BEST OF 166: Pt. 3 More Juicy Goodness | Darby Slaton

Yep, Darby and I just kept talking and decided to hit record! All truth is God's truth! Even non-believers can use spiritual principles. We, as maturing Sons of God, need to be operating at a higher level of understanding, power, and authority to bring more heaven to earth!HIGHLIGHTS:1. Spiritual laws work—whether you know Jesus yet or not. Just because someone isn't in a church pew doesn't mean they're not getting results. Why? Because they're tapping into spiritual principles that God wired into the universe. All truth is God's truth—even if people stumble into it without knowing the Source. It's not New Age magic; it's divine design. Now, if they are accessing this power outside of Christ, there will be a price to pay. Jesus already paid the price for us as believers to access this spiritual power.2. The enemy doesn't create—he imitates.Satan has zero original ideas. He can only copy God's systems and twist them. That means when people use spiritual tools the wrong way, it's not because the tools are bad—it's because they're being hijacked. The original blueprint? Still God's.3. We're wired to desire—but only God fulfills.Desire isn't sinful. It's sacred. We were designed with desire on purpose—by God. The problem is when we try to satisfy that desire outside of Him. So what are addictions? Misguided attempts to fill a divine ache that only Jesus can satisfy.4. You're not just a spectator—you're a co-creator.We're not meant to just pray “Your will be done” and sit around waiting. We were created to go into heaven, see what God wants, and bring it here. That's not some woo-woo theology—it's kingdom responsibility. You've got authority, and you're built to orchestrate things from the spiritual realm.5. Comfort is the enemy of calling. When everything shakes (and it will), what's really being tested is where your security lies. Are you clinging to the conveniences of the world, or are you anchored in the unshakeable kingdom? The illusion of safety keeps people stuck—but you? You were made for more than microwave faith and spiritual autopilot.6. Don't Be Impressed by the Supernatural if Your Life's a Mess. You can have visions, dreams, or talk about angels all day, but if your life looks like chaos, something's off. The fruit matters. Real encounters with God should produce real transformation. Don't settle for hype—go after what actually works.7. Truth Isn't Just a Concept—It's a Person.Darby drops a truth bomb here: transformation happens in layers, but the ultimate goal isn't just knowledge—it's relationship. Jesus is the capital T Truth, and the more you engage with Him, the freer and more aligned your life becomes.8. Ask God for Real—He'll Show Up.Forget arguing theology. If someone's skeptical, just dare them to ask God to reveal Himself. He's not hiding. Darby even “double dog dares” people to pray a one-liner—and guess what? People encounter God. Because He's real, and He loves the invitation.9. We've Got Something Better Than New Age: A Personal God.You can experiment with breathwork or study the laws of attraction, but the difference for believers is relationship. The Kingdom life isn't just metaphysical principles—it's grace, truth, and a God who walks with you. And that changes everything.10. Mind Renewal Is About Releasing, Not Striving. You're not trying to become something new—you're uncovering who you already are in Christ. Religion piles stuff on. Kingdom peels it off so your true identity can shine. You're not fighting for victory—you're living from it.LINK for DARBY:- Connect with Darby: https://www.darbyslaton.com/LINKS for BRALYNN:- Get Bralynn's Book! Acting Business Boot Camp
Episode 268: Illusions and Empowering Questions

