POPULARITY
I'm your host Mason Vera Paine and in today's episode we will be featuring music from Stelios Vassiloudis, Will Taylor, Paluma, Mason Talbot, Vinyl's From The Past and Music News. Stelios Vassiloudis: Start - 0:16 and End – 6:53From Athens, Greece comes Stelios Vassiloudis, a DJ and Producer with classical training. Stelios diverse and strong musical background has allowed him to earn not only a loyal fan base but secure collaborations with renowned labels like Bedrock, Poker Flat, Ovum, and Constant sound. For the latest on Stelios and his upcoming projects visit: Steliosvassiloudis.com; that's S-T-E-L-I-O-S-V-A-S-S-I-L-O-U-D-I-S DOT COM Will Taylor: Start – 6:54 and End – 14:20DJ and Producer, Will Taylor is one of the leading names in the UK Tech House scene. His signature sound has been instrumental in setting the trends within the genre. Take a listen to his latest track “Famous”. “Famous” is out now via North of Neptune records and it's available on all streaming platforms. Since the start of his career, Will has been driven by a strong work ethic and desire to make unique music. This concept has opened the door to multiple opportunities like multi-summer residency at Amnesia Ibiza and club shows at Studio 338, Tobacco Dock, Motion Bristol and Soho Garden Dubai. For the latest on Will's upcoming appearances and projects visit: Instagram.com/willtayloruk; that's Instagram.com/W-I-L-L-T-A-Y-L-O-R-U-K Vinyl's From The Past: 14:22 to 25:06I am going to take a brief break from Vinyl's From The Past. In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Underworld”. “Underworld” was formed in 1987 and consisted of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith. As a duo they created synthpop music. However in 1990 the group became a trio and add Darren Emerson. At this point they went from synthpop to progressive house and techno. In 1996 they had their biggest mainstream hit “Born Slippy.Nuxx”, which was on the “Trainspotting” soundtrack. Take a listen here. “Born Slippy.Nuxx” captured the emotional and human element of the characters in “Trainspotting”. The use of vocals in EDM was new at the time because EDM tracks were largely instrumental. In addition, this track was a fusion and trance with its driving, repetitive. synth beats. This fusion blurred the lines with the genres. All of these things combined assisted with the evolution of EDM. That's it for this week's Vinyl's from the past; now let's get back to more music. Paluma: Start – 25:07 and End – 31:53Our next artist, Paluma is a DJ and Producer from Australia that specializes in minimal music and deep house. For more than a decade, Paluma has been entertaining audiences with his live performances in Australia. 2020, marked the beginning of his journey as a producer and saw the release of his debut produced track "Rock The Boat". Paluma is also known for his reworking of popular songs like Fergie's "London Bridge". He is back with his latest rework of Sean Paul's 2000 hit “Temperature”; take a listen to it here.
My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” junto a David Byrne.
The exceptional second album from the London group plays like a slow burn to a triumphant finale. Softer and more melodic, the band remains just as challenging and delightfully confounding as ever. 这句话实在是不好翻译,建议大家去从第一张专辑完整听到第二张,就会明显的感觉到那种slow burn到triumphant finale的过渡,自我审视,剥离;从那种"yo Issac you ok?"(I make this up, but if you know, you know.) 的距离感到"so if you see me looking strange with a fresh style, I'm still not feeling that great"(Basketball shoes-ants from up there)的那种感觉。 再到第三张现场recording的尝试(Live at bush hall),从疏离,忧郁,破碎,到“Look what we, did together, BCNR, Friends Forever”的振奋人心。 Enjoy. Songs Intro: Up song - live at Bush Hall 02:47 Up song cont. - live at Bush Hall 06:23 Intro - Ants From up there 09:48 The Place Where He Inserted The Blade - Ants From up there 17:22 The Place Where He Inserted The Blade, cont. - Ants From up there 25:47 Instrumental - For the First Time, live at Queen Elithbeth Hall 31:25 Sunglasses - For the First Time 47:25 Happier Than Ever - Billie Eilish Cover - Never Again 1:01:41 Track X - For the first time 01:11:21 Chaos Space Marine - Ants From up there 01:20:40 Concorde - Ants From up there 01:31:36 Bread Song - Ants From up there 01:43:28 Haldern - Ants From up there 01:53:26 I won‘t always love you - Live at Bush Hall 02:01:39 The Boy - Live at Bush Hall 02:12:12 Turbines/Pigs - Live at Bush Hall 02:23:31 Up song Reprise - Live at Bush Hall
