Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James, who proudly wears her blue Frank & Friends Show hoodie.  Frank and Becca received Visa gift cards as thank-you gifts after emceeing an event. Frank found that his card had been hacked and the money was spent. He was able to get reimbursed after the card company investigated.  They received cards again after another event but Frank could not get it to work at a local retailer when he tried to buy eighteen gallons of chlorine. Eventually his wife Jere was able to spend all but $1 of it.  Becca bought some clothes online even though she can't be sure if they will fit. Frank also wears a variety of sizes depending on the brand. Jere organizes the wardrobe that Frank wears on Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. The show's judges sang “You're So Vain” to Frank when he took a “wardrobe selfie.”  This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm.  Frank's neighbor has a yard full of elaborate Halloween decorations including a giant skeleton. Becca asks if she can bring her kids to trick-or-treat in Frank's subdivision.  Frank went to the funeral for the father of a former co-worker named Sam. Another former co-worker named Joey Tack was at the funeral. Frank noticed that Joey was standing in the receiving line next to former television meteorologist Mike Witcher and made a big deal about introducing them to each other.  When Becca's grandfather passed away, she spoke at the funeral but was surprised when the priest told her to speak before the Mass started. She introduced herself as Rebecca but the priest misheard her and confused her with another relative named Deborah.  A woman asked Frank's daughter if she came from a political family or a media family. She asked because Frank's daughter is well-spoken.  Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com  Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Author Joel Selvin, a San Francisco Chronicle pop music critic for thirty-six years, is author of more than twenty books about pop music, including the definitive account of the Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont and the biography of songwriter Bert Berns that paved his way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the No. 1 New York Times best-seller, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock with Sammy Hagar. Ladies and gentlemen, the subject of Joel Selvin's latest book was raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and got his start as a professional drummer touring with the Everly Brothers in the mid-1960s. Jim Gordon's penchant for creative and astonishingly accurate musicianship earned him regular session work, joining the community retroactively referred to as The Wrecking Crew. His supernatural intuition and perfect sense of time can be heard on more than 30 Top 10 singles including several #1 hits, such as the Beach Boys' “Good Vibrations,” Carly Simon's “You're So Vain” and “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher (he also supplied the literal beat for “The Beat Goes On” by the latter). He has been immortalized on albums by George Harrison, John Lennon and the Byrds, among dozens of other household name music acts. Gordon was notably the drummer for Derek and the Dominos and provided the piano coda for their evergreen anthem “Layla.” Joel Selvin details how Gordon didn't merely keep time, but he was also instrumental in shaping compositions; whether it was his Latin-influenced rhythms on “Rikki Don't Lose That Number” by Steely Dan or his monumental drum break on the Incredible Bongo Band's “Apache” (a staple of hip-hop from the genre's inception, having been sampled on over 750 other records), he wasn't just a player on hits, he made them hits. If you love music history, then Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey of Jim Gordon is a must read. Joel Selvin's power of the pen makes live every page of Jim Gordon's life and you learn in the midst of brilliant musicianship, the darkness of mental health issues like paranoid schizophrenia.  #mentalhealth #mentalillness #schizophrenia #drummer #rockmusic #popmusic #ericclapton #georgeharrison #lindaronstadt #carlysimon #sonnyandcher #cher #beachboys #jamesbrown #jacksonbrowne #boneshowe #mikepost #musicrecording #popmusic

There are so many sides to this song, from the brilliant writing, to the cultural obsession with the secrets behind it, and a huge cast of eligible narcissists ready to play their part. You're So Vain, originally by Carly Simon, covered by Liza Minnelli, Faster Pussycat, and John Barrowman. Yes, we needed this many versions of it to get to the bottom of things.  Outro music is 1987 by Steel Panther, and they are so good.

Jim Gordon played the drums on Wichita Lineman, Good Vibrations, the Byrds' Mr Tambourine Man and hundreds of other recordings we all own and worked with pretty much everyone including Steely Dan, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Randy Newman, John Lennon, Frank Zappa and the Everlys. He toured with Delaney & Bonnie and Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs And Englishmen package and was a member of Derek & the Dominos. He played with a “bounce, a lilt, a boiling undercurrent” that added a whole new melodic dimension and he saw two different worlds from the inside, the studio-based pop factories of the ‘60s singles boom and the big ‘70s tours of the heyday of the rock album. West Coast author and music columnist Joel Selvin considers his supreme talent and ultimately catastrophic story in his new book ‘Drums & Demons: the Tragic Journey of Jim Gordon' alighting here at various points in detail, among them … … the intersection between “rock and roll and true crime”. … the secret of “a compositional drummer”. … how he started at the top, aged 17, touring with the Everlys and the Rolling Stones. … how Rita Coolidge was robbed of her royalties, twice. … his appetite for fame and recognition at a time when “being a rock star was the most elevated position in the world”.   … why he turned down a Dylan tour.   … the long, tangled evolution of ‘Layla' and what Jim added to You're So Vain that transformed it. … and why he was sentenced to 16 years (for the murder of his mother) and ended up doing 38. Order Joel's book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Drums-Demons-Tragic-Journey-Gordon/dp/1635768993Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon for early - and ad-free! - access to all of our content: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.