Acting Business Boot Camp

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2024 15:41

On-Camera Class Costar Class I'm going to talk about illusion and illusion in your acting career in two different ways. The first way is I'm going to talk about how we have the idea that an acting career will go one way, but actually, that's just an illusion, and that's just me trying to control the outcome.  So when I'm doing that, it is an illusion.  And I remember this actually in terms of money. I always thought if I made X amount of money a year, I would be free. Oh, I'm going to be so happy. Oh, my life will be cupcakes and bubblegum. I will have no worries. Only to find out when I made that amount of money and much more. You don't get cupcakes and bubblegum. You get more decisions, and it becomes even more stressful.  And really, the only thing money buys is convenience. And if you're not making much money right now, that might be difficult to hear.  But money does not buy happiness. That was an illusion that I had.  Another thing that I find as a coach in the industry, and to be quite frank, even more so as a casting director, is this illusion idea that actors have about what it takes to be an actor and what it takes to be a working actor.  And it's difficult to explain, but I want you to think of something you have done in your life that was difficult. Okay, you're going to do this with me right now. Think of something in your life that you did that was difficult.  And then I want you to imagine someone who has never done that before coming up to you and either telling you how that experience would be for them or how they would go about doing it. And you, having known how difficult that was and how that actually gets done, is listening, quite frankly, to this bunch of bullshit.  And that's sometimes what makes it difficult to be a coach, a casting director, and meeting new actors, and having to break it to them and explain it's not that way. What is incredibly joyful for me, though, is the actor who goes, “Tell me more.” “Tell me more because I want to make that illusion a reality. I want to make that illusion a reality more than anything else in the world. Say jump, and I'll ask you how high.”  That's exciting. That lights me up. So that is the first way I'm talking to you about illusion. “We do not see the world as it is. We see it as we are.”  This goes into that example I just gave you previously about the actor and the coach or the casting director. I want to remind you of the definition of consciousness.  Now, the definition of consciousness is your awareness of who you are, as opposed to the you that you believe you are or are taught that you are. So, I think of it as my consciousness is how the Universe sees me.  Because the Universe sees me as it sees itself, which is Infinite.  I, on my own, in my ego world, is finite. So I can choose to believe the me that I believe I am or was taught that I am, or I can believe the consciousness and have an awareness of who I truly am so that I see the world more clearly with more reality.  Now let's also talk about, because I think this has really come up for me a lot in the past couple of weeks, how this core work helps you to be a better actor. If I can see things and understand things more truthfully, with more reality, oh boy, that will help me when I start working on character.  Because I'm tapping into Infinite Truth, Infinite reality, as opposed to my own finite truth, my own finite reality.  Because when you're Infinite, people are attracted to that. Quantum physics proves that the world is a creation of our perceptions.  So I want my perception to be as much in line with the awareness of who I truly am, as opposed to the awareness of who I think I am or how I was taught that I was.  I want to see the world Infinitely.  And I want my perception to be Infinite. We simply attract and then see what it is we expect to see and can actually create what we expect to happen. So that can work for us, or that can work against us. So, I want you to take a moment now just to write down this question:  How do I see the world, and do I see the world in a way that works for me or against me?  And then I want you to journal about that.  We create our world. Through the interpretations we make.  So, if we want to create a more enjoyable life experience, we can focus on finding peace, joy, and abundance. And that focus produces a more desirable perception of the world and those in it.  So now we're talking, this second part, we're talking about how to create a world that is happier for us, that is more desirable for us, that makes us feel good.  Dr. Wayne Dyer has this great quote, and I say this as an affirmation quite a bit: “I want to feel good. I want to feel good. I want to feel good.”  Dr. Wayne Dyer also has another quote that I love, which is all about illusion: “Change the way you look at things. And the things you look at change.” And that is, again, why I want my perceptions to be as aligned with my consciousness of the awareness of who I really am. Meaning in line with the Universe. In line with Infinite thought. Remember, like energy attracts like energy.  So the more positiveness I create in my life, the more positive energy I self-generate, the more I'm going to see that in my perception, in my beautifully created illusions.  Our goal is to see the world through the inner eyes of Universal Truth and inspire others to do the same. Remember, capital T truth is Universal Truth.  It's plants, it's nature, it's in alignment with that Truth, it's the wind.  And little t truth is ego's truth. An acronym for ego is easing God out.  And remember, I consider this to be the God of your understanding. God can also, a wonderful acronym for God is good orderly direction. Oh, wouldn't I love some more of that in my life, wisdom and some good, orderly direction.  And again, I remind you of the definition of consciousness, which is the awareness of who you really are, as opposed to the you that you believe you are or were taught that you are. So that capital T Truth is who you really are. And that little t truth is who you think you are.  So there I've given you two ideas on illusion.  Illusion in your career and illusion in your life. And how you create a more beautiful in both.

What is truth? Our world is overrun with subjective truth, postmodernism, and emotionalism, where everyone's “truth” is equally valid and there's no such thing as objective truth. But this is a lie. As Refining Rhetoric is all about seeking the capital-T Truth in every arena of life, throughout the course of 2023 Robert asked his guests to weigh in with their definitions of truth. In this wrap-up episode for the year, Robert replays and reacts to the best responses from his guests to the question, “What is truth?” As you hear from guests like Dale Partridge, David Goodwin, Joyce Burges, Israel Wayne, and more, you'll discover that truth is a person, why you can't build a society on lies, that the church is the pillar of truth, why you can't believe in your own subjective truth and still believe in Jesus, why you shouldn't send your children to schools that don't believe in objective truth, why truth is anything that fits into God's narrative, why real truth never changes, why our relationship with Christ ought to motivate our obedience to Him, off of what standard we should base our understanding of truth, and much more. Did Ancient Cultures Believe in a “Third Gender”?

