Last month we delivered a series of Masterclasses on the Stellar Trainers Matrix, which was a outstanding success, which made it obvious that a podcast to follow up on the same subject would be a no-brainer.One of the top non-compliance at an ASQA Audit is often the Trainers Matrix and this is due to a lack of knowledge on what should be included within the Trainers Matrix and how to ensure that it is compliant. What we often find is that the Trainers Matrix does not sufficiently map the skills and knowledge of the trainer against the units of competency. In this episode you will learn:The importance of Existing Skills and Knowledge and how they should be mapped onto your Trainers MatrixHow to address vocational competenceHow to map experience and qualifications to the training productIndustry and VET CurrencyWhat is sufficient Professioanl DevelopmentHow to verify Trainers qualifications and experienceUseful Links:Stellar Trainer ScorecardStellar Trainer Matrix CourseConnect with Angela Connell on LinkedInVivacity on LinkedInVivacity Community - Facebook GroupRTO Job Board - Facebook Group
There is a change with how we are regulated, and it is for the better! As the national VET Regulator, ASQA's role is to ensure quality vocational education and training so that students, employers, the community and governments can have confidence in the integrity of training products issued by you as an RTO.We are already experiencing a range of changes in how RTOs are being regulated through a range of client Assessments (Audits) this year. It is so refreshing to see the change and how we are improving. In this episode:How ASQA has changedThe impact it will have on your RTOWhat is the future of ASQA AuditsUseful Linkshttps://www.asqa.gov.au/rto/focus-compliancehttps://www.dese.gov.au/skills-reform-consultationhttps://www.asqa.gov.au/about/how-we-regulate/regulatory-strategyConnect with Angela Connell on LinkedInVivacity on LinkedInVivacity Community - Facebook GroupRTO Job Board - Facebook Group

In today's Education in Isolation Podcast, I interview Marc Ratcliffe, CEO of MRWED Training and Assessment, and a multi-award-winning trainer, author and education entrepreneur. Marc delivers Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and PD for Trainers and Assessors. When COVID hit, Marc was stuck in the US and has been there ever since, running his RTO from Minnesota. Marc shares his views on professional training and his firm belief that having fun while learning and getting help from a professional trainer can lead to future success. Marc has been serving the VET sector for 25 years so far and he strongly advocates for ‘edutainment'. Some main points from this interview with him are:Marc says it's our responsibility to push ourselves forward and become the best versions of ourselves. This is precisely what his organisation aims for; making sure people are capable enough to realise their true worth.People often do not understand the real importance of training. Trained professionals do better in organisations than those who are unsure about their designation.MRWED focuses on finding the creative side in all individuals and building a rewarding career.During COVID-19, the biggest challenge was to kick start the organisation after a massive break. Keeping the team motivated was nerve-wracking and came with its own challenges. However, as the CEO, Marc tried to shift everyone's focus towards the prize.Due to the pandemic, anxiety started building up in clients and Marc's team had to support them the best way they could. After all, understanding your client's needs and helping them sort their issues leads to better training.Communication is often overlooked. As a business owner, Marc reminds clients about the importance of communicating their ideas. This is the lifeblood of any organisation.People are born with a thirst for professional development and training. They are always on the lookout for a better opportunity that encourages and motivates them to move forward. Training becomes easy when people are willing to go through the motions. Without being dedicated to a dynamic way of learning, one cannot expect to succeed efficiently. Engagement strategies bring out the best in individuals, giving them the ability to control over their goals better. When times were tough, many people took care of Marc and his team. When times are bad, Marc considers it their responsibility to care for those who are willing to give it their all. Marc saw the hidden opportunity in the training industry and grabbed it with both hands, exactly what he expects from others to polish their lives.Marc is a firm believer in taking creative breaks in life. Every now and then, he showcases his artistic side and encourages others to do the same.Marc's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcr1/MRWED Training and Assessment's Website: https://www.mrwed.edu.au/trainers/marc-ratcliffeMarc's Website: https://www.marcratcliffe.com/Education in Isolation Website: https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/education-in-isolation-with-angela-connell-8ovJIuX_fyB/ Angela's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnell/

