This milestone episode proves that accountants can change lives—and legacies—every single day.The DisruptorsWith Liz FarrIn its milestone 100th episode, The Disruptors podcast pulls out all the stops with a powerful conversation featuring Paul Dunn, a four-time TEDx speaker, accounting innovator, and co-founder of the global giving platform B1G1. A true visionary, Dunn has spent decades redefining what it means to be an accountant—and his message to the profession is as bold and inspiring as ever. Too often, he says, firms get bogged down creating long-winded declarations no one remembers. The real transformation comes when a firm becomes truly impact-driven.“What if you turned that around... and you became impact-driven, and you're able to say as a result, this month, look at what we did. We created these impacts in the community.”

Masami's vision is simple yet profound: small, consistent actions can create massive ripple effects of kindness and change. Masami shares why she believes the power of small actions and why “thinking big” should always be paired with “acting small” to truly transform the world. She illustrates this beautifully by sharing the example of Miren, a swim school owner who links every swim lesson to providing access to clean water for children worldwide. We also explore the importance of kindness in business, the role of long-term thinking, and how family values can inspire sustainable leadership. To inspire everyone who lays their ears on this episode, Paul Dunn tunes into the PPMP Podcast. It's difficult to sum up Paul's achievements in just one sentence, but he is the Co-Founder of B1G1, an organisation that channels effort to giving back to the community through businesses.  Paul starts off by sharing the origin story of B1G1, which is an initiative with a mission to “create a world that's full of giving”. It's a model designed for small businesses around the globe, where they can donate money to associated charities when someone buys a product. You'll also hear Paul discuss the Allied Health industry, making a difference in people's lives, and shifting the spirit of your business and the parallels in life. Topics covered on B1G1, Allied Health, and being a business for good: Making a difference, and the inspiring origin story of B1G1. Being purposeful and having a purpose, helping people change their story, and the importance of looking outside rather than inside yourself. Why businesses need to be creating meaning, tiny things making a big difference, and thinking about the impact you make and being ready to make an impact. Together, a small community of his peers shares luxury experiences, deal flow, philanthropic donations, service providers, funds, and access to the broader Family Office Network (FON) headquartered in West Palm Beach, Florida USA. For more than 10 years, Maxwell has been giving back to his alma mater, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) where he mentored Executive MBA candidates during their international immersion program with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, USA. Host Helen Lee continues her interview with Masami Sato, Founder and CEO of B1G1 whose original name stands for BUY1GIVE1, where “every time somebody purchases something, something could be given to benefit others, to create a positive impact.” It has become an initiative that helps businesses embed social impact into their everyday operations. This global giving initiative is rapidly expanding into a global movement that makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful by focusing funds towards more than 500 carefully selected high-impact giving projects. Masami is also a best selling Amazon author with the books ‘Legacy : The Sustainable Development Goals in Action', ‘Joy : The Gift of Acceptance, Trust and Love', and ‘Giving Business – Creating the Maximum Impact in the Meaning-Driven World.' A two time TEDx speaker and frequent podcast, event and media interviewee, Masami spreads her message of philanthropy and a new way of global business and is now the latest treasured guest of Transform and Thrive. Helen and Masami discuss the culture of B1G1 and its exponential growth, the concepts of targets and goals, the mechanism of B1G1 and what happens when you join and how we move forward together, openly supporting one another towards a better future and an improved humanity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even though B1G1's growth has been phenomenal, there is still much more room for growth due to the proliferation of the huge number of SMEs still out there that can join the initiative.  The 2025 target for B1G1 is 12,000 businesses, but as it is already growing exponentially, Masami is not limited to this number as she is already looking for innovative new ways to reach and enrol the millions of small businesses still out there.    Regardless of all our projections and planning, the future is never truly foreseeable. We can have targets, but less measurable goals such as fixing climate change, are very difficult to pinpoint as complete and successful.  When you become a B1G1 business you have access to their platform with your own account. With that you can find the impact activities from around the world that you can contribute to and link to your business transactions automatically, directly linking the number of business actions taken to a given activity.  These businesses can create milestones to celebrate once they have reached a certain level or number of giving transactions so they can note their success with the amount of positive effect they have had instead of traditional KPIs and financial markets.    