The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 13, 2023 4:57

An argument cited often by propagators of transgender ideology is that ancient cultures across the world recognized so-called “third genders,” those who did not fit neatly in categories of male or female. If they recognized this, the argument goes, then so should we.   The latest video in the What Would You Say? series engages this claim carefully, refuting it with three simple points. It begins by explaining the roots of the argument:  "According to advocates of transgender ideology, because so many ancient cultures recognized 'third' genders, we should reject the 'gender binary,' the idea that only two genders exist, and we should reject the notion that gender is essentially linked to one's biological sex. …   Among the most cited examples of 'third genders' are the Native American 'Two-spirit,' Thailand's 'Kathoey' (a word regularly translated as 'Ladyboy'), the 'Sal-zikrum' of Ancient Middle East, the 'Fa'afafine' of Samoa, the 'Hijra' of India, and the 'Muxe' of Southern Mexico."  If a handful of people throughout all human history and culture are proof that biological sex is fake, what do we make of the fact that the rest of the world throughout all human history and culture knew that biological sex was real? To suggest these cultures' understanding of “gender” bore any resemblance to today's transgenderism is to impose our culture's categories on theirs. I believe the term for this is “cultural appropriation.”  "The label 'third gender' is an anachronism forced upon people who actually presumed the reality of biological sex, gender roles, and the so-called 'gender binary.' For example, the word 'Fa'afafine,' used in Samoan culture, means 'in the manner of women.' In Samoan culture, a Fa'afafine was chosen by his family at a young age to help his mother with household tasks, often because the family had no daughters. This boy was not considered a wife or mother but was assigned responsibilities often performed by women."  In other words, the Samoans and similar cultures have never claimed that young boys who might perform stereotypically “female” duties at home are actually female.   But even if that were their claim, it leaves open the central question Matt Walsh dedicated an entire documentary to asking: What is a woman? That unanswered question is at the heart of a modern contradiction.    "Like these so-called 'third genders,' modern transgender ideology also relies on the 'gender binary' that it claims to reject."  "At its root, the modern concept that someone can be 'transgender' or “born into the wrong body,” depends heavily on rigid male and female stereotypes. If a little girl likes trucks or short hair or dislikes dresses, she must be a boy. If a boy likes pink or dressing up or playing house, he is really a girl. In other words, transgender ideology contradicts itself, promoting the very male and female stereotypes it claims to overcome."  Incoherence aside, capital-T Truth exists, regardless of which people-groups throughout history believed in it. So, even if ancient cultures did believe modern ideas about women, gender, or sex, that does not make their ideas any more true or any less absurd.  "Ancient cultures didn't always get it right. While some ancient cultures allowed or even expected some men to act like women, and vice-versa, many others didn't. To assume that only those cultures got it right is to make what is known as the 'noble savage' mistake. Imagine someone suggesting that because some cultures allowed slavery or cannibalism, we should too. That would be outrageous!"  A Christian worldview is big enough to handle the biological realities of male and female, while also allowing for and celebrating the beautiful variety of individual men and women.  "While the roles of males and females look different from one culture to the next, the biological reality that humans are male and female does not. That's been obvious in every culture until ours, and Genesis tells us why:  Because 'God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him. Male and female He created them.'" Christian Charachter - Love

Wilderness Wanderings

Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God. (1 Corinthians 8:1-3)   If we are to be the sorts of people that can engage our changing world with the wisdom and grace of God, we need to be the sorts of people formed into the likeness of God, namely that of Christ Jesus.  This is the “growth to maturity” as Christians that Paul talks about elsewhere.  It is the formation of Christian character. In 1 Corinthians 8, Paul shows us how this works with the character trait of love.  “Knowledge puffs up while love builds up,” he says. Now, among the clear stances of scripture is the well-deliberated and discerned opinion of the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15 that Gentile believers were to, “abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.” Paul, upon receiving a question from the Corinthians about food sacrificed to idols then, could have simply reiterated this position of the council, stated “it's clear,” and told the Corinthians to obey or else.  But he doesn't.  It is not the principles of knowledge and obedience that are to be the primary drivers of action in the Corinthian community, but love. Paul offers a case study.  He begins by stating, in effect, that the decision of the Jerusalem Council was wrong when it comes to the capital “T” “Truth” about God.  “We know,” he says, that an idol is nothing and that there is no God but one.  So: “we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.”  But, he continues, “if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol's temple… this brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.”  This, he says, is a sin against Christ.  Now Paul is back in alignment with the Council, and the reason is that Love demands something different than Truth here.  And the demand of love is what wins.  Knowledge on its own—even the knowledge of the deepest and truest articles of orthodox Christian belief—leads to pride and the tearing down and “destruction” of many things, including the faith of “weaker brothers and sisters” (vv. 9-11).  Knowledge on its own is an “immature” knowledge.  A knowledge that does not yet know as it ought. Love, however, takes a different path and starts in a different place.  Love begins with relationship—a love of God.  One can know all sorts of things about God without really loving God or having a relationship with him, which is why knowledge is not sufficient.    When someone loves God, it is evidence to them that they are known by God.  Their love for God only comes because they have received his prior love for them in Christ.  There is a natural humility that arises from this awareness.  I only love because God first loved me, a sinner.  I am only saved because God has saved me.  All Christians stand on this same foundation: not that we know God or have somehow learned enough about him, grabbed hold of him, or acted well enough in response to him, but rather that God has known, loved, and grabbed hold of us—sinners though we (still) are. The primary driver of action in the maturing community of Christ then, is a love modeled on God's own.  We are to lovingly honour the sister and brother for whom Christ died not just as a fellow image-bearer worthy of dignity, but as a family member intimately known and loved by the same God who loves us.  To do this is to know God (1 John 4:7-21) in the intimate relationship sort of knowing the Hebrew scriptures speak of.  This is a mature knowing—a knowing as we ought. Truth can only be spoken in a love like this, and indeed as this case in Corinthians shows—sometimes Love determines that some greater Truths of God's Sovereignty are left unsaid and unshown for the sake of building another up in faith and not tearing them down.  This quite clearly takes much maturity to apply well. So, try it out.  Practice Christ's love today.  How might you lovingly build one another up in Christian faith, rather than tear down?

