Send us a textIn her book, There Was an Old Woman: Reflections on These Strange, Surprising, Shining Years, Andrea Carlisle describes what it means to her to live a long life. She examines why her experience as an older woman is so different from what she expected it to be and realizes that her expectations came not from older women themselves but primarily from a culture that misled her from an early age right into the present day. Through children's stories, art, literature, and common stereotypes that pop up in everyday conversations, we are told what an old woman is and needs. In her view, we can only challenge misperceptions through speaking up, telling our own stories, and supporting one another in facing what these years actually are: the hard truths as well as the perspective and often profound complexity that come with growing older. In this episode, you will discover:Why Carlisle is not afraid of the word "old" and is willing to apply it to herself while also recognizing that others may not feel the same way and have their reasons. The fact that we're all lumped together because of one shared physical reality is as wrong when it pertains to the old as it is with any other group that shares a single physical characteristic. Why a lot of the misunderstanding, not to mention fear, we have about older women is because for centuries, men told their stories, painted their pictures, and constructed fantasies about them that are just as dangerous and damaging as the ones they built around nubile, ever available younger women. Who are we really? Just as proved to be the case in every other era of our lives, living in old age is an individual experience. The opportunity we have now, as opposed to other times in history, is to create more honesty about these years by pushing ourselves to own and share our unique reality with others.About Andrea Carlisle:Andrea Carlisle is the author of There Was an Old Woman: Reflections on These Strange, Surprising, Shining Years. Her work has been published in literary journals, newspapers, magazines, anthologies, and by independent presses. Go Ask Alice . . . Send us a textIt is time to reframe how we think about midlife, the transition period of life between young adulthood and old age, as not a "crisis" but a chrysalis - where a profound transformation happens. In his book, Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age, Chip Conley offers an alternative narrative to the way we commonly think of our 40s and beyond, and reminds us that life begins at 50 with the best of our days still ahead of us.He began exploring the physical, emotional, mental, vocational, and spiritual transitions that happen in our 40s, 50s, and 60s with a desire to share his learning freely. People are living longer than ever before, and because of this midlife becomes even more of an important time in our life. This life stage opens the door to embracing new perspectives and ways of thinking that have the potential to change our lives. In this program, you'll discover how to:Prevent anticipation of your future regret as a form of wisdom that you can embrace any time in your lifeGrow comfortable in your own skinRedefine what a successful life looks likeLet go of our emotional baggage, mindsets, and obligations that no longer serve us as a part of the "Great Midlife Exit"Feel a part of something bigger than ourselves and growing wholeAbout Chip Conley:Chip Conley is on a midlife mission. After disrupting the hospitality industry twice, first as the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, the second-largest operator of boutique hotels in the U.S., and then as Airbnb's Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, leading a worldwide revolution in travel, Conley co-founded MEA (Modern Elder Academy) in January 2018 in Baja California, Mexico. Inspired by his experience of intergenerational mentoring as a "modern elder" at Airbnb, where his guidance was instrumental to the company's extraordinary transformation from fast-growing start-up to the world's most valuable hospitality brand, MEA is the world's first "midlife wisdom school" and has a campus opening on a 2,600-acre regenerative horse ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico in April 2024.Dedicated to reframing the concept of aging, MEA supports students to navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. Send us a textThe key considerations for staying healthy, happy, and enjoying the second half of life can be related to various age-old Japanese philosophical concepts of well-being. For example, Ikigai, a popular concept talked about and used widely today, is not new. It has existed in Japanese culture, along with the other concepts, as far back as the Heian period, 794-1185. Okinawa, Japan, a renowned "blue zone,” region whose inhabitants live to a happy, healthy, vibrant old age regularly follow and practice these beliefs in their daily lives. Renée visited the area in the 1980s while living in Japan and observed and learned many of these simple well-being exercises and spiritual beliefs from the people there, enough for her to create a well-being roadmap on how to use them to enhance health, happiness, and longevity. She noticed that not just in Okinawa, but throughout Japan, these philosophical concepts for well-being were actively embraced by the older population. When Renée returned home, she incorporated her roadmap, based on these well-being concepts, into her counseling practice to guide her clients through the stresses related to aging and retirement. Send us a textIf you're over 50 and pounding the pavement for a job these days, you can face certain challenges. On average, it takes someone aged 55 or older three months longer to find a job than a younger person.Your struggle to find employment results in disappointment at a gut level. Others are furious, discouraged, and dumbfounded by their inability to land a job that suits their experience and desired salary. They pick up part-time consulting jobs to keep afloat, zap resumes into the black hole of online resume bins, wait for a response, and pull their hair out. They have graduate degrees and once held executive and management positions. If you're 50+ and looking for a job, feeling inferior isn't so unusual. You feel like a castoff in today's job market. What are you up against? Some employers figure your salary demands are out of their ballpark and that if they