BEST MOMENTS ‘We definitely need more people like her in our world right now, who are not merely pontificating on what's right or wrong, nor slamming what they deem to be wrong or bad without really contributing towards the change that they and we all want to see in our world.' – Helen ‘By 2030, by the completion of the Sustainable Development Goals come to fruition, we need to achieve all of these important things, so all of the programs together. We have a limited time to achieve these things before things get too late.' - Masami ‘I have an optimistic part and a conservative part. The conservative part makes me go ‘ok let's come up with a reasonable KPI. Overdelivering and under-promising is a natural inclination I have but at the same time, actually being open to the exponential ideas and goals is also very important.' – Masami ‘That daily success is actually very important, because that part we can ensure, but the future one might, kind of, change.' - Masami  ‘The initiative has a subscription model. Businesses are contributing a small fee to the membership subscription. This helps us to drive our initiative and cover all of the costs too, so we make sure that when businesses are providing a tree then what they contribute, 100% of that will go to the project.' – Masami  ‘As long as we are open, our hearts are open and our minds are open we learn from each other and support each other.' – Helen    ‘More than anything else I think she has done a tremendous job in building B1G1 with Paul and her team and the members and is a fine example of how we can all contribute and collectively come together to make our world work for the majority of us.' – Helen ABOUT THE HOST HELEN LEE Founder & Principal Coach of Lee Heiss Coaching, Helen Lee coached thousands of clients worldwide and multinationals in Asia-Pacific in the last three decades. Host Helen Lee interviews Masami Sato, Founder and CEO of B1G1 (BUY1GIVE1), a global giving initiative that is rapidly expanding into a global movement. By helping businesses embed the process of giving right into their everyday operations, B1G1 makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful by focusing funds towards 500 carefully selected high-impact giving projects. Helen and Masami discuss how she became an entrepreneur and change maker, the start of B1G1, the power of small, positive life philosophy and the changes we need to make within ourselves to step forward.  This includes Masami's idea of harnessing gratitude for the positives in our business, making full use of the power of collaboration among many worldwide and turning this combined positive energy into a force for good! Do check out https://b1g1.com/ and if it resonates with you, do be part of that force for good in this particular way, for the wellbeing of humanity and our world! KEY TAKEAWAYS Masami was born in Japan, with hard working parents in the corporate world. Shy and not outspoken but very curious, her first international journeys taught her how similar people throughout the world are and also how kind.  When she became a mother, she thought about all the children in the world not as lucky as her own and this spurred her on to become an entrepreneur to fund philanthropic efforts with her own food company.  By breaking down into small, daily activities, the need to fund giving activities becomes habitual and simple, with more businesses being able to access these giving models, creating a larger groundswell of philanthropy and a movement of kindness and giving. As recently as May 2021, B1G1 had already facilitated more than 193 million giving impacts. Yet, amazingly, the numbers have now surged to more than 303 million in just over a year! The message of B1G1 spreads exponentially from business to business through their contacts with each other.  Instead of seeing lack and limitation within ourselves, that add up to a sense of powerlessness to make a difference and inaction to take any steps to help transform our world, we can all take small actions daily and collectively create a massive impact. We are starting to recognise the flaw in the model of short term profit maximisation and we are starting to think about long term implications. Awareness of the negativity of the old models is growing.  Masami truly embodies the Higher Intelligence that we are being called to align with and focuses on all that is important with such grace, energy and determination by simply doing what we can each day instead of obsessing over what we cannot do, and with the support and contribution of her husband Paul Dunn who is Chairman and Co-Founder of B1G1, their team and members.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I was very touched and inspired by how like, no matter how little some people had, there was so much generosity.' – Masami ‘Then I thought, what if instead of trying to do a big thing, one day, what if we did something small every day, from today? That was the start of the idea of B1G1.' – Masami ‘We always see ‘big' things in the media and everywhere. Quite often, those big things could be negative big things, like climate change or war, or refugees being displaced and all that kind of overwhelming big issues. Then, we feel powerless, sad or negative.' – Masami ‘Actually our day to day actions, when we do it together, rather than alone, can be very powerful. And by transforming our regular habits, we could actually really transform our destiny. That's why the power of small is important.' – Masami ‘Because of what you've done it's growing to that point where it can grow even further and really fast now, is that true?' – Helen ‘Because humans are afflicted with this concept of not being good enough, this false idea of not being good enough. So, it holds us back, this idea of perfection.' – Helen  ‘It's very difficult to make a judgement on what's better or what's more important.  