Our guest today is Travis Thatcher - here is what he had to say about Dubnobasswithmyheadman by Underworld: "This was the first album of the re-invented form of Underworld with Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, eschewing their prior new wave pop for a more focused electronic sound. Working with a young Darren Emerson (who went on to a huge career as a DJ), dubnobasswithmyheadman established the archetype of Underworld's future releases and received high praise from the music press at the time. I discovered Underworld through the Wax Trax (US) single release of Cowgirl which also appeared on the Hackers movie soundtrack. Thankfully the tune and the record it came from have aged far better than the movie (hack the planet!). As a teen growing up in Eastern PA, I had never heard anything that sounded like them. I was immediately hooked and closely followed their subsequent output. Learning more later about their background in the group Freur and the earlier new wave incarnation of Underworld, their evolution made a lot of sense to me. Dubnobasswithmyheadman was one of the records that Ben and I bonded over when first forming Judi Chicago. Karl Hyde's vocal delivery is a really great example of using voice as an instrument - you can focus on the texture and timbre and get just as much out of it as you can from his words. Mmm Skyscraper is also a big favorite. The stream of consciousness lyric style is something I am always able to get lost in. I also always dug how much guitar was on this record and how the guitar parts are treated and mixed so seamlessly with the electronics."

Aquí podemos escucharlos con 2 temas: “Hey Boy Hey Girl” y “Dig Your Own Hole”. After a decade of success in the vibrant British electronica and techno scene, Underworld reinvented themselves in 2002 when Rick Smith and Karl Hyde released the dark and beautiful A Hundred Days Off. The record remained true to the duo's dance floor roots with a house and techno backbone, but introduced ambient and downtempo elements to the mix. Add Hyde's dreamy and drone-like vocal delivery, the result is a truly exceptional record that's as energetic as it is hypnotic.Tracklist: Two Months Off Freur - Doot Doot Dark And Long Mo Move Sola Sistim Little Speaker Ballet Lane Akotcha - Img.00.37 (courtesy of Soma FM's Groove Salad) This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network. From the very opening sequence of Danny Boyle's debut Shallow Grave - in which the viewer zooms through the streets of Edinburgh to the dark pounding beats of Leftfield - it was clear we were dealing with a filmmaker of great visual flair who understood a thing or two about music too. As if proof were needed, he followed Shallow Grave with Trainspotting and that set of songs - which rank it alongside the likes of Pulp FIction and Lock, Stock ... as one of the defining pop soundtracks of the 1990's. Two decades on and Danny is still blazing a trail. Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud back - alongside Iggy, Blondie, and one or two artists for the 'T2' generation. In the case of Danny, there's simply too much ground to cover in one show. So, for the time being at least, we focus on his various collaborations with John Murphy, AR Rahman and Rick Smith and Karl Hyde from Underworld - who, of course, had a big musical hand to play in both Trainspotting films ...

