In this episode, we had the pleasure to sit down with Rob Garza from the trailblazing electronic duo Thievery Corporation. Rob shares how he has built an extraordinary enduring career in the music industry, from Thievery Corporation to his own solo project Garza and now the creation of a soon-to-be-released musical documentary telling the story of musicians from war-torn Yemen. Formed in Washington D.C., almost 30 years ago, by Rob and partner Eric Hilton, Thievery Corporation carved its own lane in electronic music by creating a genre-blending sonic gateway unifying diverse cultures. We begin the interview with a brief analysis and breakdown of Thievery Corporation's popular track Lebanese Blonde to better understand the sound design and musical styling that went into creating their biggest hits. Garza takes us back to the very beginning of his musical journey and what led to his passion for electronic music and producing at an early age. He shares the evolution in technology he experienced firsthand that has shifted from the way electronic music was created over twenty years ago to what it is today. Deepening his international reach, Garza touches on his courageous efforts to amplify the story of the Yemeni people through their rich musical heritage. Garza shares the story of his journey through Yemen and the recordings he has created with select Yemeni musicians to help tell their story through his efforts with the United Nations World Food Project and how that opportunity has opened his eyes to the privilege of making music without social or political limitations. Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza is my guest on Our Social Landscape, where we discuss cultural expression through music.
Sitting down with multi-faceted artist ToBy (aka Reggie B) to talk about new projects and how he handles rapping, singing, acting, comedy, and more. He's signed to Magnetic Moon, the label owned by Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza, which should tell you something about his level of creativity and willingness to color outside the lines. We loved ToBy's laidback approach. He's sort of taking cues from the rapper-actors before him (Childish Gambino, Will Smith), but there's also a lot of flow to his flow. Check it out and then find ToBy's music here: https://linktr.ee/tobyseason Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
GARZA produces an overall experience that isn’t simply a music performance. The multi-media sensory exploration is the brainchild of Rob Garza, one half of electronic duo Thievery Corporation, who wanted to experiment with a collaborative approach but expand it more broadly across musical genres and artistic expression. It’s an all-encompassing design, utilizing visual artists, producers, […]

In this cycle of picks we're focusing on ‘Soul' as a genre and I'm kind of breaking that with this pick. But then again, maybe not so much? There were a number of albums I considered that are definitely soul and interesting, including the amazing Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1, by Jill Scott, Call Me by Al Green, Voodoo by D'Angelo, and Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite by Maxwell, but I didn't feel like listening to many slow songs this month, which most of them feature, and I know Jill Scott's work very well. So, while auditing other options, I settled on a band that's intrigued me for some time, has lots of soul within, and will hopefully fit the bill: The Mirror Conspiracy by Thievery Corporation is our pick for February 2022. Essentially a two person ‘band', Eric Hilton and Rob Garza wrote, produced, and recorded this on their own, with guest Pam Bricker featured on a few tracks. There's a swath of sounds, instruments, and styles throughout, and it's quite unlike anything else I've ever heard. Released in 2000, there are surprises around most corners, and it's been categorized as being Lounge, Triphop, and Chillout. There's Soul in those right? Enjoy the listens ahead!

