A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the incredible Daniel Hurst, an Amazon #1 bestselling author known for his gripping psychological thrillers. Now, we're excited to make the full interview available to everyone! If you haven't already, you can watch the full conversation on YouTube or listen to it on our podcast.Daniel's journey from a passionate storyteller to a full-time bestselling author is nothing short of inspiring. In our interview, he shared insights into his writing process, the challenges he faced breaking into the industry, and his thoughts on the evolving landscape of publishing. From Early Struggles to Full-Time WritingHurst's love for storytelling began in childhood. Growing up in the northwest of England, he enjoyed creating stories and always had a vivid imagination. However, like many aspiring writers, he struggled to see a viable career path in writing and spent years working a ‘sensible' job while writing in his spare time.Eventually, his persistence paid off. By 2021, he transitioned into full-time writing—a decision that led to a string of bestsellers, including The Doctor's Wife, The Passenger, and The Couple's Revenge. His ability to craft fast-paced, unputdownable thrillers has earned him a loyal readership and significant success in the publishing world. The Writing Process and Keeping the MomentumOne of the most fascinating parts of our discussion was Daniel's approach to writing. Unlike many writers who spend years perfecting a single manuscript, Hurst thrives on momentum. He emphasized the importance of consistency, treating writing like a full-time job, and producing stories efficiently without overcomplicating the process. His advice to aspiring authors? Don't wait for the perfect moment—just start writing. Discipline and routine play a crucial role in staying productive, and he believes that overthinking often kills creativity. The Publishing Journey: Self-Publishing vs. Independent PublishingInitially, Daniel took the self-publishing route, a decision driven by impatience with traditional publishing's lengthy timelines. By doing so, he gained valuable experience in marketing, reader engagement, and rapid storytelling. His self-published success eventually led to partnerships with independent publishers, allowing him to reach an even wider audience.Hurst believes that while traditional publishing still holds prestige, the accessibility of self-publishing has made it an excellent path for writers willing to learn the business side of the industry.Engaging with Readers and What's NextOne of Daniel's biggest strengths is his ability to connect with readers. He frequently interacts with fans on social media and values their feedback. This direct engagement, he says, has shaped his storytelling and made him a better writer. As for what's next, Daniel has multiple books in the pipeline with Bookouture, with more thrilling stories set to hit the shelves in the coming months. His ability to consistently deliver compelling narratives ensures that his readers always have something to look forward to.Watch or Listen to the Full InterviewThis conversation was filled with inspiration, advice, and behind-the-scenes insights into the life of a bestselling thriller author. If you're a writer, a reader, or just someone who loves a good success story, you won't want to miss it!