This is an online learning platform for the students."We, like many colleges throughout Australia suspended some of the payments, came up with payment plans and discounts, and we just really tried to assist them [our students] as best we could."What were the issues that came up with the online training?Did Richard have any issues with the transition to online with their students?"Doing the normal face-to-face and transferring that skill to online Zoom classes took a bit, but to be fair, the trainers transitioned incredibly well.""I think when the world is better, getting them [the students] to come back to class on a daily basis is going to be a bit of a struggle."What has been Richard's biggest achievement through this? What is he most proud of?During their last audit, 98% of their students would recommend Richard's company to family and friendsEven with the lockdown and pandemic, Richard's placement team had managed to successfully process work placements for their 105 students "People in Sydney were more reluctant to attend the classes face to face, whereas in Adelaide the response has been about 40 to 50% that returned to the face-to-face classes." Richard said this may be due to geographical and public transport issues in Sydney.Useful Links: Richard Finlayson on LinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/hospitality-cookery-management-trainingQuality Training & Hospitality College on LinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/company/quality-training-and-hospitality-collegeQuality Training & Hospitality College Website: https://www.qthc.edu.au/ Angela Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnellAngela Connell Website: https://vivacity.com.au/

And so far it's been working really well."If we were to go into a second lockdown, a second wave, how prepared does Christine feel compared to the first time? And what would Christine do differently this time? How did Christine come up with setting up a studio? And why did she do that?"So I had a spare room, just a little room. And so I just rushed out to Spotlight and grabbed some green fabric. I bought some lights and microphones. Just quickly rushed out and got a whole heap of stuff. And then just set that room up and the trainer can go in there. It's quiet, no one disturbs you, you can't hear anything else. We can put any background on it that we like. And it really was so efficient."How have the trainers been adapting to this different delivery method? And how does Christine feel with the trainers doing more recordings and interactions online?"The joy of being a small RTO is you can pivot really quickly."How was Christine able to get over that hurdle with trainers and having to adjust and change? They help business owners to have the confidence in their business as a pathway for them to have our remarkable life."We love working with small to medium-sized business owners. They're the backbone of every country. They employ more people, they take the biggest risks, and they're the innovators of the future."David shared his personal and professional background - his education, qualifications, and his love for business."I felt that the security of what I used to do, I had to put that aside and move into something that was going to be more impactful on the planet."What has been David's biggest challenge through isolation and COVID-19?What the pandemic did to David's company and his team was to speed things up in setting up their original plans through technology. They had been prepared for Covid but what they hadn't prepared for is the speed that their members were going to get affected."We put our business to the side and just said, 'Okay, we have to give unprecedented value now more than ever before'. Not only because our members need it, but also that meant it was important for our business to do the same thing as well. So we just put everything aside and we're going to double down on everything we do."What were the strategies that David went through to figure out their members' needs?David discussed in detail how they gathered the key information their members wanted and needed, and shared the strategy they used to process that data into an actionable plan that helped their members.According to David, the CEO of Google X predicted that the rate of change that humans move on is a very linear path, our ability to adapt to change. But what's happened is the globe and the world around, and the speed of change has surpassed the ability of humans to adapt to change. What are some things that can help other people win their business?"The only reason we are in business is to solve other peoples' problems."Angela believes that listening is key and that as a trainer you can learn so much from your clients. "Teach to learn."What does David think is his biggest achievement through all this?"The business-owner mindset is very much the same as someone who's deployed in a wartime operational environment."Useful Links: David Dugan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daviddugan/David Dugan Website: https://www.daviddugan.com/Abundance Global Website: https://www.abundance.global/Angela Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnellAngela Connell Website: https://vivacity.com.au/Education in Isolation Podcast: https://vivacity.com.au/podcast/