Today is an introduction to a 4-part deep dive (well, 5 if you count this intro). It's a workshop-in-a-podcast learning series on the the four elements of air, fire, earth, water, what we can learn from them about creating new systems and structures around education. The goal of digging into the elements here is to view ourselves and our work in education as part of a LIVING SYSTEM. Not part of an industry or a factory, which is no secret that's how we operate! We know this. We see it. We dwell on the problems! What we're talking about here is a way of connecting to paradigms outside of industrial, extractive, colonial, capitalistic paradigms to see if there's something here we can learn about setting up these new systems. We deal with education here in this Regenerative Ed Podcast, but, I often get folks saying, hey, this applies to the food system or the healthcare system or the personal systems I use in my household. Yes, yes! Definitely it does. We are in an age where it's clear as day that the old systems aren't working and we're looking at what to do differently. I'm suggesting here that there are an infinite amount of things we can look to for inspiration, which is what we do on this podcast. In this series, we are focusing on the four elements. We'll talk about science, we'll talk about symbols, we'll talk about cultural phrases, we may even dip into the cosmos.  NOTE: I am not an expert in the elements! I am a human being with a history of experiences, many of which involve the educational system and textile systems, and I simply can observe patterns and connect them to ways to be in these new systems that has proved helpful for people. There's no capital T Truth here! Take what works and leave the rest. Add to it and create your own. Next week, we'll start with the air element! I'll see you next week to chat more about movement, currents, music, libras, and what it all has to do with education. In John 4, we see Jesus approach a woman who many in the orthodox Jewish community would have avoided. There were all sorts of barriers that would have prevented an Orthodox Jewish people from conversing with her: barriers around gender, race, religion and morality. Jesus' interaction with this woman shows not only an incredible posture of grace and kindness, but also an invitation to capital T-Truth, where Jesus invites her to drink of “living water” found in…Him. And as the story shows, this duality of both 1. the correct Christlike posture, coupled with 2. the bold proclamation that Jesus is Truth was utterly transformative for this woman. And it's a model of interaction that we modern Christians can emulate, too.

Hello to you listening in Thornleigh, Australia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories from Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more because it's worth it) for Motivate Your Monday with your host, Diane Wyzga  The following is excerpted from This Is Water By Jenna Krajeski, published September 19, 2008. “In 2005, David Foster Wallace addressed the graduating class at Kenyon College with a speech that is now one of his most read pieces. Click HERE in the Episode Notes to access the speech. In it, he argues, gorgeously, against “unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.” He begins with a parable:There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How's the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”All of this is, no doubt, just the tip of the iceberg, peeking out of the sea. At Kenyon, Wallace elaborated on his water parable:The point of the fish story is merely that the most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about....The fact is that in the day to day trenches of adult existence, banal platitudes can have a life or death importance. And, nearing the end of his speech:The capital-T Truth is about life BEFORE death. It is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over:This is water. This is water.”Question: How's the water you're swimming in?  You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Should a biopic stick to the capital-T Truth, or is a biopic about a con artist justified in fabricating the details? How well do we feel Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio play off of one another? Is this one of Spielberg's classic bigger-than-reality stories, or does it stand out as a strange entry for this storied director? Catch the episode if you can for answers to these questions and more!

