This episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast takes on a more conversational tone as host Ken Rayner, IHSA's VP of Market Development and Communications, and Jennifer Kahn, EllisDon's VP of Inclusive Diversity, discuss diversity and inclusion. Jennifer shares her personal experiences with diversity and inclusion, stating that diversity is a fact but inclusion is a choice that requires intention and effort. Jennifer also explores the concept of privilege, a controversial term, and its potential to promote diversity and inclusion in its own way. Everyone has threads of privilege, both good and bad; however, it is important to acknowledge and understand where one holds privilege and how to share it with others. Ken discusses the role curiosity plays in fostering openness and embracing diversity in others' backgrounds. If we focus only on the first few layers when getting to know someone, we fail to fully understand their perspectives and experiences. Approaching diversity with a curious mindset can lead to a better understanding and appreciation for it.Jennifer discusses her role in diversity, equity, and inclusion at EllisDon, which involves finding the right balance for underrepresented individuals. She also raises key points for workplaces when it comes to diversity, such as creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their perspectives, and stressing the importance of supporting other diversity factors that may be invisible, such as neurodiversity and disabilities. For this issue of “Knowledge Counts”, we are speaking with three CIQS members who share the path they took to join CIQS and earn their designations. • Host: Wendy Hobbs, PQS(F) • Producer: Ryan Schriml • Guests: Mykola Pulnyev, Kelly Parker, Michael Gabert About Our Guests: Mykola Pulnyev, PQS, MRICS, PMP, GSC was born in Ukraine, where he lived until he moved to Toronto with his family in 2002 in pursuit of new opportunities. He started off working in construction with a Ukrainian plumber while taking English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at night. In 2004, he was accepted into the Construction Engineering Technology program at George Brown, where he took a construction cost estimation class. His instructor inspired him to join CIQS as a student member and he earned his PQS in 2014. “I have always wanted to be associated with landmarks that will remain on the Canadian landscape for generations.” At the time of this interview, he was the preconstruction manager at EllisDon in Ottawa. Currently, he is the commercial director for EllisDon in Chicoutimi, QC. Kelly Parker, PQS has over 25 years of experience working as a contractor's mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) quantity surveyor in the UK before relocating to Canada and joining Tech-Cost in 2015 as an M&E cost consultant. As a “poacher turned gamekeeper”, she understands how services are installed on-site, which is key when preparing estimates and reviewing change. Growing up, she saw herself as working in a bank or possibly being a brick layer. When her father told her that quantity surveying was a good profession, she “decided to count the bricks instead of laying them.” She volunteers as a CIQS Ambassador and sits on the CIQS education committee, and she is excited about promoting the Institute and quantity surveying as a strong career choice. “As quantity surveyors, the world is our oyster and we are limited only by our own beliefs.” Michael Gabert, PQS(F), MRICS, GSC is the director for BTY's Prairie's region, specializing in Lender's Technical Advisory, Independent Certification, Payment Certification and Cost Management services for public authorities, owners, developers, architects and financial institutions. His experience encompasses independent costing, compliance review, preparation, and certification of substantial and total completion on major projects. He has worked in a wide variety of project sectors, including airports, health care centers, waste-water treatment plans, highway and bridge projects. “There is so much to learn in this profession. You go to work every day knowing that you will learn something new.”

