Substance use is a major factor in foster care cases; in 2017 alone, more than half of the children who entered care under age 5 did so because of parental drug use. Addiction is an issue that runs parallel to the foster care community, and it's a struggle that agency workers and foster parents often witness firsthand in the lives of the families they serve. For those of us who have never battled with addiction, it can be easy to think we have nothing in common with parents whose substance use results in their children being removed from their care. However, my guest today is here to help us see these people through a new lens—one that emphasizes compassion, understanding, and shared humanity. Christina Dent is the Founder and Vice President of Mission at End It For Good, a nonprofit that invites people to support approaches to drug addiction that prioritize life, preserve families, and promote public safety. As an adoptive mom and former foster mom, Christina's experiences in foster care ignited a passion in her for finding better solutions for addiction. In this episode, she shares the realities of addiction and drug use, how drug addiction intersects with foster care, why we should reframe the way we think and speak about those struggling with addiction, and much more. What if Mississippi could lead the nation in turning the tide on addiction? In this episode, Christina Dent talks with Dr. Dan Edney, Mississippi's State Health Officer and a physician specializing in addiction medicine. They dive into the quiet revolution taking place in our state—from expanding access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to legalizing fentanyl test strips to saturating communities with naloxone. Dr. Edney shares how Mississippi became one of only five states to reduce overdose deaths for two years in a row—and why saving lives must be prioritized. They discuss why harm reduction saves taxpayer dollars, how recovery truly happens, and what still needs to change—like ending the ban on syringe services. You'll also hear about Mississippi's groundbreaking MSUD program, offering free treatment and MAT through local health departments, and why Dr. Edney believes it's time to treat addiction as a health issue. Whether you're new to these conversations or deeply engaged in reform, this episode will leave you with real hope.
Christina Dent and Bryan Mauk discuss what the research actually says about different types of drug treatment and what helps more people recovery. Did you know that some mutual aid groups have their participants introduce themselves as "a competent person" rather than "an addict"? Does it make a difference in outcomes? Christina Dent, founder of End It For Good, Author - Curious, shares her journey of understanding addiction and advocating for a new approach to drug policy. She recounts her experience as a foster parent and meeting a mother struggling with addiction, which challenged her preconceived notions. This led her to question the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in addressing drug use and to explore alternative solutions. She discusses the Rat Park experiment and the importance of addressing the underlying reasons for substance use. Christina emphasizes the need for personalized pathways to recovery and a shift away from a one-size-fits-all approach. The illegal drug economy, fueled by drug prohibition, incentivizes crime and violence by providing a financial incentive. Gangs, cartels, and terrorist organizations are primarily funded through the proceeds of the drug trade. Prohibition also leads to the production of unregulated and dangerous drugs, such as fentanyl, which has contributed to the overdose crisis. The current approach to drug policy is reactive and fear-based, and it is important to shift towards a health-centered approach that addresses the root causes of addiction. Regular people can lead the charge for change and create a movement towards policy reform. She grew up in a conservative, Christian home and earned a degree in Biblical Studies with an emphasis in Christian Ministry from Belhaven University. As a young adult, Christina assumed she had a solid understanding of how the world works. That changed when she and her husband became foster parents in 2014. The neat bow she had tied around her mental box of how the world works began to unravel. What had previously been a category of people in her mind, people addicted to drugs, now had a name, face, and an infant son sleeping in the extra bedroom down the hall. Her foster care experience gave her an up-close look at the realities of addiction, drug use, and the far-reaching impact of our drug laws. This became the catalyst for months of reading, questions, and listening as she tried to reconcile her beliefs as a Christian with the pain and suffering she saw first-hand. What she learned changed her mind. The laws she thought were the answer to keep people from using drugs she now saw as causing more harm than help to people made in God's image. Christina founded End It For Good out of her desire to invite others to listen to the voices directly impacted by our drug laws. She hopes that more people will explore the root causes of drug-related harm and consider a different approach. She wrote the book Curious: A Foster Mom's Discovery of an Unexpected Solution to Drugs