Alex Epstein is a philosopher who argues that “human flourishing” should be the guiding principle of industrial and environmental progress. He founded Center for Industrial Progress (CIP) in 2011 to offer a positive, pro-human alternative to the Green movement.Epstein is the author of The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels (Penguin, 2014), a New York Times bestseller arguing that if we look at the whole picture, human flourishing requires that humanity use more fossil fuels not less. (WSJ review here.) The book has been widely praised as the most persuasive argument ever made for our continuing use of fossil fuels, winning Epstein the “Most Original Thinker of 2014” award from The McLaughlin Group.Alex has some hot takes on the issues of climate change and science but why are they so controversial. If we are to completely step away from fossil fuels how much energy output would we use? Are we still evolving? If we are evolving what factors do you look at in people to determine if we are still evolving? What historical trends are likely to continue? Why can single-celled organisms evolve so much quicker or mutate at least? Is a mutation an evolution?Scott Solomon is a biologist, professor, and science communicator. He teaches ecology, evolutionary biology, and scientific communication as an Associate Teaching Professor at Rice University in Houston. He has a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior from the University of Texas at Austin where his research examined the evolutionary basis of biological diversity in the Amazon Basin. He has taught field biology at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado and developed a complete digital lecture series on the modern science of evolution with The Great Courses. Before coming to Rice, he worked as a visiting researcher with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and São Paulo State University in Rio Claro, Brazil. His current research examines the interactions between native and non-native ants, the impacts of extreme flooding on ant communities, ant foraging behavior, and the co-evolution between ants and microbes. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Tropical Ecology. Dr. Solomon often speaks and writes about science at schools, museums, churches, science cafés, TEDx events, and other venues and has appeared on radio broadcasts on NPR and the BBC World Service and television series such as NASA's Unexplained Files and Life 2.0. His writing and photography have appeared in publications such as NBC News, Slate, Aeon, Nautilus, and Wired and his first book, Future Humans: Inside the Science of Our Continuing Evolution was published by Yale University Press and was included on the 2017 Best Book List by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).Of course, our conversation was heavily oriented around COVID-19. Most of my listeners are from the West and most of my listeners never had a chance to go to the front lines. Most of them never got the chance to see the destruction, the devastation or even the day to day of peoples and animals from around the world. We rely on the news, we rely on journalists but sometimes those reports come with bias and agendas.Today I'm joined by someone who is not just living on the front lines but studying large carnivores at the Ngorongoro Crater, the the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. There's been talks of plastic straws killing sea turtles and that if we ban them we can save the turtle. It's also been forecasted that we are in our planets 6th mass extinction phases. I talk with Arjun of the effects of climate change and the human footprint on the environment he works and the world as a whole.Arjun Dheer is a National Geographic Early Career grantee with a keen interest in the ecology, evolution, and conservation of large carnivores. He has worked in several field sites and countries in sub-Saharan Africa since 2013, with a particular focus on using behavioral and evolutionary ecology to promote conservation outcomes. Arjun joined the Ngorongoro Hyena Project of the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin, Germany, as a PhD student in 2017. His project focuses on the mitigation of human-carnivore conflict in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania. He bridges behavioral ecology with applied conservation biology by directly monitoring spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) clans and collaborating closely with the local Maasai community using a variety of field and laboratory techniques. His major aim is to understand the scope and drivers of conflict between the Maasai and large carnivores in the area and to relay rigorous, evidence-based scientific findings back to the local authorities, community members, and academic circles alike.Connect with ArjunTwitterInstagramFacebookThe Hyena ProjectNat GeoSupport us on PatreonWe offer tons (yes tons!) of extra content for as little as $2 - including an extra ad-free podcast each month. Today on the show, again, we're going to be tackling the idea of censorship. The people who think things shouldn't be seen or things shouldn't be expressed, or the idea that certain things when they're portrayed are going to project bad ideas is a big responsibility in our society. And in this democracy, in the republic, in the free state that we get to live in, it's very unique privilege to be able to decide what can be said, what can be seen. Today's guest is Kirra Cheers. Kirra is a photographer/director whose work explores themes of connection and sexuality within an urban dating culture. Originally from Australia, Kirra now lives and works in New York City. She is currently living in New York City. She's a photo based journalist who looked at questions and looks at dating in an urban environment. For today's show, Kirra and I are topless during this podcast and we're going to be pushing the bounds and the limits of Google, Facebook, Instagram and the ways they limit and censor what and how things can be seen and perceived. If you're in New York City, please go check out her show at the box August 24th. It is a Free The Nipple Party. Inclusivity is defined as an intention or policy of including people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized. Now. Where you may stand on this word, its definition and how it's perceived today. Some people believe this is the most inclusive time. And some people believe this is the most exclusive time. So today I'm bringing on an expert and someone who I believe not just talks great to inclusive communities, but also exclusive communities without making anybody feel marginalized. I present to you Tayo Rockson. Tayo is a keynote speaker and author in New York City. He specializes in working with companies and corporations, helping to bring them into a digital age. Titles become a good friend of mine, not just a buddy I podcast with here and there. And we had an incredible conversation, conversations about inclusivity versus exclusivity. Are we living in the most inclusive time? And what is America's stance and what is the betrayal and message we are trying to portray and convey to the rest of world, being the leaders in how we want this world to move in a moral and positive direction? And of course, Tayo and I got into, you know, a little bit of Twitter talk, Lionel Messi verse, Christiano Ronaldo, who's the better player? Who has a better legacy? Please enjoy the show.Guest Links:Tayo's InstagramTayo's WebsiteTayo's TwitterTayo's LinkedInTayo's YoutubeTayo's FacebookSupport us on PatreonWe offer tons (yes tons!) of extra content for as little as $2 - including an extra ad-free podcast each month.