Jimmy Ryan has been Carly Simon's guitarist since the 1970s. He's an American artist, composer, producer, and author with a career that has spanned six decades. Beginning at seventeen, he and his college band, The Critters, had their first top forty hit, “Younger Girl,” which was followed by three charting albums and two more top forty hits, “Mr. Dieingly Sad” and “Don't Let The Rain Fall Down on Me.”In 1970, Jimmy's friend, Carly Simon, called him to put a band together for her. She was rising fast on the US and British top 40 charts with “That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be,” as well as her first album “Carly Simon,” on which Jimmy played guitar. Jimmy went on to perform with Carly on most of her future albums and continues to work off and on with her to this day. He's the guitar soloist on many of Carly's hits, the most memorable being “You're So Vain,” and the Academy Award winning song of the year, “Let the River Run,” from the movie, Working Girl. Aside from Carly Simon, Jimmy's also recorded with numerous superstars including no less than: Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Luther Vandross, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, John Entwistle, Elton John & Kiki Dee, The Doors, Rod Stewart, and many more, earning him six gold records and one platinum record. As a studio musician Jimmy has recorded alongside legendary session players, like: Jim Gordon, Claus Voorman, Jim Keltner, Nicky Hopkins, Will Lee, Steve Gadd, Lowell George, Robbie Robertson, Paul Shaffer, David Sanborn and many more. Along the way, he found time to perform in the original Broadway production of Hair. And he was a principal actor and musician in the Broadway production of “Pump Boys and Dinettes.”Jimmy has scored music for TV, creating themes and music for NBC News, CNBC, MSNBC, Lifetime, USA, and PBS. He's also composed, arranged, and produced music for over 500 radio and TV commercials for clients like: Doritos, McDonalds, IBM, Ford, Nikon, Pizza Hut, Budweiser, Chevy, Coke, Diet Coke, and more.In April 2019, he and his touring band, The Hit Men, were honored with the first ever Road Warrior Award from the Nashville Musician's Hall of Fame. In 2022, Jimmy published his memoir, Behind: Autobiography of a Musical Shapeshifter. It's a fascinating look at the life of a musician working at the highest levels of the music industry, especially the life of a working rock musician. And please be sure to stick around at the end of the show for a real treat. Did your ego get so inflated during the 70's that people would tell you after the last song on the radio that you're so vain, you probably think that song was about you? Of course some guys would just make a funny face and say “well my name is Danny and that was in fact Danny's song”. I didn't have time for any of that, I had ants in my pants, and me and Mrs. Jones had a love jones for some jambalaya. Don't expect me to be your friend; because I'm trouble man, and when it comes to dueling banjos, I am super fly. This week we go reelin' and a rockin' through the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of February 10th, 1973. It's true that Momma don't dance, but we are immune to both the rockin' pneumonia and the boogie woogie flu. German artist, musician and record producer Klaus Voorman, former bassist for Manfred Mann, has played on a number of iconic recordings, from Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" to Lou Reed's "Transformer" album, and with many projects of the former members of the Beatles, whom Voorman has known since their Hamburg days. The one-time London roommate of George Harrison and Ringo Starr won a Grammy for designing the cover of their 1966 album "Revolver," which has just been reissued in a deluxe remastered box set. In 2009, Voormann released his debut solo album "A Sideman's Journey," which featured the two surviving Beatles, McCartney and Starr, performing as "Voormann and Friends." His latest work involves the composition of the graphic novel "Birth of an Icon, which details his efforts behind the creation of the "Revolver" cover art. In this bonus episode of "Everything Fab Four," Voorman — on the phone all the way from Germany — and host Ken Womack discuss the evolution of the Beatles' songwriting, everyone's favorite Mal Evans, and of course, how he created the "Revolver" cover. A note to our listeners: Technical difficulties resulted in audio that's less clear for this episode, but we hope you'll stick around for Klaus' fascinating eyewitness accounts of working with the Beatles. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everythingfabfour/support

If all Klaus Voormann had done was design the cover of the Beatles' Revolver, his place in rock history would be secure. The band needed artwork to match their bold musical leap forward, and he delivered striking black-and-white line drawings of his friends, with photos woven through their flowing hair. He recalls hearing the mind-blowing new music in the studio and struggling to draw one particular Beatle. Voormann also was Manfred Mann's bassist and played with all four Beatles, including on John Lennon's early solo singles and albums, All Things Must Pass and Ringo. He played bass on Harry Nilsson's “Without You,” Carly Simon's “You're So Vain” and Randy Newman's “Short People" as well. He's been here, there and everywhere and wants to tell you.
