Danny Massa is a 32-year-old man who was born and raised in the Bronx. Like so many of us, as an insecure adolescent, Danny was picked on for his weight. And so at the age of 12, he turned to boxing, martial arts, and physical fitness to build his confidence. Shortly after, Danny began competing in boxing matches and mixed martial arts competitions and holds a record of 10 wins and 4 losses. His father, Captain Daniel J. Massa, served New York City as a Firefighter for 25 years and was part of the rescue and recovery effort at the World Trade Center in 2001. His father's words, “Always try to leave everywhere you've been a little nicer than the way you found it” , inspired Danny to follow in his footsteps and become a New York Firefighter. Danny is also a member of the FDNY Boxing Bravest (with a 4-0 record) and the FDNY Grappling Team, where he trains and prepares future firefighters. Whether he's battling in the ring, grappling in the cage, carrying patients down countless flights of stairs during emergency medical calls or extinguishing blazing infernos, one truth remains-breath matters. In short, if you can breathe, everything is okay. If you can't, then nothing else matters. This principle has captivated Danny so much that it inspired him to become a Certified Breath Coach under the tutelage of Dr. Belisa Vranich, a world renowned clinical psychologist who has coached everyone from Special Ops Military to professional athletes. Danny, is a certified Wim Hof instructor and Group Fitness Instructor. He is also passionate about the benefits of cold exposure. Like his father, Danny believes in the power of service and leaving this world just a little bit nicer than how he found it. In today's episode, Danny and I discuss all things related to cold plunge and breath work. Danny explains that cold plunge is a therapeutic method of activating the stress response and finding comfort in discomfort. He discusses the health benefits of cold plunging, including reducing inflammatory proteins and increasing motivating hormones like dopamine. Tune in now to learn more! In this Podcast Episode, Dr. Belisa Vranich, Mark Bell, Nsima Inyang, and Andrew Zaragoza talk about the importance of horizontal "belly breathing". Most of us have been conditioned to breath vertically up and down into the top of our lungs instead of into our diaphragm which can cause many health issues such as knee and back pain, pelvic floor issues, stress and anxiety and more. How Breath Is the Missing Piece of the Health Puzzle It sounds strange to think that something we've been doing literally all our lives, we could be doing the wrong way – breathing. As babies, we start out breathing the right way, but the psychological component of breathing changes this over time, as health seekers Adiel Gorel and Chad Lefevre discuss. Tune in to learn how to breathe right for long-term good health. Key Insights: Adiel and Chad speak about the work of psychologist Belisa Vranich who trains people in the correct way to breathe. They also discuss Dr. Carl Stough, Moshe Feldenkrais, etc. We start life breathing naturally and correctly as babies. However, there are psychological reasons why we tend to tense up and start to breathe in incorrect and suboptimal ways. We are meant to be expanding the belly while breathing, while a lot of us end up doing the opposite. Ideally, we should try to exhale much more fully, the inhale will follow. The 4-7-8 breathing technique is known as the “relaxing breath.” It can be used before an exam, or before delivering a speech, or before bed to relax the mind and body. Research shows that singers, especially trained opera singers, live longer because of the exhalation technique they use. Breathing right can also help manage chronic conditions. Author, Investment Expert and Wellness Advocate Adiel Gorel isn't just an expert in his chosen fields but also a storyteller who makes complex issues easily accessible. How to Oxygenate, Recharge And Refuel the Body & Brain – Part 2 Can you simply breathe your way to good physical and mental health? Yes, says Dr. Belisa Vranich, psychologist, author and founder of thebreathingclass.com. She speaks to Adiel Gorel about the importance of breathing right and explains how to do this and how it impacts our wellness. Key Insights: Dr. Belisa Vranich is a mental and physical fitness expert who is a regular guest on various national TV shows, has featured in top journals, and has worked with military vets. She has taught her breathing technique to people who have then described it as life-changing. Breathing using the right muscles helps with healing, heartburn, recovering from trauma, and more. Dr. Vranich explains how modern life has made us forget how to breathe and how we should actually be paying as much attention to pulmonary health as we do to cardiac health. We should be belly breathing, using our core muscles, and expanding our diaphragm, she explains. We should be exhaling completely, which has a positive impact on health. Dr. Vranich explains why singers tend to live longer, because of how they extend the exhale. Breathing techniques help with COPD, blood pressure, etc. Author, Investment Expert and Wellness Advocate Adiel Gorel isn't just an expert in his chosen fields