and Addiction to share her story and the research and experiences that changed her mind about the best path forward to help people thrive, even in a world where harmful drugs exist. Christina is married to her college sweetheart Thomas, and they live in Ridgeland, MS, with their three sons. On the weekends, you can find her biking, in a hammock reading a biography, or playing board games with the family. A week before the first debate, polls show President Joe Biden flipping the script among independent voters. What could be driving this shift, and why is Robert F. Kennedy Jr. not making it to the debate stage? Senators introduced a bill that would add Russia to the list of state sponsors of terrorism in an attempt to further isolate the country from the international community. As the opioid crisis continues to grip America, two mothers from different backgrounds are collaborating to change the way Americans treat addiction and the overdose crisis. We talk to Pat Roos, a liberal university professor, and Christina Dent, a conservative evangelical Christian, about how they crossed political divisions and found common ground in their solutions. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

End It For Good Christina Dent We are well aware that drug addictions are, basically, a pandemic in our society today. It is not only a problem in major metropolitan cities, but it literally crosses all social and economic boundary's. I know. I was addicted to pain killers a few back after almost 7 years of use. My father had a drug problem. One of my brothers as well. My guest today in Christina Dent, the founder and president of “End It For Good,” a 501-c-3 non-profit formed in 2019. Christina Dent is a politically conservative Christian, who supported criminalizing drugs, until she became a foster parent and saw, up close, the negative effects the current system was perpetuating on those who needed the most help. She researched why drug-related harm was not decreasing and she became convinced it was because the criminal justice system is simply the wrong tool to be used for addressing the drug problem. Christina was on our program a couple of years ago and we had a great, in-depth conversation about her efforts to help correct the societal problem of criminalizing those who use drugs instead of creating real solutions to the issue. Amen! Christina recently released her new book on this topic, titled, “Curious: A Foster Mom's Discovery of an Unexpected Solution to Drugs and Addiction.” With that being said, help me welcome back to the program, Christina Dent! Christina, thank you for coming back on the program today! I do appreciate it! For the sake of those that may not have heard our prior interview a couple of years ago, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Christina Dent?” I want to start with your book, “Curious: A Foster Mom's Discovery of an Unexpected Solution to Drugs and Addiction.” Why did you write this book and why publish now? You had some very serious situations happen to you in life. You were involved in a serious train accident. Both your mother and father died of cancer. How did all of this shape you as you continued on with your life? I remember, from our prior interview, when you compared the war on drugs with prohibition in this nation back in the early 1900's. Can you briefly go over that for our listeners? Last time you were on, you talked about what the nation of Portugal did in their “war on drugs.” But they went about winning their war in a very different way than we have in the United States – and they achieved a very different outcome. Tell us about that… As you have been doing all of this, what has been the hardest part you've experienced in fighting this battle? What is the number one message you would like your readers to get from this book? As we get ready to close, let's talk for a minute about your organization, “End it For Good.” How does your organization try to bridge this gap we have been talking about? Christina, this is so interesting. You and your organization are doing a marvelous work. I learned a lot from preparing for this interview as well as right now, just talking with you. I also believe our listeners have learned a lot as well and may now have new perspective of things. If someone wanted to get in touch with you or
Will Morgan's story is highlighted in Christina Dent's new book, Curious: A Foster Mom's Discovery of an Unexpected Solution to Drugs and Addiction. On this episode, we talk to Will as well as his wife, Sarah, hearing her journey of supporting Will through his years-long journey with chronic pain and prescription opioids. They offer a window into the other side of the war on prescription opioids - the patients who struggle with chronic pain and now have a harder time finding the medications they need. And yet, the very thing that at one point helped Will became part of the problem. Their story illustrates the tremendous complexity of prescription opioids and the lived experiences of the people who need them and the loved ones supporting them. There are no easy answers here, but a story that gives us a view into the real lives and families impacted by opioids and the policies that govern access to them. *My recording software defaulted my microphone to my built-in computer mic, and I was not aware of