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is The Nowhere Girls by Dana Perry TG Wolff ReviewThe Nowhere Girls is a cold case, crime thriller. FBI Agent Nikki Cassidy has returned home to visit David Monroe in prison. On this 15th anniversary, her sister's killer has an agenda of his own and Nikki is the key. Bottom line: The Nowhere Girls is for you if you like serial killer crime thrillers where the past is the key to the present. Two strengths of this story lie in the complexity of the crime and the pacing of its reveal. As indicated in the backcover synopsis (i.e. not a spoiler) the crime here is the kidnapping and murder of not one young girl but several. It begins with the cold case investigation of the murder of Caitlin, Nikki's sister, 15 years ago and is ramped up with the disappearance of another 13-year-old, Natalie, on the anniversary of Caitlin's disappearance. While revisiting the site where her sister's body was discovered, Nikki and team find another body – this one from a girl who disappeared from other state. That element of cross state boundaries enables Nikki to be officially assigned to the case and her team to come in. The evolution of the mystery is deliberately paced and satisfying with nearly every chapter counting. This is the first in the Nikki Cassidy series with the next two already released. I have not read the others in the series. For a first story, Nikki is well developed. Readers can see from early on how her greatest strength is also her greatest weakness. Nikki is one of those characters wo has an abundance of confidence in her own judgement and abilities. This gives her the steadfastness to stick to a case where others would have turned away but also causes her to make poor and selfish decisions where other people pay the consequences. The supporting cast in this story are largely the characters associated Caitlin's murder including the convicted killer, his wife/lawyer, and the ME and prosecutor at the time. The characters are distinctly drawn, making it easy for me to both remember and differentiate them. The logic of the mystery holds up reasonably well when looked at from back-to-front. But. There is no evidence laid out in the story leading to the Big Bad. Instead, the Big Bad self-reveals in the culmination. While this leads to a wrap-up that is satisfying to the reader, ultimately Nikki didn't solve the mystery. When we look at how the main character, Nikki, drove the story, there are mixed results. Nikki is focused on the cold case of her sister's murder while there is an active hunt for missing 13-year-old Natalie. Understanding that Nikki has convinced herself there is a connection between Caitlin and Natalie, there is no sense of urgency on Nikki's part to find Natalie. After the first interview with Natalie's parents, she is focused on what happened 15-years ago. Nikki drives the cold case investigation, yes, but not the missing person in imminent danger. Readers will enjoy this crime thriller best if they go into it with the expectation of a cold case crime thriller rather than a missing person thriller. The discovery that there is a serial killer and answers to Caitlin's murder are the central story; the search for Natalie is not. The dynamic storytelling, dramatic pacing, and satisfying ending make THE NOWHERE GIRLS great entertainment for lovers of crime thrillers. Episode Notes Happy New Year! We review The Housemaid by Freida McFadden as narrated by Lauryn Allman. Thanks to Jess from Bookouture for the ARC. About the book: “Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I'll soon learn that the Winchesters' secrets are far more dangerous than my own.... Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband, Andrew, seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband. I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don't know who I really am. They don't know what I'm capable of.... - The episode is brought to you by Alexandra Park BJJ. Episode Notes We review The Doctor's Wife by Daniel Hurst, the first in a trilogy of thrillers about a village doctor and his wife. Thanks to Jess from Bookouture for the ARC. About the book: He thinks his secret is safe. But she knows the truth.... My husband is a doctor. He's smart and charming, and everybody trusts him. Except me. On the surface, it looks like I have it all–the perfect marriage, the perfect husband, the perfect life. But it's far from the truth. Doctor Drew Devlin is not the respectable figure he makes out to be. The reason we moved to this beautiful, old property with a gorgeous view of the sea was because we needed to put our past behind us. It should've been a fresh start for us both. Except I've discovered my husband has been lying to me again. He's using the power he has in his job to mess with people's lives and to get exactly what he wants–no matter who it hurts. But he's underestimated me. I've had plenty of time, in this big, isolated house, to think about all of his mistakes. And my husband has no idea what's about to happen next.... Our podcast this week features Sharon Peterson (The Do-Over, Bookouture, August 2022). Tempted to give up writing when faced with raising four children (two with special needs), a downsized husband hospitalized with COVID, and the loss of her house in a natural disaster, Sharon turned to blogging as free therapy and with a sense of humor, a dose of humility and a tendency to overshare, discovered a community of bookstagrammers, a loyal agent, and a supportive writing home in WFWA and wound up with a two-book contract with a division of Hatchette. Sharon M. Peterson is a former middle school teacher and has the personality to prove it. One of her favorite quotes is from Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath: “It was her habit to build up laughter out of inadequate materials.” She strives to tackle life that way and create characters who do the same. She lives in Washington with her husband and four children, including two autistic sons. She has one cat, two dogs, one tattoo, and an intense fear of poodles (don't ask). Sharon is the author of The Do-Over and The Fake Out, both romantic comedies. She can usually be found hunched over her computer, creating characters and stories she hopes you'll love as much as she does. To learn more about Sharon, click here.

If you would just like to hear the awesome Tetyana story, skip to around 25 mins. However, we urge you to listen to it all! Tetyana Denford is a Ukrainian-American author and freelance writer. She is also a translator for Frontline News, has written and edited articles for magazines in NY and the UK, is featured in The Telegraph and The New York Times, and speaks several languages. She grew up with her Ukrainian heritage at the forefront of her childhood, and it led to her being fascinated with how storytellers in various cultures passed down their lives to future generations; life stories are where we learn about ourselves, each other, and are the things that matter most, in a world where things move so quickly. Her novel, Motherland (now being relaunched as The Child of Ukraine), is based on an incredible family secret that was revealed by her maternal grandmother, Yulia, only recently, and has been described by people as 'haunting', 'powerful', and 'a fragile and hopeful story of an immigrant family'. It was longlisted for the Readers Digest Self-Published Book Awards, and has been met with critical global acclaim. Her 'conversation books' were published in 2021-2022 and are a series of three themed, handbag-sized books of poetry and prose, designed to help the reader reframe subjects in a way that can help them find hope, magic, empowerment, and love. Her current book, The Child of Ukraine (previously known as Motherland), was relaunched by Bookouture (an imprint of Hachette Books) in July 2022, and a new historical novel will be out in the summer of 2023.Tetyana grew up in a small town in New York, has lived in Italy and the UK, and currently lives in New York with her husband and three children. Her latest novel is The Soldier's Child: A powerful and heartbreaking WW2 saga based on a true story. The blurb:Ukraine, 1941. War has ripped Katya's country and heart in two. When her first love and the father of her child, a young Hungarian soldier, is killed in battle she thinks her heart couldn't break any more. But when she discovers she is pregnant, she is forced to give their beautiful son away. Then two soldiers knock down her door and force her into a truck. Katya is terrified, but as she is driven away to a labor camp her spirit remains strong. Because as she looks out the tiny window at the barren winter landscape she thinks only of her little Alexander…She knows she must find a way to escape if she can ever see him again. But will she ever be reunited with her precious son? Or will they be torn apart forever by the war that has already taken so much?Based on an incredible true story, this is an emotional and gripping novel of family, love and the unwavering strength of hope. S5 EP 3: From Housing Officer to Crime Fiction & Women's Fiction Author (More than 1.8 million books sold) Mel Sherratt