In this episode, we get to know more of Carl Taylor, the CEO of Automation Agency, as he talks about what Automation Agency does and who they serve.Carl shared what automation is for him, for his business, his team, and for his clients. He also shared what strategies they implemented and the challenges and achievements they're proud of during the pandemic. We also get to know Carl's thoughts on how technology will play a big role in shaping businesses behaviour, consumer behaviour, and more.Who Carl is and what he doesCarl thinks of himself as the freedom guy. He finds solutions to work smarter rather than harderAutomation Agency is Carl's primary company, a done-for-you implementation service, whether you're trying to do online marketing, marketing, and some of your other operations.Carl first started being an entrepreneur at 15. He is almost two decades in business. "Now when I think of automation, it's just me not doing it. Meaning automation includes people; human automation - other people doing the job or doing the task or parts of it. So it's a mix of tech and team when I think of automation."How did the transition happen from "I'm getting someone to do the job for me" to "There's possibly a business in this"?In 2011, Carl, who just started a new business as a coach and teaches people how to buy, build, and sell business, noticed that his fellow coaches are asking him technical stuff like how to automate emails and such. He then thought to quit coaching and help coaches implement the technical side of their businesses."Because I was getting frustrated at people, not always implementing what you tell them to do, I was like, 'I could just do this for people'."The original inspiration for Automations Agency was that Carl will build a team of people that he can use himself and he'll offer his technical services out to to other people which will help pay for his team and operations.Automation Agency is a flat monthly concierge service, where you get a team of graphic designers, web developers, automation people that you don't have to train. You just need to come up with the ideas and tell them what to do.The core problems they solve are hiring and managing staff, and training them which is expensive in time and can be costly, depending on where you're trying to hire. The challenge now with Carl and for Automation Agency is how to build a solution that matches where people are at. Clients get to a certain point where they've outgrown what Automation Agency does. Carl and his team are looking at how they can have a second tier of service offerings."It breaks my heart to think that people are going to cancel us. When now is the time they should actually lean on us. You need to pivot and change your business. Now's the time to use us more, not less.""One of our biggest challenges has always been churn. People kind of getting to a point where they either outgrew us because they needed something we didn't provide, or they ran out of ideas cause they didn't have that strategic educational mind. And so that's some of the areas we've been focusing on ourselves to deliver more value."Carl's biggest challenge within his businessCarl Taylor on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carltaylorau/Automation Agency Website: https://automationagency.com/Angela Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnellAngela Connell Website: https://vivacity.com.au/Education in Isolation Podcast: https://vivacity.com.au/podcast/

Since the company is small, David says they are nimble and from their client's perspective, there has been a huge change in the way their service to them works."The bigger change really, besides the fact that we were going from face-to-face to online, was bringing the clients along to recognise that we could do this and this would be effective."Delivery of their content was one big hurdle for David and his company. They were used to doing face-to-face sessions but had to adapt to online delivery because of the pandemic. They had to go back and look at what they're delivering to adapt. What strategies did David and his team implement to deliver their content online. How the new ways of delivering online have impacted David's clients and where he sees this going in the future."We've got to make sure that that full communication spectrum is available for everyone and not just within the room, but those in the rooms for the people online."How the gaming community uses software studios and multiple cameras to stream their content and get their audience engaged. David thinks these technologies can be applied to online training and sessions."We know that there's visual learners, audio learners, and let-me-do-it learners. We need to cater to all of them."David also shares one biggest challenge with their clients which is how IT departments can become an obstacle on how employees can deliver their content online due to their equipment's privacy and secrecy concerns. Out of all of this, what has been David's biggest achievement? David thinks that workplaces and how we use offices are impacted with the pandemic. He also shared about the 5 "stakeholders" that need to be considered in relation to flexible working conditions.David tells us more about what he is teaching and his work."The business world will continue to go on and we need to make sure that the tools we're putting in place and the way we work with each other continue."Angela shared how the pandemic opened up opportunities for tapping into talent for job opportunities as we're not restricted geographically.David and Angela discuss the importance of industry consultation on doing business, content delivery, hiring talent for the business, and more.David Shirley on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidmshirley/ Flex We Are Website: https://www.flexweare.com/Angela Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnellAngela Connell Website: https://vivacity.com.au/Education in Isolation Podcast: https://vivacity.com.au/podcast/