this until after we finished recording. I apologize in advance for the below-average sound quality of my microphone. In this episode I talk to Christina Dent. Christina is the founder and president of the organization End it for Good, which challenges the popular narrative that the best way to solve drug abuse and addiction is through the criminal justice system. Christina argues that the war on drugs has been a failure and that instead of criminalizing drug use we need to take a restorative approach to addiction. She discusses her move as a conservative Christian away from the criminal justice approach to drugs, how the problem of drug abuse and addiction has impacted our society, and how ending the drug war might actually enable us to solve the problem of drug abuse in our country. Christina is an author, TEDx speaker, and perpetual question-asker. The laws she thought were the answer to keep people from using drugs she now saw as causing more harm than help to people made in God's image.Christina founded End It For Good out of her desire to invite others to listen to the voices directly impacted by our drug laws. She hopes that more people will explore the root causes of drug-related harm and consider a different approach. She wrote the book Curious: A Foster Mom's Discovery of an Unexpected Solution to Drugs and Addiction to share her story and the research and experiences that changed her mind about the best path forward to help people thrive, even in a world where harmful drugs exist.Christina is married to her college sweetheart Thomas, and they live in Ridgeland, MS, with their three sons. On the weekends, you can find her biking, in a hammock reading a biography, or playing board games with the family. Christina Dent developed a passion for ending a criminal justice approach to drugs after she saw that it created a cycle of harm instead of treating the problem.

Coming Up for Air - Families Speak to Families about Addiction
Christina Dent, founder of drug policy advocacy nonprofit End It For Good, discusses her voyage as a foster mom who'd never seen addiction up-close. The experiences she gained through fostering led her to dramatically rethink her stance on drugs and the criminal justice system.
For two years, twin brothers Chris and Jeff George along with their friend Derik Nolan, ran the largest pain clinic in the United States. They didn't really care about alleviating people's pain. They cared about the profits selling opioids could make. Florida's laws didn't address the fact that none of the men had any medical training to help addicts. They had no training in counseling to help addicts. They were in it because the money was big. Unfortunately, the addictions the drugs fueled were even bigger. This week's guest, Christina Dent, founded End It For Good out of her desire to invite others to listen to the voices directly impacted by our drug laws. She hopes that more people will explore the root causes of drug-related harm and consider a different approach. She is currently writing a book on the research and experiences that changed her mind about the best path forward to help people thrive, even in a world where harmful drugs exist. Christiana and I had an incredible conversation, and what I learned made me think a lot about 1 Peter 5:8 from the CEV, which says: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Keeping ourselves sober in the sense of being clear minded applies to us all. The enemy of our souls is actively searching for ways to destroy us like the lions we see on the Discovery Channel. They don't chase after the strongest gazelle in the herd. They want to find one who is weak, who is apart from the support of the herd, and isn't able to notice the danger they are in until it's too late. Addiction to ANYTHING can cloud our judgment and make us vulnerable to the evil that is in this world. I say this a lot when I'm giving safety information to people - criminals are looking for the easiest targets they can find. They don't want problems, they want to give YOU problems. We have to be watchful like Scripture says, and that's hard to do when our senses are dulled and we allow ourselves to be distracted. And yes, I said “allowed” ourselves. We can learn to focus on what we really need to and block out all of the rest, like service dogs do. I've put a link to a video of dogs being trained to ignore loud noises, toys, and even snacks so they can protect the person they are going to be caring for. Maybe we need the same training to become the best service people we can be! Just for fun, I've also put in a link to a service dog in training who we all probably look like at one time or another. In this interview, I enjoy a great conversation with Christina Dent who shares how becoming a foster parent transformed her type of thinking process when it comes to criminalizing drugs. End It For Good Christina Dent pt 2 We are well aware that drug addictions are, basically, a pandemic in our society today. It is not only a problem in major metropolitan cities, but it literally crosses all social and economic boundary's. I know. I was addicted to pain killers a few back after almost 7 years of use. My father had a drug problem. One of my brothers as well. As a police officer, I also arrested my share of people that was found to be in possession of drugs. Drugs