hire you for less, you'll resent it and probably jump ship if you get a better offer. They often perceive, true or not, that you're set in your ways or lack the cutting-edge skills or even the energy to do the job. Then, some hiring managers might surmise that you have age-related health problems or are likely to, and that will be a problem if you take too much time off for periodic sick leave. In this episode, you'll discover:how to prepare both professionally and financially to start out on a new adventurewhere the best opportunities for new employment liehow to find profitable and rewarding jobs to save for retirementhow to cast a wide net to find an opportunity that fits different workers who want different things from their jobsincredible insights into working after 50About Kerry Hannon:Kerry Hannon is a workplace futurist and a leading strategist on career management, entrepreneurship, personal finance, and retirement. Do you want to complete spiritual unfinished business before you die?In every tradition, saints and poets speak of the soul's search for the beloved, the seeker's yearning for the divine, for the Self beyond ego. This holy longing is a secret feeling with many disguises, leading us to pursue a higher union in spiritual practice, religious discipleship, and even romantic embrace. It guides us to timeless wisdom and transcendent experiences. But it also can go awry when we project the divine onto a therapist, teacher, priest, guru, rabbi, or roshi who is all too human - who has unhealed wounds, undeveloped empathy, or authoritarian tendencies. In effect, a woman or man who has a shadow. If he or she abuses power -- sexual, financial, or emotional coercion -- we feel the shock of betrayal, our innocence lost, our faith destroyed.Today, we have witnessed many contemporary teachers of Buddhist, Hindu Hasidic, Muslim, Catholic, and Protestant groups act out their shadows in destructive ways, leaving their followers traumatized and lost. This can be viewed as a mythological moment of ordeal or dark night of the soul.Suffering spiritual disillusionment, we can learn to apply the tools of depth psychology and spiritual shadow work to help us recover and rekindle the flame of longing in our souls. This episode explores personal and archetypal projection, spiritual bypassing, as well as the evolution of consciousness, the nature of awakening, and the role of the Shadow. In this episode, you'll discover why we are drawn to charismatic leaders, what we unconsciously give away to them, and how to reclaim it for our own treasury.About Connie Zweig:Connie Zweig, Ph.D., is a retired therapist and coauthor of Meeting the Shadow and Romancing the Shadow. Music is a whole-brain food. It can nourish an ageless mind, one that is flexible and growing. People who enjoy listening to music have direct access to all the major ingredients for keeping their brains fit. By its very nature, music has a powerful effect on the brain, body, and spirit. Music that you choose to listen to can play a role in helping you develop a consistent lifestyle that supports brain health and overall well-being.Researchers are finding that more than medications, specific lifestyle choices can make a real difference in optimizing brain functions and minimizing the risk of dementia.Music can stimulate both hemispheres of the brain when people are guided to listen with close attention and focus on complex music of many kinds. Learning to do this introduces novelty and challenges the brain, stimulating the growth of new neurons.Music also affects our brains from the limbic system outward to the neocortex. It can help us eat and sleep better. In a May 2013 article in Scientific American, Let's Get Physical: The Psychology of Effective Workout Music, it is referred to as "a type of legal performance-enhancing drug" enhancing the effect of exercise. It plays many other roles in keeping the brain awake and alive.Join Joshua and Lynne and discover your own recipe for brain fitness that can work for you consistently and evolve with changes in your life over time.About Lynne and Joshua Berrett:Joshua Berrett, Ph.D., is a Professor Emeritus of Music, musicologist, jazz and classical music studies author, and violinist in area music groups. Travel awakens our senses and makes life vivid! In contrast to our daily lives, where habits and familiarity blunt our awareness, travel heightens our senses and makes us pay attention to new surroundings. If we are willing to look closely, we may see what has been hiding in plain sight: our emerging self! Our culture softens our edges by offering us comfort and security in trade for experimentation and purposeful risk-taking. Worse, we can believe the time for self-rediscovery or dramatic change is past, belonging only to those younger than us. Intentional travel, whether by armchair, hydrofoil, or caravan, demands active listening to the life around us and our inner response to it. What do you make of the fact that your hotel was overbooked, served only cold food, and was so noisy you couldn't sleep? Did those things impede your learning from the moment, or did they accentuate your appreciation of hospitality under duress, the delicious subtlety of Spanish tortilla, and the resurgence of your interest in meditation?Travel presents us with unpredictable, offbeat situations for which we need to improvise. In so doing, we are reacquainted with aspects of ourselves forgotten, misremembered, or rarely noticed. If we can look without initial judgment at our responses, we may see the learning inherent in those moments. Such learning can suggest a new synthesis of interests and skills or the stirring of insight into how our lives may be shifting.Lastly, travel can happen at home by using fresh eyes to see our days, by recording what we experience in journals, and by creating a process of inquiry that leads us to reflect on more life in a manner that extracts from our life story, the materials with which to create a move vivid future. In 1976, when he was forty-four years old, Henri Nouwen co-authored a book entitled Aging: The Fulfillment of Life. One of Nouwen's colleagues who worked in the field of gerontology extolled the book as the best he had read on aging. Nouwen responded, "I know nothing about aging." Because he was only forty-four at the time his answer was probably correct. But if you are a baby boomer, someone born between 1946 and 1964, you now