Dr. Marc Adler is a professor of chemistry at Toronto Metropolitan University. Dr. Adler earned his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from UC Berkeley, followed by a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Duke University, and completed postdoctoral work at both Yale and Oxford. He has held faculty positions in both the US and Canada, with his latest role at TMU. Laura Giudice completed a pre-apprenticeship program at Humber College before entering the trade. She is currently in her fourth year of her plumbing apprenticeship and works in the commercial service sector. Michal Malyska is a machine learning scientist and engineer. Michal received a Bachelor of Science in math and statistics from the University of Toronto. In our season three finale episode, we are joined by Sahar Kausar, a technical director at Disney Television Animation. Sahar attended the University of Florida and received a dual Bachelor of Science in computer science engineering and digital arts, as well as two art minors in studio arts and fine arts. She then completed a master's in entertainment technology at Carnegie Mellon University. After graduating, Sahar worked at Walt Disney Imagineering as a technical animator and animatronics programmer, then at Walt Disney Animation Studios as a character technical director. Some of her notable projects include Encanto, WISH, Baymax!, and Tokyo Disneyland: Enchanted Tale of Beauty & the Beast. Now, Sahar is a technical director at Disney Television Animation and is currently part of the team for Monsters at Work on Disney+. Dr. Humza Nusrat is a medical physicist, researcher, and professor. Dr. Nusrat attended Ontario Tech University, formerly known as UOIT, and received a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences. He then attained his PhD in biomedical physics at Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly known as Ryerson. Following his PhD, Dr. Nusrat completed his medical physics residency. Now, he is working as a medical physicist in one of Canada's largest cancer clinics at Sunnybrook Hospital. He also works as an assistant professor in physics and leads his own research lab building virtual reality tools for healthcare. Maggie Ma, also known as Maggie in Data, is a geospatial data scientist. Maggie attended the University of Toronto as an international student and received a bachelor's degree with a double major in statistics and human geography, as well as a minor in geographic information systems. Now, Maggie works as a data scientist on the AI research team for a startup called Quincus and she is pursuing a certification in artificial intelligence from Stanford University. Seann Seto is a pharmacist and medical science liaison. Seann attended Western University for medical science but left after his third year when he was accepted into pharmacy school. Seann received his PharmD from the University of Toronto and then completed his hospital pharmacy residency at University Health Network. After his residency, Seann worked first as a clinical pharmacist on the oncology team at Toronto General Hospital, then in the cardiology intensive care unit in Sunnybrook Hospital. Now, Seann works in the pharmaceutical industry as a medical science liaison at Eisai Canada, while still practicing as a clinical pharmacist on the side. Dr. Imogen Coe is a biology professor at Toronto Metropolitan University and the founding dean of the Faculty of Science at TMU. Dr. Coe received a Bachelor of Science with a major in biology from the University of Exeter in England. She then went on to receive her master's and PhD in biology from the University of Victoria in Vancouver, Canada. Following her PhD, Dr. Coe completed two post-doctoral fellowships before becoming a professor at York University in Toronto. During her time at York, Dr. Coe acted as chair and associate dean. Following these roles, she became the founding dean of the Faculty of Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. Now, Dr. Coe works as a biology professor at TMU and is an advocate for more inclusive science. In this conversation, Dr. Coe discusses her path to become a biology professor and researcher, as well as what is involved in becoming dean and gaining larger leadership roles. Alessandro Profenna is a gameplay programmer, currently working at Digital Extremes. Alessandro achieved a Bachelor of Science with a major in computer science and a minor in mathematics from Toronto Metropolitan University (previously Ryerson University). He then received a game development, advanced programming graduate certificate from Sheridan College. During his education, Alessandro completed several internships from Environment Canada, to IBM, and Activision. Chloe Brown is a policy analyst who is currently in the running for Toronto mayor. Chloe has dedicated her career to working in policy and serving the community. Makena Arntsen is a social worker, psychotherapist, and podcast host. Dr. Helen Tran is a professor at the University of Toronto in the department of chemistry, cross-appointed in chemical engineering. Helen received a Bachelor of Science with a major in chemistry and a minor in chemical engineering from UC Berkeley in California. Upon graduating, Helen worked as a scientific engineering assistant at the Molecular Foundry, before embarking on her PhD in chemistry at Columbia University in New York. Stephanie Loureiro is the Chief Strategy Officer of Speer Technologies. Jelena Madzarevic is a building and material sciences specialist at EllisDon, a very well-known global construction company. Jelena earned her Bachelor of Science from Toronto Metropolitan University with a chemistry major and a physics minor. She then went on to earn a Master of Building Science, also from TMU. In her current position, Jelena conducts design reviews and risk advisements, amongst many other responsibilities in the construction services division. Lauren Phillips is the Chief Product Officer of BioBox Analytics, a techbio startup company for biological data analysis. Lauren attended Toronto Metropolitan University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in the Biomedical Science program. With an interest in medicine and research, Lauren became interested in paediatric brain cancer research, which led her to her Master of Science degree at the University of Toronto for Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. During her master's, Lauren met the co-founders of BioBox and joined the techbio start-up with the mission to help scientists with their biological data. As CPO, Lauren is responsible for designing and testing the software features, as well as communicating with clients' needs and relaying feedback to the BioBox team. Melissa Yu is a forensic analyst at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Ontario. Melissa earned her Bachelor of Science in Archaeology with Forensic Science at the University of Exeter in England. She then received her Master of Science in Crime and Forensic Science at the University College London. Following her studies, Melissa faced a time of discouragement as she struggled to achieve the career of her dreams in forensics. In the very first episode of MENT TO BE, we are joined by the CEO and founder of The Math Guru, Vanessa Vakharia. Vanessa received a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing Management at the University of Guelph and a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education at the University of British Columbia. In 2007, Vanessa founded The Math Guru, a tutoring space in Toronto. Since then, Vanessa has expanded her brand as a published author and global speaker. In addition to math education, Vanessa has pursued her passion for music as a musician in the band Goodnight Sunrise, who have opened for Bon Jovi. In this conversation, Vanessa tells us about her journey from failing math twice to opening a very successful tutoring business and becoming The Math Guru.