of various kinds. I also have seen that a policy of “lock them up” does not mean they are able to get “cleaned up.” Many times, these things are still available IN the prison system. Many times, these people get released and go right back to what they've always known. The same neighborhoods and friends and environment. There has been rehabilitation offered, or at least no rehabilitation that really made a difference. My guest today in Christina Dent, the founder and president of “End It For Good,” a 501-c-3 non-profit formed in 2019. Christina Dent is a politically conservative Christian, who supported criminalizing drugs, until she became a foster parent and saw up close the negative effects the current system was perpetuating on those who needed the most help. She researched why drug-related harm was not decreasing and she became convinced it was because the criminal justice system is simply the wrong tool to be used for addressing the drug problem Christiana, you also referenced what the nation of Portugal did in their “war on drugs.” But they went about winning their war in a very different way than we have in the United States – and achieved a very different outcome. Tell us about that… I can hear the voices now, “if we legalize drugs then everyone will be a drug addict.” But you believe it will be different. What would we need to put in place IF this nation took the approach the Portugal did with their drug epidemic? I guess, Christiana, I was aware of what these drugs were doing to me. Gaining weight. Lethargic. Exhausted all of the time. That was motivation for me to stop. But that was me. What do most people need to happen, in their life, for them to stop? The idea was, if we criminalize drugs, that will make people stop. Why doesn't that work? How does your organization try to bridge this gap? Now, I also had my faith to back up my decision to stop. I prayed and stood on scripture and all of that. All night long - until I was finally so exhausted I might be able to fall asleep – even if it was only for a few minutes. But what about those who do not have their faith to rely on? What can we, as a society to differently than “lock them up” in order to build stronger families, safer communities and thriving citizens? Christina, this is so interesting. You and your organization are doing a marvelous work. I learned a lot from preparing for this interview as well as right now, just talking with you. I also believe our listeners have learned a lot as well and may now have new perspective of things. If someone wanted to get in touch with you or your organization, maybe to check out your services, ask you to come speak or maybe just to do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? Folks, the war on drugs was a good idea, just implemented in the wrong way. As Christina Dent has shared with us, we have fostered an environment that simply intensifies the dependency; intensifies the addictions and intensifies the mindset that it all must remain hidden. We, as a nation and as communities, MUST change our mindset in order to effectively change the mindset of those who are truly being harmed. Those using the drugs themselves. I'm in agreement with Christina, we need to relook at how we, as a nation, are trying to deal with this drug problem. We need to offer hope, not condemnation. I don't know what the answer is. But, as Christina has so eloquently pointed...

She researched why drug-related harm was not decreasing and she became convinced it was because the criminal justice system is simply the wrong tool to be used for addressing the drug problem. In 2017, she began hosting book discussions in her home state of Mississippi, using Johann Hari's book “Chasing The Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs.” Those discussions grew into events with hundreds of people attending, which led to “End It For Good” being formed, which is now an education and advocacy organization that provides citizens with opportunities to learn about the root causes of drug harms like crime, addiction, and overdose deaths, and consider alternatives to the punitive approach we've used for decades. Christina is a writer, TEDx speaker, and perpetual question asker. She grew up in a conservative, Christian home and earned a degree in Biblical Studies with an emphasis in Christian Ministry from Belhaven University. Help me welcome to the program, Christina Dent. Christina, thank you for taking the time to come on our program today. I do appreciate it. First question. Other than that brief information I just provided, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Christina Dent?” Let's back up. Prior to 2014, you had a certain view of how the world worked and some preconceived ideas of what was needed to fix the drug problem in America. Can you share that Christina Dent back then, what she saw and how she viewed the role of the criminal justice system at that time? And then, in 2014, what happened to begin to change your perspective on things?" Your TEDx talk was awesome. I'll be putting a link to it down below in the show notes so our listeners can access it. You hit on some very dramatic points. I loved how you did the comparison of the war on drugs with prohibition in this nation back in the early 1900's. Can you briefly go over that for our listeners? You discussed how people, for lack of a better term, smuggle alcohol into sporting events. I never thought of that in the terms you shared in your TEDx talk. Can you share how that analogy also relates to the drug problem we are seeing on our streets today? You also referenced what the nation of Portugal did in their “war on drugs.” But they went about winning their war in a very different way than we have in the United States – and achieved a very different outcome. Tell us about that Folks, the war on drugs was a good idea, just implemented in the wrong way. As Christina Dent has shared with us, we have fostered an environment that simply intensifies the dependency; intensifies the addictions and intensifies the mindset that it all must remain hidden. Go down into the