but also a storyteller who makes complex issues easily accessible. Paul Check | All is God Power Quotes From The Show The Root of All Disease "All diseases are really rooted in one core issue which is an energetic, metabolic concern. It's the ability of the cell to derive energy from sugar and oxygen. This is either efficient or not efficient; when it's not efficient there is a lot of pollution that starts to accumulate within the body and inflames it. All forms of stress are basically going to relate to some sort of inflammation. There is a fingerprint of every type of stress and how it inflames the body and those are a set of cytokines. A sunburn will have a different of cytokines than COVID-19 or a parasite infection in your gut." - Dr. John Lieurance The Business Side of Sickare "Emergency medicine is a whole different deal; if I get a heart attack, I want to to go the hospital. However, if I have a chronic disease, I'm certainly not signing up to go on XYZ ten, twelve different medications for the rest of my life because it's not treating the problem. If you do that, you're basically just keeping the body in a chronic state of disease which brings us to look at the business side of sickcare. If companies are driven to come up with solutions for you that keep you in a chronic state of disease, they're not motivated to find solutions that will cure it because then they would lose the patient. There are dozens of great solutions that are being shelved because then they wouldn't make more money off of people. It's a crime." - Dr. John Lieurance Activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System "Your autonomic nervous system consists of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. We certainly don't need more of the sympathetic nervous system - this is your fight or flight zone and we've got enough stress already. What we really want and what we really need is more of our parasympathetic nervous system. This is the resting and digesting area but it is also the part of the nervous system that lights up when we feel more grounded and connected to Source. It helps you feel good and relaxed and experience bliss. We want to support that and when you use the ZEN nasal spray, it's a powerful activator to the vagus nerve which is the primary nerve that carries the parasympathetic nervous system. Like breathwork, it's a window to actually having some control over the autonomics." - Dr. John Lieurance Links From Today's Show MitoZen Melatonin: Miracle Molecule by Dr. John Lieurance Advanced Rejuvenation Ultimate Cellular Reset Joseph Campbell Dr. Daniel Pompa ZEN Nasal Spray Life is NOT a Journey - Alan Watts Dr. Michael Ryce The Warburg Effect: How Does it Benefit Cancer Cells? How these groups with dogmatic, controlling leaders begin to grow an infection of resentment within and it begins to unravel the brotherhood. The fact that the old school patriarchy was infected and has operated from that space for a millennia but we're now witnessing this positive shift away from that mentality. Why it's foolish to think that evil does not exist because in the world there are fear and love, chaos and order, dark and night...there are always opposing forces because all is God. It's so hard because we are fighting biology. Steven Pressfield calls it 'the resistance.' So, what is resistance's number one job? What is a holodyne's number one job? What is a core belief that got installed almost like a microchip in a computer; what is its core job? Its core job is to function without change. So, when I am presented with new information that goes against the construct of the programs that were installed in my mind that activate the holodynes and the beliefs and the way of being, there is going to be a system error, right? That is when your soul has to come in, see things from an observer perspective, and override the programming." - Josh Trent The Tipping Point We Face Every Day "We all have a tipping point that comes when we have experienced a way of being that is creating pain. We change through pleasure and pain; it's an axis and the reason that dark comes really strong right before light is because every day we're in a tipping point. Every single day you and I as men can choose to show up as authoritative playful leaders based on our environment and what we're aware of happening in it. How can you do this? First you have to choose that you want to be aware of what is actually going on in reality; not the subjective reality but the objective reality that you can see from 30,000 feet. After that, ask yourself, 'What is my decision making faculty about how I'm going to adapt and serve in that awareness?' " - Josh Trent What It Means To Be An Authoritative Playful Man "Authoritative Playfulness is what men need to cultivate because if we can be authoritative and playful, that can be trusted. Authoritative means you take care of your body, you take care of your mental health; maybe you learn how to use firearms properly to protect you and your family, maybe you learn how to grow food. Maybe you learn all kinds of skills that can protect from a place of peace and love against evil because evil is real just like love is real. Evil is real because we are still at the consciousness level where we are