I have received an incredibly amazing mix-gift from an artist known as HALFTRIBE. This will blow you mind in a very non-abrasive and tranquil sort of way. I'm really lucky to have been contacted by Halftribe (aka Ryan Bissett) asking to host a mix. Normally, I contact the DJ and am (luckily) always given a green light to host the mixes. I have to say, I was really happy to have received contact from Ryan to host this mix. It's not often that I get goosebumps from being taken in by such intense sets, but this one is one of the rare ones that did the trick. This one sits where I want, in the foreground, in the background, bathing in the aura of its intense harmonic vibe. Halftribe has been very busy, creating amazing mixes as well as churning out some original music (links for everything are below).Halftribe got into electronic music long ago through way of New Order (1986 on CD and Technique on Vinyl), which opened a gateway to the rave scene in the UK during the late 80's and early 90's. It was at these raves that Halftribe gotten taken in by the post rave chill music, and his fascination for ambient music sparked an interest in exploring its history. As with many frustrated creative artists with an ear for music but without means to create, that path seemed to be expensive and inaccessible. When DAW's became available, Halftribe finally had the opportunity to begin producing deep house, techno, and (mainly) ambient and downtempo. He has released on VENT SOUNDS,ATRIUM DIGITAL, and ASSEMBLY FIELD. When not creating original compositions, he spends his time remixing and has been fortunate, through his links within the industry, to be asked to do a remix for Karl Hyde from UNDERWORLD for his solo album (as well as commissioned for other remix work). In terms of mixes, Halftribe favors searching mostly undiscovered talent found on Soundcloud as well as Bandcamp, and used to do a regular mini-mix on his Soundcloud page to showcase these artists. It just so happened that one of these mixes got shared on MIXMASTER MORRIS' Facebook page, and the interest that it sparked led to a monthly mix for M:CAST RADIO which lasted 2 years. One might call if fate, that Halftribe was a huge fan of Mixmaster Morris when first getting into ambient music and own albums of his in his Irresistible Force guise. This year Halftribe is creating mixes for different sites, and has already had mixes up on PANAMBIENT, CIRCUMAMBIENT, SPACES FM, and ART OF BEATZ. You can find Halftribe's original music on his SOUNDCLOUD page and his BANDCAMP page. To hear more of his amazing mixes, you can steer toward his WEBSITE and his MIXCLOUD page. Keep up with him at TWITTER to get updates on his aural activities.I'm absolutely honored to be a part of Halftribe's musical quest, and hope that in some way my small part in this brings him just a bit more success. It's very inspiring to see an artist that is so very proactive, and that is without a doubt very inspiring for me! Thanks, Halftribe!turn on, tune in, sleep...ambient-transmission.blogspot.comfacebook.com/tonepoetmusic

Mix) - Red Flag 15. 1963 - New Order Notes and other random things: Believe it or not, I get a lot of great email from listeners, so before I get to the music, let's dig into the CRC mailbag: Dear DJ Tintin, You're always busy with your pod-thingy. What, you too much of a big shot to call anymore? Signed, Mom. Heh...sorry, mom. Just trying to give people their fill of good retro music. I'll call you next week. I promise. Okay, that's it for the mailbag this week. As for the music, most of this episode is rather upbeat and fun with one glaring exception: 1963 by New Order. Regular listeners will notice that New Order turns up a lot in these podcasts, yet I've never really devoted much time to writing much about them. I don't know why that is, exactly. After all, they're one of my favorite bands of all time, so you'd figure I'd give them a ton of column inches in my write-ups. But, everything about the band has always been understated, from their lyrics, to their cover art, and even to their significance in music history. In a weird way, I suppose, my omissions might be a greater sign of respect for a group that managed for so long to conceal itself. I mean, they weren't much for interviews and their liner notes rarely revealed anything about the members. Heck, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris were sort of unwilling rock stars anyway, their new band coming about after the dissolution of Joy Division and the death of former band mate and lead singer Ian Curtis. There was some serious discussion as to whether or not they wanted to continue as a band after the tragedy. Thankfully, they did continue on. They overcame early criticisms of being a Joy Division sound-alike and eventually developed their own sound, creating some of the most memorable dance music from the 80s. Blue Monday, for instance, is still the top-selling 12" dance mix of all time. (Check out CRC #19 to hear the song.) As for 1963, there is disagreement about its meaning. A superficial listen to the lyrics reveals a grim scenario whereby a man murders his lover and takes on another. The song is a recap of the failed relationship and seems to be sung from the perspective of the deceased. When taken into account