Bus Driver ExperienceRob Garza Ep. 18“We've never been concerned with fitting into the ‘music industry.' We started making music in the liquor room of DC's Eighteenth Street Lounge with random bits of music gear among boxes of spirits. Approaching our music as a production duo has allowed us to never feel limited to one particular sound and traverse many fascinating musical landscapes.”- Rob GarzaAfter a long hiatus, I am excited to bring the Bus Driver Experience back to the podcast airwaves with a legend of the music industry, Rob Garza. Rob is one half of, Thievery Corporation, an American electronic music duo. Their musical style mixes elements of dub, acid jazz, reggae, Indian classical, Middle Eastern music, hip hop, electronica, and Brazilian music, including bossa nova. They decided to see what would come of mixing all these in a recording studio, and from this, in 1996 the duo started their Eighteenth Street Lounge Music record label.Rob has been DJ'ing and exploring more his love of electronic music embracing more nu-disco, boogie and deep house. Influenced by his involvement with La Santanera and Canibal Royal in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. His sets and remixes reflect another side not typically associated with the Thievery sound. His new project, Garza, is a deep reimagining of a process that features a collective of artists, musicians, producers, visual artists, and videographers. With multidimensional music and convergence of genres; it blends, merges and melds together into one singular experience. They are currently touring through the US and Canada, check for tour dates here.Connect with RobInstagramFacebookGet Your Bus Merch HereSupport us on PatreonWe offer tons (yes tons!) of extra content for as little as $2 - including an extra ad-free podcast each month. Episode 011 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes JEFF FRANCA, drummer of Thievery Corporation and founder of Congo Sanchez and Natural Selectah, to the show for an informative and emotional powwow. Jeff is a rising star in the Denver music scene, and traces his musical and personal roots back to the District of Columbia. We took a solid ninety minutes to chop it up about a number of salient topics that ran the gamut and it was a thoroughly enjoyable conversation that I think will resonate with the Upful LIFE listeners. We begin by discussing the Washington D.C. music scene and the successful, trendsetting new venue there The Anthem, spiralling out into a few directions from there. His earliest memories of Pink Floyd hitting his ears, and the music that first reached him deep inside. Topics covered include his roots as a thorough study of iconic jazz drummers from the late 50's through the early 70's, such as Billy Higgins, Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobham, and Max Roach. He touches on themes and concepts native to each of their styles, and how those cats changed, and basically shaped, the game for decades to come. We also touch on his time at the University of Indiana as a double major, whether or not he wanted to try out for The Disco Biscuits, and his thoughts on jazz jamming verses jamband jamming. Jeff then takes a deep dive on a topic that will resonate with anybody who listens in, the relationship he had with his late brother Nicholas, who died in 2011, after a lengthy illness. Jeff details how his music career intersected with the last months of his brother's life, the cosmic Virgo/Sagittarius connections within it all, how his brother empowered him to forge onward as a musician and an artist. He recalls in emotional detail spending days at Sloan Kettering in NYC with Nicholas and then chasing John Zorn, Adam Deitch, hanging at The Stone, and the experiencing the downtown scene after dark. It was during this time that the seeds were being sewn for Jeff to begin playing with Thievery Corporation. Jeff's late brother Nicholas Franca Jeff brings us all the way back to Eighteenth Street Lounge music in D.C. and how stints producing records with Funk Ark and touring with See-I laid the foundation for his role as Thievery Corporation's touring drummer. Franca explains the roots of Thievery in D.C. culture, and around the world, and how that heritage has taken shape over two decades. Jeff continues by meticulously breaking down his role playing live drums in an electronic music outfit, and it's fascinating to hear him unspool it all, the nuts and bolts of how Rob Garza, Eric Hilton and company have evolved their live sets into a true live band performance, without sacrificing any of the thump. We get a thorough introduction to Congo Sanchez, Jeff's fantastic side-project that mixes it up in mysterious styles of world electro and future dancehall. He recalls some humorous road stories and a comical debut at Electric Forest 2012, before opening up a bit about the cultural and thematic concepts inherent in