In this episode Alan and Danny answer a variety of questions sent in from listeners. Questions: [1:10] Gabriel - Is there any benefit to including SFAs and cholesterol in low quantities in our diets for healthspan? [10:42] Luis Arrondo - Can I do 3 rather than 4 meals or more for protein absorption by increasing grams of protein? How many grams of protein can be absorbed at one sitting. Does taking in protein at night help more absorption of protein? If so, something slower, like milk over whey? Last, how much protein per kilo of weight to gain muscle via weightlifing? [19:34] Heather Smith - Please could you go into the sodium needs of those with hypotension. Your podcast about normotension and hypertension was excellent, as was the section relating to athletes. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the sodium needs of a hypotensive person. Thank you! [27:00] Judith Williams - I would find it really helpful if you could summarise what the evidence shows are the key dietary changes for long term weight loss. [36:41] Dale Grant - Great podcast and episode as normal especially the quack asylum (big fan of this segment). Having listened to a few of these extreme people (quacks) on various platforms, I've noticed they also employ an aggressive falsify my opponents position tactic. Its almost as if they are aware of Karl Poppers falsification principle, but have misinterpreted it as falsify my "opponents" position instead of my own. Aside from the fact they falsely view the person they are having a debate with as their “opponent”, they miss the point that they should be trying to find evidence to falsify their own position, and thus get closer to a capital T Truth. On the other hand as Alan pointed out with Assem Mahlhotra, this may just be a reluctance to acknowledge evidence for other reasons (narcissism, us vs Them narrative, etc). Nowhere was this more apparent than when James Wilks (host of mass propaganda film game changers), sought to aggressively debate Chris Kresser on the Joe Rogan Podcast. Considering Wilks is a former cage fighter this wasn't surprising. Unfortunately, this aggressive tactic does lead some people to conclude that Wilks has “won” the argument, because he has “won” the debate. Similar to most modern debates, it seems like you don't have to win the debate intellectually with reason. Instead you just have to make it seem as if your more competent than your opponent. Do you agree these extreme people employ this tactic? and how do you think we could improve “scientific” debates (note inverted commas) in the public domain in the future? [46:40] Dimitri - Should fruit consumption be moderated because of the sugar content? For example, a fig has 8g of sugar, can I eat 5-10 in one sitting or would that be detrimental to health? [51:26] Rebecca Toutant - What is the evidence / practice behind integrative and functional nutrition? [56:06] Duncan Clarke - This will be a strange question for you but I'll send it anyway. How could a cyclist specifically lose upper body muscle mass? For example a fit healthy athlete from another sport takes up cycling and they now have more arm/shoulder muscle than needed. The goal being to maximize the power to weight ratio for climbing. [60:15] Gabriel - Do you foresee any public health issues related to the increasing popularity of plant based diets, where less careful individuals may face issues consuming certain nutrients harder to get from a plant based diet, such as preformed Vitamin A, choline, iron, protein etc? [72:03] Ward Stanford - After re-listening to your podcast on weight maintenance over time I was wondering what information exists on the idea of establishing new body fat set points. It seems like merely existing at a lower bf% for a period of time may not be enough, but what are your thoughts on one's ability to truly create a lower set point where it becomes easier to maintain a lower body fat, and how long would you need to be at that lower bf% for it to become a "set point" Thank you!