In this podcast I talk with Geoff Smith, CEO and President of EllisDon. Geoff is the President & Chief Executive Officer of EllisDon, an employee-owned, $5 billion-a-year construction services and technology company. In the world of Climate Change mitigation, Geoff Smith is probably best known for his leadership of the Carbon Impact Initiative – A Building Industry-Led Action Plan in Support of Canada's International Climate Change Commitments. In our conversation, Geoff and I talk about how climate change and carbon emissions came to be such an important concern for Geoff, and what EllisDon is trying to do about it; what the construction industry can do to make a difference in moving the needle on carbon emissions; the big efforts EllisDon is making to tackle the opportunities and challenges associated with Mass Timber given its potential to significantly reduce embodied carbon and lock up carbon; and what will be required to actually meet our commitments to the Paris agreement and reduce carbon emissions before it is too late. We also talk about losing hope and what we need to do about it. I have known and worked with Geoff for many years and have come to admire him as both one of the Construction Industry's most respected leaders, but also as a great guy. He is one of those rare people, who is successful, intelligent, and incredibly competent, while also having a real sense of humility, and a wonderful sense of humour. Black Canadians have been part of our construction industry for as long as there's been one, including many Black-owned contracting businesses. Now, a new organization known as the Afro-Canadian Contractors Association has come along to raise awareness of the good work they do, promote their inclusion and fair treatment and to help its members take advantage of the opportunities out there in our industry. Some grotesque incidents at Ontario jobsites last year attracted revulsion across the country, promoting construction leaders as high up as Geoff Smith at EllisDon to call for a focus on eliminating racism in Canadian construction. So it seemed like a good time to invite the president of the ACCA, Sephton Spence, to join Fenestration Conversations to tell us all about the new association and the proud history of Black construction work in Canada.

In this week's episode of TCR Express, Journal of Commerce staff writer Russell Hixson looks at an innovative Alberta residential energy project as well as a look at the recent BC Speech from the Throne. We also have updates from Daily Commercial News staff writers Don Wall and Angela Gismondi about recent stories they're working on ranging from Ontario's vaccination protocols to digital transformation in the province's construction industry. Amongst the projects covered in the throne speech were the George Massey Tunnel, an aging piece of Vancouver infrastructure that has gone through several previous permutations as provincial governments tried to modernize or replace the structure. Russell's also working on a story about a Southern Alberta Institute of Technology project involving a dwelling that produces more energy than it consumes all while meeting the Living Building Challenge to create a truly sustainable and non-toxic structure. Don's vaccine protocol story looks at how Ontario's Building Trades council is examining the various unions setting up their own clinics and they are wondering whether these would fit into the new provincial rules. He also recently wrote about trenchless technology and how it can replace open-cut excavation. Angela is covering subjects as varied as EllisDon's seventieth anniversary, an Ontario General Contractors Association last week. It focused on digital transformation and she's working on a story about two recent university grads who have launched an innovative new tool for the beneficial reuse of excess soil. Taking Chances: Innovation and Success at EllisDon
This week The Construction Record podcast brings together Journal of Commerce digital media editor Warren Frey and staff writer Russell Hixson and Daily Commercial News staff writers Angela Gismondi and Don Wall to discuss Buildings Week, the virtual conference that brings together The Buildings Show and Buildex Alberta into a virtual conference spanning construction, architecture, development and the wide-ranging issues facing the industry such as the pandemic, changing financial issues and the rise of digitization. The group covered sessions ranging from how the concrete industry has dealt with the COVID-19 crisis, modernization and the evolving state of procurement, and the need for systemic change in the industry as it wrestles with racist incidents which emerged in the last year, as well as talking about the future of conferences once the pandemic has passed. Angela also covered EllisDon president Geoff Smith's keynote where he addressed these issues and other matters affecting the industry along with the opportunities that come with uncertainty. We've included segments of his presentation in the podcast. Be sure to tune in next week as we celebrate the 100th episode of The Construction Record!

This week on The Construction Record podcast, Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce national managing editor Vince Versace and Journal of Commerce digital media editor Warren Frey take a look at the response across the Canadian construction industry to the protests in the United States and Canada in the wake of George Floyd's death at the hands of the Minneapolis police. Many construction associations and companies tweeted their support for the Black Lives Matter movement on Jun 2 with a “blackout tile” graphic and others such as the BC Building Trades and EllisDon released statements in support of the movement. Vince and Warren also discuss how they've seen the industry change over time, though there's still a long way to go before the industry reaches its goals regarding diversity. Vince also spoke to Sean Reid, who has spent time in both the technology and construction industries and says the two industries should be allies, not enemies. Reid recently wrote an Industry Perspectives Op-Ed in response to Jim Balsillie's recent National Post editorial imploring the Canadian government to concentrate on digital technology over infrastructure. Reid also reflects on his time with the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada and his work with the Ontario construction industry.
