“I was at the lowest point, I didn't know what I wanted. I didn't even know if I wanted to be alive at the time.” Michael Carter-Williams Former NBA star  In this powerful episode of The Pivot Podcast, former NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams sits down with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder to share the untold story of his journey through the highs and lows of professional basketball, the quiet moments that almost broke him and uncovering resilience. From instant stardom to injury setbacks and battling to stay in the league, Micheal opens up on how he found the mental toughness needed to keep pushing when the world counted him out and shares how he found peace and joy again. From rock bottom back up to the fullest he's been in his life, Michael talks about the pressure of early success, the lessons learned from adversity, and how fatherhood and personal growth reshaped his mindset both on and off the court. This conversation is raw and honest about identity, perseverance, and finding purpose beyond the sport. He reflects on growing up in a wealthy town but not having wealth, navigating the feeling of being an outsider in both predominantly white and Black spaces, and how basketball became his outlet.   Michael takes the guys through the surreal moment of winning Rookie of the Year with the 76ers, only to be traded the next season. He opens up about being coached by his childhood idol Jason Kidd, their fallout, the challenges of bouncing between five teams in five years, and the mental toll of trying to live up to high expectations.   At one of the lowest moments in his life, Michael reveals how he lost both his NBA job and his fiancé in the same week, sending him into deep depression and self-doubt. He admits there was a time he didn't even know if he wanted to be alive. But through therapy, self-reflection, and rediscovering his purpose, he found his way back, eventually re-earning the trust of his now-wife and securing a two-year deal with the Orlando Magic.   Transitioning into the next phase of his life, Michael talks about his role as an ESPN analyst, the importance of teaching athletes about business, and why mental health is still taboo in NBA locker rooms. He hopes to change that narrative by starting real conversations something he wishes had been available to him earlier in his career.   This episode of the Pivot is about survival, self-worth, and embracing the journey, no matter how unpredictable it gets. Michael Carter-Williams' story proves that success isn't defined by awards or contracts, but by the ability to fight through adversity, rebuild, and come back stronger than before. As the NBA playoffs tip off this week, 16 teams find themselves dreaming of hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy in June. The Orlando Magic, however, are not one of those teams ... again. A short-lived franchise filled with longing for the days of Shaq and Penny, Dwight and Turkoglu, the Magic actually haven't won a playoff series since 2010.  But for the first time in a long time, there's hope in Orlando. This week's guest is a veteran leader on that team: point guard Michael Carter-Williams. On today's show, MCW discusses the following with fellow Syracuse alum Ariel Helwani: His battles with injuries and if he considered hanging it up after missing all of the 2021-22 season  What it's like being the oldest member of the youthful Magic His MMA fandom and why he likes to train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu Battles with mental health issues and how he's overcome them What it was like to hire -- and later fire -- his mother as his manager Getting drafted in the same class as and playing with perennial MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo And much more! Michael Carter-Williams was the No. 11 overall draft pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. A former standout at Syracuse, MCW has played for six teams: the Magic, Houston Rockets, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers, and Milwaukee Bucks. Learn more about your ad choices. Seeing a lot of the Magic fan base down at the moment. Orlando can't seem to string a win streak together and we haven't made up ground in the play-in chase. We've lost ground after a disappointing home loss to the Bucks who were without Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday. Jonathan Isaac had another lower body surgical procedure and is out for the rest of the season, and Isaac may never wear a Magic jersey again. It's a possibility. This team is in the play-in hunt. We are. And we're not dead until it's mathematically over. And even if the Magic miss out on the play-in, we're still going to have respectable odds of our draft pick jumping into the top 4. It's a win-win situation either way. Watch guys like Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner grow in these added pressure games. Evaluate the roster and Jamahl Mosley's coaching staff, and we'll have a better idea of needs come the offseason. Those are things that tanking won't accomplish. Also, Michael Carter-Williams is back. #LetsGoMagic Warning: Adult Language

Weekend Gwiazd NBA zakończony, wracamy więc do ligowego grania. Zanim to jednak nastąpi, podsumowujemy wydarzenia związane z tegorocznym All-Star Game i sprawdzamy, jak nam poszło typowanie zwycięzców konkursów. Wybieramy też nasz ulubiony Mecz Gwiazd w historii. Przy okazji zastanawiamy się, czy pewne rozwiązane z przeszłości z bejsbolowej MLB dałoby się przenieść do NBA. Głównym tematem tego odcinka naszego podcastu jest jednak wielopozycyjność. Współczesna koszykówka powoli zapomina o klasycznym zestawie pięciu pozycji, a coraz większe znaczenie mają gracze wszechstronni i systemy gry premiujące takowych. Augustin, Michael Carter-Williams i Enes Kanter Freedom. Nie zabraknie też pytań od słuchaczy!