What we can do instead is to appreciate the fact that all these things could be important. But the difference is bringing together different actions, different aspirations, different people, different experiences and ideas, is really more important in enabling us all to move forward. I think that actually makes our journey more enjoyable and meaningful.' – Masami  'As we become braver, understand things more, respect each other and not jump onto judgment but really reflect what we can do today, and put in place certain actions, rather than feeling overwhelmed by things we cannot change. If all of these businesses start to align together with the new set of values, then we can actually change this world and create greater sustainability. But it is a critical time, whether we will have time to turn things around.' - Masami ‘If we could all come together with different intentions but also with the shared understanding that we are in it together, we are not individuals. As a whole we share this place together and if this place cannot exist anymore, none of us will be here.' – Masami  ‘Her views carry what I call the essence of Higher Intelligence, which I have talked about quite often in my various episodes, especially the solo ones.' - Helen ‘We all have access to this Higher Intelligence and are called to increasingly align with and embody it now. So, this is a very heartening interview for me, to see it embodied and exercised in this courageous lady.' – Helen  ‘It is a simple, powerful and delightful approach for all of us to adopt, to get off our behinds and contribute positively towards creating our collective destiny and world.' – Helen   ABOUT THE HOST HELEN LEE Founder & Principal Coach of Lee Heiss Coaching, Helen Lee coached thousands of clients worldwide and multinationals in Asia-Pacific in the last three decades. Humanity has been immersed in a culture of what we can get, much more than what we can give, when the essence of our true nature is love and a generosity of spirit.  But there is an increasing number of business leaders worldwide who are influencing the shift and return to our natural caring and giving aspects.   And Paul Dunn and his wife Masami Sato have been doing just that through B1G1 in the last 15 years.  Being caring, giving and loving coupled with making a difference as an integral part of our daily lives not only help us personally but makes good business sense as well, as they and other leaders have shown and Paul speaks about in this episode.  Helen and Paul discuss a new attitude to ageing, enjoying every moment, combined impacts, the future of business and governments, the lessons of history, the motivations of social enterprises and the progress of B1G1. KEY TAKEAWAYS We have been living in a culture that focuses on what we can get, with a scarcity mindset installed in most of our methods and systems. Paul and his wife Mesami Sato offer through B1G1 a new model which provides small and medium businesses worldwide an opportunity to install a giving system to more than 500 carefully selected, high impact projects that they can choose from. B1G1 is now growing exponentially in terms of its number of members and giving impacts they create together, making a real difference to lives of many worldwide.  We can also look forward to all companies becoming social enterprises in 15 years' time, and come together to be a collaborative force for good.  Paul is 28,771 days old at the time of this recording, no longer celebrating birthdays but marking every day we are alive on this planet. The opportunity that we have to capture moments daily during our time here deserves more than being measured in years. If we see only the worst in history, it destroys our capacity to take action. Yet there are so many points in history where people behaved magnificently, and inspiringly. Acknowledging these points can help us act (to do good and make a positive impact) in even small ways and we don't even have to wait for the future, but live for now, do things now, make our world a better place now, each in our own way. Businesses come alive with truly engaged employees and enthusiastic operations when they become social enterprises. Profit can be uninspiring for many in the corporate world, but creating global changes can truly energise and motivate leaders and employees greatly. More than 301 million giving impacts have been achieved by B1G1. This illustrates the growing impact of social enterprises. An impact can be a planted tree, a child provided with schooling, water provided to a community and anything that raises a smile.    BEST MOMENTS ‘Whatever that business activity may be, they can be committed to doing good for someone or something, some place in the world, be it planting a tree, saving someone from sex trafficking, providing clean water or building a school, etc.' – Helen ‘Reality is that there's a lot of stuff going on. “To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic, it is based on the fact that human history brings a history of not only cruelty but also of compassion, of sacrifice, of courage and kindness.”' – Paul ‘Very often people wonder  what kind of impact or difference they can make, just them. It's about our gathering together that creates that impact.' - Helen 'The government was doing a survey and the survey basically said ‘do you think we should offer tax incentives for social enterprises?' I'm sure the people doing the survey expected me to say yes. My response was that in 15 years we will ALL be social enterprises.' – Paul ‘Why wouldn't I be living the legacy everyday?' – Paul ‘Our lives would be greatly enriched if we did this and be driven by something much greater than ourselves.' – Helen  GUEST INFO Paul Dunn is Chairman of B1G1 (BUY1GIVE1) which helps businesses embed giving right into the heart of