We power through five shows this week – four new series plus the return of Yellowstone. The Day of the Jackal (Binge/Foxtel, 10 episodes) is the big show of the week with a stunning performance in the lead role from Eddie Redmayne. The Jury: Death on the Staircase (SBS ON Demand, 5 episodes) A re-enactment of a real manslaughter case, presented word-for-word with actors taking on the roles of the jury. Matlock (Paramount+/10) Kathy Bates is a lawyer in her 70s who rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm, where she uses her wily tactics to win cases and expose wrongdoing. One of our critics got the plot twist, the other one…well, not so much! A Remarkable Place to Die (Seven, 4 episodes) Rebecca Gibney features in this, but despite the publicity, she's not the star. This murder mystery feels a little like Return to Paradise and it stars Chelsea Preston Crayford. Yellowstone (Return of S5, 6 episodes) At last Taylor Sheridan's biggest hit is back. But without its biggest star. Just how do they tidy up that plotline? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A new Tik Tok trend of women filming themselves getting an IUD inserted has highlighted how painful the procedure can be for many. It's revealed that in many cases, women's pain is not taken seriously and it should be something that doctors review and reconsider when it comes to the insertion of the birth control device. But is seeing other women's pain helping or hindering the process for those whoa re considering getting the device themselves? We look at exactly how IUD insertion works and what changes your efforts posting your experiences online have achieved. While Something To Talk About takes a break, we are revisiting some of the most candid and revealing moments from the almost 50 guests who have joined us in conversation on this podcast over the past year. If ever anyone needed proof that women are increasingly refusing to disappear from public life once they reach an age that would once have seen them supposedly past their “expiry date”, then they would find it in this sixth episode of the Something To Talk About summer series, And it's not just career success that so many Australian women are finding in their late forties, fifties, sixties and seventies - they are also discovering that with age comes, yes, wisdom, but also happiness, self-confidence and a sense of calm. Today's episode features four such women at the top of their game both professionally and personally, including Nicole Kidman, who says that at 56, she is revelling in making what she calls “teenage choices” when it comes to everything from the roles she chooses to the clothes that she wears. Rebecca Gibney - who turns 60 at the end of this year but often still thinks she's 35 years old, declares that she is still acting by the age of 90, she plans to be less Driving Miss Daisy and more Betty White. Ahead of turning 50 later this year, Asher Keddie reflects on the hard won joys of working and living in a time when women's voices, and stories, are being listened to and celebrated more than ever - while Liz Hayes, another fixture of Australian TV, reveals how she stared down sexism throughout her career to remain on screen much longer than she would have ever thought possible when starting out as a young reporter. She has starred in not just one, but several of Australia's most iconic and beloved TV shows of all time – with a cabinet full of Logie Awards to prove it. So what is the secret to Rebecca Gibney's success? According to the woman herself, the answer is kindness. She recalls being told as a young actor by a co-star that the best advice he could give her to build a long term career was to treat everyone with respect. “Sometimes I'm not the best actor for the job,” Rebecca insists in this interview with Something To Talk About, “but I know people will employ me because they'll go: she's going to show up on time, she's going to know her lines and she's going to be kind.”It's an attitude that has not only helped the Packed to the Rafters star become one of the most popular and acclaimed actors in the country, but has served her well offscreen, too. As she explains in this episode, kindness and a lack of ego has played a key role in her marriage, helped her navigate the trauma of a childhood shaped by domestic violence, kept her grounded in her faith and taught her the value of being a little kinder to herself. As someone who has been open about mental health struggles and family violence long before such issues became part of the national conversation, her honesty has had a profound impact on many – a candour she now extends to sharing make-up free selfies on social media to help make other women feel better about themselves. And as she looks ahead to celebrating her 60th birthday next year, she gets frank about what she calls the “privilege” of growing older. So what does she think of the famous joke that there are only three ages for women to play onscreen: babe, district attorney and Driving Miss Daisy? On today's episode, I talk to actor Rebecca Gibney. Originally from Levin, New Zealand, Rebecca grew up the youngest of six children, and after a somewhat tumultuous childhood, eventually found her way into acting. She first acted in shows like Zoo Family and The Flying Doctors, and in the 1990s starred in shows like Snowy and Halifax f.p. Without going into her full IMDB, Rebecca continued to star in shows and movies including a number of Stephen King miniseries, and in the mid-20teens co-created and co-starred in the wonderful show Wanted. Currently, Rebecca can be seen here in the States every Monday for the next month and a half on the AcornTV show Under the Vines. We are most used to seeing New Zealand actress Rebecca Gibney play characters on the right side of the law, most famously as Julie Rafter on Packed to the Rafters and Jane Halifax on Halifax FP.Now, in her new role, we see Gibney like we've never seen her before. She is playing bad girl The Upholster in the new kiwi crime comedy Lowdown Dirty Criminals: it's been described as Pulp Fiction meets Dumb and Dumber but with a kiwi twist.Gibney stars in the film alongside James Rolleston, Cohen Holloway and Robbie Magasiva in the all Kiwi cast. The role comes as she prepares for reboots of her two most famous shows. She joined Francesca Rudkin to discuss going bad for her new role and reprising her old favourites.LISTEN ABOVE
As Jane Halifax returns to the screen in Halifax: Retribution, Mediaweek's James Manning and Andrew Mercado hear all about the production from star Rebecca Gibney and creator of the original Halifax f.p. telemovies Roger Simpson. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
The secret weapon in the upcoming comedy heist movie Lowdown dirty criminals is undoubtedly the woman who left New Zealand a raw Kiwi kid and became one of the most successful and most loved actors in Australia. She's not only the star of shows like Packed to the Rafters, Halifax fp and Wanted, but these days half the time she produces them as well. It's Rebecca Gibney of course, who as far as we know hasn't made a New Zealand feature film since she played the challenging role of "Clive's secretary" in Mr Wrong back in the 1980s. Simon Morris talks with Rebecca Gibney on the line in her current hometown in Dunedin.
Is there a more loved TV actor than Rebecca Gibney? One of our most enduring screen presences, she’s a surprise packet of a human being, a woman secure enough to be open about her anxieties and her challenging background. In this revealing episode of Interview, she tells Andrew, all about meeting Michael Jackson, why she’s a demon driver, what it was like to be Hugh Jackman’s first onscreen kiss, how she uses her love of dancing to embarrass her teenage son and why she and her husband Richard go together like “arse and undies”.
