear from Thaddeus Pawlowski, an urban designer, professor and managing director at the Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes at Columbia University, who was on the ground helping New York City rebuild after Hurricane Sandy. Plus, Adrian speaks to Toronto's former Chief Resilience Officer Elliott Cappell about how he helped Toronto develop a plan to deal with climate disasters and what gives him hope for our future.
Today we're bringing you an episode of City Space, a Globe and Mail podcast about how to make our cities better, hosted by Adrian Lee.If you're a white-collar worker, chances are your office setup looks different than it did before the pandemic. After our two-year-long global experiment with remote work, many employees say there's lots to like about it, with a number of companies now offering hybrid workplaces. All that empty office space is going to have an effect on the rest of our cities. In this episode, Jennifer Barrett, a senior planner with The Canadian Urban Institute outlines three ways that vacant offices could affect our downtown cores and what she hopes will be our way forward. We take a look at what Calgary is doing – since it was dealing with a vacant-office crisis even before COVID-19 – with the help of The Globe's deputy national editor for cities and real estate James Keller. Samantha Sannella, the managing director for strategic consulting at global commercial real estate firm Cushman and Wakefield, also joins us to talk about how Calgary's revitalization plans for their downtown could inspire other Canadian cities, and whether plans to convert offices into housing are realistic. Finally, Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code, explains why so many people want this office revolution in the first place, and how this represents an opportunity to shift away from the white, male-centric ways in which workplaces were originally designed.

Must poetry be inaccessible? Can you be a full time poet? What is more exposing -publishing your own poetry or editing an anthology of other poets' works? I had so many questions for this week's guest, the poet and writing coach James Crews, and he was gracious enough to share his insight. Apart from talking about how he started out as a poet, and how to build a community as artists, he also read from his upcoming collection 'Path to Kindness' . Written and Produced by Matthew C. "Much of the stress that people feel doesn't come from having too much to do. It comes from not finishing what they've started." I totally agree with David Allen on this. Not just from the funk I'm in right now but also looking back at how stress and fatigue affected my creative work in the past. How did I manage to stay creative in spite of the stress and exhaustion? We all have creative wounds. As we all carry shrapnel from bombing a performance or from our expectations blowing up on our faces. How do we heal from the rejection, negative criticism or utter indifference of the world to our work so that we can continue to create? I posed this question and others to our guest this week, Brooke Adams Law.Brooke is a writer and creative coach. She uses writing as a tool to help women step into sovereignty, reclaim their voices and remake their stories. You can buy her latest novel, Catchlight, here.Written and Produced by Matthew C. Do you feel stuck in your creative work? What is holding you back from creating your dream project? Is it having limited resources? Or interruptions in life? Or lack of time?According to our guest this week, Austin Kleon, all these can work in your favor. Creativity becomes a matter of subtraction and routine. As Stephen King says, it can overwhelm you to write a 365 pages long book, but what if you wrote a page a day?Austin is an Austin based 'writer who draws'. His books, mostly about creativity, have been on the New York Times bestseller lists for years, translated into tens of languages and sold over a million copies. He recently released a 10th year edition of his classic, 'Steal like an Artist'. One part of the creativity process that's overlooked is deep listening. Listening to yourself, and others too. It's equivalent to the negative space in art and design as it allows our perspective to broaden up amongst other things. How good a listener are you?Written and Produced by Matthew C. He has directed numerous projects including the award-winning short films "Cabeceo," “Far,” “Une Libération,” and “Electoral Emissions” as well as commercials for Princess Cruises.Written and Produced by Matthew C. Mostly, we define ourselves by what we do for ourselves or for who we want to be perceived as. In essence, we identify ourselves with our egos, these tiny fractions of who we really are. What if though, we pursued what makes us one with others in our lives? What if we served others wholly?Written and Produced by Matthew C. TempleEdited by Tyen MusaOriginal Theme Music by Adrian Lee
Where does creativity and fatherhood meet? Isn't a father far different from a creative? Our guest for this week had a epiphany that the road to being a good father is akin to the hero's/ creative's journey. We talk about that and other things like, how his background of being raised by a single mum affected him, and how he makes time to write even while being present for his son.Kendall Smith is an author and dedicated father. His latest book 'Rookie Father' is a playbook offering pragmatic advice to men experiencing fatherhood for the first time. Written and Produced by Matthew C. How do you define a hero? For me, it's someone who not only transforms the lemons that life throws at them into lemonade, but they actually also become the lemonade fix in and of themselves. They not only transform the world around them, but become the alchemist of their own person.Written and Produced by Matthew C. TempleEdited by Tyen MusaOriginal Theme Music by Adrian Lee