everyday activities and makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful. Host Helen Lee continues her discussion of a new style of business for a transformed world with an interview with Paul Dunn, Chairman of B1G1 (BUY1GIVE1) Business for Good, a global giving initiative that has grown into a global movement. B1G1 helps businesses embed giving right into the heart of everyday activities and makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful. It focuses on connecting small to medium sized businesses with more than 500 carefully selected high-impact giving projects. Paul is a four time TEDx speaker, winner of the Global Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to the Accounting Profession, entrepreneur, master presenter and keynote speaker. Known for building great businesses, he was also featured in Forbes, alongside Richard Branson in a 2014 feature on Disruptive Business Ideas That Worked. Helen and Paul discuss the origin of B1G1, the philosophy of world change through business and what he; Founder, CEO & his wife Masami Sato; his team and a growing number of members have achieved for the world.      KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul gets out of bed every morning to help business owners and their teams create more impact on our world and in their businesses than they ever could have imagined possible. “What if we were able to create a world where every time business was done, something great happened in the world?”, Masami asked Paul in 2007 to consider. "Imagine if every time someone bought a cup of coffee, a child in need got access to life-saving water?  Or when an author sells a book, a tree gets planted?", Masami explained. This momentous conversation 15 years ago gave birth to their setting up B1G1 with a vision of life-changing impact being created every time a business sells a product or service.   Today, we can go beyond being only profit and even purpose driven to being impact driven.  We can also move from solving for problems to solving for potential, just as Nature does and Paul refers to, in this episode. What B1G1 does is let you look at micro impacts that have incredible outcomes. All of us at some point know that there is something more, but what we often don't know is how to achieve it. Rather than doing something big in the future, we can do something small right now, every day. This is the philosophy of B1G1. This is the power of small. Paul, Masami and their team run B1G1 from Singapore. Together with their members, they have amazingly created more than 301 million giving impacts to date.  Both the number of members and impacts are growing exponentially as well. B1G1 members can choose from more than 500 high impact giving projects under the categories of education, environment, food, health, shelter, income generation, human rights, and life enhancement.  Check out https://b1g1.com/ for more information and if you feel called to do so, become a member making your own impacts on the world today.  You can select from 4 levels of membership. B1G1 has grown from being a business to being a movement. It is about creating a world that is full of giving by shifting the spirit of businesses to that of a giving one, thereby helping the entire organisation or team transform in the process.  "We are all at our best when we are giving," as Paul points out. It allows for a specific transaction-based giving model to small and medium enterprises worldwide.  Helen has created a global group online program called ‘Invincible You : The Hero's Journey' to support everyone in the world rise and thrive during these phenomenal and challenging times. It is based on the methodology she created more than two decades ago (honed and upgraded over the years), that has since impacted thousands of people worldwide from Chairmen and Presidents of conglomerates to children and the whole range in between.     BEST MOMENTS ‘We were talking about the distinction between talking about things and actually doing things. So, chairmen are often thought about as thinking about things. And, by the way, it's very important for chairmen to do that.' – Paul ‘“The storyteller sets the vision, the values and the agenda for an entire generation yet to come.” (Steve Jobs, 1994). When I read that I realised that all of the things that we do are not about us, it's about something greater than us.' - Paul  ‘All of a sudden, once you get that new understanding, what happens is you just see things that were there all the time but you never saw them before.' – Paul ‘I'd like to know what's the difference for you before B1G1 and after. Because it was life changing, right?' – Helen ‘If you ask me that now, I would add “to recognise that you can just create an enormous difference in the world by doing awesome things once you look at the world in a new way.” I would refer to that as you can become impact driven as opposed to purpose driven. When that happens you get what happened to me and that is you just become curiouser and curiouser and curiouser, and in that curiosity you continue to find just incredible realisations that you didn't have before.' – Paul  'The pandemic has taught us that we are all connected. It's no longer about me, it's about we. When you start to get that we need to move from self to something bigger than self, from value to values, from transactions to belonging, from income to impact, from profit to purpose, everything there (on the right hand side of what I said) is about humanity.' - Paul  ‘“If working apart we are a force powerful enough to destabilise our planet, surely working together we are powerful enough to save it.” said Sir David Attenborough at Cop26 in 2021. Once you get that, you automatically have this thing that kind of powers you, which is that thing that