with the date, 1963, however, the song, depending on what you believe, takes on a deeper significance. While much of New Order's music is left for open interpretation, as the band has said, it has also been said that lead singer Bernard Sumner wrote the song about the death of John F. Kennedy. According to some, Sumner had a theory that surmised JFK hired a hitman to kill Jackie so that he could be with Marilyn Monroe. History turned out differently and the bullets found a different target. So distraught was Monroe, she killed herself. The song, therefore, is sung from Jackie's perspective, begging John to spare her life. It's an interesting theory, but history will also show that Monroe died a year before Kennedy. Some have suggested the song refers to a soldier taking on another wife while fighting overseas and killing his domestic lover out of necessity or perhaps guilt. Some have suggested “Johnny” is a reference to Bernard's adoptive father John Dicken. Whatever the case, it's admittedly a sort of a down way to end a podcast lyrically, though the song's producer, Stephen Hague, has pointed out that it's the only song about domestic violence you can dance to. I'll hang my hat on that statement. New Song by Howard Jones is the first appearance for HoJo on CRC. With few exceptions, his music was always positive, but when you’re a self-described optimist that glove would seem to fit. Listen closely and see if you don’t find similarities between this song and Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel. While it’s long gone now, Jones' distinctive Mohawk hairdo was quite the spectacle back in the day. They were one-hit wonders in the U.S. with their 1987 hit Living in a Box, but the band of the same name had a second album that did quite well in Sheffield, England, their place of origin. The song Blow the House Down from the 1989 release Gatecrashing included Queen’s Brian May on guitar. This particular song is from their eponymous debut. After Living in a Box, the podcast took an odd house-y kind of turn. Pablo has a dub feel and comes from Beloved’s remix album called Blissed Out. I’ve Been Thinking About You is the 12” version of the #1 tune by Londonbeat from 1991. The original appeared on their second full-length release called In the Blood. The first time I heard this tune, I thought it was Roland Gift and the boys from Fine Young Cannibals. A reasonable mistake, but a mistake no less. Ride the Bullet is the b-side of Crucified, probably the best-known hit from Army of Lovers. They always reminded me of Dead or Alive with Victorian-era costumes instead of drab-looking gothic clothes. This particular track was remixed by DNA, who has done many remix projects including the classic version of Tom’s Diner by Suzanne Vega (CRC #9) I Say Yeah is an awesome dance track by Italo-Disco producer Stefano Secchi. This particular song is the Razormaid! remix of the track and features vocals by Orlando Johnson. React 2 Rhythm grew out of the West London dance scene. The song here, Intoxication, was the second major release from the group, having signed initially to legendary producer William Orbit’s Guerilla Records imprint. This particular mix, the Dubfield Mix, was one of two by techno outfit Leftfield. The other was called the Clubfield Mix. At least half a dozen others remixed this track including pre-eminent 80s remixer Justin Robertson and John Digweed. Underworld has appeared on CRC before with their track Skyscraper I Love You (CRC #17). Here they return with the album version of Dirty Epic from the same dubnobasswithmyheadman CD. It’s hard to believe the transformation these guys have gone through over the years and maybe even harder to believe Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have been making music together for over 30 years. Though they haven’t yet been on CRC, their early ‘80s outfit Freuer will make an appearance at some point in time. Finally, there’s the Camouflage track X-ray. This version was taken from their limited, 2-disc, numbered best of collection called Rewind. In case you were wondering, I own pressing #3502. As the band puts it, they “liked the aura of the letters forming this word.” Before shooting the video, they wanted to watch the film The Man with the X-ray Eyes. The main character in the film is named Ray Milland. Because it took them ages to find a copy of the film they had watched as children, they eventually named the bonus track of the X-ray single In Search of Ray Milland. Bet you didn’t know that! Seems like these write-ups keep getting longer and longer every new episode. I’ll have to work on shortening them. I just don’t want to gyp any of the bands out of their due glory, though I may have to concentrate on the songs that have really neat stories behind them in the future. I don’t know. We’ll see, I guess. That’s all for this episode. I’ll be back again soon with more mail from the mailbag and some more groovy retro tunes. Until then…be good, everyone. By the way, the image associated with this episode is Half Face with Collar by Roy Lichtenstein. It is significant not only for the high price it was supposed to fetch at auction (and didn’t), but for the fact it was completed in…you guessed it…1963. Thanks to the website artobserved.com for the great image.
