Today's guest on Speak Up with Laura Camacho specializes in helping leaders leverage their body language for impact. Join Laura in this bracing conversation with speech-writing award winner Richard Newman. After high school, Richard wasn't sure what career he wanted to pursue and ended with his spending time in a Tibetan monastery teaching the resident monks English. This wildly unique experience taught Richard how to communicate with others beyond words and sparked his interest in authentic and effective communication principles. While working as a professional actor, Richard started helping hairdressers with their communication. His workshops were so successful that he founded UK Body Talk Ltd. In 2014 he won the Cicero Grand Prize for Best Speechwriter of the Year. His research with University of the City London highlights the immense impact of your body language on your leadership and influence, later published in You Were Born to Speak. In this fascinating episode Richard and host Laura cover: - The importance of congruence in communication - Understanding and working through our protective mechanisms - Why being too serious can undermine your message - How to trust your instincts when it comes to body language - How your nonverbal behavior can dramatically influence how others respond to you - The most effective gestures that persuade - The key to becoming a better story-teller This episode of the Speak Up with Laura Camacho podcast is brought to you by The Practical Guide to Effective Communication: Get Recognized for the Value You Already Contribute.

The Marys are begging to know why SF mayor London Breed is so obsessed with killing houseless people, especially in the Tenderloin district (also known as the TL). In late December 2021, Breed declared a "State of Emergency" in the TL: her Xmas gift to her funders in the Real Estate and Tech industries. Joining us is a special investigator and longtime organizer against the city's escalating killing spree in the TL. She helps us unravel the Mayor's bloodlust, as we dive deep into Breed's unquenchable thirst to please her wealthy donors, and create a safe haven for billionaires who collect luxury condos just to leave them empty. Along the way, you'll hear about Breed's bootlicking operation and its sordid details. Thousands of hours in overtime for cops guarding a beloved Louis Vuitton store! The reopening of a decrepit jail! Her ex-boyfriend's legion of private cops who work for the shadow agency "Urban Alchemy"! And who can forget the super-spreader premiere at the soon-to-be-history Castro Theater, to celebrate Breed's no-line cameo in the locally shot, long forgotten film “Matrix 4Ever: The Revenge of Lana's Cornrows”? The history of homosexuality in the city of London goes back hundred of years. Although the typical cruising was documented since the 1700s, this city formed its own culture within the homosexual community that eventually led to the infancy of the modern gay rights movement. During this time the science of sexology was born and the first steps in the process of understanding same-sex attraction laid the framework for truly understanding homosexuality once and for all.
Rudy joins Tony Norfield, author of The City: London and the Global Power of Finance (Verso Books) for a broad theoretical practical discussion on the topic of finance. We discuss Hilferding and Lenin's theories of finance and imperialism, and where they are lacking, how finance is used to enforce global domination today, the exorbitant privilege of the dollar, the discussions around the rate of profit, the role of China and the Belt & Road Initiative, cryptocurrencies and Norfield's outlook for the future.

Journalist Leo Mirani has spent his life in big cities. He worked for the Guardian in Mumbai, India – a city with a metropolitan population of over 22 million people. And, he now lives in London with a population of about 9.8 million people. His whole life has been spent in large cities and metropolitan areas. He, however, has been curious about what small towns might be like and small cities in the United States. So, he came to America on a paid sabbatical to spend 70 days traveling the heartland of our country…examining what small town life is really like. He is coming to the end of his journey and, soon, he will return to his position as News Editor of the Economist magazine in London. There he will write stories about his American experience and try to capture for his readers, the heart of small town American life. Needless to say, the journey was a culture shock for a young man who has spent his life in large cities where anything is available at any time of the day or night. While visiting the college town of Athens, Ohio, Mirini spoke with Tom Hodson of the Spectrum Podcast to share some of his observations about his travels and about the status of global journalism. Mirini covered culture, movies, and the social scene for the Guardian in Mumbai, India. He then was a technology reporter for Quartz business news site until he joined the Economist in 2015. Mirani talked with classes of journalism students at the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