is bigger than yourself.' - Paul  'We move from the wisdom of one to the wisdom of many. When we find a way of combining that, then we can do great things together.' - Paul  ‘Masami is both the founder and CEO of B1G1, and the couple and their team are based in Singapore together with their B1G1 members worldwide have created more than 301 million giving impacts to date. Isn't that incredible?' – Helen ‘Our personal and corporate or business worlds are already shifting. People are becoming more conscious of not only our interconnection but our need to make a difference and to care enough to do so.' – Helen ‘I see us rising together, transforming and thriving together. This is indeed a very special time for us. As I wrote two years ago, we have our work cut out for us and need to have many more people join us, in making good across our world, across all fields of reality from our environment and climate justice to justice for all humans and all sentient beings everywhere, indeed.' - Helen   GUEST RESOURCES B1G1 website https://b1g1.com/   ABOUT THE HOST HELEN LEE Founder & Principal Coach of Lee Heiss Coaching, Helen Lee coached thousands of clients worldwide and multinationals in Asia-Pacific in the last three decades. Our guest on the podcast this week is Steve Pipe, a former UK Entrepreneur of The Year who is now giving away all of his time and intellectual property to help make the world a better place. Specifically, his goal is to unlock 100 million days of help for people in need by 2030. And currently, he is at 28 million days which is just incredible. It's true that Steve is an accountant by trade, but he's not your stereotypical accountant as you will soon hear as he says “Chartered accountant by name, not by nature”. Today we're going to be talking about one of Steve's greatest passions and that is making a real difference in our world, and encouraging more of us to do the same. He shares his own hard-earned wisdom around business, capitalism, and the quest for never-ending profits, and explains how we can reimagine business, to become a force for good. During our conversation, Steve posed some fascinating questions that really give you a clear idea of ultimately what matters most to you and how you can integrate that knowledge and use it to drive actions that do create a more positive impact in our world. Listen in as we talk through how business can do well and do good at the same time. Steve passionately make a business case for ALL business to do good, not just because it's the right thing to do but also because of how that impacts the business's bottom line profitability in exponential ways. He also describes how we can each make a difference in our own life in easy, small steps. If you are in business or working within business and you truly care about the future of our planet then I encourage you to listen to this passionate conversation for insights. I suspect you'll enjoy Steve's perspective on what needs to happen for us to begin to rethink how we do business and its impact on the world and I guess you might be pleasantly surprised that it's not as hard as you might think. Key Takeaways Steve's life journey has brought him much success in the financial industry and how he is now working for free on his passion project. How your business can have a more positive impact on the world (and you too!) The coffee shop metaphor. The value of 1cent to make a real difference in the lives of others. The logical data-driven argument for why shifting your approach to become a force for good is also good for business. In the past few years, it seems like more companies have exploded onto the scene with great big missions. And older companies are making waves for their causes, too. You have companies like TOMS, with their B1G1 model for giving away free shoes, or Patagonia donating a $10M tax-break to climate causes.  On the surface, it may seem like these companies are just doing a better business strategy, but there is more to it than just a pricing strategy. There's a soul to it. There's storytelling. There's an evolution happening in business. Our guest today, Yanik Silver, is the leading expert on this evolution. Founder of Maverick1000 and two-time Oscar Meyer shootout champion, Yanik is the author of “Evolved Enterprise,” a book that delves into why this evolution — and revolution — is taking over.  I've learned so much from Yanik's book, so I'm super excited for you all to hear some of his great ideas.  Here's what we're unpacking today: What makes an enterprise evolved Why evolved enterprises are taking over How you can evolve your company Why sharing your story matters This post is based on a podcast with Yanik Silver. In this episode, Paul Dunn joins Anna Clare Harper to discuss creating a positive impact and lasting legacy by giving back as part of business - in property and beyond. This is especially important in the property sector, which has built a reputation for not quite ‘getting' the social responsibility agenda! Paul is an award-winning global social entrepreneur, 4x TEDx speaker & Founder of B1G1 (which stands for ‘Buy 1, Give 1'). He was also one of Hewlett Packard's first 10 team members in Australia, has successfully built and exited his own computer businesses and has mentored thousands of business leaders along the way. Highlights of this episode include: Disrupting the old model of guilt-based giving Engaging the people you work with - your team, clients and even tenants - through making a tangible and meaningful impact as part of business How giving can bring heart, soul, purpose and meaning into your business from day one, and enable you to build a positive legacy of contribution over consumption The idea that it's businesses that can change our world for the better, not governments.