Being a fan of Underworld for at least 20 years now, we proudly present the new release “Barking” on our show! Soon after we noticed this new album we ran to our local store an bought it. Of course we did some pre-listening to the iTunes Store 30-second snippets before doing so…The album is good! Past, present and future come together during this 9 track story; Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have been in music production for 30 years, they know how to entertain us. And please, have a good listen yourself before judging. We have read reviews out there, some of them really good, unfortunately a bunch of reviews being completely untrue and not understanding the vibes that Underworld is so very keen on. The most funny review we found is posted by The Telegraph and it says: “There are a couple of vintage Underworld tracks but the album ends disappointingly with Louisiana, which is guaranteed to clear the dance floor”. We think that The Telegraph simply don’t get the story right here. The album “Barking” is not only about dance. And that’s a good thing! It’s not only about uplifting tracks, we can hear a story about the old, the new and what might be expected. The truth is, we are happy that Underworld is not doing the uptempo thing the entire album. There’s other ways to go there and to fill the ‘dance floor’all night long! I like the Dutch review at dance.nl much better, saying “Ja, Underworld klinkt zeker nieuw; van rauwe techno tot meeslepende trance en ambient, en tegelijk meer pop dan je ze in tijden hebt gehoord. Geweldige plaat.” In plain English that is: “Underworld sounds new; rough Techno to Trance and Ambient and more Pop than ever, great record”. After we bought ourselves the original digi-pack in the local record store in Rotterdam (PLATO) being the one including the DVD video clips, we decided to contact OM-Records in the US. Big thanks to James @ OM-Records for his enthousiasm and understanding. And yes… we’ve got official permission to play some pieces of the “Barking” way of life. The release with many collaborations, just to name a few: Paul van Dijk, Mark Knight and D. Ramirez. We’re pretty sure our audience will like the taste of it. Tune in to the Spacemusic podcast upcoming saturday september 25th 2010 for a party episode with Underworld! ~TC

Underworld have sold over a million albums worldwide, featured two tracks on Danny Boyles Oscar nominated classic "Trainspotting" and are renowned for their stunning and unpredictable live shows. The hits include Cowgirl, Rez, Dark and Long and Born Slippy – all classics. 2000 saw Emerson leave Underworld and go solo. Although the band had been his passion for 10 years, it was time to branch out; concentrate on his record label and work with different producers. The first collaboration saw Emerson and DJ cohort Sasha produce the Ibiza classic ‘Scorchio'. Two Global Underground compilations soon followed; ‘Uruguay' and ‘Singapore' and the hugely succesfull Underwater Episodes. All proving that Emerson was back to doing what he does best; showcasing everything from deeper house through to jackin' techno cuts. Darren has also remixed tracks for everyone from The Prodigy to Everything But The Girl and Gus Gus. In 1994 Darren Emerson started Underwater records, initially to release music for his friends, the label has seen releases from Steve Mac, Paul Woolford, Josh Wink, Gus Gus, Joel Mull, Smith & Selway, Paul Jackson, and Tim Deluxe – whose ‘Sirens/ We All Love Sax' and ‘It Just Won't Do' helped put Underwater firmly on the map. In 2003 Underwater was voted label of the year by DJ Mag and continues to go from strength to strength releasing albums and singles from its ever growing and increasingly varied roster of artists. Darren recently released his third Global Underground compilation 'Bogota'. His debut solo artist album is now finished and will be backed with a plethora of club tracks meanwhile he continues his relentless globe trotting DJ schedule.Playlist:impster - treat me rightruss gabriel - prey telld'julz - rotondosteve hurley - jack your bodym.in - the beatAcumen - VictoryMaher daniel - dropping the gramaphoneJosh Wink - Everybody To The Sun (Slam)Ben Ben - Lucy LuDarren Emerson - DecisionsDarren Emerson - Hard4Slow (Xprezz-2)Darren Emerson & Jamie McHugh - Where We Came From (Patch Park)Dave Manual - ThunderboltDarren Emerson - Hard4Slow (Detone Dub)Many Thanks to Mr Luke Allen
