We start tonight's show off with race results and some commentary about Crazy Mountain 100, Burning River 100, Minnesota Voyager 50, Standhope 100, Never Summer 100K, Resurrection Pass 100, and Tushars Mountain Runs. We talk about Harvey Lewis's Badwater double, well, not a true double according to Marshall Ulrich but we still think it's pretty badass. Mike Wardian and Tara Dower are both doing the AT in August for charity. Tara is going for the FKT but we are not sure yet what direction she will be going. Mike is going North to South but planning on 50 days. We discuss the co-ed FKT summiting all 58 of Colorado's 14,000 peaks (14ers). There is a funny video on reddit of a random flock of sheep following a runner. We end with some of Snoop Dog's commentary on Badminton from the Olympics. Originally aired July 15, 2015As if climbing a typical 14,000 ft mountain isn't enough of an accomplishment, Junaid and his buddy, successfully summited every one of the 58 Colorado 14ers in a single continuous hike. The journey was about 1,300 miles with a total elevation gain close to 300,000 feet. They hiked desolate Forest Service roads, class 5 traverses, many sections of the Colorado and Continental Divide Trail, as well as cross-country travel. He's done it again! After 5 YEARS of planning, Andrew climbed the hundred highest summits in Colorado in a huge non-stop effort of 22 days. And established two new Routes and FKTs within that effort along the way. And he claims he's not that fit ... "I don't know what it is about me; I can just suffer and keep going." No argument there! He tells great stories of being alone at night in the high mountains, and also discuss the history of the Colorado 14ers, from "Rick and Ricky" to "Cavedog". This is a wonderful, lively, edifying conversation you will enjoy. "Someone analyzed all these attempts - Rick and Ricky were 1 full day faster than me running, but I was 4 days faster than them on the logistics! Cavedog and I were the same, so I beat his time only by taking a more efficient line (a longer and bolder linkup) in the Elks." "Cavedog redefined the game, and we all follow that. He realized it wasn't about speed (note: Rick Trujillo won the Pikes Peak Marathon 6 times and the HR100 once!) - the defining factor became efficiency during the entire effort." What about technical proficiency? Rick and Ricky were great runners, but not mountaineers. "It's a style thing. You have to do the Blanca - Little Bear Traverse. These are the things that excite me." Listen and find out the two new routes Andrew considers to be on par with the famous Nolan's 14, the Weminuche Wipeout and the Centennial Elks Traverse ("Sorry, I couldn't think of a cool name for that one"). And his closing advise? "The battle plan never lasts longer than the first contact with the enemy." His Trip Report is a very thorough and thoughtful read. This is the summit-to-summit thread on 14ers.com, with over 400 Comments. "Great story, great writing. I still cannot wrap my head around how this is even possible." - susanjoypaul
This week I'm very excited to sit down and chat with a great neighbor, friend, and fellow lover of the mountains of Colorado Mike Mikucki!! Mike's quest to climb all the Colorado 14ers (Mountains over 14,000 feet) started when he was very young. Over his teenage years his dad and him began hiking these mountains during the summer until eventually they found themselves finishing every single one of the 58 or 53 or 54 (depending on how you qualify what makes a 14er). This is the first of hopefully a few episodes where Mike shares his adventures climbing these mountains! It has it all- literal cliffhangers, lightning storms, altitude sickness, and two dads dreaming of the day they will hike these with their kids!! Enjoy!! I've properly walked you all through the introduction to Tear Out the Tags and the importance of removing the labels that are holding you back. However, I've missed a crucial part of the puzzle. You see, Tear Out the Tags is the journey. We must move with intention on a path forward while tearing out the labels that feel itchy, scratchy and uncomfortable to wear. However, the destination is to live emboldened so we can embolden others. Embolden means to give someone the courage and confidence to be something or show up in a certain way. In order to remove the labels that are blocking you, you need to wear both courage and confidence in order to overcome the obstacles and pursue your dreams. We also learn how Alex got into the 14ers and what inspired him to create the blog.
In this episode, we talk with Renee Jacobs, the FKT holder for California's 14ers. On top of being a mom of a two year old at the time, Renee decided to embark on this grand adventure of running/climbing the 15 mountains in California that are over 14,000 feet tall. The previous record was somewhere around 9 days and 12 hours, she did it in 6 days, 4 hours and 5 minutes. We picked her brain on how she prepared mentally and physically for this massive undertaking, why it was so important to her to do this FKT attempt solo and without a man, how she protects her headspace on an adventure such as this to stay confident and in control while scaling mountains, and so much more. Make two daily entries based on two questions: 1. What did I receive today for which I’m grateful? 2. Whose day was better because of me? BENEDICTION: We ask you, Master, be our helper and defender. Rescue those of our number in distress; raise up the fallen ; assist the needy; heal the sick; turn back those of your people who stray; feed the hungry; release our captives; revive the weak; encourage those who lose heart. Let all the nations realize that you are the only God, that Jesus Christ is your Child, and that we are your people and the sheep of your pasture. Amen.