At this year’s Cocktails in the City, one of London’s premier cocktail events, Andrew Scutts, its founder, thought it was hygge time. Nordic TV, food, culture have fascinated us since Sarah Lund put on that woolly jumper. Our four guests this week each took five minutes out of their busy CITC schedule to talk to us about their city-changing bar. Brought together by Woodford Reserve for this one time event, Gobo Hansen of Ruby in Copenhagen, Adam Ghellab of Himkok in Oslo, and Ludvig Grenmo & Andreas Bergman of Linje Tio in Stockholm made it to London to wow the crowds at Cocktails in the City. Ruby’s is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year by embracing the speakeasy style and making perfect Manhattans. Himkok, whose literal meaning Moonshine, not only serves drinks, but produces micro-distilled vodka, gin, and of course Norwegian speciality, aquavit on site. It gained them a spot on Drink International’s World’s 50 Best Bars 2016. Joining them on that list is Linje Tio, whose very presence made their slightly dodgy area into one of the hippest in town. Where you can hear me drinking next: His grandparents make limoncello, his parents sent him to work in a bar at 12 years old, coffee bar that is, it’s no wonder our guest next time found himself behind a bar. From a tiny town in southern Italy, Alfonso Califano and I sit around the table to discover why he ended up in London. Are you a regular listener of the Best Sips Worldwide podcast? A true family venture, Champagne Gremillet, was born when Grandmother Lulu planted those first vines in 1978. In the past, the Aube region where Gremillet sits, was considered second class to their northern friends near Marne and Épernay. They were the farmers, not the blenders. It took a riot in 1911, when the big houses in the north, tried to exclude the Aube from Champagne appellation. Only later in 1927 was the region fully included. Silly as the best Pinot Noir grapes are found there. I leave it to Jean-Christophe to tell you the rest of the family history! Where you can hear me drinking next: We went live to Cocktails in the City London last week to meet the master mixologists invited from a Nordic country near you! Check in next week to find out who came and what they served! Are you a regular listener of the Best Sips Worldwide podcast? This episode has us taking an introspectve look at our backing habits on Kickstarter. Against my own expectations, I ended up recording a podcast WHILE I was at Spiel 2016 in Essen. My buddies DaveO and Steve joined me just outside the Messe convention hall for an open-air recording this afternoon. Now I'm editing it and posting it while on on wifi with the train back "home" to Paris. This is a seat-of-the-pants episode, just giving you a feel for what the impressions are DURING the actual event, when general impressions and incomplete information are the name of the game! (Shoot, I forgot about my opener/closer framework AGAIN! This was MY idea! I'll get better at that.) By the way, I also recorded a segment with Doug Garrett for HIS longstanding podcast, Garrett's Games & Geekiness. I'm just one of a few people he talks to for that upcoming episode. Check it out. Games mentioned: Papà Paolo, Key to the City - London, Great Western Trail, Railroad Revolution, Qwixx Das Duel, Life is Life, Take That,Kuhhandel Das Brettspiel, GLÜX, World Monuments, Checkpoint Charlie, 13 Clues, HMS Dolores, Camel Up Cards, X Nimmt!, Bohnanza Das Duell,Twins, Port Royal Unterwegs!, Fuji Flush, 23, Mea Culpa, Area 51: Top Secret -Mark P.S. Maybe later I'll upload some of the photos I sent out over social media while I was there. In them meantime, you can see them all here. http://twitter.com/BoardgamesToGo
Back for more predictions on what will be the hits and misses at Essen Spiel 2016 are Sean, Ronan and a dozen games forced through the crystal ball. This time up are; Flamme Rouge, Oceanos, The Colonists, Key to the City - London, Cyclades: Monuments, JORVIK, Inis, The Oracle of Delphi, HOP!, Small World: River World, Junk Art and Emojito.

Things you will learn: This mix of filmmakers have a compelling and divided opinion on the class structure that still remains in London.
London’s booming tech scene and Chattanooga’s surprising one. Do start-ups create jobs or destroy them? And a new technology that will transform surveillance video into a tool for business owners and customers alike.