know something about aging! In 1968 we baby boomers first started graduating from college. We were, are, and will continue to be people asking questions, people questing for the truth and the meaning of life just as they were during their college years and the social, political, and institutional upheavals of the 1960s. Now we face a new round of upheavals and new questions occasioned by our aging. For example,Are you wondering what is to come as you notice changes in your physical health? Are you nearing the end of your career and beginning to ask yourself "Who am I, really?" and "What next?"Are your priorities changing as you experience the loss of family, friends, and peers? At the same time:Are you experiencing greater freedom to live as your responsibilities and demands subside? Are you looking forward to creating a new life thanks to the wisdom of your lived experience? Are the questions of life's meaning and purpose becoming more important? We cannot dodge the realities or the questions these upheavals of aging provoke and evoke. If we try to evade them, there are just too many reminders that we are aging. There is no denying the reality that we are aging and that we have lived more years of our lives than remain to be lived. What can we do and how can we live fully in the face of such profound and sometimes frightening realities? We can re-envision our aging and seek the opportunities for growth that aging holds for us.In this program, we will focus on the spiritual dimension of our life's journey. We will explore some of the spiritual opportunities and paths that are present in our aging.About Bob Weber:Recipient of the American Society on Aging's 2014 Religion, Spirituality, and Aging Award, Robert L. Weber, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Psychology, part-time at Harvard Medical School and a former Jesuit. He also serves as a Massachusetts General Hospital's Department of Psychiatry faculty member. Bob has had a long-standing interest in the integration of psychology and spirituality. This interest is born of his profession as a clinical psychologist and his lifelong commitment to personal spiritual development as both a lay Catholic and former Jesuit. He has been working to integrate a third dimension, aging. This new initiative is not just academically or intellectually motivated. As a first-year "baby boomer" himself (Bob was born in 1946), he has become increasingly aware of aging, both professionally and personally. At his private practice, located in Cambridge, MA, he conducts psycho-spiritual issues groups. Bob also leads seminars, days of reflection, and retreats in a variety of settings that integrate aging, spirituality, and mental health. In her professional world, Andrea has seen her share of conversations between seniors, service providers, and family caregivers. In particular, when caring for an older adult, she sees how difficult it can be for others to really know what would bring that person joy and satisfaction.Getting to the bottom of what is important to an individual's feeling of independence, happiness, and well-being is often obscured by how we go about those conversations. Where family caregivers may lack training, even professional service providers frequently enter into a dialogue that makes a senior feel embarrassed, disempowered ..or even worse, uninvolved in their own care.Building on her years of nonprofit experience with seniors and their family caregivers, her own experience being cared for, and her understanding of what it means to be vital at any age - Andrea developed THE CARDS I'VE BEEN DEALT™.THE CARDS I'VE BEEN DEALT™ uses a simple card game to gently shape the dialogue between families, care networks - and the individuals they support - to uncover what is truly important to the person. The Cards prompt players to express their wishes and goals in a way that invites conversation among all parties. The goal is to use the three sets of cards to create a Life Plan that uncovers a path to joy and satisfaction in everyday living.Join Andrea and Dorian to learn more about this innovative process that is being used in case management, in hospice care, and with adult children caring for an aging parent.About Andrea Gallagher:Andrea Gallagher, CSA®, is a for-profit and nonprofit corporate leader and change agent. The kids are grown, the mortgage is paid, and the career is topping out. Does this mean immediate settlement into old age? Absolutely not! Thanks to the longevity revolution of recent decades, today's 55-75-year-olds are living and working longer and healthier than ever before. This generation is the first to experience the period of personal renaissance between middle and old age, "My Time." It is a whole new developmental stage in the life cycle during which 50-somethings reinvent themselves as inspiring students, artists, travelers, friends, lovers, and so much more.Longevity is imposing a "new normal" of love and intimacy that has radical implications for the definition of marriage, including committed relationships between legally married and those who are not, as well as the formerly married. It includes all the members of our intimate circle, a network of people we cannot imagine our lives without -friends, adult children, siblings, and even old flames. In this episode, you'll discover:The Second Adolescence: How "My Time" is a sort of second adolescence during which My Timers break away from middle adulthood, just as teenagers break away from childhood. The importance of experimentation during "My Time," whether going back to school, going on trips, taking a new assignment, or exploring new relationships. Why recovering friendships and cementing relationships from the past is a huge trend in "My Time."How "My Timers" have gained enough strength from life empowerment to give truly of themselves to others, and why "Giving Back" is important during "My Time."How sexuality, romance, and falling in love - in and out of marriage -is possible during "My Time" as "My Timers" rewrite the rules of what makes a relationship flourish. How to deal with difficulties of love in later life: incorporating past relationships into new ones, dealing with a partner's illness, "retired spouse syndrome," sexual turmoil, and divorce.About Abigail Trafford:Abigail Trafford - author, journalist, and public speaker - focuses on the new life cycle stage after midlife but before traditional old age.
