An action packed episode taking a look at the SNP/Scottish Government developments and the SNP leadership reporting. At the end of the show a listener question from Ian Currie. Recommendations: Stuart: Fragile Animals - book - Genevieve Jagger When an ex-catholic woman develops a sexual relationship with a vampire, she is forced to confront the memories that haunt her religious past. Struggling to deal with the familial trauma of her Catholic upbringing, hotel cleaner, Noelle, travels to the Isle of Bute. There, she meets a man who claims to be a vampire, and a relationship blooms between them based solely on confession. But as talk turns sacrilegious, and the weather outside grows colder, Noelle struggles to come to terms with her blasphemous sexuality. She becomes hounded by memories of her past: her mother's affair with the local priest, and the part she played in ending it. Catriona: Night Train to Odesa - book - Jen Stout When Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, millions of lives changed in an instant. Millions of people were suddenly on the move. In this great flow of people was a reporter from Shetland. Jen Stout left Moscow abruptly, ending up on a border post in southeast Romania, from where she began to cover the human cost of Russian aggression. Her firsthand, vivid reporting as she travelled alone, hauling around body armour, brought the war to audiences back home, as she reported from front lines and cities across Ukraine. Stories from the night trains, birthday parties, military hospitals and bunkers: stories from the ground, from a writer with a deep sense of empathy, always seeking to understand the bigger picture, the big questions of identity, history, hopes and fears in this war in Europe. Eamonn: THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS - film In 1896, a construction engineer from the British Army, J.H. Patterson (Kilmer) is sent to build a railway bridge across Uganda's Tsavo River for the British East African Railway. Soon after he arrives, workmen begin to disappear at night from their tents never to be seen alive again.
In this huge political week it was great to get Iain back on the show to talk about the upcoming local and mayoral elections & also reflect on the HUMbelievable downfall of Humza. We also speculate on what form a Penny Mordaunt leadership bid would take, and conclude it would involve a cape and a sword. Humza Yousaf has been First Minister and leader of the SNP for a year. We look back at the past 12 months and ask no matter how effective he has been in steering Scotland through crises which have seen massive strike action in England why do so many folk seem dismissive of his tenure. We also question the timidity of the Scottish Government in challenging the limitations of the devolved settlement and wonder if being a good conciliator is enough for a party leader going into a General Election.Lesley suggests that getting on the front foot over economic issues such as bailing out the privatised English water companies should be a political priority for Humza.Eylon Musk, and JK Rowling have been vocal and vehement critics of the new Scottish Hate Crime Act. Rishi Sunak has weighed in with support for Rowling despite similar hate legislation in England. How far does this politicking undermine the justified criticisms of aspects of the act by someone like Joanna Cherry? We enter these choppy waters and try our best to navigate them.Humza and the SNP have been outspoken opponents of the actions of the Israeli Government and the IDF in Gaza since the outbreak of the conflict. As evidence that UK Government lawyers have advised that Israel has breached international humanitarian law how long can the government continue to allow arms sales to continue? All this plus daffodils, weird Fife airfield dreams, and Ally McCoist says stuff out loud, in this week's episode. ★ Support this podcast ★

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf became interested in politics when he was just 16, believing it was the best way to make meaningful change. He joined the SNP whilst studying politics at the University of Glasgow and by 26, had become one of the youngest MSPs to enter Holyrood. Humza has gone to make history as the first Muslim leader of any Western democracy, as well as Scotland's youngest leader. He joins James to discuss the state of UK politics, Scottish independence and why he believes Islamophobic conspiracy theories have become part of the mainstream discourse. At his first speech as SNP leader at the party's conference, Humza Yousaf gave a policy-filled address. He hasn't had an easy start to his leadership, but can he turn things around? Katy Balls talks to Lucy Dunn and Iain Macwhirter. Produced by Oscar Edmondson and Cindy Yu.
Humza Yousaf's closing speech to the SNP annual conference in Aberdeen is the focus of this week's episode. He began as do we with his response to the developing humanitarian disaster in Gaza and the atrocities carried out by Hamas. We compare and contrast his measured and humane approach to that of Sir Keir Starmer before going on to give our initial impressions of the speech itself and the measures he announced within it.Tommy Shephard, one of the key movers behind the new SNP independence strategy took time out of the conference to explain it to us.Along the way we also examine the SNP in crisis narrative and the defection of Dr Lisa Cameron to the Tories. If you missed Humza's speech, follow this linkhttps://youtube.com/watch?v=HdzfYX1NQ2EHe comes on around 4.52 ★ Support this podcast ★