This week is all about long distance mountain biking as we chat with Scott Morris. Scott and his girlfriend Eszter Horanyi live nomadically on public lands and spend their days working remotely and exploring beautiful areas on their mountain bikes. Growing up in Utah he fell in love with mountain biking. As his rides got longer and longer and he overcame the "limits of daylight", he began "bikepacking". What in the world is bikepacking (besides a word that keeps trying to autocorrect....)??? Simple- It's backpacking with a mountain bike.....or mountain biking with a backpack. Essentially, you ride your mountain bike all day and then at night you throw out a sleeping bag and set up camp. The next morning, you set back out down the trail on your bike. Scott's bikepacked the Continental Divide Trail (the parts he was allowed to), explored the "bikeable 14ers", and started the first single track bikepacking event on the Arizona Trail, a journey from Mexico to Utah with a brief jaunt down and up some little geologic feature called the Grand Canyon. In this episode we explore a bunch of different topics. How did he get into this fringe sport, how did the AZT bikepacking race evolve, what life is like living nomadically from his camper van, how his GPS tracking software works (mentioned in episode #37 with Candice Burt), why public lands are so dang important, and which 14ers you can actually mountain bike up. Oh yeah....we also have the same uncle but aren't related. How this math equation works is beyond my tiny brain..... (My Uncle Joel Bown's episode: https://soundcloud.com/chris-ward-126531464/16-joel-bown-1971-endless) Enjoy guys! If one person out there listens to this episode and tries bikepacking I will count it as a victory!! The mountain conquerer has returned!! A few months removed from finishing his 14ers Project where he summited the 100 tallest mountains in the contiguous United States, Calvin Johannsen returns to the podcast for an overdue celebration of this lofty accomplishment. In this episode we crack open some beers, open some presents, and have a great time as Calvin shares more adventures from the road, including one so intense that it actually gave me a nightmare...as embarrassing as that is to admit as a grown man. Enjoy the conversation as he recounts the highs and lows of solo travel, waxes poetically about how awesome it is to sleep in the back of a Prius, explains how he dealt with the post-adventure slump, and, of course, reveals about the trials and tribulations of climbing some of the most rugged mountains in the U.S. over 100 straight days. Calvin is the master of the "Calspiration", straightforward advice intended to push you towards being the best possible human possible, so I'm releasing this episode specifically on New Years Day for all of you guys looking to start 2017 off on the right foot. Instead of simply making a New Year's Resolution (and abruptly breaking it a few days later), I'm urging you to check out Calvin's "Join 100 Club" which highlights the power of consistency in achieving your goals. Signing up is free and by completing 100 days of your own specific habit, I promise you will see considerable amount of progress! Personally, I'm doing 100 days of a minimum of 15 minutes of yoga to improve my flexibility and mobility (and hold myself accountable). Whatever you decide to do with your year remember this, YOU have control over your decisions and those decisions will lead you down whatever path you choose. This could be the path of new experiences, adventure, discipline, progress and experiencing the most out of life or it could be the path of stagnation and "same old, same old". I know what I'm striving for!
Oh man, SUPER excited about today's return guest, Joe Grant. He recently summited EVERY 14,000 or higher peak in Colorado in record time. Let's find out how he did it!
The paralympics rolls on, Mo takes out the Great North Run, Berlin announce a super-speedy start-list, there’s some breaking doping news, Tony brings us a Great North Trials, you rock your kit all around the world, stand atop the podium and Rate Your red hot Run and we interview Joe Grant about an amazing journey.
Calvin Johannsen is in the middle of an epic quest to summit the 100 tallest mountains in the continental United States in....100 DAYS. It is called the "14ers Project." No doubt about it, he is on an ADVENTURE. One most people don't have the strength to endure. He has faced adversity, self doubt, gained incredible physical strength, solidified his adventure mindset, demonstrated super human endurance as he has pushed himself beyond what he thought was possible. Follow his progress from mild-mannered dude to kickass mountain goat at calvin.johannsen on Instagram or at www.14ersproject.com. The man is the most inspirational person I know! Keep pushing forward.
Learn about one heck of a challenge in and on Colorado's 14ers. Nolan's 14 is a run over the 14 summits over 14,000 ft. in Colorado's Sawatch Range, from Mt. Massive to Mt. Shavano in either direction. You can choose your own route between summits, but the most practical routes have been estimated to be 88 to 106 miles with 44,000 ft. of climb. Cutoff is 60 hours to the last summit. I This is not a race. Nolan's has been around since the early 90's but has gained popularity with the growth of ultra running. Eric completed Nolans ins 2012 in 57:27:14 after scouting the course since 2003. This year Eric attempted the FKT on the 14ers but was thwarted by bad weather. Hear the story on the show!

This week is all about catching up with the random bits of our lives. Claire recaps the 14er she hiked for the 4th of July, Joy talks about visiting the biggest soda store ever in Oklahoma City, we talk about how neither of us remembers anything from high school except for all of the songs we listened to, and we both agree that we want to be Gwen Stefani. Don’t worry, we talk a little bit about CrossFit as well, going back and forth about our biggest CF pet peeves and whether or not Claire’s attitude about CrossFit has changed since she started coaching. Last but not least, did you know it’s been 18 years since the album Wannabe by the Spice Girls came out? It’s ok, you can feel old now.
Dan Hobbs climbed 57 Colorado peaks in 25 days to raise money for Save the Children, a charity that helps poor and afflicted children in the US and around the world. All the peaks were over 14,000 feet and 17 of them required class 3 to 5 technical climbing skills. That's 400 miles and 160,000 vertical feet of hiking and climbing using many non-traditional routes and peak-to-peak traverses. You can learn more about his challenging adventure at rundanrun.org.