The Next Chapter by Ellie Barker

Mel Sherratt grew up in Stoke and never believed she would actually ever be an author, even though she loved escaping into books. She worked as a housing officer and saw real-life in a way she'd never forget. This would later inspire the story lines in her books. After years of submitting to agents hoping to get a traditional publishing deal, Mel decided to do it herself and publish her own novels. After the first year she had sold more than two hundred thousand books. Agents came to her and she had the book deal she'd always wanted. Her books have now sold more than 1.8 million copies. She writes crime books under her name and women's fiction under the pen-name of Marcie Steele. She has had book deals with Thomas Mercer, Bookouture and Avon. But now, in another Next Chapter Mel has decided to publish her latest book Broken Promises by herself again, using everything she has learned during her years in the traditional world. Mel's story has been such an inspiration to me – especially on the days when rejections came in from agents and you feel nobody will ever want to read your stories. But Mel shows us there is always another way, whatever your Next Chapter may be. To find out more about Mel and her latest book Broken Promises released today (!) : https://melsherratt.co.uk/ And of course you can keep up to date with me here (just in case you've forgotten) https://www.elliebarkerwrites.com/

Usually this duo hosts our month Ask ALLi Q&A event to answer Member's self-publishing questions, but this Salon has a new format and instead of answering Member questions, they're having a conversation about what's going on in the publishing industry and about their own indie author events and experiences. Whereas our month Ask ALLi Q&A is aimed at emerging and experienced indie authors, the topics discussed in our Salon events will be skewed towards the more experienced authors who have already mastered industry terms and are familiar with the basics of self-publishing. Topics discussed this month are Digital Book World, The Data Guy, ISBNs, Audio books, Niche Markets, Box Sets, Pronoun, Microsoft, and Kobo. Kerry Fisher spent half her life talking about writing a novel, then several years at Candis magazine reviewing other people's. It wasn't until she took some online courses with the University of California that the dream started to morph into reality, culminating in the self-publishing of The Class Ceiling. The Avon imprint of HarperCollins picked it up and retitled it The School Gate Survival Guide, publishing in summer 2014. Kerry's second book, The Island Escape, came out in May 2015. It won first prize at the York Festival of Writing for the opening line: ‘I was wearing the wrong bra for sitting in a police cell'. Her latest novel, After the Lie, was published by Bookouture in April 2016.

Christine Munroe interviews Helen Hardt, an author and editor, about her publishing journey in terms of both sides of her career. This month, Helen launched the Steel Brothers Saga series with Waterhouse, an "untraditional" publishing house headed up by indie author all-star, Meredith Wild. Christine and Helen discuss: Helen's publishing path, starting with small presses, and most recently with Waterhouse Press. She became an editor before she became a published author. Her work editing Meredith Wild, starting with Hardwired. “In this industry, it's all about making contacts” – Meredith later started Waterhouse Press, and hired Helen as Managing Editor and took her on as an author. Waterhouse describes itself as an “untraditional press.” From Helen's point of view, they focus on building the author and brand, more so than on each individual book, which she appreciates. They have a virtual office, with a small staff and authors spread out across the US. The Waterhouse team is very accessible to their authors, and open to author feedback on all aspects of the publishing process. Helen's advice: write the best book possible. Learn, learn, learn about the art and craft of writing. Then hire a professional editor. She wishes she could have known that there's more to writing fiction than just knowing your grammar. It would have saved her a lot of heartache in the form of rejections and bad critiques from contest entries. Is it harder for Helen, as an editor herself, to find an editor for her work that she can trust? “You can't have an ego in this business” – there is always so much you don't know about. The Steel Brothers Saga, which just launched starting with CRAVING and is heating up the bestseller lists. The next book, OBSESSION, comes out July 19th. This is Helen's first series in which she'll stretch the story of her characters across multiple books. “All of my heroes are a little bit tortured – this one more tortured than most!” After the interview, Christine talks about the huge success of small independent publishing houses like Waterhouse in recent years. Another great example is Bookouture, based in the UK. They're bridging the gap between self-publishing and traditional publishing, and maximizing the best opportunities offered by both paths. We will likely see more and more of these presses emerge, and it will be very interesting to watch authors navigate these new opportunities.