They get right into Bre's run “training” overview before transitioning into Alan's Jiu Jitsu routine. This past weekend in Jiu Jitsu he got a bad neck injury, so he had to readjust by watching, “taking notes” & focus on his self care routine. Bre's jealous of Alan's sauna, what a treat. Brief rundown of the benefits of a sauna in terms of healing. Talking about necks leads them into headstands & both of their philosophies around teaching or not teaching certain poses in yoga. They both feel strongly about the way they transition students between external and neutral poses in the hips. The main point of all this yoga pose talk is the importance of people learning about & understanding their own body & what is best for you. Awareness, get in tune with your body. Alan leads us in breath & frog pose- woohoo! Bre briefly shares her recent learnings from an Ayurveda module in her 800 hour therapy program. Shout out to Amrit Institute for Bre's training. Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga. Alan shares a funny story about his first experience learning about Ayurveda in his yoga training- the teacher shared that she gave herself a sesame oil massage in sheets [no spoiler alert here.] There's a little discussion of the elements that each of us are made of- air, ether, fire, water, earth- and the imbalances that can happen causing dis-ease, illness, symptoms. So much ancient medicine is disregarded as hocus pocus, but it's been around much longer than western medicine, so there must be something to it. Both agree a balance of ancient, traditional, eastern medicine & western medicine is the way. This is why Alan tries to make Yoga accessible because you lose people with the “hippie” & he tries to show people that it exists, experience leads to questions. Bre talks about she's gone off the deep end, not holding back the dharma yogi talks & has been surprised by the response. Yoga teachers who do not bring philosophy into the practice are doing it a disservice, it is more than a fitness workout. Alan emphasizes whatever gets people in the door is most important. They both try to bring the human-ness to yoga & vice versa. The conversation evolves into polarities, duality, conflict, the culture of us & them that exists right now creating so much separation & hatred. Politics sneak their way in because of the idea of divisiveness & separation. Also the pandemic has been surprising because there is not a clear line of who falls on which side, however there is still this us & them, for or anti mentality. Little vax talk. All of our decisions come from personal experience. Overall there needs to be less shaming & judging. Alan reiterates that bias will always exist, so let's talk about it & more importantly LISTEN! It feels like it's diverging from yoga but that is the yoga, coming back to oneness, union, impersonal polarities is nature. The mind brings us out of the moment, yoga brings you back to breath & sensation which is the only moment we experience, the present moment. This gives us freedom. Alan talks about big T Truth & little t truth. They break down are humans inherently good or inherently evil/ bad?! How you see the world is will be true to you, you have the power of choice. Journal prompt: What is your big T Truth? Are they actually small t truths? Think of a person who in the past you disagreed with, can you write about a way that you do connect with them. Triggers that came up & what was the sensation with it, without the story. There are always going to be a million choices you can make about how to spend your time. How can we decide how we want to feel about the choices we make, and how does this affect the outcomes?Episode Highlights00:30    We often overestimate what we can accomplish in one day but underestimate what we can accomplish in a year.01:15    Raise your hand if you spend a lot of time looking at your list not being able to decide which one task will bring you closer to your goals.01:21    If you do know what's most important to you, the most important question you can ask is, “will this task bring me closer to achieving that goal?”03:00    Once you answer the question, “Is this important,” if the answer is yes, you have to just move forward and do it.03:20    Having a master list of things to do doesn't actually motivate me to do them. Just picking one and doing it is way easier than looking at my big list.04:30    Having too many things to do and choose from makes it very hard to commit to just one and take action.05:10    What's stopping me from taking action on my list? Why am I living in the land of confusion?05:50    Humans run out of energy and attention to make decisions incredibly fast each day. The scientific term is “decision fatigue” and it's real.06:10    The best thing you can do to help your brain out and fight decision fatigue is to start removing decisions from your life that don't matter very much.06:27    Once you get used to doing something frequently enough, it becomes a routine and now it's not a decision anymore, it's just what you do.08:00    Things that objectively don't take any more effort than other actions, such as chopping vegetables instead of fruits for breakfast, can be perceived by your brain as harder because you aren't used to doing them, and so you procrastinate or avoid doing them.08:20    If something is new and not part of your routine, it takes energy, thought, and time. So we can try and reserve that energy for new things that make a difference toward your goals and not create drama everywhere with minor decisions like what to make for breakfast.09:00    Try to take as many decisions off the table as you can before the day begins.10:30    We get to choose our thoughts, which means we get to choose if we are going to enjoy an experience or resist it and make it agonizing.11:04    It's easier to mirror someone who is already good at acting, thinking, and feeling like you want to act, think and feel than to conjure it up all by yourself. Find a mentor!12:00    Thoughts are thoughts, they aren't the capital T Truth – but they sure can make us feel crazy when we believe everything we think, especially if it's not something we like!13:05    Woah, woah, woah, brain – this didn't happen TO me, it's just happening.14:30    What thought could you choose that lets you feel empowered, in control of the situation, and happier? Are you going through any trials right now? Where are you most tempted in life? Living in a broken, sin-filled world, guarantees that you will face trials and temptations. David Marvin teaches through James 1:1-18, showing us how we can walk through the trials and temptations of life in this world.KEY TAKEAWAYS-Scripture doesn't teach “if” we will face trials, but rather “when” we will face trials. They are guaranteed on this earth.-When you embrace trials as a Christian, God uses them to grow and strengthen your faith.-Don't make the mistake of walking away from God when trials come.-The Christian life is a process of sanctification, which simply means to become more like Jesus.-God doesn't create the pain and problems of this world—they are because of us and sin—but He does use them for our ultimate good when we trust and follow Him.-You've never had a conversation with someone about needing to be less peaceful or calm. Our default setting is the opposite: anxiety, worry, fear, etc.-If we don't flee from temptations, they will eventually hook us and turn into sin, which leads to death.-Here is an acronym to fight temptations: TRUTH: T (Triggers), R (Root beliefs), U (Ungodly behavior), T (Truth from God's Word), H (Helpful future response)-Everything good comes from God. Everything.-At your core, what do you truly believe about God? Not what you know to be true about Him, but what do you really and truly believe to be true about Him?MENTIONED OR RECOMMENDED RESOURCES-Suggested Scripture Study: James 1:1-18

I’m interested in the Areopagus and in Paul’s clever imitation of Socrates in his argument. I like that he approached the Athenians rhetorically through an alley door they’d left ajar in their religious system, using their altar to an unknown god to lure them into the big T Truth. But honestly, right about now, I have a lot less need for what’s clever in my life than I do for what is real. And I think this story is about returning us and returning our religion to what is real. We have a way of wandering away from the real, both as a species and as individuals.