In 1982, the phrase "Just Say No" to drugs first emerged when Nancy Reagan was visiting Longfellow Elementary School in Oakland, California. However, is that still the answer? My guest today Christina Dent has a different message. Christina is the founder & president of "End It For Good", a nonprofit doing education and advocacy towards a health-centered approach to drugs and addiction. After several years working for a technology start-up, and a few more years at home raising her sons, Christina started to "End It For Good" after her experience as a foster mom convinced her that the criminal justice system was the wrong tool to use for drugs and addiction. What had previously been a category of people in her mind, people addicted to drugs, now had a name, face, and an infant son that was sleeping in the extra bedroom down the hall. Her foster care experience gave her an up-close look at the realities of addiction, drug use, and the far-reaching impact of our drug laws. This became the catalyst for months of reading, questions, and listening as she tried to reconcile her beliefs as a Christian with the pain and suffering she was seeing first-hand. What she learned changed her mind. The laws she thought were the answer to keep people from using drugs she now saw as causing more harm than help to people made in God's image. Christina founded End It For Good out of her desire to invite others to listen to the voices directly impacted by our drug laws. Her hope is that more people will explore the root causes of drug-related harm and consider a different approach. She is currently writing a book on the research and experiences that changed her mind about the best path forward to help people thrive, even in a world where harmful drugs exist. Christina is married to her college sweetheart, Thomas, and they live in Ridgeland, MS with their three sons. On the weekends you can find her biking, in a hammock reading a biography, or playing board games with the family.
Trump supporters say he has one "issue" wrong. But it's a biggie! Christina Dent with End It For Good is in studio to discuss the costs associated with the current drug war in Mississippi and how the approach should be changed.

Last week, Texas passed a law effectively banning abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy, and the Supreme Court did not immediately strike it down. Both pro-life and pro-choice advocates have erupted in response. But what does the law really mean? Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn get into the weeds and explain why the Texas law isn't the victory many assume. Then, Christina Dent shares about her unexpected journey from a conservative, Southern, Bible school graduate, to drug legalization advocate. She tells Skye about the unexpected casualties caused by America's war on drugs, and what a more Christian response to the crisis could look like. Plus, China bans kids from playing video games. Christina lives in Mississippi and changed her own mind about how to best handle drugs after she became a foster parent. She started End It For Good several years ago to invite others to learn and consider changing their minds too so we can save lives, preserve families, and strengthen communities. Today, Christina shares how she survived a literal train wreck, the loving mom who challenged her views of drug addiction, and starting End It For Good to educate others on the issue. Christina's story reminds us that the grace of God heals our deepest needs. Listen to Christina's story now! Stories Christina shared: Leading End it For Good Growing up in a Christian home in Mississippi Giving her life to Christ at a Christian camp at 9 Family devotions and how that influenced her Experiencing a train wreck in Chicago Her parent's cancer diagnosis How the suffering shaped her Meeting a mother and child through foster care The problems with our cultural narrative about drugs Why it's easier to “otherize” people Researching to find a better way to handle drugs The three ways that prohibition of drugs harms people Understanding the reasons why people use drugs What your church can do to help Great quotes from Christina: I want my life to matter. If it's short or if it's long, I want to be faithful. Her struggle with addiction is not a lack of love for her son. This is not a criminal issue. What a tragedy it would be to take this son from a mother who dearly loves him. We're using trauma to fix a problem made worse fundamentally by trauma. The criminal justice system is not the right tool for a complex medical crisis like drug addiction.