still carrying out the wishes of evil and those come from greed, resentment, and betrayal which are all ego wounding.... ...They are still these deep, bloody ego wounds that we are uncovering from thousands of years of people being mistreated and honestly trying to be led from dogmatism. So, we get to be authoritative and we get to be playful because we have to have fun and we have to be loving. In this episode, I have a conversation with my friend, breath teacher, and clinical psychologist Dr. Belisa Vranich. We discuss her path to discovering the power of the breath, some of the cues you might be breathing wrong, and how you can effectively re-train your breath to work for you, not against you. We get into how breath can help us let go, stay present, and feel our emotions in a cathartic and healing way. Learning proper breath is SUCH an act of self love and self care - truly, if you're wondering what you're really craving, it seriously may be found in how you are breathing. This is a MUST listen for just about everyone. A clinical psychologist and a leading expert in mental health and fitness, Dr. Belisa Vranich is the author of Breathe: The Simple, Revolutionary 14-Day Program to Improve Your Mental and Physical Health (St. Martin's Press/Hay House). She is the founder of www.thebreathingclass.com. Dr. Belisa has extensive experience working with first responders: firefighters, military and law enforcement for topics related to endurance, stress reduction, precision, pain reduction, and PTSD. You can find Dr. Belisa on Instagram, find lots of resources including the Caesar Milan video mentioned in this podcast on her website at www.thebreathingclass.com, and get your breathing IQ score at thebreathingiq.com. I'm also obsessed with knowing all about you, so please follow (and DM!) me on Instagram, Facebook and my website. We're in this together and the journey is going to be so awesome. Bre calls Alan out for not getting enough sleep and that is probably part of the reason Alan is sick. Alan and Bre talk about some of the features of the Whoop strap and Heart Rate Variability. They talk about David Goggins and his book “Can't Hurt Me” and Jesse Itzler's book, “Living with a Seal”. Consistency is key! Bre leads us through an awesome breathing exercise connecting us to the rest of the world. And Alan is excited to be able to breathe out both nostrils for the first time in a couple of days. Bre asks Alan about how he adjusts his fitness routine when he is sick. Right now he is focused on recovery and getting over the crud he has because he is going to Arizona to visit his mother who was in the hospital for three weeks with COVID. She is now home and doing much better. Shout out to Sheryl Titone, a strong 70 year old woman. Alan is also going to AZ for a jiu jitsu camp with the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Globetrotters. Alan is focused on recovery because the Whoop strap is in his head and he is trying to listen to his body telling him to reduce stress. Bre mentions that 80% of doctor visits are stress related. If you want to get better at something you practice and train in that thing, the same is true for sleep. This then turns into a conversation about lack of sleep when bowhunting and bowhunting performance. This leads Bre to talk about why she made the switch to intermittent fasting to help with her endurance performance. Recovery and sleep is important, but how can you train yourself to be a badass, how do you become an outlier? Need to work smart and hard. The best way to get in shape for ice climbing is by ice climbing. Best elk shape is by elk hunting. The conversation continues talking about utilizing fat as fuel, aka keto. Alan shares a story about his friend Ganesh who is keto and his performance hiking Longs Peak. There is a lot of mental training that goes into both training and proper nutrition. Alan and Bre talk about mental training and fight or flight. 60-90 seconds is an automatic response by the sympathetic nervous system, then you have to start making conscious decisions. Alan talks about fight or flight in jiu jitsu, you must have a technical use of training to be able to fight appropriately. Shout out to Professor Howie. Bre shares about mental toughness & managing physiology in trail running. Being able to tap into the mind comes with tapping into the breath first. Bre mentions a technique to help with anxiety attacks to slow down your heart rate. Bre talks about how more people, like Wim Hof, are using ancient knowledge to get more people involved. Find the tools and adjunct therapies you need, know the purpose of these tools and when to use them. Use them to create the life you want. The secret is DO THE WORK. Once you start seeing the benefits you can't quit. You must be into the journey and the process as much as you are into the result. Alan and Bre talk about the importance of balance in all things. They cover strength, flexibility, mobility; hot yoga; physical therapy. Shout out to Nicole Fox, DPT. EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED! Journal prompt: Write about your thoughts from the episode. Remember, the focus should be on direction instead of a specific plan. Forward is progress, plans change, what you want changes.