the Congo Sanchez trio. All that plus his presence on Eddie Roberts' Color Red label in Denver, and why the music scene there is different then anywhere else in the States today. Having a partner as a tour manager, why the grind of touring is an authentic and essential element to making honest art. And a tribute to true East Coast OG, the late great Ryan Dewitt. Thievery Corporation on the road in 2015 We follow that up with another interview from the Emerald Cup cannabis event in Northern California, in early December. This time we chat it up with Moe Angelo and Pat Anglin of the immersive art installation Because of the Lotus, which is a festival favorite and a beloved part of the fabric of Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, which coincidentally just announced another fantastic event Suwannee Rising, April 4-6. The *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* is a classic golden-era hip-hop jam from twenty-three years ago: Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers: Crooklyn Dodgers 95 featuring Chubb Rock, Masta Ace, and Jeru the Damaja, with DJ Premier production. Los Angeles-native singer/songwriter, Charlotte Bash, began performing at a young age and has sung at numerous venues internationally with the likes of John Mellencamp, Sara Bareilles, Aaron Carter, Marietta Simpson, Sylvia McNair, and Shahkar Bineshpajooh at The Microsoft Theatre at LA Live. She was classically trained as an opera singer at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, but when she returned to L.A. she wanted to find her own sound that combined her classical training with the pop music she loved. The sound she found is a unique musical experience that combines fantasy and reality, as demonstrated in her 2013 release of her coming of age EP, Journey to Me. Her newest project, “Princess Game” was inspired by the electro indie pop scene coming out of Britain and Australia and is a theatrical journey through sonic landscapes that tell a powerful story. Thievery Corporation - Barrio Alto DJ Edit By Petko Turner Thievery Corporation has taken progressive political stances on various issues, opposing war and what they regard as exploitative trade agreements, while supporting human rights and food programs. In September 2005, the group participated in the Operation Ceasefire concert, with the objective of ending the Iraq War. From their press release regarding their album Radio Retaliation, Garza said: Radio Retaliation is definitely a more overt political statement [...] There's no excuse for not speaking out at this point, with the suspension of habeas corpus, outsourced torture, illegal wars of aggression, fuel, food, and economic crises. It's hard to close your eyes and sleep while the world is burning around you. If you are an artist, this is the most essential time to speak up. — Rob Garza Thievery Corporation are vocal advocates for the World Food Programme, seeing hunger as "...something basic, really elemental, that transcends boundaries around the world Thievery Corporation is a Washington, D.C.-based recording artist and DJ collective consisting of Rob Garza, Eric Hilton, and their supporting artists Rob Myers, Loulou Ghelichkhani, Natalia Clavier, Frank 'Booty Lock' Mitchell, Mr. Lif, Jeff Franca and Ashish Vyas. Born and bred Londoner Ed Worboys aka Esotera picked up his first vinyl in the early 2000s and soon became hooked to the underground sounds of jungle, drum n bass, hardcore and acid house. Fast forward to 2015 and his sound is firmly in the house and techno camp, blending the deep with the slamming, the euphoric with the dark. As the grand prize winner in a recent Beatport Remix contest, Esotera will soon be released on Rob Garza’s (Thievery Corporation) new label Magnetic Moon Records. The tumbling deep house remix beat hundreds of entries and received critical acclaim from a panel of judges at a live event in San Francisco. Esotera hosts a weekly radio show every Tuesday on In House Radio (www.ihrlive.com & 87.7FM) from 9-11pm, featuring the best new house and techno and special guest appearances.

This week's RIPEcast features a tag set from Pink Mammoth residents Jonathan Will and Gravity, live from Breakfast of Champions 2014. Here's what they have to say: "We are both super excited to have closed out our 4th Breakfast of Champions together. Rob Garza had just hoped of the decks, taking us an eclectic journey. We aimed to keep the feeling going strong with bits of funk, glazed with some grit; ending on a high, sedimental note. We hope you enjoy the mix and look forward to what 2014 will bring!" - Jonathan Will & Gravity (pinkmammoth.org) About Jonathan Will: Jonathan Will is a resident DJ, podcast boss, and impresario for San Francisco’s legendary house crew Pink Mammoth, as well as an up-and-coming producer for Loöq Records. He loves to make people FEAL on the dance floors by taking them through a