Dan is joined by philosopher John Haught (Georgetown University), who argues that many people think we should look to the past, the deep past, for ultimate answers. This includes certain scientists who want to look to the Big Bang for ultimate explanations, or religious teachers focusing on God’s perfect design in the Garden of Eden, before everything got messed up. Others might tend to look to the so-called Eternal Present for God, or for ultimate meaning and answers. Through prayer, we may feel like we can tap directly into a timeless God, letting go of our worldly concerns, and, of course, there is some truth to this. Many philosophers have also preached something similar, that true contemplation of the One, or of capital “T” Truth, can take us out of our mortal, perishing bodies into the realm of the sublime. But Haught wants to point our attention to a third option: the future. What if the truest meaning of the grand story that we are living in right now, which includes a big bang, billions of years of lifeless space, followed by the forming of carbon, then of unicellular life, and biological progression all the way to sentient and self-conscious beings like humans -- what if the meaning of THAT story is not clear to us yet because that story is not over yet? Perhaps we do have some guideposts given to us by God along the way, but rather than looking back, we should be looking AHEAD. What gets in the way of understanding each other? When we often talk about strategies and ideas it quickly devolves into a debate about "right and wrong" rather than a sharing of ideas. This is true whether it's about politics or where to go for dinner. In this podcast I talk about the importance of identifying what is an absolute (capital T) Truth and what is a personal (lowercase "t") truth. The better we are at owning what is our own personal truth (Peppermint ice cream is my favorite) rather than trying to make them absolute Truths (Peppermint ice cream is the only kind of ice cream worth eating), the easier it is to both share our perspective and influence others. This episode discusses vulnerability, clarity and owning your own truth, which can lead to better communication and greater collaboration.

Unlike many observant Jews, however, he understands multiple pathways to access the capital T Truth, and he explores what it would mean for Israelis to take responsibility for the conflict in the region while holding both sides accountable.

Can you imagine a story that’s big enough to encompass seemingly rival narratives? Can you imagine a peace in the Holy Land that doesn’t require anyone to compromise?   Meet Rabbi Yehuda HaKohen of the Brit Hazon movement and Vision Magazine . He is an alternative peace activist and outspoken opponent of the two-state solution. Yehuda lives in an “outpost” in the West Bank, but doesn’t identify as a "settler." He works with Jewish and Palestinian radicals on the front lines of the conflict and believes that the "extremists" are better suited to make a lasting peace in the land than the "Westernized officials signing American papers."   While deeply committed to Jewish history and practice, Yehuda believes that being more inclusive brings him closer to a "capital T" Truth, and he’s committed to peace work with his Palestinian neighbors. He wants to both deepen and soften Israel's Jewish character while creating a model society that offers all of its citizens equal rights. This conversation is a post-colonial, post-Zionist approach to the conflict in the Middle East, and it requires an overall shift in our intellectual paradigm. “We need to think differently, reject the limitations, and reimagine one another.” Listen here to learn more.   Listeners can find Yehuda's writings at Vision Magazine and his podcast, The Next Stage, on Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and Tune-in.

WOMEN SIPPING ON LIFE (with doctor shannon) | Stop Drowning | Start Sipping | Daily Inspiration | Hope | Certainty | Abundanc