And what happened at the Holyrood Magazine awards?

It's been an incredible start to Humza Yousaf's time as First Minister and he reflects on the unique situation he's had to deal with in this candid and light-hearted interview. From the news of Nicola Sturgeon's arrest, to his first awkward chat with Rishi Sunak, he shares the privileges and pressures of being First Minister. Humza talks openly about his mental health, but also his physical health where he's enlisted the help of Joe Wicks to shed his 'dad bod'. It's a real mix, with deep conversations about race, class and toxic masculinity, alongside a very honest assessment of his own footballing ability and love of Celtic. Warning: includes a wasp. James Heale speaks to John Ferry and Iain Macwhirter about Humza Yousaf's first 100 days in Holyrood. Plagued by Sturgeon's arrest, does the Scottish First Minister's future look bright?
If a week is a long time in politics, what's a fortnight?Yup, it's definitely a catch-up episode after the hiatus for the Joyce flit. After a labyrinthine link from the Lord's test match to the SNP Independence Convention in Dundee we get down to analysing Humza's speech and strategy of "A vote for the SNP is a vote for independence", at the next General Election. On a day when Orkney Council debated its future with the UK and Scotland we try and look behind the media feeding frenzy at the underlying issues of too much power being vested not only in Westminster and Holyrood but also in massive "local" authorities. This American Independence Day also sees the “thanksgiving” ceremony at St Giles' Cathedral where King Charles will be presented with the Honours of Scotland. Is it a piece of pointless vanity and should Humza attend? The Climate Change Committee has issued a report condemning the UK government's lack of action on implementing its policies on meeting Net Zero and missing key opportunities to reap the benefits of a Green Industrial Revolution. Is Sunak, and indeed Starmer, too focused on fiscal targets to see the big picture? And it's your last chance to buy Thrive for two weeks while Lesley is off cycling in the mists of Lochaber. Following Nicola Sturgeon's evidence session at the Covid inquiry in London, the New Statesman's Scotland editor, Chris Deerin, joins Anoosh Chakelian and Rachel Wearmouth to discuss what she had to say. They chat about how much the prospect of a no-deal Brexit affected pandemic planning in Scotland, what the relationship between Holyrood and Westminster was like at the time, and how the former first minister tried to land political blows on the UK government during her testimony. Then, the team turn to Sturgeon's replacement as head of the Scottish government, Humza Yousaf, and his plan to use the next UK general election as a mandate to insist on a new Scottish independence referendum. It's been less than 2 months since Humza Yousaf became Scotland's first minister. So far his premiership has been overshadowed by an investigation into the party's finances: the SNP's former Chief Executive and Treasurer were arrested and then released without charge, pending further investigation. The party denies any wrongdoing. Today's Mishal Husain spoke to the first minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf about what it was like taking over the party during such a period of turmoil, and what effect the situation has had on his hopes for independence. The arrest of the SNP's treasurer Colin Beattie in relation to the probe into the party's finances has overshadowed Humza Yousaf's relaunch speech scheduled for today. Beattie has been taken into custody two weeks after Peter Murrell, the SNP's chief executive, was questioned by police regarding loans made in June 2021. Can Yousaf distance himself from the chaos in his own party? What does this mean for Scottish Labour's chances at the next election? Michael Simmons speaks to Katy Balls and Stephen Daisley. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.