journey inward of beauty and emotion, as well as provoking momentous booty-shaking extroversion. His style is eclectic, expressive and dance floor-centric. His sets convey a full range of house music including full-body notes of tech, deep house; seductive aromas of electro-pop, underground jazz and intrigue; and including a well balanced, lingering finish of funk and lure. He has played alongside the likes of Lee Burridge, BLOND:ISH, Jimpster, Art Department, Soul Clap, Justin Martin, DJ T, Worthy, Marques Wyatt, Fred Everything, Spirit Catcher, Audiofly (Luca Saporito), M.A.N.D.Y. (Philip Jung) Miguel Migs and The Martinez Brothers. He has performed at almost every notable club, festival and underground in the SF- Bay area including: Monarch, Mighty, The ENDUP, Supperclub, Triple Crown, Ruby Sky, Wish, Temple, Anu, Public Works, The Phoenix Hotel, Monroe, How Weird, Lovefest, Superhero St Fair, Decompression, Body & Soul, Robot Heart; and around the world in Miami (WMC), Minneapolis, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, Amsterdam, Japan and Mexico, as well as the much loved, annual Pink Mammoth parties at BRC, Burning Man. Currently, he has been busy in the studios with production. In 2012 he did a remix for AND()'s “Akuma H23” on Looq records. The release was well received and even peaked to #35 in its category on Beatport. Then he followed with a strong, lush summer deep house remix of Momu's “ComingUp” which got re-released on Loöq's Best 12 of 2012. He latest remix of Momu’s “Rising” which debued on Pink Mammoth's Sunrise set on Robot Heart is already getting much DJ support and praise. http://soundcloud.com/jonathan-w http://facebook.com/Jonathan.Will.dj About Gravity: The Chicago area music scene provided the perfect backdrop for the early days of Rob Adelmann’s (aka DJ Gravity) funky, eclectic influences. Yet despite growing up in the birthplace of house music, Rob’s first real exposure to the genre came in 1997, while living in London. The thriving underground scene of UK’s capital sucked him in and left a lasting impression. In 1999, while living in Colorado, Rob bought turntables and began teaching himself the art of mixing, recalling advice he picked up from friends in London. Within 6 months he found himself playing bars and clubs in Colorado. While living in Boulder, Rob had the good fortune of meeting future Pink Mammoth cofounder Ryel K, who invited him to camp and DJ at Pink Mammoth during Burning Man 2005. The Burning Man culture and his experience DJing there had such a profound effect that he was inspired to move to San Francisco shortly after. Once in SF, Rob quickly became an integral part of Pink Mammoth’s foundation. Over the last six years Rob has DJed every Pink Mammoth event in venues all over SF, as well as parties throughout North America, including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Denver and Calgary. In addition to playing headlining sets, Rob has had the opportunity to share the decks with Lee Burridge, Marques Wyatt, Collette, Jimpster, Spirit Catcher, Justin Martin, Random Soul, Hed Kandi, Miguel Migs, AstroGlyde, DJ T and The Martinez Brothers. Although rooted in funky and deep house, Rob’s sound is not easily defined. Whether playing an uplifting daytime party, epic sunset/sunrise set, or a peak time nightclub slot, his main source of inspiration comes from the dancefloor. Rather than sticking to a plan or sub-genre of house, Rob’s sets are based on reading the crowd and creating an irresistible vibe and unforgettable experience. http://www.pinkmammoth.org/participants/gravity/#sthash.QxSRQjM4.dpuf
It was another magical Breakfast of Champions, our 14th, and seemingly everything, even variables out of our control like the weather, went our way. We had another smiling, happy, fun-loving crowd. There was a stellar DJ line-up which included the likes of Thievery Corporations's Rob Garza, Dirtybird's Worthy, David Harness and all of your favorite Space Cowboys of course. The sun was shining and drinks were flowing. What more could we ask for? We spent a little more time and care on programming B.O.C. than in years past. We were shooting for more diversity in the musical offering and to that end I played house instead of the usual breaks. I played earlier in the day (10 AM) than the past two years so I started things off with a nice groove at a lower tempo and gradually built the energy as the set went along. If you were there, I hope you enjoyed it. If you're just now listening for the first time, I hope you like! Big thanks to Space Cowboys Managing Partner, Andrea Lundquist, to Josh, Tamo, Kirk, Mighty and to everyone else who made Breakfast of Champions an enormous success again this year. And one last thanks to MC Matt Haze for getting the crowd hyped during my set! Woot woot! Photo courtesy of Josh Williams (aka 8ball) For more information on Zach, visit www.djzachmoore.com