I’m incredibly inspired today by a couple of our listeners...you know who you are! (Thank you!) I happened to be on my iTunes account for the podcast, and I noticed a lot of wonderful ratings and a new review that said the following: "DietFanatic — So happy to find Dr. Shannon’s S.O.L. podcast. My first experience with Podcasts, and this is a great one. I look forward to listening, and going back and listening to previous episodes.” My immediate response was this… "Thanks, Love!" And I smiled from the inside out and back again. To YOU, dear soul who wrote that, "Thanks, Love!" To all of you who allow me to speak into your heart and soul I say, "Thanks, Love!" And to all of YOU who have ever left a rating and/or review…"Thanks, Love!!" I say that even to the few one star reviews that I’ve received, including the "not so nice" review.  So, why am I sharing this today? Well, first of all, not everyone is going to LOVE you, or LIKE you or what you have to say. Not everyone is going to be kind, supportive, and encouraging. In fact, sometimes people are going to be down right mean and nasty. Why? I don’t know why they are, except life has shown me that when people are hurting, they do and say things that hurt others. Also, a lot of times they’re not doing IT to YOU. Whatever "IT" is. Let me explain. When someone does something that hurts us, we think that they need to apologize to us before we can release the pain and suffering. When the truth is, waiting to release your pain and suffering until someone realizes that they hurt you and apologizes for it not only causes a lot of unnecessary suffering, but a dependency that’ll rob you of your freedom. The first thing we must do is to forgive them (even though they may be totally unaware and unintentional in their actions.) Then we must forgive ourselves for holding onto anything, or anyone, that’s causing unnecessary suffering. When we do this, we release ourselves to freely love and live our lives. This brings me to a very sweet email that I received this morning. A big shoutout to C.C. for reaching out and sharing. She asked me to share my thoughts about her current situation, so this is what I’m going to say... Bless yourself by believing their actions, and your TRUTH, and moving ahead in truth. Say, "Thanks, Love!," and keep moving. A grateful heart is a heart and soul filled with GREAT. G - Gratitude. R - Recognition. E - Engagement. A - Acceptance. T - Truth. Give it to yourself, and receive it, my dear. You’re NOT alone, you’re not guilty, and guess what? Your SACRED is on the other side of your SCARED. I sure hope this helps you today! Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage yourself.)  TODAY’S SACRED S.O.L. STEP IS THIS:  Please give yourself a big hug right now. I mean it, right now. Recognize and receive it. Remember who you are and what you desire. Then give thanks and move ahead. I had notes prepared, but I’m foregoing them to share an insight I *just* had. What is Driven2Drink?  In particular, what does Driven2Drink, the podcast, communicate, particularly when it’s Jen and me?  Who is our target audience? What we represent is a 40-something-year-old, service-oriented, gloriously flawed, (upper case “T”) Truth-seeking, (lower case “l”) liberal couple (of only children, mind you) dealing with all manner of life and trying to figure it out.  We’re real people, and we love each other.  Also, I think we’re individually smart, fun, funny, kind, inclusive, ethical, anxious (…so fucking anxious…), flawed people.  But together, we’re compelling.  We are.  To someone.  You’re here, so that proves it. But ultimately I love my wife and she loves me, and we both have extensive histories and experiences which brought us together and provided us with curses and blessings.  (My favorite Indigo Girls lyric, “A curse and a blessing are one and the same.”  Indeed.) Anyway, this is the first of three parts.  Our “First Annual Natrona Heights Drunkin Punkin Festival.”  Here you have two sober people.  Next week, you’ll have us buzzed.  And in two weeks…I have no idea but I can’t wait to hear it along with you.  (I listen to these just a day before I release them, so I’m kind of on the ride with you.  In the front seat, of course, but still with you.) The music?  Vince Guaraldi’s, “Great Pumpkin Waltz” and James Taylor’s, “You’ve Got a Friend.”  You do.  Really. Marta Hatter is a psychotherapist who specializes in working with individuals experiencing depression, trauma, anxiety, PTSD and relationship issues. In addition, Marta also provides online counseling for cross-cultural workers, humanitarian aid workers, and missionaries from California who are living and working abroad.   How do you deal with the sense of obligation during the holidays? Take a look at your own boundaries.  Not the ones that you place on other people, rather the ones that you place on yourself.  What you will or will not say or do and what environment you choose to be in.   At a holiday get-together, how do you deal with “Whiskey Jim” who drinks too much or “Opinionated Aunt Zelda?”  Think through how this interaction is going to go, well ahead of time.  Decide in advance what your deal breaker is with someone’s behavior, if your boundaries are crossed.  Decide at what point you are politely going to leave.  Don’t try to decide this in real time as the situation is taking place.  Plan well in advance.   Point # 6 of Marta’s “Top 10 Tips for Everlasting Relationships:”  (Go to Marta’s web-site for all 10…  link below) “When your button is pushed, ask them to clarify their intention.” Think about it this way: H.I.T.   H=something Happens.   I=Interpretation.    T=Truth. Something happens, you interpret it, and then that interpretation becomes your truth. All of which takes just a second.  So instead of having this become a pattern… transform the  “I” from Interpretation to Information.  Try to seek the information rather than interpreting what we think is going on and reacting from that place.   Best advice: Seek out people and experiences that are life giving to you.  Whether that’s who you read or who you listen to.  When you have people that are life giving to you, you can then give back to so many others.   What you believe to be to true: Every breath is a gift don’t wait.  Don’t wait to apologize, to be a game changer in business, or in anything… don’t wait.   How to find and connect with Marta Hatter: http://revelationcounseling.com (http://revelationcounseling.com)– Marta’s web-site.   Thanks for Listening!