She leads a team of virtual Chief Financial Officers to find solutions and key strategies to maximise revenue and profit while making sure the cash flow is available to position for growth. Why do you hire a CFO and who are their typical clients?"That's why our name is Grow CFO because we're really positioning those fast-growth companies or the companies that are really positioned to take it to the next level, and then making sure their financial strategy underneath what they do is really sound."Do you have to be big to have a CFO?Deborah shares that their ability to interpret what a small business needs is different from what a big company CFO might require, and they are able to take cross-industry experience and being across multiple countries to allow them to suggest what services they offer work for a specific sector.Deborah's biggest challenge since COVID-19 hit"Our biggest challenge was to work out exactly how we could get our customers pivoting as fast as possible, so that they had a plan in place so that they could continue paying us."This challenge has led Deborah and her team to develop interesting strategies for them and their clients and ways to be paid. One client in the events industry went from almost having their doors shut to having a six-figure month.Another client experienced a three-times valuation rise since October and are listing their education-based company on the New York Stock Exchange towards the end of this year"Remember that even though people are struggling with cash flow, there's no less money in the world. It's actually more money being printed. It's just not flowing. So it's a matter of actually securing that cash and securing that capital.""Never leave anyone that is unhelped. That is part of our core philosophy.""It was fairly obvious to me that we had to have a solution that as long as we had sufficient cash flow ourselves, we would be okay. So let's work out how we can make sure that everybody else has sufficient and not worry about there not being enough."According to Deborah, it is non traditional thinking that she learnt prior to Covid that is helping her and the company for their clients. She mentioned that she has to find a way to not work outside of the system but to make the system work for her, and that the system should work for you, not against you. What is Deborah most proud of what's happened and what has been her biggest achievement? The commitment to give, considering that one of their core values is philanthropy, even in these pandemic times is her biggest achievement.Deborah Harris on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deborahtheentrepreneur/Deborah Harris Website: https://www.growcfoco.com/Grow CFO Co on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-grow-cfo-co/Angela Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnellAngela Connell Website: https://vivacity.com.au/Education in Isolation Website: https://vivacity.com.au/podcast/

So what does an event photographer do when the entire country goes into lockdown and the event industry comes to an almost-overnight halt. In this episode, I interview my father, Trevor Connell. Trevor owns an event photography business and publishes Australasian Special Events, a news and information service for the event industry. Trevor shares with us how the pandemic affected his business, how it's affected the industry as a whole, and how it showed him a great opportunity for the industry to be able to hold live and recorded events through online delivery. Episode Highlights: Who is Trevor and what does he do?What Trevor thinks has been the biggest challenge to the event industry since COVID-19In the event industry, they talk about a "Black Friday" which is the 13th of March where the event industry was announced to be shut down."The following Monday after that weekend, all of our business for the next six months had gone. And so everyone in the industry had to very quickly turn around and come up with a strategy to get through the next six months.""The first things we saw were events going online. ""There has been a massive difference to how we're attending events. And what I've found personally is that we can actually have more of our team members attend these events now cause they're online."Trevors solutions to the social-distancing rules that affected the event industryLive casting for weddings, funerals, and business eventsEvent Pix business model of ‘vox pops' and social media clips helped with their adaptabilityAn online delivery model is essential for all in the training industryIt will be a while before international students can return to Australia in large numbersAccording to Trevor, what people haven't really worked out yet with using online as a delivery method for events, although there are methods for it, is monetizing these online events. This is particularly because, with the younger generation, they are used to getting everything for free."I think there is a big opportunity out there to be able to educate the industry and educate people who are delivering training and who were using that as a method to get new clients."Trevor's biggest achievement and learning through the process of adapting to the pandemic"There's been so many new ideas that have come up different ways of delivering training, different ways of delivering events, which I think is going to propel us forward with how we're going to be delivering events in the future.""You imagine if this had happened to us 10 years ago, we wouldn't have coped because we wouldn't have been able to get it all online."What keeps Trevor motivatedTrevor started his own podcast talking with people in the event industryUseful Links: Trevor Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/trevor-connell/ Event Pix on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/eventpix/ Event Pix Website: https://www.eventpix.com.au/Australasian Special Events Website: https://specialevents.com.au Angela Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnellAngela Connell Website: https://vivacity.com.au/Education in Isolation Website: https://vivacity.com.au/podcast/
